New Problems in Tiger Classic (or iMac G5)

Hi folks,
I have the last version of Managing Your Money ever released and we have always been able to use it in Classic without any trouble at all. However, since we got Mac OS 10.4 (or maybe is was since we got the iMac G5; since they were nearly simultaneous, I'm not sure) MYM and/or Classic seems to display symptoms of a memory or other resource leak. That is, every window I open takes longer to open than the last one. Eventually, the program becomes practically unusable and I have to restart. If I keep using it without restarting, the iMac will eventually freeze and the force quit window won't even appear.
We have never had this problem on previous versions of OS X, nor on previous models of iMac (we've used OS X with classic on two different G3 iMacs and a G4 iMac).
Does anyone know of any differences that should be significant? Are there any Classic extensions that are known to have problems in Tiger or on G5 iMacs?
Sincere thanks,
Bill
iMac G5 20 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know MYM does it make no difference if you allocate more memory to it with file>Get Info>Memory, please?
My own G5 runs classic exactly as my older G4 does, and since my configuratin is hardly likely to match yours, what does that prove?
If it was my Mac, I'd copy the Classic System Folder, set the copy in Classic System Preference, set its Extension Manager Set to Mac OS (Base) then Restart Classic and reinstall MYM, which should now have nothing to interfere with it…

    Hi macmanjon;
What is the URL of this web site?
It sounds like they sold you a model specific set of install media that is not compatable with your hardware. I would try and see iuf you can get your money back.

  • Problems installing Tiger on 700mhz iMac

Hi - I think I have the answer, but wanted to double check with the forum experts!
I have a. I'm trying to install Tiger (that came with the next generation iMac), but when it starts up from the Tiger install disk (using external DVD drive), I get the "screen of death" (ie: black screen with giberish and a gray circle in the center).
I take it that my copy of Tiger is not retail and specific to my newer mac only? And that is why I'm getting this message?
Are there any copies to purchase for my older iMac? Thanks in advance for any help!
    Mike

    Hi jt202,
This forum is specifically for advice on the old G4 (Flat Panel) iMacs. Your problem seems to be related to using the iPhone. I suggest you repost in the iPhone forums.
EDIT: I see you already have.

  • Problems installing Tiger onto G3 Imac - please help!

    hi all.
i've tried to install tiger onto a g3 imac but i'm having some problems.
basically, once i've inserted the install dvd and restarted, the screen is either totally blank or it's very very dark and the desktop is sliding off to one side, plus the text and icons are blurred.
i checked that i didn't need to update the firmware first, and the computer said that i didn't need to.
does anyone have any idea what i can do? i don't have the original OS9 install disk any more and i'm starting to panic ...
    thanks in advance

    Jon,
Not to be silly but do you you have DVD capabilities? Not all G3s (mine included) have DVD drives. Is the firmware 4.1.9? What is your machines specs? Do you have enough ram, hard disk space?
I haven't read about these types of going ons, however on the Tiger OS X.4 discussion board Gulliver has an excellent check list/ decision tree.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607363
You may want to check that out as well as reposting your topic on the Tiger board.
Sorry I couldn't help more than possibly pointing you in the right direction.
    Good luck,

  • Classic option does not work in new installation of Tiger

This problem is in a new installation of Tiger 10.4.6 on a G4 Cube. First I ought to say I am really happy with the Tiger OS. It runs really well on my Cube. The problem is - the Classic option in the System Preference folder will not open. It starts up like it will, tells me I should update the Quicken version to 6.3, and when it has finished opening it flashes a Classic icon in the dock, which just as quickly disappears. I have tried to open it by opening an application that needs it to run, and I have tried to open it with extensions off, with the same result.
I can reboot to OS 9.2.2 and I have done that several times with no problem. I just wonder why the Classic option in Tiger is not working? Could it be a memory problem: not enough? I have 384MB

    Malcolm,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I read that there might be a possible extension problem in Classic, and I did try it with the extensions off as you suggested. It still will not start up. I will try again later from a "clean" start, and if all else fails I will call apple support, but I hate to do that as it's a bit like never, never land.

  • I just installed the new mountain lion software on my iMac.  I was currently running Snow Leopard.  My problem is with my mouse.  Now when I scroll down the page it moves in the opposite direction. I checked system S.P. - Natural for scroll feature.

I just installed the new mountain lion software on my iMac.  I was currently running Snow Leopard.  My problem is with my mouse.  Now when I scroll down the page it moves in the opposite direction. In system preferences I tried checking and unchecking Natural for scroll feature. Movement from side to side works fine.  Has anyone experienced this problem?

I think this new scrolling behaviour was introduced with Lion. You do get used to it pretty quickly (well I did). Are you sure that deselecting Natural Scrolling in Mouse Prefs doesn't re-instate the previous behaviour, it does here.

  • Tiger/Classic and USB problems

I have two instances where a USB device that worked in Panther/Classic will not work in Tiger/Classic.
One is StylusRIP from Epson that I use to print Postscript files with my Stylus 3000. Worked fine in Panther/Classic, since I upgraded to Tiger the printer is not recognized. The printer works in OSX using the non-Postscript driver, so I know that basic connectivty (cables, ports, etc.) is OK.
The other is a RoboLab USB infrared transmitter. Same scenario.
While troubleshooting the transmitter, I tried booting into OS9 (on my G4) and the connection was made. It worked fine. I tried the same thing with StylusRip, and it too worked fine, the printer was recognized. I can, as a workaround, output PS files or press-ready PDFs (since I won't be able to use any of my designs apps in Classic), reboot in 9 and print, but I'd rather find out how to fix the problem.
Can anyone tell me what could be different about the way Tiger handles USB that could affect the interoperability with devices/software that require Classic? I did find one post that recommended resetting the PRAM, so I will try that. Any other recommendations are welcome.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am running 9.2.2. The only thing that changed was the update to Tiger. I have called ESPON, and they refer me to Adobe because they licensed the RIP from Adobe. I've not had any success with that yet. The last update of RIP does not support the Stylus 3000 printer, and I don't think it's native anyway. The set-up I was using was a "non-supported workaround", so I may just be out of luck. Which is a pain, because the printer still has some miles on it. I may try to see if I can use an older Mac running 9.2.2 as a print server.
Robolab has an OSX native update out, so we will get that.
What I found curious was that both pieces of software, or the USB connectivity required by both, was broken by Tiger.

  • OS-9 applications crash Tiger Classic, worked fine in Panther Classic

    Greetings,
I recently installed OS-X Tiger and upgraded to 10.4.10 incl. all security and Java updates. Some older OS-9 applications (e.g., Chessmaster 4000 and some of my own software I created years ago), which ran flawlesslyl in the Panther Classic environment, now crash Tiger Classic. In fact, even 10.4.10 gets screwed. E.g., empty ghost windows appear that cannot be removed or the upper Tiger menu bar is empty. Only a computer restart sometimes solves the problem, not the forced quit of Classic or an OS-X Finder relaunch.
When I rebooted from OS-X Panther again, I got told that there was a problem with the "new Classic". So I set preferences for a different, not updated (by OS-X Tiger) 0S-9 System folder - and my old applications ran flawlessly again.
Right now I have to switch between Tiger and Panther. Is there a workaround to have Tiger Classic run older OS-9 applications? Obviously, there is a problem with the "new" Classic.
Some OS-9 applications like Photoshop 5.5 run well in Tiger Classic. Therefore, I can rule out a general problem with my Classic environment. OS-X updates do not exist for some scientific software I use.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
    Dietmar
PS: Apple states that there is no firmware update required for a G4 Quicksilver Mac.

Update: I realized that Tiger's new Classic environment cannot handle OS-9 applications that require 256 or fewer display colors for operation. In fact, the new Classic environment will not even start up successfully, if 256 colors are set.
That is not correct. I run Classic under Tiger with 256 colours fairly often. I have one very, very, very old game (Harpoon Classic) which won't run unless the system is set to 256 colours. Every now and again I still play it. Classic works with 256 colours, and it also starts up with 256 colours.
Classic does this with my iMac, and with my eMac, under Tiger, and with my beige G3 under Jaguar. (Or at least it did the last time I ran Classic on the beige.) The eMac shipped with Panther; Classic ran with 256 colours there, too.
I suspect that you have a different problem.
    Which applications are you using?

  • New problem w/ Safari opening gifs

I am having a new problem with Safari that I didn't have a couple months ago. On a certain websites if I open an image of a product to make it bigger, instead of a larger image I now get a window opening with no image. Instead in the example below all I seem to get is an image 4x4 pixels (at least that is what the new window title says). This occurs with any browser I have tried in OS X including iCab, Opera, and Firefox. However, using OS 9 Classic (and Windows), all the browsers bring up the enlarged image perfectly. My current settings have Javascript on and popup windows are allowed. I can't figure out what is going on here. Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.
Here is a link to an example where at the bottom there are images to enlarge a watch:
    http://www.ireplicastore.com/BR01-97-Power-Reserve/SS-Casing-White-Dial.html

You don't need to disable your pop-up blocker. All the small images have is a link to a larger .jpg image on their server. I have no problem viewing them.
So, having said that and noted that you are also on a G5 and 10.4.11, I can suggest the following:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2, but please see my footnote).
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
The new RealPlayer Plus (v.11) is still in beta and therefore free, but works well on Tiger. It includes a download function, and you can get that here:
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back.
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

  • Installing Tiger to a iMac G3-700 SE

    Hi everbody,
Recently purchased a DualCore G5 2GHz. Awesome machine. It came with pre-installed Tiger OS. I'd like to upgrade my older computer as well. Therefore I have a few questions, all help is highly appreciated.
1: Can I install Tiger to an iMac G3-700? Or is there a minium hardware requirement?
2: I assume Tiger installer CD is a DVD-Rom. Therefore my iMac was not able to read it. Is there any other way to use the installer CD toward older computers without DVD reading capabilities? What if I cpoy the installer CDs to an externa hard drive, can I run the install from there?
3: Do you think an iMac G3-700 (512mb ram) would be too slow on Tiger OS?
    Thanks in advance!

Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
    PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    Built-in FireWire
At least 256MB of physical RAM
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools
DVD drive for installation (get CD media for $9.95)
The Tiger retail install package and the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchased is on DVD media.
The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and system configuration specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac model. If this were possible, it would be a violation of the single user license agreement that you agreed to and against the law.
If your iMac meets all other minimum system requirements except for having a DVD drive, purchase the Tiger retail install package and if the iMac is capable of Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connect your old and new Mac together this way to install the Tiger retail install package on the iMac.
If not, you can use Apple's Media Exchange Program to exchange the Tiger retail DVD media for CD media.

  • Problems with  Bootcamp and an iMac 27".

Hi, I recently installed a full copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, purchased at Office Depot, on my fully upgraded iMac 27" (Core i5, 4GB, Radeon 4850). My intent was to use Snow Leopard as my platform of choice for work and special projects, while booting into Windows for gaming (PC gamer).
I had an Applecare representative on the phone as I installed the operating system and the process appeared to resolve quite successfully.
I used the Apple Bootcamp Utility to establish a partition size of 300 GB, and then I placed the Windows 7 32 bit full installation DVD into the drive and proceeded with the installation. I ensured that the Bootcamp partition formatted thoroughly (NTFS) and I set Windows to download all the necessary updates automatically via Windows Update.
I ensured that the upgraded GPU drivers were included during the installation (to avoid the black screen issue), as well as installing the Snow Leopard disk drivers, the iMac 27"-specific drivers and new Bootcamp 3.1 update for Windows. The partition worked fine and appeared to have been configured successfully after approximately 2 days of booting.
Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and Sophos Enterprise AV. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly. Sometimes, when I would boot, I would simply reach a black screen with a white, flashing cursor. Other occasions I would load to a black screen, which contained a disk read error (Disk can not be found) and a request to CTRLALTDEL. Yet other times, the computer would simply lock up on the gray, Option bootdisk selection screen. In each of the aforementioned circumstances, the computer would seem permanently stuck, since the computer would not proceed to any operating system, regardless of time allotted (up to 20 minutes provided). On occasion, Windows would boot normally with no problems whatsoever.
During each of the inexplicable lock ups, I would initiate a hard reboot, and boot off of the Windows 7 HP 32 bit DVD. Often, the DVD would perform a boot check of the operating system. On each of the occasions, the operating system check would list no errors. Because I was using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I assumed that perhaps the issue remained with an inability to strike CTRLALTDEL and quickly purchased a USB keyboard. While I no longer receive the "Can not find disk" errors that request CTRLALTDEL, I still rarely get the black screen with the flashing cursor and I routinely receive the gray, OS option screen.
I believed that perhaps booting with an external drive or jump drive attached might be causing the problem but upon removing all of said drives, the boot malfunctions persist. I used the Snow Leopard Disk Utilities to scan the hard drive and it detected no problems. I also utilized Windows hard drive utility to check for bad sectors. After 2 hours of scanning, no bad sectors or hard drive problems were detected. I finally rebooted the system in ChkDsk and upon 1 hour of scanning, ChkDsk confirmed no problems, bad sectors or issues with the hard drive. Because all three utilities appear to be unanimous, operating from two distinct operating systems, I'm inclined to believe the consensus and dismiss the possibility of a defective hard drive.
While I can always eventually reboot into Windows, I am concerned that the large number of "hard reboots" - reboots done using the power button, which account for 5-6 on bad days, will eventually lead to a diminished lifespan for my iMac's motherboard or power supply. I want to curtail these pointless restarts. Booting with the Windows 7 DVD in the hard drive, yields a clean boot into Windows, however, this is very inconvenient and, moreso, would lead to wear and tear on the DVD that I would rather avoid (as well as not resolving the problems inherent in my Windows boot partition). After running the Windows 7 boot utility, over a dozen times, and receiving no errors at all, I'm at a loss for what the problem can be.
My biggest problem, currently, is to avoid the wave of hard reboots. This most naturally occurs due to the computer locking up on the gray OS option screen. I'll select Windows and the hard drive will not spin up. I was advised to check my boot ini or use utitilities that provided a hard-mapped boot table for the Windows partition but I'm wary of corrupting or damaging my Windows installation.
Has anyone experienced these problems with their Macs, 27" or otherwise? And can anyone help me resolve this problem before substantial wear and tear through constant rebooting results? Thank you for any input and thank you for your time.

Well, you're not alone. Many other users are having the same problem, and it appears that Apple is ignoring the problem. I bought my iMac 27" in June 2010 and installed Bootcamp 3.1 running Windows 7. About every other reboot the gray screen will freeze during bootup and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I get the Disk Read Failure. It is very, very frustrating. The only reason I bought the iMac 27" is that I like the look of it and the big screen; I have no desire to switch to a Mac, as I have too much money invested in Windows development software. I've installed multiple dual-boot systems in other non-Mac systems and never had any problems. I hope Apple stops ignoring the problem and comes out with a fix real soon.

Try authorize this computer in the store menu in Itunes.  This worked for me. It seems that this is an account problem on iTunes.

  • New problem. I can not burn a playlist to disk.

New problem. I can not burn a playlist to disk. The 'checking playlist' now takes about one second, looks very much like a malfunction here. Seems to initialize the disk - them moves straight into 'burning/finalizing disk' which also takes about one second. Then 'burning - finishing disk takes a little longer -
Error reading is "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disk drive didn't respond properly an can't recover.'
This happend once before a while back and I thought it was 'too skinny disks'. Using 'printable disks; seemed to fix the problem - until now.

DVD's can be burned from DVD Pro.
Music cd's and dvd's can be played.
Just can't burn the itunes playlist.

  • New Problem: some areas of video "jitter" now

    OK..New Problem. Reinstalled FCE4.
Have done 3 segments (before, I had the one video that pixelated for the last 10 minutes or so)...so I broke it down and now have 3 segments, EACH SEGMENT PREVIEWS FINE! AND...I've burned each segment successfully onto a Blu-ray (rewritable now!).  Just put the 3 segments together, figuring all would be fine...NOT!   There are "jittery" parts here and there towards the end...not all, just bits here and there. I can't figure out why...since each part rendered and burned and looked fine....putting them together and the project is now no good.
Before the project (full project) was fine in FCE4 but seemed to have problems when it was burned (Toast 10).  Now, the project itself is corrupt.
    Any clues?
