New Purchase advice, including Bootcamp, Dual Screen, Router

I would like an apple (with Windows dual boot)  as everything else we have is apple (I have a mac air, ipad, iphones etc) but need to have two screens and am not sure if Apple does that ?   i.e can an apple have two screens so I can work remotely with the same extended view that I have in my office? (Office PCs are Dual Screen Windows 7). What would you recommend?
Also, should we upgrade our router ?  I read somewhere that they get better every year – with all the apple devices about the house we are finding that one of us gets booted off the network from time to time and that service slows. We also have a problem getting my Airbook to print wirelessly.   If we should get a new one what should we buy?

Your modem and ISP have to deliver a good strong signal of course for any router to do its job. That being said, and say you have 30Mb service a new router makes sense (I went through a couple). N600 or above (I get 20Mb using Speedtest on iPod) or better. .
Netgear has N600 and N900. WD has a new N900 that is great for today with built in storage (1-2TB) and large cache buffer and small processor.
I have not used screen sharing or Windows Remote Desktop but those are there - dual screen sounds more like just having an external monitor directly connected locally - MBA with 27" display for instance. Or be on one mac and share the screen on your local home LAN.
I recommend Netgear but as to Airbook? and wireless printing... might be another thread - this area is for getting Windows installed on Macs,, aka "Boot Camp" partition tool and drivers.
Check MacBook Pro/Air forums for how those users setup and configure.

  • Linksys WRT1900AC Dual Band Router Issue

    Hi We have recently Purchased
8 Linksys WRT1900AC Dual Band Router. And we are trying to connect our External Hard Drive which is
(Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100) non of them are recognizing in USB 3 or USB 2 Yes we have also tried to format the drives in NTFS still no luck. I am really surprise that External 4TB HD not working with this Such Hi-Fi Router. I am hoping it should really don't want to return these router.
Please Confirm if this router support the Following Newest USB 3 External Hard Drives. I have tried everything but its not working.
1 - Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive STDR2000100 B
2 - Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100
    Thanks

Have only 1 drive connected to the USB port. Restart the router and then map the drive. See if that works. The issue that I am having is that when I have only one drive (NTSF) connected to my WRT1900AC Router I can see it, no problem. The problem ocurrs when I install the second drive (FAT32) then it locks both drives and I can not map any of the drives either on mac or windows. I do see both drives on the Linksys Smart wi-fi browser (192.182.1.1) and tells me that both are connected, but thats about it. I am going to format both as NTSF and see if that solves the problem.

  • I have an older IPOD that I'm having trouble getting new purchases on to my IPOD. I use to have a source list on the left hand side of screen where I dragged my purchases to and they downloaded.  Can't find place to check manual vs. auto sync.

I have an older IPOD classic that I'm having trouble getting new purchases from library to IPOD. I use to have a IPOD icon in the source list on the left side of the screen. Now that is all gone. My purchases are coming up as recently purchased but can't figure out how to get them transferred to IPOD.  I also can't find how to confirm setting is for manual not auto sync as the first computer I had blew up and am now using a different one. I haven't had any of these problems prior to the updates.

    G'day Mate,
As an avid flight simmer I bought a new soundcard my previous was
an audigy 2 platinum ex with an external module I really liked but somehow all of a sudden I was getting a screech when using FS9 sor I opted to change to the present. Well stone the crows my soundcard was auto updated with new drivers and well you guessed it the soundcard did not show in the sound video controllers window No I have just joined this forum and it looks like3 you may have the answer for me . I am now going to do as you suggest and see what happens.
I shall return with the outcome of my dilemma.
Many thanks for your sound advice ( pardon the pun)

  • Would love some advice on a new purchase . . .

I want to buy a new laptop. I currently have a 2001 PowerPC G4. 500MHz with 640 RAM. I'd love some advice on a new purchase. Sorry if this gets long-winded.
    These are my desires:
    (1) A serious upgrade in speed, into the Giga world. I work for a law firm, and I do a lot of research. Lexis-nexis seems to put a serious strain on my G4. I see some of the new models are over 2 gigs. I've read that 2 gigs is not 4x faster than 500Mhz, in the linear sense. Will going from 500 to 2 gigs nevertheless be substantially noticeable.
    (2) More memory. In the near future, my employer is going to give its attorneys outside access to our email system and hard drive files. It would seem to me that I'll need to clear as much memory to make room for that. It look like most of the new models have a max space of 2 Ghz. That's more than 3 times the space i currently have. I'd like to think more memory will make my OS run more smoothly. If that's true, I wouldn't mind spending more money to get the biggest memory chip.
    (3) I do a lot of word processing. I grew up on Macs (California girl), but I gave up on AppleWorks a couple years ago. I hated it. I purchased Word:Mac and have been very happy with it. Nevertheless, Word:Mac slows me down. Again, that seems to be consistent with the whole need for more speed and memory.
    (4) I want wireless connectivity. I assume new Macs come with this capability (Airport?), but I'm not sure if I'll need an upgrade during the buying process. And I really have no idea how buying the airport hardware/software impacts my need what I have to but from my ISP (my cable company).
    (5) The 15 inch seems like a nicer upgrade; 17 would be nicer, but I don't need it.
    (6) I really don't want to spend more than $2500.00. But I'll spend a little more if it makes sense.
    (7) Protection. I've read that Tiger is substantially safer than other OS's. That said, if someone could infect/corrupt/whatever my files (or access client files), that would be a disaster. I've read that Norton slows your down and is unecessary with Tiger.
There's a lot of pretty cool things Mac offers that I DON'T use. Like making movies or the isight stuff. I'm mainly a girl who is either writing, researching, emailing, or reading stuff online.
I'd love some advice. Some of the stuff I've read online has left me with too many questions.
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

    (1) Comparing clock speeds isn't a good way to compare processors. That said, because of various architecture changes, the MBP is probably a solid 8-10 times faster than your G4 system.
    (2) Definately max out the RAM. My advice is to get the stock, single 1GB stick from Apple, and then head over to Crucial and buy yourself another stick. It's fairly easy to install, and Apple gives you a step by step guide on the MBP manual. You could have Apple pop in another stick, but it'll cost you more than double what you'll pay by going with Crucial ($300 vs. $135)
    (3) Office:Mac will work just fine on your MBP. It might be a little slow to open when you first boot up (6, 7, 8 bounces on the dock), but after that everything starts right up. It should make too much of a difference, but since Office is running through emulation the 2GB will help.
    (4) The wirless in an MBP is the same as in every other computer: 802.11B/G compatible. It'll work with any router out there; no need to go out and buy an AirPort router from Apple if you already have one. Then again, at $200, I don't know that I'd ever buy an AirPort. A plain old Linksys for $50 should work just fine...assuming you even need a router.
    (5) You said it. The 15" is nice, but the 17" is nicer. The 17" has a few other goodies (a few extra USB ports, a FireWire800 port, an extra FireWire400 port), but unless you have a ton of devices you're plugging in, or an external hard drive you're constantly reading from/writing to, they're a non-factor. If you wanna save some money, go with the 15"; if you wanna live a little, the 17".
    (6) On the laptop itself, that shouldn't be a problem. You can get yourself a nice 15" with AppleCare for right around what you're looking to spend. Of course, depending on what addons and software you get (MS Office, a bag, mouse, etc.), you're probably looking at closer to $3000.
    (7) You hit it right on the head. There's really not much you need to do. Turn on the firewall built into OS X; make sure your router is secure (MAC address filtering, strong pass code, WPA2 encryption); and make sure you change your passwords every so often (every month or two should be more than sufficient). While it's not entirely necessary, based on your line of work it, it would probably be wise to get yourself an external hard drive (HDD) onto which you can backup your files. A MyBook from Western Digital wouldn't be a bad idea. If you go with the 17", get the Pro edition for higher speeds with FireWire 800. If you go with the 15", get the Premium. And, to save some money, buy through Amazon.com
Some suggestions on what you should get to compliment your MBP:
The first is a nice bag to carry it in. I personally like Marware's black italian leather CEO Milano. But if you're not into leather or don't want to spend that kind of money (why money would be a problem when buying a $3000 computer, I don't know...), then check out Brenthaven. They have some quality bags with plenty of storage for all your gadgets and whatnot.
The second thing you needs is AppleCare. While I personally find it ridiculous that a person who just bought a $3000 computer doesn't get at least a years worth of tech support, AppleCare is well worth the money. It extends your tech over the phone tech support from 90 days to 3 years and your warranty from 1 year to 3.
Apple's tech support is second to none (and they actually speak english ), and the extended warranty is a must. The best part of all is being able to take your computer to the Genius Bar in an Apple store. There's nothing quite like being able to walk into a store and have a living, breathing person help you. No crappy music while your put on hold, no having follow directions over a phone... you just give your Mac to a genius and let them do all the work.
If for whatever reason you're unsure about getting AppleCare, you don't have to buy it right now. So long as you buy it and register your MBP within the initial warranty period (1 year), you're all set. So, feel free to try out AppleCare under your current warranty before you drop $300 or so on the extended AppleCare.
The final thing that I recommend you buy, especially if you plan on having this baby on your lap, is a cooler. That is, a laptop tray with fans to provide some extra cooling capacity. Your MBP (or any other laptop/portable, for that matter) sits on top of, or attaches to, the cooler and provides power to the fans via USB cable. I don't know that you'll be getting any burns if you use this thing on your lap without a cooler (or any kind of tray, for that matter), but it certainly isn't comfortable.
As for particular brands/models, I can't really give you one. These things are put out by a lot of smaller companies, and come in so many different variations that it's hard to keep track of. For example, the website I bought mine from no longer exists and I've yet to see anything else that quite resembles what I have. That's not to say these things aren't quality, but don't go looking for something from a name brand company. All I can say to do is search on Google or Froogle for laptop cooler. On the bright side, you'll find plenty of coolers to choose from and you'll have something totally unique.
Well, that covers the three musts. There other various things that you may or may not like...maybe a Marware protection pack or a mouse...but it's really a matter of preference from here on out. Personally, the only other thing I'm getting is a mouse. I've never been a fan of trackpads. I much prefer using a mouse, especially if I'm at a desk writing a paper or doing research. But that's just me...
Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck, and enjoy your MBP!

  • My screen is shattered will Apple give credit for new purchase

I dropped my I pad 3 and screen is shattered still works otherwise does anyone know if Apple will give any credit towards new purchase?

Apple does not give credit toward new purchases although they do have a recycling program that will get you a gift card but the device has to be in decent working order. Obviously the shattered screen blows that.
They do offer an out of warranty replacment plan whereby you can purchase a refurbished iPad at a reduced price.
My iPad is not eligible for warranty service. What are my service options?
Apple offers two service options for iPads that are not eligible for warranty service.
    Battery Replacement Service
If your iPad requires service only because the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, please refer to the Battery Replacement Service information.
    Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.
    iPad model
    Out-of-Warranty Service Fee
    iPad mini
    $219
    iPad, iPad 2,
    iPad mini Retina
    $249
    iPad 3rd, 4th generation,
    iPad Air
    $299
A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in US dollars and are subject to local tax.
Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPad that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.
Apple reserves the right to determine whether or not your iPad is eligible for Out-of-Warranty service. Replacement iPads have a 90-day limited hardware warranty or assume the remainder of your standard warranty or AppleCare product coverage, whichever is longer. Please see the AppleCare+ for iPad andApple Repair Terms And Conditions for further details.

I work on dual screens on a new mac pro but when I do the 4 finger swipe it moves both screens, is there a way to move just the screen that is active?

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.

  • New mac user, IMac with thunderbolt dual screen no longer works

Hi, I have just started using a mac for work and was loving my new dual screen setup. it was functional for a day and now the second screen is black and saying I should check the signal cable. I have
Tried other DVI cables that go from thunderbolt to screen
tried 3 screens, one of them from a different brand
         I have updated firmware
and restarted / shutdown/ disconnected device then reconnect about 10 times
and pressed detect displays about 20 times (it seems to detect the screen, its just not sending it anything?)
before the screen stopped I had to do a restart for the latest Itunes and mac updates

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

  • External monitor simply not working - including with external dock (dual screen)

I can't get the external monitor (aka dual screen) to work on my T60 via the VGA port. My model is currently running Windows XP and has a ATI Radeon X1300 video card.
I'm 6 months out of warantee (although this problem started while in warantee but I can't convince Lenovo of that).
    I've tried the following:
    - ensuring "extend my monitor onto this desktop" in windows display properties
    - disabling/enabling Presentation Director and trying all the schemes
    - setting all different combinations of modes for resolution/colour on both (LCD + VGA) monitor
    - trying two different monitors and cables (which did work with other computers)
    - Updating the video drivers (from the Lenovo website) and Presentation Director to the latest versions
I then figured it might be a hardware fault, so I tried to see if the external monitor was activated on bootup. I made sure the "LCD + VGA" option on boot was selected in BIOS. Still no joy.
Finally, I figured the actual VGA connector was broken so I bought a compatible mini docking station (port replicator) and attached the VGA cable to that and even that didn't work.
What on earth could be wrong if it's not the software and not the VGA connector? The video card is working as its powering the LCD display?
Is my only option to give it in to repair (I can't afford that)?

If all of it works with another system then it could be drivers or internal things but try that first.
There are some driver updates on the Lenovo site. Make sure your BIOS are updated and such.
    Good Luck,
Yup, checked the cables and monitor with another system (actually with the same laptop using a USB->VGA adaptor which isn't a long-term fix)
Also updated to all the latest driver including a BIOS update (which I forgot to mention).

  • New window opens in main monitor when using dual screen

I am using dual screens and my "main screen" is on the left. Ever since Firefox updated to 32.0.1 on Monday I've been having this issue. Before the update, I would have my main Firefox window opened on the left and, when I click on a link to open a new window, it would open on the right screen. Now, it will only open on the left screen, where the other window is. If I drag the original window to the right monitor and open a link, the new window will open on the right monitor. But once I drag the original window back to the left, new links will open in the left again.
Before if I had this problem, I would simply drag the new window to the right monitor, then back to the left and close it. Then click the link again and it would open in the right. Kind of a work around I guess. But since the update, even this will not work. Any suggestions? Or is this a new function of the updated version? Is there a way for me to go back to the previous version? Any help is appreciated!

    Hi hollytotheg,
I understand that links opening in new windows are opening in the active screen, not on the right, second monitor.
This may be helpful: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/monitor-master/] the search recommends this.
However I would also recommend suggesting an enhancement in input about dual monitor new window restriction.

There are very specific requirements for using an iMac as an external display.
From Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
What are the requirements for TDM?
A Mac notebook or desktop with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt connection
A Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort cable

Generally any Mac made since 2009 can handle FCP X.
Your small screen is not ideal unless you are young and have good vision.
However, you needn't ask whether or not your computer is suitable as you can find out yourself by downloading the free 30 day trial.

  • I have an older version of the airport extreme, can i still set it up to be a dual band router like the newer versions?

Wondering if an airport extreme router that I bought back in 2009 will function as a dual band router, similar to the newer versions.  I wish to run my mac off of the lesser Ghz and the periphery devices off of the other(ipad, iphone).  I also have an apple tV, is this possible?

The 2009 model extremes are simultaneous dual band (but the 2007 model was not - it was dual band, but not simultaneous).  Your problem is that I know of no way to force a given device onto a given bandwidth on an extreme.  Both channels share the same SSID, and a device simple connects via whichever frequency it gets the best connection.
This is unlike other simultaneous dual band wifi routers.  I use a netgear wndr4500 (n900), and each radio is assigned a different SSID (and can also be configured independently in terms of security settings, and even turned on or off indepentently).  That way, I can force a given dual-band device to connect on a particular frequency by connecting it to that frequency's SSID.  The two SSIDs still function over the same subnet, so all 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connected devices can see eachother on the same DHCP subnet.
But, I do not think you can set up an airport extreme like that - that sort of configuration is simply not an option with those devices.

Any help would be mucho appreciated.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
