New Quad G5 - 'unknown device' on Firewire Bus

Even when nothing is connected to the Firewire ports, and after rebooting, System Profiler shows an 'unknown device' on the Firewire Bus. The Firewire bus works correctly, I've used it with hard drives and a Focusrite Saffire audio interface. The unknown device is always in the list.
Other Quad users seeing the same thing?

same thing for me, I think it's not something wrong.

  • Unknown Device Lacie Firewire DVD+/-RW

I have a Lacie dvd+/-rw 8X4X12 F A Porsche firewire that my mini won't recognize. Profiler say's its an unknown device. I had it working when I got it this summer, with panther, but remember it being a pain it the harddrive to install.
None of the software finds it including iDVD, Toast, and I tried patch burn today. Nope nothing. Tried the firmware update too. Seems to work OK with windows. I haven't needed it with Tiger and now I do.
Fairly new to Mac so please help.

The firewire bus reports it as an unknown device and gives it the standard firewire atributes of 400mbps. I can be more accurate if thats what you need but I am not on the mini at the moment. It is not listed under disk burners.
I have a lot of other equipment running through a router thing(?) including a Hard drive, Audio in/out device, and sometimes a Mini DV. None seem to have a problem. I tried the Lacie solo at least once, nothing. Also, since I posted I tried Lacie's utilities again and still nothing, although the firmware updater mentions a dvdrw in parenthases, but doesn't need to update it.
    It's a mini nightmare alright.

  • New dv6-6145dx "Unknown device"

Hi everyone.  I have a new dv6-6145dx laptop, which has the AMD A8 quad-core processor.
Out of the box it shows a yellow alert and an "Unknown device" in the device manager under the "USB" section.  It's the seventh entry from the bottom of the USB area.
Does anyone else out there see this on their machine, and if not and you have this exact machine, can you tell me what the 7th from the bottom USB device actually is?
    thanks!
    Keith

    Hi,
Go into Device Manager, right click on the problem device and select Properties.  Click the Details tab, choose Hardware Ids from the dropdown box and post back with the details shown under Value.

  • ISight -missing FireWire Bus

My external iSight camera will no longer work on my G4 iMac after upgrading to iLife 08. It works on my Powerbook G4 laptop so there isn't a problem with the UBS cable. I have compared System Profiler details on both laptop and iMac. On laptop FireWire- Firewire Device Tree- FireWire Bus shows iSight.
On the iMac under FireWire there are no entries under FireWire Bus. Any suggestions

Turn off and unplug from the power socket the iMac and leave for 20mins to reset the firewire ports.

  • Firewire Bus/Unknown Device?

Hello to all. I just picked up a New 2.3GHz Power Mac and when I was checking the System Profiler in the Firewire section it reads Firewire Bus
    Unknown Device
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
The funny thing is I have nothing plugged into any of the Firewire Ports! The other strange thing is I have a 20 inch Cinema Display (which has a USB and Firewire Hub built into the back of the display) and If I plug that Firewire plug into the Computer I get a Duplicate reading of the info above (looks like this):
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
I called Apple and They had me run every test under the sun. As a last resort They had me erase the Drive and do a reinstall of just the basic Apple Software and this is what I ended up with. I thought maybe one of you kind folks might have some idea of what the **** is going on.
    Thanks

Thanks so much for your replies. So what is the technical explaination for this because I have been on the phone with Apple for hours over the last 2 days send them all sorts of system data. I even mentioned the fact that I have seen postings listed on this forum with other people with the same Unkown Error issue happening to there Dual Core machines and the people I have spoken with at Apple are acting like the have never heard of this before. I only noticed this Unknown Device thing because I am in the Audio Recording business and I am having a problem with my Digidesign DIGI002 interface giving me this slight distortion problem coming out of the 002 unit. But this was happening when I had the 002 connected to my Powerbook 17inch 1.33. I figured it was some type of software issue but now I'm checking into the 002 as the culprit! And the people down at Digidesign have never heard about this Unknown Device Issue as well and think that could be messing up the 002 but I do not have this Unknown Device thing going on with my Powerbook. So I'm stumped!
    Thanks again!

  • Unkown Device Showing up on Firewire Bus when nothing is connected

I have a brand new G5 dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC not INTEL pci-e and when I go to the System Profiler and look under the Firewire Bus page it's indicating that I have an Unknown Device connected when in fact I don't have anyting externally connected. I do have two Digidesign PCI-E Audio cards installed but I can't see how this would be considered a firewire device. Anyone else have this problem or ideas on this? Thanks!

  • IBook won't load Firewire drive; "unknown device"

That's the summation via System Profiler. It's a SmartDisk Firelite enclosure but I swapped the old 40 GB drive that failed for a new Seagate Momentus 80 GB drive. My G4 dualie recognizes the new SmartDisk setup fine. It loads immediately and I was able to access via all the utilities. Transfers work well.
But on the 1.33 iBook the green light appears on the SmartDisk enclosure, but no threat of loading. Only System Profiler identifies something, "unknown device" with 400 capability. When I remove the firewire cable, System Profiler doesn't see anything.
I had no trouble with the SmartDisk prior to the old drive failing. It worked perfectly on the iBook. My firewire port appears to be okay, since I tried Target Disk Mode with the two computers and it worked well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I Googled and found many issues of "unknown device" related to firewire drives, but none that seemed to precisely fit this case, a drive that was recognized on one computer but not another. Both are running 10.4.11.

I'm still baffled but tonight I found an acceptable alternative, a Macally 250 Firewire/USB enclosure that I had in my closet but never used previously. The Seagate drive loads on both the dualie and iBook using that enclosure, which is bulkier than the SmartDisk but right now I don't really care.

  • FireWire Bus : Unable to list FireWire devices

My FireWire drives (4 lacies) quit mounting. The system profiler says "Warning FireWire Bus : Unable to list FireWire devices". Is there something I should try before I go to Applecare with my brand new MacBook Pro with the glossy screen? I have check permissions and verified the disk and checked the cables, drives, etc they all work on other computers.

I installed leopard on my mac mini's external FW boot drive with no problems and have used it for days. Then, yesterday my house experienced a momentary power drop (it was fast; not like a brownout) which resulted in my Firewire port becoming inaccessible! The system was unbootable.
Thinking initially that it was a problem with the FW drive, I attached it to another Mac. Saw it no problems. So, the problem clearly lay on the Mac Mini.
Ultimately, the solution was just solved by resetting the Mini's Power Manager Unit. Search Apple's technical articles for instructions for your particular Apple computer.
    Hope this helps

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.

  • "FireWire Unknown device" - but nothing is connected!

    Hi everyone,
although I have no FireWire devices connected, System Profiler keeps showing an "Unknown device - maximum speed 400 Mb/sec".
Seems like the FW bus retains the memory of something that was connected at some time, but I cannot reset it. I ran through the suggested "unplug everything, shut down and wait 30 minutes" method, with no positive results.
Problem is, my Avid Mojo will not run if it thinks there is anything else connected to the FW bus.
Anyone have any ideas on how to reset the FireWire bus?
    Thnks a million!

    Hi Roberto Servera-
Did you look with everything except mouse unplugged?
Have you tried removing any PCI cards if present?

Hi. Well - Apple FireWire "trouble-shooting" is here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303598
but I would check the website of the device manufacturer for up-to-date drivers - and possibly try a FireWire reset, bottom of the page here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
If none of this works, re-installing the combo OS X update may help. (Personally - I disconnect all FireWire devices while updating - I still remember the amusing 10.3.6 incident...)
    Good Luck.

  • Firewire & bus powered devices - Phonic FireFly 302 Plus

    Hello Appleheads,
Looking for some help if you have a spare moment.
I just purchased a Phonic Firefly 302 Plus audio interface, and even though it is supposed to be able to be powered by the firewire bus, I am unable to get it to work. The unit's power light does not come on at all, however when using the external power supply that is also supplied it does work. I have tested two firewire cables, 1 of which I know works.
Are there any tricks to get this to work? Can you change power output settings for firewire ports somewhere in the system?
I am using a 6 circuit firewire 400 cable that came with the device. This is the only firewire device connected to my computer. The computer is connected to a power supply. Running OSX 10.6.4.
    My Macbook Pro...
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.
    Hartz.

The unit works fine with DC power. I am yet to test it on another computer to know for sure.
An interesting point has been raised to me though that has been discussed here: https://www.mhsecure.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=3&id=21&artlang=en&hig hlight=bus power
+The MacBook Pro models include protection circuitry to shut down the bus power when a device's inrush current amount violates a threshold. This issue affects the startup transient only, so you can power the MIO from its power supply to boot the box, then connect the FW to the computer, and remove the MIO power supply after it has joined the bus.+
Surely this threshold would be set to the maximum voltage provided on the bus? 12v?
Either way I have decided that I will just use the DC adapter.

  • G555. Need drivers for SM Bus and another Unknown device for Windows XP.

I try to install Windows XP on my G555. I got all other drivers, but cannot find drivers for SM Bus and an Unknown device. And what's this device?
The second problem is that after I installed all the drivers, the card reader disappeared. It was there after I installed Windows XP, before I install drivers.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Simpleguy,
    Welcome to the forum!
In thinkpads, it's usually intel chipset driver. For AMD based G555, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the driver you need:- http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_2476.html
As for other unknown device, find it's PCI ID with any other known information and paste here.
    Hope it helps.

Warning:          Unable to list FireWire devices.

    Hi try this...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.
