New Quad vs 2007 Dual Core 3.0 Gigahertz

I had an early 2007 Dual Core 3.0 gh Mac Pro with 12 gb of ram. Thanks to a burglar it is gone. Poof.
Which of the 3 new quad core Mac Pro's would be an equivalent? My dad needs to duke it out with State Farm... CPU speed vs 8 Core using Adobe Photoshop 7 (I think) and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3?

You might want to also take into note, that 2009 MPs are running DDR3 memory, vs. DDR2 on the 2008. Speed is faster on DDR3, and has more bandwidth.
There have been a lot of discussions on the DDR3 implementation; whether its better performance wise to install in "threes" (triple-channel) or just to install "bigger amounts" of ram in dual channel. I.e. 12 GB vs. 16GB. Apparently it just depends on what type of work you're doing. In some cases "more" ram will benefit you; in more intensive app work triple-channel w/less GB will benefit better.
Also the Quad 2009 can take up to 16 GBs (still little pricey though...)

Given that the stumbling block to more flexible power options is the infamous patent-protected MagSafe connector
The funny thing is, I've seen loads of cheap "replacement" MagSafe adapters on eBay, Amazon and in local shops. On eBay, they cost (new) about $26, on Amazon I've seen them as cheap as $17!!, against the $80 that Apple charges. And apparently, it's not worth it to pursue the matter, it's been going on for more than a year now.
made of pure unobtanium and guarded by packs of rabid lawyers, someone is shooting themselves in the foot by making the power bricks so frail that the secondary damaged goods recovery market grows without bounds...
I really dig that unobtainium reference :-)
What I've found is that the bricks aren't so frail but the DC cord is! Apparently that's difficult to make resilient, with the characteristics that Apple wanted them to have. Out of every ten broken MagSafe adapters I've seen, only two actually have failed electronics, five have frayed DC wiring and three have a broken MagSafe connector.

  • Is Adobe Flash compatible with WinXP using `Dual Core CPUs ??

Is Adobe Flash compatible with WinXP using Dual Core CPUs ??
I have this in my current system
    WinXP 32bit SP3
    Asus M2N68-AM Plus motherboard
AMD X2 7850 Black Edition Dual Core CPU
    2GB DDR2
WD Caviar SE16 500GB SATA drive
    Onboard VGA **only**
I keep having consistent problems using this new motherboard with a Dual Core CPU
My new motherboard keeps crashing randomly while watching video online.
I can watch a video for about 2 min or even 20min and then the PC randomly crashes
I get this weird mosaic pattern on the screen whenever it crashes and then I have to press Reset to Reboot
And it **only** crashes after streaming a video on any of the websites, YouTube, CBS.com, NBC.com, Hulu.com etc, etc
My last PC never crashed while watching a video online - it was just slow since Adobe player is a hog -- and it was still a 1.8GHZ CPU !!
My last PC is still using version 10.1 for the Adobe Flash player -- and it ***never*** crashes
The most I ever see happen on that one is that the player might occasionly crash in the video window and the error message says to reload the Flash player.
Then I tried this remedy of disabling the Hardware Acceleration in the Adobe Settings  -- but no luck still.
I even downgraded to 10.1, then 10.0 and it still keeps getting these random crashes while watching video
I'm wondering if WinXP 32bit is really compatible with Adobe Flash when using a Dual Core CPU
Before I plunk down $100 for Win7, I'm thinking about trying Ubuntu and see what luck I have.
I haven't seem anything to the contrary yet.
    thanks,

What browser & version do you use?
How exactly does that "crash" manifest itself?  What exact error message are you getting?
Have you tried to update the device drivers for your graphics/video/display adapter?

  • K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and Dual Core

I just received my new MSI K8N Neo4 LSI Platinum motherboard and I am waiting on my new processor AMD Athalon64 dual core 4400+. My questions are:
    1. If the bios on the motherboard is not the latest one will the motherboard boot with the dual core processor. If not what are my options?
    2. If I manage to boot, and all the components are new, assuming I will boot into DOS, can I make a bios update from there or I need to install Windows and then do a bios update?
    3. And what are the bios update procedures for MSI motherboards?
Thanks a lot guys for help

    hi,
In order to use dual core CPU on the MB, update BIOS to the latest version (3.4 and above) before using it. After flashing BIOS, please enter BIOS Load Optimized defaults, Save&exit it, then change CPU to dual core one.
For how to update BIOS, refer to:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/bios/note/award.htm
You can use the dual core without updating the Bios. However, your second core won't work until the update. So you can use the cpu without the correct bios version to install windows.

  • POwerMac G5 Dual Core vs Dual Processor

Am thinking about upgrading my G4 computers and going to the G5 Powermac. More than likely a dual processor or dual core. What is the difference between the dual processor and dual core? Is there any difference between these re: efficiency and how they work overall?

A "dual processor" refers to two physically distinct and separate chips. A "dual-core" refers to 2 processors on a single chip, often sharing certain resources (eg cache, memory, etc).
As far as I know, the only dual processor G5 Apple currently offers, is the Quad, or 2 dual-cores. The 2 GHz & 2.3 GHz machines, have only a single chip with dual-cores (2 processors on each chip), to the best of my knowledge.
To the best of my knowledge, having separate chips is better whenever possible, than multiple-cores (processors) on a single chip, because multiple cores have to share resources.
However, if you can only have a single chip, multiple-cores (2 processors) are advantages. It won't double your productivity, but should give it least a 40-60% boost. This assumes that the specific software you are running, takes advantage of multiple cores. A lot of software does not take advantage of multiple cores, and having a multiple-core machine is a waste.

  • Core 2 Duo vs Dual Core i5

I'm looking to replace my 2008 MacBook Pro (2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo) with a the new Mac Mini i5 Dual Core. I'm trying to decide if this is an upgrade in performance. I already use an external monitor with bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. I don't do much fancy but I like to increase my performance every couple years. I have almost never used the MBP as a portable unit. Pretty much stays on my desk.
I can't find any definitive info I could understand to see if this is worth the change.
    Thanking everyone in advance,

that might change the game.  make me just stick with my MBP for a bit more to see what pans out.

  • G5 Dual Core Powermac says no card detected

    Hi All
It's been a frustrating day - first off I carted my mac 30 miles to an Apple Centre and waited for a long time whilst they installed an Airport Extreme Card with Bluetooth into My brand new G5 2Ghz Powermac (Dual Core).
Got the machine home and it turns out that they re installed the RAM incorrectly and after half an hour or so I sorted that.
I turn on the machine and try to detect the Airport Card and it says "no card is installed' The card is installed but it just doesn't work.
I can't get back to the store until next week and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what may be wrong. It looks like the antenna is connected and everything seems secure.
    Help anyone please.

You might want to read the thread Airport Card & the new Dual Core Powermac's.
    Otherwise your choices are:
    Card is not installed correctly.
    Card is defective.
    Motherboard of G5 is defective.

  • Elite XL 1208 work with Dual Core Intel?

I have a GCC Technologies Elite XL 1208 printer that I have used for years with my Mac. I recently got a new desktop 2x2 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon and I can't seem to set up my Elite XL 1208 to work with it. Does anyone know if this printer is compatible with the new Macs?

    Hi a s7-
I do not believe that particular printer is supported in OSX, is it? Maybe i am wrong but I thought GCC stopped making printers years ago.
How does it connect? Does it print via AppleTalk? If so, make sure AppleTalk is turned on in your Network Preferences.

  • New Quad Core 27" i5 imac vs New Dual Core 27" i5 imac...

Even tho the Quad core 27" imac has 4 REAL cores as opposed to the Dual core 27" imac which only has 2 Real and 2 virtual(with hyperthreading)....a similarly spec'd dual core actually costs slightly more when you bump up the GPU to match the Quad's ATI RADEON 5750 with 1 GB of SDRAM.
For example with the student discount:
    1) 3.6 Ghz Intel Core i5 27" iMac with 4MB level 3 cache, 1TB HDD, 4MB RAM,hyper threading & Turbo Boost AND upgrading the GPU to the ATI RADEON 5750 costs $1,914
    2) 2.8 Ghz Intel Quad Core i5 27" with 8MB level 3 cache, 1TB HDDD 4MB RAM, (no hyper threading), has Turbo Boost and comes with ATI RADEON 5750 GPU costs $1899
Personally I'd rather have 4 REAL cores AND 8MB of level 3 cache than hyperthreading. Am I wrong? Why is the Quad core actually LESS?
I plan to do moderate HD video editing on imovie, and FCE, web design, animation using Flash and Anime Studio as well as photoshop and photography work.
Thanks for any and all feed back. I'm waiting to see if the new ilife rumors are true on August 7th before ordering, so I've got time.

It was the same with the last generation, where the top upgraded Core 2 was more expensive than the quad.
The quadcore Core i5 27" is by far the faster computer - partially because of the two extra cores, but also because of the bigger cache and the integrated memory controller. The dual is more expensive for two reasons:
    1) BTO options are always more expensive
    2) The CPU used in the top dualcore is actually more expensive than the one in the quad. The world is full of people who only look at the clockspeed, and for them Intel makes a model with the highest possible clockspeed and charges them for the nose through it. It is slower than the slowest quad on any reasonable benchmark, but it still sells.
Pick the quadcore, it's a much better computer.

  • 2 Dual core intel xeon vs quad core. Whats the difference??

I came across someone who's selling his mac pro 1.1 (aprox 2-3 years old machine) which hosts 2 dual core intel xeon processors 2.66 Ghz (4 total cores) with an L2 cache of 4 MB per processor and 3 gb of RAM. He is asking for 1200.00
    I wonder:
    1. is there a significant difference between the machine described above and the new 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3500 series processor machines Apple offers?
    2. Is 1200 a good deal considering its a 2-3 year old machine? how much would it cost me brand new?
    3. I am planning to purchase the machine to use Logic Pro 8 (considering to upgrade to 9) which I currently run on my mac book intel core duo 1.8 GHZ. Which of the two machines will be optimal for it?
Thanks in advance for your time!

Using the scores on the GeekBench site, I show that a Mac Pro 1,1 2.66GHz gets a score of 4544.
    http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/218641
The Mac Pro 4,1 Quad Core 2.66GHz with all its Nehalem glory gets a score of 9256.
    http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/229504
Benchmark tests versus real-world performance, along with your mileage, may vary. But that should give you an idea of what kind of what you're getting.

  • Connecting new quad core macbook pro to external monitor

How would one go about connecting the new MacBook Pro to an external HD monitor? "The Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4." Does this mean it won't work with the quad core? I'd like to set up another monitor with my new 15 inch laptop and Screen Recycler isn't really doing the trick, tried with with a 24 inch imac and it was terrible quality. Please help, thanks.

I have a mid year 2010 17" MBP and needed to do the same thing.
I got a mini-DVI port adaptor to HDMI, and connected it to my stereo - so I could watch on big flat screen TV and hear 5.1 sound via surround speakers, works great.  I down load missed episodes of castle and stuff and watch them all in HD.  (Via ITUNES).
The catch, most mini port cables - do not carry both video and audio, even if HDMI and even if they say they do!  After buying the wrong cable at the local apple affiliate, I learned there are only two that did work.
(even thought the packaging said they carried sound, the cable in fact was not recognized by the sound drivers, so no sound through Mac X (Snow Leopard).  I got the second cable form Moshi, and it worked instantly.
    NO problems since, at all.
So does the port work with the quad duo core chip? Yes to I5, and yes to I7.  My IPAD has I5, and my MBP has I7. It's a dual core, virtual quad core, and it's works beautifully.

  • 13'' dual-core with 16gb ram vs 15'' quad-core 8gb ram -- ram vs cores?

    Hello.  I am at a point between choosing a 13'' dual-core i5 with 16gb ram vs the 15'' quad-core with 8gb ram - both retinas.
I will be using photoshop and illustrator while uploading/downloading large files constantly.  After much headscratching I almost decided on the 13'' i5 because from my experience, RAM limitations is where I usually run into problems, and don't see the extra price of i7 worth it when it is still a dual-core.  For the same price I can get a 15'' quad, but will be stuck with 8gb ram.
I don't care about the screen size, I have good eyes and the weigth trade-off makes this a non-issue.
I'm thinking about down the road, as either of these I'm sure will be fine solutions.  I'm just wondering where does the edge really come in this case?  Ram or processor / cores?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your reply tjk, of course with 16gb on the 15'' for $200 more  I'd have easier time, but in this case I am comparing a refurbished - the lowest 15'' 16gb I could find would cost $500 more, I just can't do it.
I should make clear that this particular comparison between 13''w/16 and 15''w/8, they are the same price (the 13 being new) - which is why I'm stuck.
To rephrase - for the same price - which will I regret less in 4 years?
As a side note, I can't believe I'm even thinking about paying this much money for something that is not upgradeable, but that's another discussion entirely.

  • How can I tell if I have an i7 dual core or quad core processor?

I just got my brand new (2011 refurbished) MacBook Pro yesterday and it is slow and choppy right out of the box. I checked the "About This Mac" screen and it says I have the "2.2 GHz Intel Core i7". It says nothing about "dual core" or "quad core". I thought I was buying a quad core, but now I'm starting to wonder exactly what I bought.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
    Thanks,

    You have a quad core.
    Number of Cores: 4

  • LE 9.0 performance on Mac Mini (dual core) Vs. iMac (quad core)

I am in the process of evaluating options to replace my 2007 MBP with a faster DAW. I am on a budget so while I am looking for performance improvements over what I have, I don't need overkill either. I am considering the 2011 Mac Mini (2.5 GHz, dual core) and the 2011 iMac (2.5 GHz quad - core). Whichever configuration I choose, I will bump up RAM to 8 GB.
I use LE 9.0 and a Presonus Firestudio Project and would like to know whether what kind of performance improvements I will see between the two options I am considering. I use a lot of plugins, and an external Firewire 800 drive for recording. Obviously with the Mini, I will have to buy an optical drive as well. I already have two monitors, keyboard and mouse.
The only thing that worries me about the Mac Mini is the slower 5400 rpm hard drive. While I plan on using an external drive for recording, I am concerned because of the number of plugins and sample files that need to load during recording / playback.
