New problems repairing permissions

I have done a fresh install of Leopard using the "Erase and Install" method. Most of the other problems I was having before are now gone. Except for one.
I'm now getting the following problems while doing a Permission Repair:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writecon fig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I know that the last one was common, but what about these new issues?
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I understand the very bottom error has been discussed before. But I can't find threads showing that all of these errors are being experienced now.
Have you seen all of these errors before? I'm sorry if I'm being redundant. I'm just trying to ease my mind.
Thanks again,

  • Problems repairing permissions on leopard

every time I try to repair permissions from disk utility I receive the following message: "The underlying task reported failure on exit". Can anyone tell me how I can get around this issue??? One interesting thing is that it sometimes gets to repair some permissions before displaying the error, while sometimes it just fails before repairing anything.. Have tried this from the mac os x disc with the same results. People help!!!!

I expect you've found the 10 minute Repair problem with DU? I think this is just another aspect of that, which should be fixed with 10.5.1, due out in a couple of weeks. Hang in there. In the mean time, download Onyx, and use it to repair permissions. I wouldn't get too jacked over this.

I am getting the following report from the 'Disk Utility', what gives? I have not modified any of these files but it looks serious because these are system related files. I have tried a number of times to repair permissions but the same messages appear.

These are simply informational alerts. You can ignore them, there is nothing wrong. You might try downloading the 109 MB 10.5.1 updater and reapplying. This has repaired the occurrences for many.

  • New problem with permissions with 10.5.1

I did an upgrade installation of Leopard from Tiger and I used to get the error:
"System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAge nt" has been modified and will not be repaired.
which i know can be ignored. But after installing the 10.5.1 update this is what shows up when I try to repair disk permissions:
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Anyone know if I should be worried about this? or if there's a way to fix things?

  • Repairing Permissions Problem

I've never had a problem repairing permissions until yesterday. While using Disc Utility it kept hanging at a particular point and the following message came up:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I quit and then this message came up:
"Operations still in progress. Disk Utility still has some operations in progress. Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational. Are you sure you want to quit?"
I had no choice but to quit. Tried rebooting, having no app's running, all to no avail.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Re your comment on the bottom of your post. Do these (my) models have a history of developing hard drive problems? Do you know of the recommended fix for this?
My hard drive has a problem with its hard drive found by both norton system works and Disk first aid and list as 'unable to repair this problem"
    Many thanks Steve

  • New Mac Mini and Repairing Permissions

I've been having trouble with my Mail program and thought I would repair permissions to see if that would help. I ran disk utility from my internal hard drive and ran repair permissions. Apparently it found several permissions to repair, so I thought I would run repair permissions again and the same list appeared. Running a third time and the same list appeared again.Do these permissions ever get repaired? What do I do from here? Should I repair permissions after booting up off of my original system disk? This Mini is only a couple of weeks old and I'm already having problems with Mail and repairing permissions.
    rskover

Thank you Tim but the computer is packed back waiting for TNT to take it back to Apple. I don't have time to play with permissions, the permissions are OK in the old computer.
This is what may have been your problem. The permissions on your old computer may not have matched the new computer. I think you gave up before the penny dropped.
They sell the computers very expensive and I think they would have to improve quality.
I am unsure how that can be one of your gripes as when the cube came out it was way overpriced in comparison to their other desktops. That did not stop your or I getting one then.
Your issue was a software problem not a hardware problem so no matter what kind of mac you had it would have needed troubleshooting.
The quality of the new mac mini far exceeds that of the cube. Try playing 1080P high definition media on your cube, or even 480P for that matter. Try outputting 5.1 surround sound from your cube without the addition of a firewire audio interface.
I know how frustrating it can be when something just does not seem to work. I have encountered this a few times in my work. However sometimes I just have leave it come back with fresh eyes and try other approaches and I succeed.
What you need to appreciate installing an upgrade should be planned for any eventuality. In business upgrades are scheduled to have the minimum impact on the workplace. That being said I have worked 48 hrs solid over a weekend getting systems up for a monday morning. They are not always straightforward.

  • Error message: There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?

I have been using iPhoto for years.  Today when I tried to upload pictures from camera, I received the above error message.  I select "Repair", enter my password, and then a message "iPhoto was unable to repair permissions for the library" appears. I select "Quit" and it closes iPhoto.  Quit is the only option.  What has happened?  I have tried to access the photos via other avenues such as uploading to gmail, and the photos load fine.  I have about 28,000 photos.
I do not know what version of iPhoto I am using as I am unable to access the software.  I have a iMac OS X (10.7.5).  What should I do?

Select the iPhoto application in the Applications folder and type Command+i to bring up its Info Window. There will tell the version number. If it's iPhoto 9 or later apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Disk Utility and repair permissions problem after upgrade 10.5.1

*Problem with Disk Utility* - +repair permissions don't work anymore+
After upgrading to OS X 10.5.1 tried to correct permissions with Disk utility. But I'm not able to repair permissions, because I get this message every time "fault: The underlying task reported a fault at concluding." and permissions repair stops. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any idea how to get this working again?

Will try installing OS X 10.5.1 again from the downkoad that you recommended. Won't be able to do this untill after the New Year but I'll let you know if this helped. I had another problem after he 10.5.1 upgrade and that was that the Security update 2007-009 also refused to install. Could this be related too the problems with Disk utility and the permissions problems.

  • Cannot repair permissions on new MBP

I migrated from my older MBP to the new 15 inch 2.93 and I just can't seem to repair these permission issues. Not sure if I am taking a performance hit or not but it is bugging me and can't figure a way to repair them short of a complete reload. It seems most of the issues are from I life 08 to the new I life 09. Any advice here would be great

I'm still not happy with it. I just sold my MacPro and old 2.4 2006 version to go laptop only and i put a lot of money in this box with 2 SSD drives and 8gbs of ram tomorrow so this still bugs me to no end. I just may reload everything from scratch and migrate from a backup in manual mode. Most of the issues it seem are I life no less. The issue comes down to migrating and I tried with CCC but I copied my preferences and that may have been the issue. I eliminated all Ilife stuff but still got there permission issues and loading the Ilife after the fact did NOT clean it up. I can't find a program to change or delete this stuff either. Here I just did it again and after loading Itunes update today still no help in getting rid of there permissions problems. Not sure .7 update will do anything

  • Repair permissions keeps finding problems

    2007 MacBook 2.16
    OS 10.6.8
    New Hard drive
Just replaced my hard drive b/c my old one was having serious problems (spinning beachball with every move or click) and it was failing SMART.  My Admin user on the failing HD worked fine, but my primary user account was unusable.
After swapping HDs, I installed a fresh copy of 10.6 then moved my user and applications from the failing drive to my new drive.  All is working much better but there still seem to be some quirks, so I thought I'd repair permissions as a first step.  Seemed like a reasonable thing to do given the problems I was experiencing.  But when I run it, I keep getting something like 18 or 20 problems that are, in theory, "repaired."  I've copied and pasted into TextEdit to look through for duplicate issues (i.e. repair permissions finding and repairing the same mistake each time) and for a while found no duplicate entries.  Now it's finding the same issues each pass.
I've run repair permissions at least 10 times now, probably closer to 20, with issues found each time.  Is this normal, and should I ever hope to see the issues repaired with only one or two warnings or issues?  It used to have to modify a few permissions just to run so it would never run without at least one or two problems, but I never get to that stage.
Again, what might be going on here, and can/should I at some point give up and hope all is well?
    Thanks!

For a little more on this:
    I've read this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448
Seems like I may now be getting similar permissions problems that can perhaps be ignored, but mine are all related to System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement.  My specific permissions issues aren't in the list in this link.
    Here's an example:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreen.app/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/MainMenu.nib", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreen.app/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/MainMenu.nib".
I also am getting one SUID warning related to System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ each time I run it.
As I said above, it now seems to be finding the same permissions problems each pass.
    Thanks again!

  • MacBook Pro Hard Drive Repair/Permissions Problems

My MacBook Pro (2.2GHz) wouldn't start. I was getting the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel that never stops. Tried zapping the PRAM. Tried holding down the shift key. No luck.
So I finally booted from the Leopard Install CD. No problem. Figured I'd use the Disk Utility to repair the disk. I get the following two problems every time:
    REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS:
    Repairing Permissions for "GROOVY"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    REPAIR DISK:
    Checking Catalog File
incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub
(it should be 16 instead of 17)
Every time I re-launch the computer, using the Leopard CD, I get the same two problems. Can't repair permissions at all. And I get the same "incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub" error when trying to Repair Disk. Even though Disk Utility appeared to repair that problem (and then recheck it) the last time.
Anyway I was able to use Firewire Target Disk Mode to copy all my files to my PowerMac G4. While I was connected I also used DiskWarrior. Seemed to repair the disk with no problems.
So at this point I've pretty much resigned myself to doing an Archive and Install. Unfortunately I've tried it twice and I keep getting this:
    INSTALL FAILED
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
The installer could not install some files in "/Volumes/GROOVY". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Click restart to restart your computer and try again.
Now I'm going to try wiping the disk and doing a fresh install. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to call Apple. Anybody else having similar problems?
    Thanks,
    LT

As I understand it, you can't fix a failing SMART status. Believe me I tried on my iBook! I was originally under the impression that DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro could fix anything, but I now understand that they and Disk Utility can only repair the directory. As it was explained to me, SMART was set up to give warning of hard drive failure so that you could rescue your data before the hard drive dies altogether. You can disable it I think, but that's like putting black tape over the warning light in your car that lights up if you are running out of oil--possible to do, but not a good idea.
So if your SMART status is failing, then the only cure is to replace the hard drive. The hard drive can work for a while, but it's on its way out.
Here's a little background information on SMART status:

And I hope this was just a rhetorical question!

    I've fixed the problem - I think.
I forgot I had the program "Little Snitch" installed on my computer. So I went into it and saw that it was blocking most of my connections for all the programs I use on a daily basis. Once I lifted the RULE to those certain programs - BAM - everything came back to life in an instant!

  • After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this?

After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this? I can see the library icon on my external drive, but it doesn't show as a library in iPhoto. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. When I choose it from alternate menu, doesn't open. Where do I get help?

    Peter
Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
