New Prpblem with Repairing disk

When one of my apps ( from an external HD ) wouldn't open, I ran Disc Utilty on this HD and got the following message:
*Repairing disk failed with error Could not unmount disk*
Can someone explain what this means, and suggest a course of action to remedy this ? Yesterday, I installed a new part to this programme, though I ran Disc Utilty afterwards and everything was OK, and i had the programme up and running without any problems.
Thanks, SeaDream

You were booted from the HD and repairing the external? Usually, when I get that message, I just try again and it unmounts. DU can't do repairs without the disc being unmounted. That's why the Repair button on the drive you're booted from will be dimmed and unavailable. Very crude medical analogy: like disconnecting your heart and trying to work on it without having another heart in its place to keep you alive.

  • Warning sign with Repair Disk Permission" Warning: SUID file..."

When I run Repair disk permission from Disk Utility I get these messages with warning. Why do I get them, and how do I fix them?
    1. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    2. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

    how do I fix them?
You don't - they are harmless.
    Why do I get them
Apple has this to say about that:

You did the right thing by asking first - good luck with Snow Leopard.

  • Problems with Repair Disk Permissions

I am running Mavericks 10.9.5 on a new (2013) Mac Pro.  When I run disk permissions I get a LONG list of repaired files and then the message that the process is complete.  But if I then run the repair routine again I get ANOTHER equally long list of DIFFERENT permissions that are supposedly being repaired.  This goes on ad infinitum.  If I run Repair Disk Permissions on my other computers multiple times no additional permissions show up after running the program once.  Any idea why this might be occurring?

You can safely  ignore those messages.

  • How can I "repair disk" with Repair disk grayed out?

My external back-up has been complaining of late, Time Machine can no longer access it, and now, after trying Verify Disk, it stopped that process and told me to use Repair Disk.
Repair Disk is grayed out. But my WD unit isn't even six months old.
    Where do I turn?

I found a Grab of part of the response from Verify Disk.
If that's impossible to read, (1) blame Apple and (2) let me know -- I'll punch it up.

  • I have new hard drive in macbook pro(08) and have SATA cable with external power source to old hard drive (10.5.8)via. USB port and newer drive(10.6.8) will not recognize older drive..Do I need to partition newer drive with older disk to recover data?

I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8  connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:

They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction  and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
    I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The  only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
Disk Warrior can be found at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the  damage has already been done.
    Let us know what happens.

  • How to migrate from my old MacBook Pro to a new one with less disk space and an external hard drive?

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and an external hard drive.
Yet I have problems migrating data from my old MacBook Pro (more internal disk space with around 500 GB data) to my new one (internal disk space less than 500 GB).
I have connected all 3 devices but it seems the Migration Assistant does not have an option for us to select to migrate to an external hard drive.
Any other way to do it?
    Kindly help me.  Thanks.

Are using Disk First Aid via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc and not via Disk Utility from your hard drive boot volume?
You cannot do so if the latter.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that DFA repair cannot successfully repair which means the problem is significant, then you need a more substantial repair utility such as Disk Warrior but although DW has been known to work miracles where others have failed, there is no guarantee with DW.

  • Mac repair disks.

Is there a way to make repair disks for 10.4.8 or 10.4.11?
And I don't with apple that much but will they provide you with repair disks for you pc or do you have to buy install disks?

To get a system on a computer you either have to clone it on, or you have to install it.  Cloning places an exact copy of what is on a drive onto another drive, usually wiping the first drive in the process.  Installing offers the option of placing a fresh copy of the system files on top of the other files already on the drive.  The only thing that will install is an installer disc.  So, let's say you are in the process of using a computer and you need a new system.  With discs you can install a new system on top of existing files.  With cloning you either clone a bare system you have on hand and then re-install the data files and software, or you make sure you are on top of regularly backup cloning of the whole computer and should something happen you clone your backup but losing anything you may have done since the last backup.
If things aren't so dire as to require a system installation, there are a number of utilities you can use to try to recover from system damage, to varying extents.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Unable to verify and repair disk, with my new 10.5

I'm trying to work out some problems on my older G4 desktop (with lamp bass). I upgraded recently from 10.3 to 10.5 (bought new box with the 10.5 disk). I have 750 dramm.
I wish to verify and repair the disk. I can't figure out h ow with the new 10.5 disk I have.
In the past, I would boot up my computers with the 10.3 and 10.4 disks (I've had both) with "C" key down, and then I could use the utility.
That does not work with this new Leopard disk. Won't boot up with the "C" (or the "option" key for that matter).
That normal? And how do I repair disk for the install disk?
    thx..
    Jon

    Jon,
The Leopard disk works (or is supposed to work) just like previous versions of OS X. In other words, booting the G4 while holding down the "C" key should boot the machine to the installer.
A couple of things might get in the way of this happening, though. First, let's establish that your G4 meets the minimum requirements for Leopard. For a G4, the important item would be at least an 867 MHz processor (if I'm not mistaken). Are we still "go?"
Also, let's eliminate the "duh!!!" possibility of a third-party or wireless keyboard, which may not be supported by the startup manager.
If you meet the minimum requirements, and you're using a standard, wired USB keyboard, your PRAM may be causing an issue. This happens, sometimes. To clear this up, first flush out the PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R at startup, and continue to hold it until you hear a total of four startup chimes. When you hear the fourth, immediately switch to holding the "C" key (with the Leopard disk inserted, of course).
If this doesn't get you booted to the installer, there may be something wrong with the installer disk.

  • HT3275 I continue to get the following error message: Unable to complete back up.an error occurred while creating backup folder. It's a brand new drive. When I attempt to repair it using disk utility I get:unable to repair disk cannot unmounted

I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hope

I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?
