New Powerbook's sound is muted in some apps

I have a new powerbook that I got about a month ago, and to my great unhappiness it's having sound problems. When I am using iTunes sound will be produced as normal, and will most other applications (Myst IV, Reason, Garageband).
However, Windows Media Player and Realplayer will not emit sound when playing streaming files, and Quicktime will not emit sound when playing .mpeg movies {even from the hard disk}. Playing the same mpeg file in VLC does work though.
I began to have this problem yesterday and fixed it by restarting, but today restarting did not work.
Please help, this is making me sad. Thanks!

Okay, so a permissions repair + restart seems to have solved the problem for now. We shall see...

If you are referring to the fact that, in the App Store app, after you have installed or updated an App, that the Install button changes to now read "Open" then this does not mean that the App is Open and running. It means, rather, that, if you touch the button now marked "Open", the App will be started and "Open". It's just a quick way to get to the App you have just installed or updated.

  • Sound not working with some apps and websites

I don't get sound on some websites or apps like vine.  Video is fine

    Try Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Some apps do not have sound in ipad2

in my ipad, I do not get sound on some of the apps. sound is working for some apps ( like pbs kids) , also for you tube.
How can I fix it ?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound. Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • My experience with Tiger/new Powerbook 15", 1.67 ghz

Apple proclaims "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The world’s most advanced operating system."
Well, that hasn't been the case in my experience.
I bought a new 15 Powerbook HR, 1.67 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, 80gb hd on 11/4/05 (from MacMall). At this point I have about 20gb free.
Problems I have noticed with it/OSX.(Most have been fixed by an archive and install done a few weeks ago.) Here's my trial by fire.
    In chronological order
    - trackpad lags
    - many icons not correct after using Migration Assistant.
    - some icons open up the wrong applications
    - window resize button on Finder, and some app windows, doesn't open window to full screen. Also doesn't open window so that scroll bars disappear.
    - dragging a file up or down a window in list view doesn't always make the window scroll up or down when I go up or down to the top or bottom edges. When they do move, it races. Smooth scrolling has no effect.
    - CDr recorded on a machine with OSX 10.3.9 shows up as a recordable CD!
    - screen dims when I disconnect power supply
-Network option from the Go menu does nothing.
    - Doing a Get Info on a html file has Internet Explorer as the app to open when the files have Mozilla icons
    - icon for some apps have wrong application logo on them
    - screen dims and brightens rapidly, disconcertingly in low light. I turn off the ambient light adjustment on the monitors control panel. This is poorly implemented. Having the keys light up is nice though.
    - can't reset F7 key to take pictures of screen. (I eventually am able to do it.)
    - the clicker gives me a sharp pain in my arm from the second day of use. This has gotten better now but I was worried I might be getting carpal tunnel/repetitive stress injury. (This happened when I got my new Powerbook Firewire too, eventually going away.) The clickers are too stiff when new.
    - I call Applecare. They don't have my registration information I gave them when I signed up on the web. We reset the Power Manger.
    - Quicktime movies have no sound. I later throw out the LAME stuff (Component and Framework) and get sound back.
    - I go to Genius at Apple Store. They tell me I am using a non-native resolution, that is why I am having screen dimming. (Wrong. It was the ambient light control.) They also say whatever software I have installed is likely to be causing most of the other problems.
    - I get Finder freeze #1
    - Preview does not animate gifs. It did with 10.3.9.
-System sounds do not work. Upon reboot they do. Flakey.
    - some finder windows are not opening up with the item count in list view.
    -desktop gets rearranged
-occasionally keyboard turns letters into numbers as if number lock is on. It isn't. The it will stop working altogether. Rebooting cures this. (Happens twice before I call AppleCare.)
    - call AppleCare. They have my old address when I bought the Powerbook! I get registered again.I cannot install GarageBand, which I threw out thinking I didn't need it, because the install DVDs that came with my machine have an error reading the software only package. They will send me a new install disk #1.
    - scrolling is not smooth, races.
    - I notice the memory door has 3 out of the 4 screws loose. I tighten them. The battery door feels a little loose too but that is unfixable.
    - keyboard doesn't respond #3
    - I call AppleCare. They have the wrong address still in their database!
-eject DVD does not work. (It works all other times.)
    - system freeze #2
    - kernal panic #1
    - Call AppleCare. My TechTool Deluxe CD will not boot. I ask for a replacement. (I can't believe they are still using TechTool Deluxe. I remember what a hassle it was trying to get a working disc with my Powerbook Firewire.
    - keyboard types wrong characters #4
-Print preview does not work. (it does all other times.)
-Preference for video capture program (BTV) is not remembered
    - audio is only heard when BTV is running (since fixed.)
    - system freeze #3
    - keyboard stops working #5
    - I call Apple Care. We zap P-ram 3X.
    - file sizes incorrect in list view. Have to open window a second time to get correct info.
    - install DVD #1 arrives. It is defective.
    - system freeze #4
    - I update to 10.4.4. I hope this will cure the problems. Nope.
    - Help doesn't work.
    - Battery firmware update process works but isn't smooth. It crashes "unexpectedly" as I check to make sure it is really done. (It kept telling me I needed to do it.)
    - Help works.
    - boot takes forever after 10.4.4 update.
    - battery firmware update wants to run again.
    - file size is wrong in finder list view windows.
    - keyboard stops working #6
    - fan stops yet processor is still VERY busy as I am calibrating battery. Charge is about 5%.
    - I quit IMovie, It then says it quit "unexpectedly". (This happens with other apps still.)
    - I have to use power key to wake it from sleep, as I calibrate battery.
    - keyboard problem #7
    - system freeze # 5
    - text editing in iDVD is very buggy. Cursor is impossible to see against background with many themes. There is no way to increase cursor size.
    - AppleCare says they have sent TechTool Deluxe CD. I haven't gotten it yet.
    - I receive install disk #1. 2 actually. I install software bundle only. It works! I also reinstall CPU help files. Help still doesn't work.
    - I archive and install. (It installs 10.4.2 so I update to 10.4.4), Help doesn't work.
    - Help works without my having done anything. OK.
    - I repair a gazillion permissions. (funny how when you install the system software the permissions then need to be repaired. You would think the system would know to set the permissions correctly upon installation.
    - I notice the order of the right hand menu items has changed (clock, keyboard setup, OS 9 icon...)
    - file sizes wrong in list view
    - BTV has audio loop at times. (See thread on Topic "New Powerbook Audio Stutter / Looping / Echo problem in Using your PowerBook G4 15-inch Aluminum forum.)
    - keyboard problem #8
    - keyboard problem #9
    - I call AppleCare. TechTool Deluxe CD has still not arrived. We discuss other problems. I get hung up on.
    -keyboard problem #10
    - I go to Apple Store. Talk to the genius. He tells me the system software is "a house of cards", adding other software can cause unpredictable results. He zaps P-ram 3x, does something in open firmware. Recommends a clean install. I think about it and later decide not to.
    - I lose system sounds after I install USBVison video capture driver for Tiger. I eventually get it back.
    - I repair LOTS of permissions.
    - The fan starts to make bad noise.
    - system freeze $6
    - I do a Get Info on a file I making with BTV. The OS tells me it is 11GB. I stop the recording and then I check again. It says it is 1.5 gb.
-iChat won't open. It starts, according to Activity Monitor, runs for about two seconds and then disappears.
    - Network, under the Go menu, does nothing.
    - I call AppleCare.
    - I notice cursor disappears in Firefox.
    - Yahoo IM icon keeps getting moved. All the icons it is next to are spaced about the same but this one keeps getting moved.
    - I Stuff some stuff. The fan keeps running, it is still hot after I am finished. I have to reboot to get things back to normal.
    - Some icons for PING files on my desktop have changed from having Preview icons to Quicktime icons. I use Get Info to change them back from Picture Viewer (OS 9!)
    - the fan comes on with only my normal apps running (Eudora, Firefox, Yahoo IM)
Ok, that is about all up 'til now. I still haven't gotten my TechTool Deluxe CD but need to give that a few more days. I now have 8 install DVDs. (Another install #1 came yesterday, making a total of 6 #1, and 2 #2s) The address on the invoices are finally correct, most had the wrong town but the right zip code which I had corrected many times.
The problems that are still recurring are the keyboard problem, applications still sometimes crash "unexpectedly" even though I am quitting them, the file sizes are not right the first time around in finder list view windows. Most everything else was cured by the archive and install. Little weirdnesses still crop up though. I am not sure if the echo problem has been fixed. (Mac OS) Help is still slow to appear.
Thanks for bearing with me. I do hope things get smoother in the future. I have been using Macs for about 10 years now, starting with a used SE and 7.something, going to a refurbished LC 580 and 7.5.5, a new Powerbook Firewire and 9.2.2. I have also used 10.3.9 which seemed to be a lot more stable than 10.4.
    Cheers,
    John L

If it was me I would backup to DVD/ External HD if you have and erase / reinstall OSX.
Update all and once you are finished without the user folder / any of your files on torture the Pbook to see if this happens again.
This likely will be able to give you an idea about hardware or software problems.
If all is well , likely not then copy "COPY" over from the backup you "ONLY COPY" documents, music, Photo's, desktop stuff and also place programs back in Applications folder.
The reason for the above is that in the /user/"you"/library folder it stores the settings for Icon's, prefferences to programs and some other useless stuff + E-mails for either Mac Mail and or Microrubish Entorture "entourage" depending on what you have or used also Itunes prefs.
Once this is copied leave the "/user/you/library" stuff alone and see how it runs.
App's/programs will ask to have it's preferences set again as if /when you have installed it for the first time.
Likely most of the issues if software was in the/becuase of the settings in "/user/you/library".
If this solves a lot of problems the go with care and copy the "E-MAIL +/OR ENTORUTE/ENTOURAGE + ITUNES" to the same place as where they came from but obviously in /user/you/library/ subfolders etc. same subfolders.
For Entorture search for a file called "database" as this holds all the e-mail for entourage and by copying it, when you next open Entorture it will pick-up all emails + adresses etc like it was never moved also in the same spot as it was in the new instalation / subfolders etc..
If all this fails and you as close to what I reccomended here, there is then still some issues then likely it is hardware related.
How do I know this : Had for 5 times in 365 days had my Pbook in for repair so I have had to about 120+ times had to reinstall OSX 10.3.9 and/or Tiger.
I hope this helps as for hardware I am buying Alienware or Extreme as they can upgrade the cpuvideobasically all else except the motherboard " amd opteron 64 dualcore + Nvidia fx quadro 1400 + 1 or 2 hd's + 1/2 dvd's etc. etc. $2500"

  • No sound or volume control in some apps

    Hi,
Recently (last fews days) I have noticed that sound is not working in some apps. Also the volume up/down buttons do not seem to work in these apps either - the onscreen volume level widget does not appear.
The issue is usually video related content such as the sky news app.
Not an issue system wide as the native video app works. so does air video.
I have restarted the ipad. also tried updating to latest firmware yesterday but issue persists.
    any assistance appreciated.

  • Some apps won't play sound through iPad2 speakers

I've noticed since updating to iOS 5 and 5.0.1, I've got more apps that won't play sound through ipad2 speakers, but will play sound through earphones though.  Using the same app on the iphone plays sound through the iphone speakers as normal.
It seems to be picky with which apps it does this to as Sky News/BBCiplayer/YouTube/Video/ IMDb all play sound through ipad speakers. Apps like FilmOn plus/ FreeAppMagic/ Falling Gems/ Bejeweled2/ FNS Shift2 will only play sound through earphones.  These Apps updating to the new iOS doesn't fix the sound issue either.
I can use an app that plays sound through iPad speakers, then use an app that doesn't play sound through the speakers, then use another app that does play sound through speakers, so the earphone connection actuator doesn't look like the problem to me.  Maybe some sound drivers may have been lost or deleted with new iOS updates over wifi...?
    Any help would be appreciated.

See if perhaps this is the reason why some apps aren't playing sound.
If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Need to Backup all App's and Files to move to a newer powerbook g4

Apple wants me to send in my p.book mostly due to hot spots on the screen. They said they will have to wipe it clean and may wind up just sending me a new p.book. I don't know if they will just send a refurbished p.book that is the exact same model and version as the obe I have (which is 2.25 years old-purchased Oct. 2003), or if they will send me one of the newer p.books with newer hardware and configuraations such as a different graphics card. (If anyone has any idea on this, please let me know). Anyways, I am a designer and have alot of time-consuming files on my mac. As you may assume, I am quite worried about the idea of wiping my computer clean and relying on a Backup to preserve everything. I don't know much about backup/restore softwre, but I was hoping to do what I have heard referred to as a "Mirror Image" type of backup to my WD 120GB external drive. I want to make this process as easy as possible, and am looking for reccomendations of software that will "clone" my current p.book so that I can simply restore to my new p.book and all my app's will be up and running and executable immediately from the restore without having to re-install all app's. I basically want my new p.book to be exactly the same as my soon to be older one (with all the same settings and configurations that took so long to set up over the years). I have heard of Carbon Copy Cloner and Norton's Ghost. How do Mac users genrally go about this when switching to a new system? I have been using Retrospect Express which comes with Western Digital drives, but one tech at WD told me it is not meant to restore to a different/newer system b/c of things like the graphics card, and other 2.25 year newer hardware that will require different drivers. I am worried that if I restore from the wrong software, many of my devices will not be functional due to different drivers/configurations that were not part of the restore I did. I am pretty sure that this will happen if I use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of my hard drive on my external, and then drag it over to my new p.book b/c this seems like it will erase the new p.book's hard drive including the OS 1st, and then simply darg the disk image onto it (which will include my old OS). Although both OS's I am speaking of will be 10.4 Tiger, the older b.up of Tiger will be configured with drivers for the hardware configurations on th elder p.book, and the newer Tiger on the new p.book (with the appropriate drivers and configurations for the new p.book) will be erases and replaced with innappropriately configured Tiger. Does this make any sense? Or is it actually much simpler than this? As you can see, I have never switched systems b4, and just want to make sure I backup using the right software. Any suggestions?
PS-Since I am missing some of my app. cd's, with Macintosh, are u able to just drag the app. folders and drop them on your new Mac and they are fully executable? In other words, are all Mac compatible programs self contained within their app. folder, and they can be simply dragged and dropped without having to be installed? Or is it that some apps can, and other mac apps have to be installed/restored from b.up software?
Sorry for the long nature of this situation : (

Answer to this: it doesn't work. I tried it; my hard drive started having issues and I did "backups" in this way by dragging and dropping the applications to DVDs. By the time I bought an external HD a couple of days later, I couldn't use my laptop at all anymore, and after replacing the laptop's HD I tried to use the DVDs with copies of the applications. And they did NOT work. Ultimately I only lost a few things--.Mac's Freefall is the only thing that comes to mind right now--but reinstalling all the applications from original disks or from downloads (and tracking down the purchase receipts!) was very time-consuming. Fortunately the folks at the store just shrugged and put iLife back on the system for me, since I had no idea how to extract it off the disks that came with the computer.
I think dragging and dropping did work with A FEW things, but only with basic stuff like Widgets.
Hopefully if/ when disaster strikes again, the cloned drive I now have will make everything much easier. I'm using SuperDuper and it seems to work well enough.
Oh, and I had all my photos/ music/ pictures/ documents/ calendars/ address books/ keychains/ mail backed up in a variety of ways: simply burnt to disk, or burnt to disk using .Mac's backup, or on iDisk. I got all that stuff back without difficulty. The applications were the hassle and so far as I can tell, the applications are what make cloning essential.

  • My sound only works through the ear phones with some apps....

With some apps (Games and books) I can only get sound on my IPAD 2 though the earphones...this just recently occured. With movies the sound goes through the speakers just fine.  Is there some adjustment I can make so I can hear the games without using the ear phones?

Make sure that you haven't got notifications muted (which will affect most games, but not iPod or Videos apps, nor earphones). Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to, notifications can either be muted by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar (the function that the switch isn't performing is on the task bar instead) : double-click the home button to bring up the task bar, slide the bar to the right, and it's the icon far left. • Sound keeps muted, iTunes doesn't play songs

Sinds a week or two sometimes when I boot my mac my sound doesn't work. My sound keeps muted and I can't turn the volume up because it's unclickable grey.
Someone told me to do the "cmd + ctrl + n + v"-trick and that sometimes helps me but the problem keeps coming back. Also iTunes doesn't want to play my songs, it keeps stuck on 0:00.
In my sound-systempreferences everything seems okay.
    My specs are:
    -  iMac mid 2012 running OSX lion 10.7.4
    -  Processor  3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    -  Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    -  Video AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

the same thing is happening to me as well since I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. My sound beeps now in everything, from email notifications, to music. But iTunes won't play any songs that I select. Hope to get some feedback.

  • Walkman sound remains muted after missed call on headset

I've noticed on my Z1C that if I receive a call while playing music through the headset, the music mutes to play the incoming call ringtone as expected. However, if I do not answer the call, the walkman continues to play the track again, but the sound is muted. I have to press pause, then play, to hear the sound again.

Thank you for the feedback. Could you state which headset your are using?

  • No sound on some apps?

I was reading that quite a few people are having problems with some apps being muted even when the volumes on.  Well i had the same problem for quite a while and it was linked to my mute switch!  i found that when It's set to lock the screen rotation some apps are automatically muted (i.e. "scene it: movies 2" and all my push notifications) I dont know why but all the apps that where installed or updated after i selected the lock rotation setting for the switch the apps where muted.  After setting it back to mute/unmute and switchign it back and forth... everything magically worked without any more problems. i hope it doesnt do it again because i would rather have it set to lock the screen then the mute.. but atleast i can share how the problem was fixed for me

  • Which model of my new X-Fi sound card? (880 vs. 886)

4Which model of my new X-Fi sound card? (880 vs. 886)O Hi,
I've bought this new X-Fi sound card yesterday.
My card is PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro Series
My wonder why the model number is SB0880? I expected it has to be SB0886. I feel very confuse because I can not define version to download driver & application for it.
    As I know:
    - SB0886: X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro, X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Champion
    - SB0880: PCI-Express X-Fi Titanium, X-Fi Titanium
I need to know which model of my sound card exactly. Some guys pls help me!
    Thank you very much.
Message Edited by M4trx on 04-07-2009 :20 PM

Both cards are exactly the same with the exception that the Fatalty Pro version having an EMI shield and 64 MB of X-RAM (which to my opinion is more of a marketing gimmick then it is of any actual use). As far as I can tell, both cards do perform exactly the same in terms of gaming and SQ. The only problem is now the price... the Fatalty Pro version has a premium price over the vanilla Titanium card! So what did you pay for it'sMessage Edited by boon2 on 04-08-2009 0:7 AM

  • Battery on New Powerbook Suddenly Dying in Minutes?

My new PowerBook has had excellent battery performance during the two months I've owned it. But suddenly today it's started dropping down to 0% power and shutting off within minutes of powering up. Last night I watched a DVD until the battery ran down (which I've done before), then let it charge overnight.
It's fine when it's plugged in to AC, but the charge drops down from 100% to 0% within minutes when running on battery. It 'recharges' up to 100% within the same amount of time.
It's also giving the warning about running on reserve power at the 97% level as it's on its way down to zero.
Any advice or similar sudden battery problems on a new PowerBook?

    Edmund,
We were both participating on some threads re: "battery problems" a couple of weeks back, and then I dropped off - because the new battery Apple sent fixed everything and I haven't had a problem since. I just thought I'd pop back in so folks know that, for me anyway, the new battery fixed everything (to this point). And that means everything, inclusing some erratic behaviour that we were afraid were due to larger issues than the battery (the connector, etc.)
So, for everyone else, if you're having problems with your battery and power supply on your new hi-res PBook (and you have one of the bad batts), call Apple and have them send you a replacement. It's quick, easy, and it solved my issues. As Edmund say, check out the other threads...FYI everyone -- and good luck,

  • TS1702 Some apps I do not have any sound?  For example Pac man and wheel of fortune:  no sound?

I am having trouble getting the sound to work on some of the apps I have installed.
Pac man and wheel of fortune are two recent ones that I have no sound.  My volume is up all the way, and the sound radio button is on in the options menu.
