New problem printing from InDesign CS4 in Lion

After having great success with Aisolve's earlier fix on printing from InDesign CS4 after upgrading to Lion, I'm having a new problems after installing the OS X 10.7.2 upgrade last week. When I try to print from  InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to my Lanier 445c/Ricoh C4500 at my workplace I get the following error message:
"Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem."
This seems like a different issue this time, as I'm able to print to my home printers, an HP LasertJet 2600n and an HP Photosmart C4270. I thought it might be a printer driver problems, but I've gone to Lanier's site and they don't have any new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.7.
I also some research on Adobe's site, and found this message affecting CS1, 2 & 3. I tried the only fix that seemed to apply to me, which was re-naming/deleting the InDesign Deafults and InDesign SavedData files. (I have this problems even when I'm printing a text-only file without any graphics.) This fix didn't work.
I can print to the Lanier/Ricoh from Acrobat 9, and all my non-Adobe software just fine, so my work-around to date has been exporting to PDF and printing from there. My big problem is that I need the "Print Booklet" feature in InDesign for a big job I've got coming up this week. Can't do that from Acrobat. :-(
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

mmsteer,
I think I may be able to help you with this problem, which I was having with CS4 when I first upgraded to Lion, and others were having with CS3. This fix is courtesy of Aisolve on these discussion boards:
Remove the Adobe PDF PPDs from the following folders:
OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/en.lproj,
OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_CN.lproj,
OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Ja.lproj,
OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/ko.lproj,
OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_TW.lproj,
Be sure to go to your system Library, not your user Library.
Also, regarding my current problem, I spoke with an Apple tech person and found that the 10.7.2 upgrade apparently is the culprit, and is incompatible with wireless printing to my Lanier printer. I CAN print connected through USB. That's a work-around for now, but I'll need to contact Lanier about upgrading their driver for OS X 10.7.2.
Aisolve was helping me with this issue, too, and assures me that if I'm able to generate a postscript file (which I was), and able to generate a PDF by distlling it through Adobe Distiller (which I am), then I can safely assume that the problem lies with the hardware, in this case the printer driver. This lines up with what Apple told me.

i'm a PC to MAC newbe. Also moved from CS2 toCS4.
can't for the life of me figure out how to print from indesign in landscape layout without losing the left 2.5 inches of print. having the same trouble with #10 envelopes.
    your help would be appreciated!

Usually this problem has to do with choosing the correct size and orientation of paper, both page size and print paper size.
IOW, if you want to print to a #10 envelope, start a new document that is exactly the size of a #10 envelope. Then when you print it, choose a paper size that is exactly the size of a #10 envelope.
What size page are you printing, and what paper size are you choosing when you print it?

  • Color problems printing from InDesign CC 2014 (and CC)

When I print an ad I'm working on from InDesign, the color is off by a lot. If I save the doc as a pdf, it prints correctly from the pdf. If I print from the same InDesign doc on another machine, it prints fine. The problem is not only with this document. Using Bridge I have synched the color, restarted the computer, reinstalled InDesign CC 2014, trashed the Preferences—basically I've done everything listed on the InDesign printing troubleshooting page. Since the documents print correctly from another machine (all the settings are the same), I shouldn't have to use a work-around. I can't be making a pdf every time I need to print from InDesign—which is all the time. Any help appreciated.

Are you using the same printer and driver on both machines?

  • Printing from InDesign CS4 on Mac Snow Leopard to HP officejet pro K5400

I recently started using a Mac Snow Leopard with InDesign CS4; for awhile it printed fine. Then, dealing with a book mss, I had to get InDesign to convert the document to a PDF, and since that time, the Officejet Pro k5400 will only print in what appears to be the best quality, even when I tell it to print in fast draft, and even set that as a preset. Anybody had that problem? Anybody have any suggestions as to what is going on here? How can I get the printer to print in fast draft? Thanks for any help,

  • Laser printing from Indesign CS4 to Oki laser C5750

I am printing booklets which contain mostly text with quite a few B/W photographs and colour photographs. I have iMac running OS 10.6.5 with Indesign CS4 printing to OKI C5750 laser printer. The problem is that I am using the colour toner at a very rapid rate (about 400 pages before one or more of them runs out) I am sure my personal density factor is high but I cannot find a way to set print settings to minimise the use of colour toner (other than one tick box).
The manuals do not seem to help nor does the Oki tech support (although they are very pleasant). Is there anyone who can advise so that I do overspend my small pension?

Hmmmm, forum seems a tad low this morning. 20 minute lag between the email and the post that now appears. I guess that explains the second comment.
Glad the image mode check worked out. I hate to tell you how common it is to find "grayscales" that are really RGB with a filter or desaturated.

  • Question on workflow for high end inkjet prints from InDesign CS4

Photographs are imaged in Photoshop using Adobe 1998 as a profile. These files are linked in InDesign. My question is how should I output the files from InDesign. I've tried "High Quality Print" saving the files as a PDF then parsing those files with Photoshop as high res files. But the files lack the quality in the original photoshop files.
My system in completely calibrated and I'm quite used to creating output for both offset printing (generally as per vendors instructions) as well us highend digital printing.
    Thanks ahead for your comments.

You need an ICC profile that defines the destination color space. In this case the high end ink jet.
This will be an RGB profile. You can use a factory profile corresponding to the printer model and paper (this would be part of the printer software install), or you can have a custom profile generated by reading a color target printed on the device. There are online services that can actually create the profile if you send them a print out. Follow their specific instructions if you choose to do this.
Once you have the print device ICC, check the Color Settings in ID. Make sure the RGB policy is "Preserve Embedded". As long as this was the setting at document creation, the image Adobe RGB profiles were honored.
To double check, look in the Links panel. Under ICC you should see Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
You can also right or control click on an individual image. Go to Graphics: Image Color Settings. By profile it should say Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
In the print dialog, Color Management, select Document radio button. Color Handling, Let InDesign Handle Colors. Printer Profile, select the Printer ICC. Do a small test print, then check the result to see if it's satisfactory.

  • Scaling issue when printing to HP devices from InDesign CS4

I seem to have a recurring error printing from InDesign CS4 (OS X Leopard 10.5.8) to both my HP printers (C3180 & Officejet Pro 8500). When printing at 100% size, the artwork gets scaled up slightly. For example, creating a simple 5 x 5" box ends up coming out at 5.125 x 5.125" on the printed sheet (with no scaling turned on in the print dialogue).
I've not been able to find any support issues related to this on either HP or Adobe's site. I suspect it's s driver/postscript incompatability issue. The same artwork prints at the correct size when exporting to PDF and printing from Acrobat.
Curious if anyone else is experiencing the same problem.

A large percentage of problems we see related to printing seem to be with HP printers. Are you doing borderless or anything like that? What is the page size and scaling in the driver?

  • Cannot print to Adobe PDF from InDesign CS4 under Snow Leopard (10.6.2)

    Hello All,
Hopefully the subject line says all. Running SL and CS4, and after manually deleting the "old" Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, I am unable to print to PDF — or select "Save As Adobe PDF" under the Mac OS print dialog. This is insanely frustrating on may levels, as this was once a 3-minute operation and now has stretched into two days of futile searching for a solution.
There is a "tech doc" somewhere out there that offers a "solution". But beware, as it has not worked for me. Once you manually search for and remove the Adobe PDF 9.0 driver, you are supposed to magically be able to select the "Save As Adobe PDF" option. This is not the case for me.
Am trying to print, once again, from InDesign CS4 (NOT via the Export command as that will not allow me to set page size, or print separations). There is no Adobe PDF driver there anymore and there is no option to print PDFs. Of course, I can rest easier with the knowledge that everything is easier now in SL.

For a long time I was printing out of InDesign CS4 to a PS file and Distilling to a PDF, either composite or separated. Then Snow Leopard came along and that workflow seemed no longer available. It seems some well meaning people didn't understand a professional DTP workflow.
I had to work between two Macs to create a project and then make separations.
Eventually I went back to the Adobe InDesign forums and folks insisted that a Adobe PDF 9 printer should be available in my print drivers.
On that suggestion I completely uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and then reinstalled it.
It worked, I had the PDF printer back and can now print to a postscript file and do separations as I always have.
(Another story is that Snow Leopard killed my Epson 2200 printer)
At one stage I did an update of Acrobat 9 and it caused me to lose the Adobe printer again. Going through the procedure again brought it back and this time after a Acrobat 9 update it stuck.
In my opinion somebody screwed up. It's not enough to be able to create PDFs out of Microsoft Word. There are people out here trying to make a living and need to be able to create print separations for some offset printers.

  • Transferred CS4 to new MacBook Pro, now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. Help!

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro. I transferred my CS4 from my older MacBook Pro to my new computer, and although it seemed to be working fine now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. These fonts are installed on my new computer, can be found in InDesign CS4, and work fine within the program but will not appear in PDFs. The letters turn into rectangles. Does anyone know why, and how to fix that?
Help/input would be much appreciated. Thank you!
    Kristen.

you should properly install adobe products, not move, migrate or otherwise transfer them.

  • Printing from InDesign asking for computer login password

Hi. Just got new MacPro, CS4 Design Premium. Every time printing from InDesign asking for computer login password. Never happened with CS3. Is there any way to avoid job holding in printer's dialog box, waiting for authentification?  No problems printing from Acrobat, Photoshop or Entourage etc. Checked computer preferences, nothing shows permission/security restrictions are applied. What could cause holding print jobs from InDesign?
Here's what it says in Status field: On Hold (Authentification required)...so I have to click “Resume” every time, enter password and only then it prints.
Printer: HP5100 laserJet. HP did not associated this issue with printer or drivers. Please help. Thanks!

    Thanks for your help, Marvin!
Sharing has been set up, PW is in keychain. Still asking for "authenification"..
After talking to Adobe tech support, here's the answer:
"Issue:  When attempting to print, customer is continually asked to authenticate.
Resolution:  Printer is possibly too old to understand the print data InDesign is outputting. Try updating drivers or using a newer printer".
I guess I will request new printed from management, mine is 2003...

  • Large PDFs from Indesign CS5 under Lion

Has anyone noctived the incredibly large PDFs exported from Indesign CS5 under OS X 10.7 Lion?...
When OS X 10. Snow Leopard all was great, though now I have noticed HUGE differences!!??
crazy. example Indesign exported to pdf 106mb
Print to file, then Distiller: 32mb
    BIG DIFFERENCE
    anyone else?
    thanks

Ok lets forget the Distiller part of this story, sorry.
My issue is that under Lion PDF's are WAY larger than in previous OS X (Snow Leopard etc)
I don't have any Mac on Snow Leopard to now show a comparison only previous PDF's made before Lion was installed and they are signifcantly smaller.
I just tested I think it is new documents made in Indesign CS5 in Lion.
Testing a indd file previously made in Snow Leopard I exported a PDF it produced the same size PDF as in Snow Leopard, so now I am confused slightly hoping I am wrong. Then I exported that same .indd as a .idml opened and saved as .indd then exported as a PDF it is 150kb larger... small difference yes, though  ot enough to worry about, so I tried with previous larger files... only to have them create the satisfactory sized pdf.
Ok, I am wondering if newly created documents are the issue?...
Moving on I found then I found this..  http://www.creativepro.com/article/drop-20-pounds-indesign
I have just done a space audit most of the file is the images, my only conclusion is that the images are containing meta data that is hogging?...

  • Cannot print from InDesign v3.0.1 on Mac Pro

I am attempting to print from InDesign v3.0.1 to a new Epson R3000 printer. Last week the connection and prints were fine. Now, when I select the "Print" dialog box, Indesign crashes.  Is there possibly a conflict between my older InDesign and running OSX v10.6.8 on a Mac Pro?  I re-installed InDesign and also re-installed the Epson print driver, with no luck.  Since I originally bought InDesign as part of the Creative Suite package, the "upgrade" cost to either the latest CS package, or stand alone ID, is $599.00.  Adobe sales told me my CS package serial number would not work with the $119 ID stand alone upgrade.  It is hard to justify $599 for a software I use at most four times a year.

Well folks, I downloaded the latest version of InDesign (CS5.5) and now I can at least print from my InDesign document.  Using Epson Profiles and Epson paper stock I can make decent prints on the new Epson R3000 printer.  But when I attempt to print InDesign documents (my photo portfolio pages) onto Hahnemuhle German Etching paper, using a Hahnemuhle ICC Profile, the photographic images are far too saturated and have a red/magenta cast.  I tried everything, including spending almost an hour on the phone with Epson support.  But, we could not come up with a solution.  Has anyone else had similar problems printing from an Epson R3000 and InDesign?  I can print TIFF photo files from Photoshop CS5 just fine, so clearly it has something to do with InDesign.  Suggestions are most welcome, thanks!  Mark W.

  • Printing from InDesign Using ICC Profiles

    Hello,
I'm trying to find the best way to print from InDesign to my Epson R2400. I'm a graphic design student, with a background in Photography. When printing images from photoshop, I always use the proper paper profile for the inkjet paper I'm using and I get spot-on results. My monitor is profiled, and I have a decent knowledge of color management.
When I print from InDesign, I achieve the best results using the Adobe RGB1998 output profile in the print dialogue. This produces fair results, but not as accurate as I get when printing images from photoshop using the appropriate paper profile. When I use a paper profile from InDesign (i.e. Epson SP2400 Enhanced Matte), the results are flat and washed out. I've tried opening the print driver dialog (via the "printer" button) and making sure that color management is turned "off" to avoid double-profiling, but this does not fix the problem. I've also tried checking the "print as bitmap" box in the InDesign print dialogue, but this only makes things worse.
Can anyone tell me why I can't print with an appropriate paper/profile via InDesign? I'm usign CS3, with a Macbook Pro, running Leopard. Epson R2400 with Epson Inks, Epson paper and matching Epson ICC Profiles.
    Thank You.

It is the monitor profile. Change profiles and you will see a different output each time.
The condition of the monitor can in no way affect the output, but as soon as you re-profile a change in the monitor settings the new profile will affect the output.
In theory if you can hardware calibrate the monitor and not create a new profile (what software might allow this?) there would be no changes to the print but what about what you see on the screen?
Of course this is all based on you creating a ID specific paper profile.
