New Pro what to do with Powerbook

First-
How do you know which version of the powerbook you have? I think mine is Ti, but not 100% sure.
Second-
I got a new PRO- wow it's nice- it took awhile before I could muster up giving up the powerbook. So I think i'm going to gulp sell the old one. It's still in good condition, but how do I clear my personal prefrences, passwords, etc? I've never done this before?
Any help would be great!

I tried to do that but it said that the software could not replace newer software to older.
That sounds like the message that is displayed when an attempt is made to install an older OS over a newer one. Did you first try to erase the HD and zero it? Boot from the install disc, at the very first screen, go to the Installer Menu, open Disk Utility, select your HD, click on Erase, click Options, and select Zero All Data.
So I just manually took things off cleared all my libraries, passwords, settings, and made a new amdin account. SO hopefully that will work!!
Certainly it will "work," but as I said before, if you have ever had anything on your HD which you would not want others to have access to . . . whomever ends up with your PB will be able to access much of your data with a relatively inexpensive and easy to use data recovery utility. "Erasing" a file does not really erase the data, it simply deletes the directory information necessary to access files through ordinary means. Data recovery utilities are meant to retrieve data from files which have had their directories damaged or deleted.
Zeroing the HD gets rid of everything, directory and data, and writes zeroes over the entire HD. For the truly paranoid (who don't want to spend the money on putting a new HD in), 8 Way Random Write Format writes random data over the entire HD 8 times . . . I'm not sure anyone could recover anything after that.
Guess it depends on what you've had on your HD and your level of trust.

  • New iMac, what to do with Macbook Pro

    Hi there,
Okay, I have me new 27" iMac and all my files transferred, but I'm unsure of what to do with my Macbook Pro. (And don't say send it to me! )
Is there an easy way to keep all my files synced between the two? I'm not sure if I will use my MBP any more, I never really travelled with it anyplace and I have an iPad for my overnight trips.
    My MBP:
17" 1920x1200 high resolution matte display
    2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
    8600GT 256MB Nvidia graphics
    4GB of DDR2
    160GB harddrive
    OS X 10.6.7
This thing runs great and has served me well for the last two years. I thought about selling the MBP, I would rather have somebody use it rather than have it sit on a shelf. I think that the small harddrive might scare some people off, so I thought aobut upgrading it before I sell. I've heard that install a SSD will really increase the performance, but there is a much higher cost there.
    Looking for some ideas/suggestions.
    Thanks, Mark

Thanks, I sell and buy things on Craigslist, and Jason has some good info. Since my MBP is about 3 years old, I won't be going through that effort.
I'll list again on Craigslist and see how it goes. I looked into the Apple recycle plan and they indicate that they would give me about $550 in a Apple gift card. Could use that to buy my wife a new iMac or new MBP.
    Thanks, Mark

  • Anyone with a new iPod Shuffle that works with Powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.9 ???

I just bought the new iPod Shuffle also and my Mac OSX 10.3.9 operating system is not recognizing the iPod. This is a big issue since they are supposed to be compatible.
I called AppleCare 2 times and spent 1hr+ at the Apple Store Genious Bar. Here's the deal ... basically the new iPod Shuffle is NOT compatible with 10.3.9 ... I would guess you are having the same issue. My iPod Shuffle works fine with Tiger OS. The Genious Bar tested my computer with Tiger OS to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue and the iPod Shuffle worked fine ... but not with 10.3.9. This is definately an operating system compatibility issue.
Let me know if anyone has the same issue or better yet ... if you iPod works with Powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.9.
    TS

I too purchased a new Shuffle and could not get it to work with any software on my PowerBook G4 running the latest Panther (10.3.9). (Only the Disk Utility could see the Shuffle.) I also tried it on my PowerMac G5 running the latest Panther Server, and my PowerMac G4 running the latest Tiger. Given that multiple hardware AND OS configurations were failing, I had to conclude that it was some errant software I had installed on all 3 machines. (As an additional indicator, NONE of my machines would play DVDs anymore: inserting a DVD produced the dreaded "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read.")
The culprit turned out to be the kernel extensions installed by my (older) Lexar Secure jump drive. These files are in directory /System/Library/Extensions.
    IOLexarEncryptFilter.kext
    IOSCSILexarCommandsDevice.kext
    LexarFilterScheme.kext
I do not know if it is just one of them or all 3, but I moved all of these files out of the Extensions directory and rebooted. Presto: the DVDs play and the new Shuffle can be seen by iTunes, etc.
Note that I do not necessarily recommend messing about in the the kernel extensions directory. If anyone has a better method for removing these extensions (I couldn't find anything on the Lexar support site), then I would be grateful for your input.

  • Swapping HDs with new MBP: What to do with OS X?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i7 quad-core from the Apple Store Thursday morning with the 750GB 5400RPM hard drive. I now have time to set up the new machine but I am hung up on how best to deal with swapping hard drives. My current MBP has a 640GB 7200RPM hard drive with OS X 10.6.6 installed. I am a photographer so the faster drive makes a big difference with large photo catalogs. I had planned on swapping out the new 750GB 5400RPM drive for my current 640GB 7200RPM hard drive and then get back to work, however, I am concerned that the OS X installed on the 640GB 7200RPM hard drive will not be compatible with the new machine's processor. Should I do the swap and then boot up from the new laptop's OS X install disks and do a OS X only install? I have never done a OS X only install/update, will any other data be altered, any suggestions on how to proceed? Should I just swap, start up and then run Apple Software Update?
I would prefer avoiding an erase and install, cloning, migration, Adobe registration issues, etc and going the HD swap and OS X disk update route if it can work.
    Thanks for your input,
    Chad

I found this discussing looking to do the same thing-ish.
I just bought a new i7 quad MacBook Pro (delivered today). Less than 4 weeks ago, I had picked up an i5 MacBook Pro. Since I'm still in my return window, I decided the buy the new one, do the hard drive shuffle and return the less new one.
I have a 500gb 7200rpm drive AND a 120gb SSD in the drive bay. I really never considered just swapping the drives into the new machine, but I thought I'd search and see if anyone had any success.
I had a couple thoughts on how I'm going to do the shuffle:
    1) Superduper clone the SSD back onto my 500gb. I the system as it is now started life on the 500gb. Superduper (registered) will do a backup only updating the changed files which shouldn't be too bad. I have my user directories (separate from the startup disk) on the 500gb so SD won't have to copy any of those files. Then I figured I could use the migration software to copy all my 'stuff' (minus user directory) back onto the newly reformatted SSD with 10.6 installed onto the new MBP.
    2) I was noticing that migration assistant can work from Time Machine, so I'll probably do that since my SSD time machine backup doesn't contain my gigantic user directory. I'll still do a SuperDuper backup just to be safe.
I'm tempted to throw my hard drive into an external usb to see if it boots just for the heck of it.

  • Moving to new Mini, what to do with existing Airport settings

    Hi Everyone!!
I'm picking up my new Mac Mini this afternoon (my older one is now in year 5!). The question I have is, what is the best way to hook up my Airport Express for the new Mini? Since I don't expect to use both computers on my wireless network, I'd like to simply use my Express (used exclusively for my Canon wireless printer) via my new machine. Do I do a reset to factory default for the new Mini? I have just one 23" Cinema display, so I assume I will not be adding the new Mini to the existing network, but starting all over with installing the software from the disk and setting everything up from scratch. Or, is there a possibility of adding the new machine to the network after unplugging the older computer, with the Airport settings intact? With Airport Express still plugged into my UPS and active, is this feasible?
    Thanks

    JiminReno wrote:
One question comes to mind: You mentioned no need to install the Express disk on the new Mini, simply join the network. As I will only use the Airport network for my wireless printer -- my internet connection is via an ethernet cable connected to an ATT U-verse router -- will I have any need for the Airport utility that's on the disk, the same utility on my old Mini? What if I need to check on my settings after I disconnect my older Mini. I know, maybe a stupid question.
    hi jim,
your new mini will have the current (as of the date it shipped) version of airport utility installed. the settings are on the express not in airport utility. you manage the settings on the express with airport utility.
you shouldn't run into problems. if you do, you still can pop in the disk and install the software that's on it.
and you can always post back here

  • Got new ipad; data plan transferred to new SIM; what to do with old SIM?

Hi, I bought a "new iPad" and just set it up as a restore of my old iPad. It seems to have automagically transferred the data plan from my old sim to the new sim that was already in the iPad. The old SIM isn't working any more, I tested it.
I am giving my old iPad (iPad 2) to a friend, I'm wondering if I should give them the old SIM card as well, it seems like it's ready to be set up as a new account.
When I put the old sim card in the new iPad, it says there's no data left on it and asks if I want to set up an account.
There was also a note that you could transfer an old plan to this SIM just by logging in to the account for the other SIM, so I think this automatically happened with the new iPad.
Should I give my friend the old SIM as well as let them use that to set up a new account, or should I trash or store it and ask them to go to AT&T store to get a new sim?
    Thanks

Your friend can use the old SIM card.

  • Purchased a new mac, what to do with dreamweaver?

I have a copy of dreamweaver for windows that I purchased for my windows desktop.
Recently, I bought a macbook air for travel. I'm aware that each personal copy can be installed onto two different computers.
The only problem is, since the dreamweaver that I have is for windows, I don't think it can readily be installed onto my mac.
    What to do?

Install Windows on your Mac via Bootcamp or Parallels?! Other than that you'll have to buy a Mac version eventually...

  • New computer - what to do with my CC apps?

    Hello,
At this moment my CC apps are installed on a Windows computer, but  I'm going to buy a new computer (Apple iMac). My question is; are there any necessary steps to be taken to ensure I will be able to download and (re-)install my CC product on my new computer (e.g. uninstall windows, install Mac OS)?
I look forward to receiving your answer.
    Best regards,

Simply run Help --> Sign Out from any of the programs to free up the activation. Beyond that there is nothing more required.

  • Upgraded to MacBook Pro, what to do with iMac?

    Hey guys,
I just got an MBP. Have been trying to sell my 2009 iMac for a month, but no one seems to want it (I live in a pretty-much PC and Android-dominated location). Is there anything I could use it for to complement my MBP? For now it just gathers dust on my desk.. poor thing!
P.S. Such a shame theren't any ways to recycle those products, I've accumulated old iPods and iPhones over the years and just cannot bring myself to throw them away, even though they're completely out-of-date today.

It does depend on where you live. For example, is there a "freecycle" group in your area where you could post?
    https://www.freecycle.org
Perhaps a charitable organization would be interested?
Or you could try to sell it on eBay.

  • I HATE my new MACBOOK PRO, it will not let me open any PDF files and I downloaded the ADOBE READER three freaking times and it keeps saying that all the files are corrupt. I would rather have my 2008 Dell at this point. what is wrong with this thing

I HATE my new MACBOOK PRO, it will not let me open any PDF files and I downloaded the ADOBE READER three freaking times and it keeps saying that all the files are corrupt or damaged. I would rather have my 2008 Dell at this point. what is wrong with this thing

Perhaps the PDF files are corrupted.
Hit the command key and spacebar, a blue Spotlight in the upper right hand corner appears, now type Preview and press return on the Preview program.
Now you can try opening the PDF's from the file menu and see what's going on.
If they are corrupted, perhaps they are trojans from your Windows PC or gotten from a bad location online.
Download the free ClamXav and run a scan on the possibly infected folder.

  • HT3231 how do i   TRANSFER MY PHOTOS AND VIDEOS FROM MY MAC PRO POWERBOOK G4 TO MY NEW MACBOOK PRO,  WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY,  THANKS

I HAVE A MAC POWERBOOK G4 AND WOULD LIKE TO TRANSFER MY FILES, PHOTOS AND VIDS TO MY NEW MAC PRO,  WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST METHOD??  THANKS ROB

I think the easiest way is to use a firewire cable (you will need on like this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Firewire+400+to+800+cable&oe=utf-8&rls= org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=120962573 04625337030&sa=X&ei=PytQT9r4NtOBsgL9s_C6Dg&ved=0CHYQ8gIwAA).
Power up the Power Mac G4 and hold the "T" key while it is booting (this puts the G4 notebook in Firewire Target Disk mode).  Connect the G4 notebook to the newer MacBook Pro and use the Migration assistant (/Applications/Utilities) OR browse through the files and copy what you want.

  • If I buy a MacBook pro now, what will happen with it once the Lion OS makes it's appearance? Will I need to buy a new one again?

If I buy a MacBook pro now, what will happen with it once the Lion OS makes it's appearance? Will I need to buy a new one again?

Lion will run on most Intel machines. It will not run on the following machines:
MacBook Pro (sold before October 2006)
    MacBook (sold before November 2006)
Mac Mini (sold before August 2007)
    iMac (sold before September 2006)
It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo (or later CPU). Those machines listed above were all Intel Core Duo machines and with the exception of one of the Mac Minis, an Intel Core Solo. So we're talking 4+ year old machines. I have not tested Lion on a machine with anything less than 2GB of RAM.
Wikipedia has a pretty good public summation of what's known so far and it's quite accurate - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Lion
The biggest thing of note so far is that you cannot install/run Rosetta. Which maybe problematic for some users.

  • I'm trying to sync my iPad with my new pro and i get message saying 5 computers authorised ?? what to do

i'm trying to sync my iPad with my new pro and i get message saying 5 computers authorised ?? what to do

    1.  De-authorize one of your five computers and then authorize your new Pro.
Or, if you don't have five computers and got rid of them before you de-authorized them...
In iTunes, click your iTunes user ID in the upper right corner of the iTunes Store.  Select Account and then press the "De-Authorize All" button.  All of your computers will be de-authorized.  Then it is just a matter of re-authorizing the computers that you want to use with iTunes.

  • Trying to transfer data to my new Macbook Pro?  My current Pro has Lion from last week, but my new Pro came with Snow Leopard. When I connected firewire it said I can't transfer the data because of the OS conflict, what can I do? I downloaded Lion?

I don't have the CD for Lion, I downloaded it on line through the store!  I'm at a loss...

We need a little more detail to be really helpful.
Did you download and install Lion on the new MB Pro?
If you didn't that is probably the problem you can migrate from older to newer OSes but not the reverse, so if the new MB Pro is still on 10.6 that's likely the problem.
If you downlaod Lion on the new Pro, you might want to stop the install that starts a automatically and follow these instructions to make a bootable DVD.
If Lion is sucessfully installed on both machines then I'm not sure at this point what the issue is.

  • What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?

What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?
I have just started up a new project.
Every time I try to ad a clip in top of each other a "general error" shows up. The sequence viewer turned red and it displays that I have to close and reopen the window to restore.
The only "new thing" I do - is the use/brand of camera.
Now I use the canon D5 mark 3 for my project (before D5 mark 2)
What's wrong??? Do I need to update my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 And how do I do this???
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Did you use Log & Import?  Or did you at least convert the D5 files before importing?  FCP doesn't work with those files natively.
