New Processor

Hey everyone, I have a quick question for you
These are my specs: (Just the basics)
iMac Core2Duo 24inch
Processor : 2.16ghz
Videocard : Nvidia 7300GT
I'm wondering whether i can upgrade this processor to a faster core2duo or even one of the nice new intel QX6800 quad cores when they ship or the Quad core Xeons that ship in the mac pro. I'm can't find too many details on the motherboard of this particular imac and no one at the apples shops seem to know the answer. I assume it shouldn't be a problem to replace the current core2duo processor with a faster one but im interested in replacing the current processor with the newer quad cores. Any idea if this can be done?
Thanks
Vince

They are not soldered on the 24" model, but replacing the processor would be limited to one with the same pin-out as the current one plus paying a cost that would be more than it would be worth to try.

  • IMac G4 New Processor

hey everybody. I was wondering if anyone could help me with something. I have an iMac g4 snowball. It has a
700 MH Processor.I would like to put a newer processor in it. It is the best computer I have ever used as far as architecture.
My own opinion of course and I don't expect others to agree, but for those of you who like to mess around with computers,
I'd like some help to make it better. So, is this possible?

As the dremel junkie mod is my mod, I can assure you that it is not that difficult, nor that expensive.  In fact, depending on your goals, it may be the cheapest option for upgrading available.  I would not bother upgrading to the 800mhz mobo (there will be no discernible difference) nor trying to track down the Daystar CPU or purchasing a working 1.25Ghz PPC G4.  The reason is that the problem is the Power PC.  It is no longer supported, not even by apple.  No new software is written for it, including browsers.  Web video formats and plugins are not optimized for it, if they even work at all.  This will only continue to get worse.
I know this may seem daunting, but for less than $20 in materials, you can turn the video cable that plugs into the iMacs motherboard into a DVI cable.  No soldering required.  I have a very detailed step by step for the 17" version (but I have the pin out for the 15" and can talk you through it).  It can be done in less than an hour and involves pushing 14 pins onto a dvi connector, connecting 3 wires and a resistor, then using 4 or 5 alligator wires to hook it to a molex connector and plug that in somewhere (even a molex to AC wall plug adapter).  The reason it's so easy is that apple has already put a DVI cable through the neck (it uses TMDS, the same signaling) you just have to put the pins in the ight place of a dvi connector and add power.
The rest is up to you as to what to upgrade it to.  Some options include:
    1) Connect the DVI to the back so that it can hook up to an external computer.  I use a 20" iMac G4 (modded) as a monitor for a Mac mini.  I added a USB optial drive to replace the one missing from the 2011 mini.  I love this setup.
    2)  Use this as a wired or wireless (with a wireless DVI USB dongle) second monitor for a laptop.  Or put an apple tv in the base and use it as an airplay receiver.
    3) Add a small motherboard as I have done to make it an all-in-one, most expensive, but depends on what you choose.  This will have to be a hackintosh if you want Mac OSX, but you are free to run any OS you want.  Run Windows, Linux, or even HTPC software like Boxee or XBMC.
I began this project because I like you, love this design and wanted to keep using it despite the outdated computer inside.  Do not waste money on minor incremental upgrades to obsolete architecture.  Instead make this DVI compatible so that you can use its ergonomic design with any computer (inside or outside) you see fit.  I've worked hard to make this as simple as possible and if you can assemble a computer from off the shelf components and strip and connect speaker wire to a home stereo system then you can do this.  Hope this helps. • Adding a new processor + RAM to a Sun Fire X2270

    Hi,
    I have a Sun Fire X2270 with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5504 @ 2.00GHz CPU and 8 GB RAM from factory.
The server has 2 processors sockets, I want to add another new processor (before it gets older).
Can I just buy a new processor from Internet? I called Oracle but I think they are not interested in selling and sending just one processor.
According to the tech specs of the server hardware I have a couple of Intel processors options apart of the one that came preinstalled, the same Intel Xeon 5500 series.
This is the one I want:
    Intel® Xeon® Processor L5520 (8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel® QPI)
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=40201
Can I just buy it and plug it in? no special version from Sun/Oracle? isn't the same exact model of the one that already has, but the same Intel series, is this possible to have different processors models? this one has a couple of more features and it is faster.
Of course I also will buy more RAM, what do you say about this one:
    Kingston KTS-SF313/8G 8GB 1333MHz Reg ECC Module

  • New hard drive/new processor

i recently upgraded to a new processor/hard drive, my old hard drive is still in my computer as local drive F, i went there to move my ipod software onto the new hard drive, and it didnt work, so i reinstalled the software onto the new hard drive, now i cant get my library info from the old drive to the new, if i open itunes from the old drive, it appears empty! i still have all the info on my ipod, if i plug in the ipod will it be wiped clean? is there a way to transfer the info from the ipod to the computer, i have 1300 songs and many photos, i dont want to have to import all that again

"if i plug in the ipod will it be wiped clean?"
If you let the iPod sync to a blank iTunes -- YES!
Based on your psot, your music and photo data files are still on the HD, just not within iTunes as References. You do have some options:
1 - Try to recover your original Library by moving the music folders and database file back to their original location (now on the new C: drive) - then move them to whatever location you want (if desired)
2 - Move all the music files to their final location, then Rebuild the Library within iTunes by: File=>Add Folder
3 - Recover the music from the iPod using any one of several methods (but as long as you have the files on the PC already, why?)
Option 1 will retain your Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played and Date Added attributes as well as your Playlists.
Option 2 will lose the above music metadata.
Option 3 can do either, depending on the method selected.

i was downloading the new processor.sys file for windows xp and it failed on the install.  in the ng i didnt see anyone post any troubles installing it, most likely to early.  has anyone else have this problem occur?  tia

It got me too.It did work when I installed it manually.
Try getting it form the MS Manual Updater It should be under (Find driver updates for hardware devices)then(other hardware)then(Manufacturer name:microsft corporation).Don't try to save it to your dektop. For some reason it won't do it.Save it to C: or anywhere but the desktop.

  • Power mac G5 dual 2.3 - less than 3 yrs old - needs new processor?

I have a PM G5 Dual 2.3 that was purchased in April 06.
It was working perfectly, as it always had on Friday Jan 23 at 12 pm. I went out to lunch and came back an hour later and it was off and could not be restarted by ANY and ALL means.
I took it to the local Apple store and the diagnosis was that it needs a new processor. I have had Apples for 20 years and they have all lasted until a newer model was desired - not needed. This computer is barely over 2 1/2 yrs old.
Does anyone know of anything else it could be? I do not want to spend 1200.00 on a new processor that is already archaic and not an intel.
Also, I did not have the 3 year AppleCare on it (unfortunately) so it's all on me to pay.
Has anyone had any success negotiating with Apple for a discounted repair?
    Thanks!

    Hi LG111-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Total bummer. Without AppleCare the cost of repair has been known to be quite high.
You could just run the machine on one processor.
As far as negotiating with Apple, you can always try, however its been out of warranty for quite a long time.
    Luck-

  • New Processor Or More RAM?

    Hi,
I just wanted to know whether to buy a new processor or some more RAM. I am pretty sure more RAM won't help, seeing as I only have a 400mhz processor. Its just my brother wants to play runescape on it and it won't take it, it's too laggy.
    -Ollie

One trick you may try is to go to the top menu bar in your desktop and pull down: GO > Go to Folder... > and type in /var/vm/. This will take you to a directory and if you see several files with names like swapfile0, swapfile1, etc. , then you need more ram. Judging from your profile, it probably does need max ram as you're talking about running a game. Don't concern yourself too much with clock speed as the ram is of greater impact, in this particular case.
    Good luck

  • Intel's New Processor

i just read on intel's web page that they came up with a new core 2 duo for notebooks. i was just wondering if anyone know whether apple is gonna use this new processor for their MacBook Pro and if so when will the new MacBook Pro be ready?thanks!

I have not heard anything - I can't see how
speculating can be a violation of the forum, because
daily many people here are speculating whether or not
Apple will correct some of the issues people are
having. It is my understanding of the terms of use

  • New processors in June?

I'm about to buy a new MacBook Pro and seem to recall something about Intel releasing a new Centrino in June, or something like that. Does this mean there is a new processor on the way for Macs in June? I'd hate to buy it now and have such a big upgrade happen a few months later.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Just found this on MacRumors. If Apple doesn't even have the current revision in their computers I can't see this new one getting in there any time soon. Anyway, here it is:
Digitimes reports that Intel is poised to launch the Montevina platform at Computex Taipei 2008, which takes place from June 3-7, 2008.
Montevina is the next revision to Intel's mobile platform and will carry the consumer brand "Centrino 2" to distiguish it from the current "Centrino" brand which has encompassed a number of revisions (Carmel, Sonoma, Napa and Santa Rosa).
Six new 45nm notebook CPUs accompanying the release will feature a 1066MHz Front Side Bus with clock speeds ranging from 2.26-3.06GHz. The recently released Penryn processors range from 2.1 to 2.8GHz and offer a 800MHz Front Side Bus. The Penryn processors have not yet been incorporated into Apple's notebook line, despite persistent rumors of an imminent release.
Meanwhile, Digitimes also notes that Intel is planning on releasing 45-nm processors similar to the MacBook Air's custom processor in the 3rd quarter of this year.

  • New Processor Working?

I have a Dual Processor and just switched out a faulty processor. I do not know if the new processor is refurbished. How can I tell if it is even working? I do not think it is working because when I make a movie on iMovie, it still does not work right. Before my processor died, i Movie worked well. I tried iMovie with one processor, but it would not work right. This is why I question if the new one is working right. Is there a way to tell on my end?

Okay, my question is back open, thank you.
My System profiler does say that each CPU is version 2.2.
I have the older 1.8 Dual processor. It is about 4 1/2 years old.
I will have to check iStat to see if both are working. This is what I was really trying to find out.
I did not put the processor in. It was done at a local Apple Seller (not an Apple Store). They did not run a thermal calibration at first. I had to bring it back in because the fans kept running. They did it, and now the fans hardly run.
I do not recall if CPU A or B was running hotter. I will check when I get home.
I raised my original question instead of just bringing it back in again because I have lost confidence in them. First, it took two weeks for them to diagnose the problem. Then, the tech did not know he was supposed to run a thermal callibration when they did put in the new processor.

  • New processor?(upgrade?)

    this may sound dumb.
When Apple does indeed switch to Intel couldnt we just buy a new processor?
then instead of being left behind or slowed down we could upgrade?

    This is totally incorrect
The processor is not the only thing within a computer that makes it work. There is a chipset of multiple components and lots of traces built into the 'motherboard' that carry out the data/power/error checking.
The PowerPC 970/G5 Architecture uses HyperTransport which uses very few intercommunication wires and a south bridge chip to handle I/O.
The current, and near future Intel line of processors does not use Hyper Transport, and it also requires a north bridge chip to handle processor to memory, and processor to south bridge communication.
Not to mention all new, and totally different traces, and most likely as well different memory. Unless it changed recently IA32/x86-64 architectures use parity memory and Mac architectures use non-parity so all the memory is incompatible/wrong speed.
The only things really in your system built today that could theoretically work in the future would be teh SATA drive, and the Airport Extreme card if you have one. Most everything else would be different completely.
There is no way to make that type of an architecture shift 'upgradable' short of 'rip and replace'

  • New Processor on K8N Neo2 Platinum Advice

Following on from getting my system stable after installing more Ram (thanks syar2003 and all who offered advice ) I'm now on the lookout for a new processor to round out my latest upgrades.
Currently I have what is listed in my signature. I was looking at the AMD64 FX-57 chips but at over £500 they are far too expensive. I was then looking at the single core AMD 4000+ at about £120 or there's AMD64 X2 4800's going for a little over £200. I predominately do gaming on my machine but I do other stuff at the same time, often downloading large files, running winamp/irc/ventrillo etc.
Should I just go for the AMD64 X2 4800 and make it the end chip for my current board ? I don't really want to upgrade to SLI or AM2 just yet as I fell there is much life left in this board.

Sounds good to me! AM2 is just a "stop-gap" solution for now, IMHO.
I'd still be using my Neo2 Plat as my primary board if it weren't for the AGP "dead-end".
My Neo2 was much easier to OC than my Neo4 Plat. Although, I finally ended up with simliar results on both. It was a bit harder to get there with the Neo4.

  • In need of a new processor

I'll be the first to admit I don't know a ton about computers so I'm in need of some help. I've managed to establish that my processor (Asus P5N-E SLI) is capable of going from it's current duel core set up to a new quad core processor. I'm however, unsure of what processor I should get to achieve the most bang for my buck and have it be compatible with my motherboard. Any suggestions would be awesome!

  • New Processor in MacBook Pro

What is the difference between the processor that comes in the new MacBook Pro (2.66....) and the procssor in my 2008 Macbook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)?

In reply to rkaufmann87, the i7 processor in the Macbook pro is a duo core process with hyper threading, not a quad core i7 like you find in the desktop mac.
    Please see here:
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=43560
The Macbook pro i7 is still very fast compared to the old Duo core. Mainly due to Hyper threading, Turbo boost and onboard memory control. There are lots of comparisons between the two on the web as well.
However, there is only a small amount of performance difference between the i5 and i7 in the macbook pro range, so you pay for which one suits you best.
May I suggest that you only upgrade to 6Gb of RAM first and see it that is sufficient for you need. As there are hardly any price difference if you but 1 or 2 4Gb stick. You can always buy another stick later on for the same or cheaper price if you needed.
The money saved can go towards a SSD hard drive. you will see much more improvement when you pair up a 6Gb RAM with SSD hard drive than 8Gb memory with the fastest mechanical hard drive you can buy.
Also if you do run out of memory with 6Gb system, you will not notice any performance drop if you have a SSD because the hard driver act like addition RAM in that situation. So if you have SSD the read and write speed can be unto 100 times faster the any mechanical hard drive.
Just some suggestions for you to think over.
P.S. +1 to Apple Care for a piece of mind.

  • Old Board, New Processor, New Problem

Ok, so I have been thinking about upgrading to an i7 3770k because my i5 is just so slow when recording game footage, editing videos, and live streaming at high resolutions. I have an MSI P67A-GD55 B3 which is compatible with the Ivy Bridge processors if you update the BIOS. Atleast it says that it is on the CPU support page for my board.
So, today I go buy the processor and I go through the process of updating the BIOS to version 4.2 while my Sandy Bridge is still installed. Everything appears to go smoothly. I get no error that the update has failled or anything. It goes into the boot loop where it gets to the board title screen and restarts. I figure this is because the processor is not installed. I go to instal the processor and now I am having this problem where my computer will only start the fans, but nothing else. All the fans and LEDs start, then turn off. Start, then turn off. There is no display, no POST, no nothing. Just fans and LEDs. I have no idea what could be wrong? I tried putting the Ivy Bridge processor I bought today in, but nothing else is happening. Is this related to the BIOS possibly failing to update, or could this be another problem? I just hope I do not have to buy a new board. If I have to, then I have to, but hoping i wont.
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
EDIT: I just want to add that I have pulled the CMOS battery for a few minutes and switched the jumper. Neither of those things made a difference.

It's a little late now, but an upgrade to a Sandy 2700k most likely would have been the better option and keeping with the Sandy BIOS's.
I take it this was flashed in Windows mode rather than the DOS as outlined on page 15 of the SOP?
Only way to save the board now is likely taking it to a pc shop that has an SPI flash programming tool to restore the BIOS for you. Other option is to send the board in to MSI for service.
Yea, I was afraid of this . I will probably just purchase a Z77 motherboard. I had never updated BIOS before. I didn't know it was such a risky thing to do. I installed 4.2 BIOS downloaded onto a USB drive. Everything seemed to complete just fine, until it wouldn't book back up.
