New Printer Network

Hi. Where to begin...
I just bought a new Brother HL-5340d printer and set it up with my G5 running 10.5.8, no problem. My wife has a wireless pc laptop running XP, and she wants to print as well, but I can't get the network to work. She shares an internet connection with me using a Motorola SBG900 Wireless Surfboard Gateway.
I called Brother, but, of course, they say they don't provide support for networking printers.
Here's what I've tried. First, my Mac can see the laptop's shared folders on the network, but the laptop can't see anything on my Mac. I have file sharing and printer sharing turned on. I see the message, "Windows users can access your computer at smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx" but I don't know what to do with this information. I've tried typing in those numbers in various Windows wizards, but have had no luck so far.
http://lifehacker.com/247541/how-to-access-a-macs-files-on-your-pc
I've also tried to create a shared workgroup with the laptop using Apple's network preferences. I followed these instructions. I tried several times, but again no luck. I get to page four step five, but the wizard fails to find my mac.

I apologize for rambling, but I'm really stumped, dispirited, and honestly I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Thank you,
PM

Hi there.
If you have the Brother connected via USB to the G5, then you should install Bonjour for Windows on the wife's laptop. This will help with finding the printer share. Of course, you need to ensure Printer Sharing is enabled in System Preferences > Sharing and that the Brother share is enabled.
With regards to getting the laptop to see the shares on the Mac, one setting that can influence this success is the workgroup name. If you open the System Preferences > Network pane and select the Advanced tab for whatever connection the G5 is using on your network, the WINS tab will show the workgroup name set in the Mac. Usually this will be 'workgroup', which is usually what Windows will use, however the Home version of XP will have its workgroup name set as MSHOME. So, if you can change this workgroup name on either computer if they are different, then this can help with finding each other.
With regards to the connection from a PC to the Mac, you can use the Explorer application (not IE Explorer). On the laptop, open My Computer and in the Address bar (you may need to enable this by selecting View > Toolbars > Address Bar) type \\ipaddress_ofMac , for example \\192.168.0.10. If you do have SMB sharing enabled, which by your post it did sound like you did, then the Public folder and any other folder you have shared should now appear.
If connecting to the Mac from the PC now works, then Bonjour for Windows should find the shared printer.
If the above doesn't work could you confirm the IP address and subnet mask of the PC and Mac.

  • HT1178 Do I want to create a new wireless network or join my current network?  I can't connect an ethernet cable to the Mac / printer and to the wireless modem at same time - in two different rooms.

I am trying to set up Time Capsule so that I can do my first backup (after 1 1/2 years!) with Time Machine.  I have read other forums, but in each case they instructions eventually do not apply.
I have connected my TC to my existing wireless router.  This sits in a bedroom and cannot be moved as a rental home.
I have plugged in the TC and updated the software.
Now - do I want to A Create a New Wireless Network (remember I can't connect the TC to Mac using an Ethernet cable). B Replace an existing base station or wireless router with TC (only intend to use for TM as don't know other benefits as of yet). or C want TC to join current network.
Thinking C.  If I choose C, it then asks A TC to wireless join current network (NO as already connected using Ethernet). B want to connect TC to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network. C want to disable the wireless network on this TC and connect it to my computer or network using Ethernet - CANNOT do this as devices can not be in the same room.
Or do I want to create new wireless network - first set of questions - choice A?  What is the benefit to creating a new one when I won't be in this rental house for longer than 18 more months??
    Please help and quickly!  Thanks!

    Let me suggest some things.
But first ask exactly what wireless router you have now and what type of broadband service?
Are you happy with the wireless on the current router? If so, then you can plug the TC straight into whatever computer you have by ethernet, short 1M cord with no connection to the network. And use it without affecting your existing network at all. This is trivial setup.
Although you don't say exactly what Mac and printer you are using, is it a desktop? Laptop it is definitely easier not to plug it in, but a desktop you can plug in the TC and it will all sit happily together.
How is the printer connected and to what?
I am not sure why you need such quick help.. this is all minor setup stuff.. and 18months in todays world is like permanent man.
Your multiple A, B, C are more confusing than helpful.
The best choices without more info.. are to replace the existing wireless router with the TC. ie your option B.. but how to do this depends on the type of connection. Is it cable or adsl? Can you easily bridge the existing modem router.. if that is what it is?
Think carefully in the ideal world what would you like..
    and what do you have..
We can probably suggest ways and means to fit what you like to what you have.. without introducing a stack of options that are doing your head in.

I am running Windows 7 on my laptop. I just created a new wifi network and my Photosmart C6280 is attached via cable to the router. Now my print doc from my laptop goes wirelessly to the print queue but does not print. How can I make it begin to print?

Here something in the router is the printer IP set so that the computer knows what IP to print to? I know on my network printer with a Netgear router I have to set two IP address for both printer so that when I install printer software it knows where to find the printer and set the right print driver to the right printer. Did you do that? I could be that it can't find the printer on the network so that is why it gets stuck in the queue. You have to make a Static IP printer address so the print software knows where to send the print command to.

  • I am not able to select a new network printer just installed at work to print to from Firefox. I have tried to reset the printer settings, but this did not work. Do I need to map Firefox to this new printer?

We recently had a new printer installed at work that has been set as the Default printer on my computer. When I go to print something from Firefox, I am not able to select the new printer from the printer window in the print box. The new printer does not show up

From another computer, go to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/, click "Free download" button, click "Save File" button, select your flash drive in "Save as" window. "Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe" file will be saved in your flash drive.
You just need to insert it in your new computer and double-click on "Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe" from Windows Explorer and follow instructions.

  • 8.1 Found Workgroup printer. I'm not on Workgroup! Need new Printer?

    Hello,
I have an Epson color 580 printer from like 15 years ago. Worked great with XP. When I tried to print with Windows 8.1, it directed me to save the file as an .xps or something. I couldn't get the .xps to print. I did some reasearch and people said to disable
the windows .xps viewer or whatever it's called in controll panel and make my printer the primary printing device. I disabled and removed the default .xps viewer and the fax under the printers section which automatically moved my printer ('USB Printer') up
from 'secondary' to 'primary' but it still wouldn't print. Then I realized I didn't install the printer driver. I put the driver CD in but nothing at all happened. I went to Epson's site and downloaded the XP driver because it was the latest version. It gave
an error after installing but I restarted and tried to print anyway. When I tried to print, it said 'no printers were set up' and asked to 'install one?' so I hit yes, but it found the printer on someone else's computer in another room of this house and I
thought I wasn't on any sort of network/workgroup sharing and I don't want to be. I had 'find printer and devices on network..." set to OFF in settings. I have eveything that I can see in settings set to not be on the Workgroup/Network sharing. I tried
"The printer that I want isn't here" but that didn't work. With XP, when I used to format, it would show me the name(s) of the workgroups during the format, and I would never join what was default named WORKGROUP. When formatting Windows 8.1, it
didn't show anything about workgroups while I installed it.
The last thing I want is to possibly have my data shared on the network. I've had 8.1 installed for a few days now but I haven't taken anything from my external drive that I saved from my XP machine in case it can be read from other computers in this house
or via Wi-Fi. I really need that data but have been waiting because of this.
So, besides letting me know how I can make sure I'm 0% on the workgroup network if that's even possible, do I need to buy a newer printer to use with windows 8.1 or can I make the Epson color 580 work?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Bill,
There is quite a few questions in your post so I will try to cover them. First, I am happy to hear your choice to use Windows 8, but regarding your workgroup issue. All Windows OS will be part of a workgroup, often called (by default)
Workgroup or Home. If any other computer on your network is using the same workgroup name and is sharing e.g. printers it might result in you see it, but my guess is, you can’t connect to it without the right username and password. Another new feature you
need to be aware of in Windows 8 is the HomeGroup feature
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/homegroup which is Workgroup on steroids and will allow users in the same HomeGroup to share content across a home network, e.g. printers, pictures movies etc. That mentioned, none of this is
enabled by default. However if you accept the network to be a home network some sharing features will be enabled (based on the location awareness in the Windows Firewall), and I guess you have accepted this otherwise network discovery wouldn’t be active –
that said, it can be differ in Windows 8 versions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions)
Regarding your printer it might be a good solution to go get e new printer, however you might be able to make it work by using a generic Epson printer driver or by using Epson Universal Printing. Unfortunately Universal Printing is for
    selected Epson printers only.
My Epson knowledge is limited, but a quick search gave me an idea, how about try to use the EPSON Creativity Suite 1.30 for Windows 7 (http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ProductHome.aspx?lng=en-IE&data=qBjAbS6NcI1PPmGd+PArU002FvIhL+ZEhLyrbsKseXRJHfYU003D&tc=6)
and see if that will do the trick – ensure you select the appropriate driver, 32-bit vs. 64-bit.

  • HP CP4005n printer won't print - network connectivity seems to be lost - Desparate!

Greetings (and help me please, I'm at the end of my rope :-))
Recently, I discovered my HP CP4005n would no longer print - documents would just remain
    queued.
To make a long story short, I think the networking portion of this printer has died, but I need help
confirming this, and if so, how can I repair it.  Here is what I have tried:
    1) First, the status lights on the printer where the ethernet connects lights up when I plug the ethernet cable in, so I know the printer is at least electrically connected to my network.
    2) No matter what I try, I cannot successfully "ping" the printer's ip address.  I have confirmed the
IP address of the printer by using the printer's "print configuration" menu item - which lists the IP
address, so I know I am using the correct IP address.
    3) When I try using the "HP Network Diagnostic Utility", the utility successfully detects another HP
printer on my network, but does not detect the CP4005n.
    4) To ensure the network itself was not problematic, I obtained a small hub, and connected only the
printer and a laptop to it, rebooted everything, and tried to ping the printer - still get no response.
    5) The printer otherwise seems to work well - I can print the internal test pages/calibration pages,
etc., from the menu on the printer's front panel, but cannot get it to print from any PC on my
    network.
    6) I tried disabling the virus scan/security tool on one of the PCs (Norton) to make sure that wasn't
the problem, but it made no difference.  Previously, the printer was working fine with this software,
so I don't think it is the cause.
    7) My network has a mix of Windows XP and Vista PCs - although I just got a new HP 1160t which is
    running Windows 7.
Any clues as to what my next steps should be?  This is a fairly new printer and it was fairly expensive
for a home printer, so buying a new printer is not an option (yet) unless I can prove that the
printer is somehow damaged as to make repair too costly.  In general, the printer itself works
great, and print quality is excellent, it just appears connectivity is the problem.
    What should I do next?

  • Hi I would be grateful if someone can help me, I have just bought a canon wireless printer, I only have an iPad so I can not install the cd that comes with the new printer yet it says it is compatible. How do I get it working I have a pay as you go 3G sim

I do not use the Internet using wifi I use 3G mobile broadband and if I do need wifi it tells me I have to pay for it, but I can not work out how to install or connect my iPad with my new printer if there is not a cd slot or USB port. I only have an iPad no computer so how on earth do I use my printer with it if it I can't install the printer cd. I though I would be able to use Bluetooth and it would pick it up automatically but I am really confused now and don't know what to do please help.

The iPad uses AirPrint technology to print to a printer. Check this Apple support page to see if your printer is listed as being AirPrint compatible.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
If your printer works with AirPrint you will need a Wi-Fi network in order to connect. That Wi-Fi network does not need to be connected to the Internet. As James Ward4 says, you'll need a Wi-Fi router to set up your network. Most routers require that a computer be used during the setup process. Perhaps you could use someone's computer to do the setup if you do not had one yourself. Once the router is set up you should be able to print.

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

This is a brand new printer, has never printed a page correctly. The ink is barely visible like it is out of color, but it shows all is fine. Is there something to clean or an adjustment to fix this?

    Hello revlib,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Turning off the Wireless Direct on the LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw should have disabled the SSID from broadcasting. Since disabling from the front display did not resolve, let us try from the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
To access the EWS you need to enter the I.P address for the M251nw into the address bar of your web browser. The I.P address can be collected by touching Setup ()> Reports> Network Summary.
Once in the EWS, click Network> Wireless Direct Setup> select Off and Apply.
