New private window opens regular new window.

I recently got prompted by the browser to do a refresh, so I went ahead. Now, when I attempt to open a new private window, the program opens a "regular" new window. Should I completely uninstall Firefox and reinstall it? I didn't have this issue prior to installing version 37. Thanks in advance for the help!
Edit/Update: checked the settings and it appears the behavior was defaulted to always use private mode. Solved.

  • Problem: Ctrl+Shift+P does not work to toggle private browsing. It opens up a new private window, but no longer will toggle back to regular mode.

Opening private browsing w/ Ctrl+Shift+P works fine. But when I try to toggle back, it just opens up a new private window.
Is this a bug? Or an intentional change in the newest version?
Those of us who depend on keyboard shortcuts are often overlooked in software revisions. Users like me want to keep working without leaving the keyboard to grab a mouse...
    Any suggestions or advice?

    Hello,

can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
Then it's not the same issue.
If Firefox is set to '''Never remember history''', then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item ''Stop Private Browsing'' will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
    * [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

  • Firefox just updated to V21 now I can't right click to "open in new window" only "new tab" or "new PRIVATE window"

Because I'm a bit of a dinosaur I don't use tabs, preferring to use new windows instead. Since the upgrade to V21, when I right click I don't get offered the option to open in a new window, only a new tab or a "private" window. How do I get back to choosing "non-private" windows ?

That is how it works. Current Firefox version make you close and restart Firefox after toggling the History setting that changes Private Browsing mode.
In permanent mode you can only open new PB mode windows.
Future Firefox versions will support Private Browsing per tab, this is already available as an extension.
    *Private Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/private-tab/
The Firefox menu button gets purple or you get a purple PB mask on the menu bar or tab bar (Linux) if you are in a PB tab and all Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underlining unless you are in permanent PB mode.

  • When i click on "New Private Window", it's opening new window but without private window icon. Resolve my issue

Menu > New Private Window - it is opening a new window without Private Window Icon.
    Please resolve my issue.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • 20.0.1: File== New Window & New Private Window will not open then Firefox will not stop running when application is closed

Although nothing appears to be happening when clicking on either New Window or New Private Window there seems to be processes started because when I try to close Firefox and reopen, I get an error message saying that Firefox is already running. My only option then is to stop the processes via Task Manager. I have tried (several times) to uninstall and reinstall.

Although advised not to, I finally hit the reset button in the Save Mode Window. This corrected the problem. I suspect a faulty add-on - I try and reject many. I will add them back on at a time as I develop the need. Thanks for you help.

  • I want the cursor to be in the address bar when creating a new window; it works for new tabs and in a new private window, but not in safe mode.

I have tried following the advice offered in the few different threads I have found on this but nothing fixes it. I want the cursor to be in the address bar when I open a new window and/or when firefox opens without restoring a previous session. I fixed the issue for new tabs via about:config but this doesn't work for new windows. I tried safe mode and the problem persists. In new private windows the cursor is in the address bar.

The search box in about:home steals the cursor. Changing your home page to something else will cause the cursor to start in the address bar for new windows.

  • How can I prevent sites from opening private windows?

Many websites, such as Moodle (classroom tool) and YouTube try to open certain new content, especially Google-hosted content, in private windows. In may cases, such as YouTube comment panes, there is now way to avoid this, and even if there is I forget sometimes.
Private windows clog up my Recent Windows history, which I depend on for things like keeping my webcomics organized, and cannot be merged into normal windows in order to prevent this. As a result, if I don't want to do a great deal of of tab reorganizing every day, I can't use any of these sites.
Please tell me how to either disable site-opened private windows, or close private windows without them appearing in my Recently Closed Windows list. Better yet, make the latter a permanent part of the browser; a private window that leaves no traces isn't much good when a snooper can simply reopen it.

I assume that you mean pop-up windows that might be left unnoticed when they are opened behind the current Firefox window.
You can modify the behavior and change these prefs to open all links in tabs:
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow<br />1: current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
You can change the value of the browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction pref to 0 to open all JavaScript window.open() calls in a tab
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location bar and accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

  • Why Can't I Right-click Open A Bookmark Into A Private Window?

    Hello Mozilla,
I have always wondered why am I not allowed to right-click open any of my bookmarks from a normal window into a "Private Window" like in Opera or "Incognito Window" like in Google Chrome???
Why do I first have to click open the menu(or Ctrl+Shift+P), click "New Private Window" just so I can then be able to use my bookmarks in Private mode. In Google Chrome and Opera I don't need to open a Private Window. I can just right-click any bookmark in a normal window and automatically open it into a private window for many years now.
Why can't Firefox do the same?

Why can't it do it natively like Opera and Chrome?
"You will also have the choice in the context menu to open a bookmark in a new Private Tab."
How do I open/access "context menu"?
Also this Add-on does not solve the issue. It still requires me to open a menu, open a "Private tab, then click one of the bookmarks instead of the direct right click-bookmark-into-Private/Incognito-Window method of Opera and Chrome.
