New RAID Problen

So i've got a AMD 1400, MS 6380 K7T266 Pro-R 512 DDR
2 identical (without bad sectord) 40GB ATA100 Maxtors
i want to stripe (RAID 0)
fast track BIOS detects the array of 1 80GB HD
i can install an OS, i installed the raid-drivers in windows
and the Fast Check monitoring utility
but after a couple of reboots (installing drivers etc.)
it says an error occured, reading from the register
(is corrupt) and i can't get windows started anymore
then i have to format.  X(
Also when trying to install XP it said during the installation that my RAID drivers weren't good for XP
(i tried the std. drivers and the latest ones)
So, i guess something goes wrong when windows
writes data to the HD's it kind of looses it somewhere
(including data for the register) or it can't find the data
back. I think the RAID Drivers are the cause of this.
Could a bios flash help?
i'm still using the original AMI 1.4 Bios

i'm sorry, but i've tried it without the utility
and i get the same problems!  ;(

Other users reported this a long time ago....
i didn't find it in the forum
is there anywhere else where i can get this info?

  • S20 *new* RAID config for retail Windows 7 install...questions

I’ve recently ordered a S20 and I have a few questions about my situation/configuration, if anyone has the knowledge and time, I'd really appreciate it.
I’ve configured the workstation to be shipped without an installed OS, a single SATA hard drive, and no optical drive.  I have a new retail copy of Windows 7 Professional that I will install, two Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives that I will install in RAID1 configuration, and a new DVD multi-recorder ready to install.  The drive that comes with the workstation will be used as well, but not as the boot drive.  I wish to boot off of a partition on the RAID1 set.
I’ve looked into the hardware/user guides for as much information as I could find, but I’m not clear, and thus concerned, as to what I will need to do to get RAID setup with a boot partition and install Windows.
I see that there are three SATA ports for hard drives on the main board.
    1)  Can RAID be configured using ANY combination of these ports, and is the unused port still available for normal SATA drive hosting?
For instance, can I configure two 1TB hard drives on the first two ports and configure a third non-RAID drive on the third port?
I am now familiar with the BIOS RAID configuration utility from reading the guides.
    2)  How do I install an OS (Windows 7 32 or 64) on a new RAID partition, once it is configured, if my retail version of Windows doesn't have the driver?
For instance, can I provide the driver during installation via the Windows 7 setup?
I understand that there are also two SATA ports for optical drives on a separate controller (for five SATA ports total).
    3)  If I attach my DVD drive to one of the SATA ports intended for optical devices, will the system see it as a bootable device?
I need to make my DVD drive a boot device in order to install windows, so I'm hoping that the system will see it that way.  I also hope that the SATA ports are labeled on the main board!  (Optical 0, 1 / Disk 0, 1, 2)  ???
If anyone has the time to help me with these three questions I think I will be more at ease.  I worry about going off the path and ordering a blank machine, but I am adamant about a non-OEM OS.
BTW, I am moving to the S20 from a five year old IntelliStation M Pro which is the best machine I've owned so far.  I also keep a ThinkPad X61 at my side.  Really looking forward to the new workstation!
    Cheers!

    erik, thank you so much.
I was thrown off by the Marvell driver in the S20 download page, I think.  Now I'm ready to go.

  • Kernel Panic when using a new RAID 5 array

I recently set up a new Sans Digital 5 disk 7.2TB hardware RAID 5 array that's connected to a Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 PCI-X card which has been updated to the latest drivers. The same card supports a number of JBOD enclosures that run as mirrored RAIDs under SoftRAID 4.0. My system is a 2.7Ghz DP Tower.
Upon trying to copy to the new RAID 5 volume I encountered a kernel panic and system freeze complete with wailing fans. After a few system restarts and a call to Sans Digital I tried to connect the RAID via USB upon the recommendation of tech support. Rather than causing a crash while copying I received an error message in the copy progress window that said that some files were locked and the process could not be completed and the RAID was no longer mounted in the finder.
I called Sans Digital back and they said it was probably a defective enclosure. I have just received a new one and have put that into service. All seemed fine until, when I was 30GB into a 900GB copy, the system froze. I have also tried to copy fewer files (400GB) and still get a Panic. When the RAID is idle there does not seem to be a problem. The last time the problem occurred the copy progress bar hung but the system did not fully lock up. The LEDs on the front panel of the RAID enclosure were flickering rapidly but no data was copying from my other drive. I turned off the RAID and was able to use my mouse again and restart my machine with a normal restart.
My system is running OS 10.5.8. When the RAID is off my computer runs fine.
Not sure what to try next. Any help would be appreciated - Thank you.

    Hi-
I'd be interested to know if Sonnet has any comments regarding the issue.
In Utilities/Console/Logs, there should be some indication of what is occurring when the crashes occur.

  • K8N DIAMOND: New Raid array and old HD... I'm going crazy!!! Please

    Hi guys
First, sorry for my poor english...
    My problem is:
I bought two Raptor 36 Gb for my new raid array.
I have my old HD Hitachi 250 Gb connected on sata 1.
I connected my two raptor, on sata 3 and 4, I enabled all sata port and raid config for ports 3 and 4.
I restart PC, typed F10 and set a stripe array with two raptor. All run ok...
Restarted and boot with my copy of WinXP with SP2 and NF4 raid drivers.
    Installation found my array and my Hitachi;
    Hitachi with 4 partitions; C (os), D (driver), E (films), F (music)
I create one partitions on my raid array, and it takes I: letter... So I formatted and start to copy os...
Errors occurs when, restarting pc and resetting the boot to Hard disk (the order of booting is 1 - nvidia array, 2 - hitachi 250 gb), just before loading installation, It shows a black screen with an error: "there is an error in your hard disk bla bla bla.. try to control your connection or connect to windows help....bla bla..."
The Raid array works properly, infact I try to disconnect my Hitachi from sata port 1 and all installation works (I'm writing from Win xp on the raid array).
I tried to connect the hitachi on port 1 of silicon image controller.... same error..!!
I'm desperate... I have all my life on my hitachi...
I think that there's  a sort of conflict in drive letter assignement... I cant find a solution ..
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Glad it worked, I had a feeling it would.

One question for you.. on G: partition, there's a directory called "Windows", do you suggest me to format this partition??
You can format it if you want to free up space, but unless you moved things around the My documents folder and everything in it is on that partition, along with anything you might of had on the old desktop during that Windows install.  You might have something you want there, I usually leave mine for a few month, and figure out if I have everything I need.

What I  have to do, if I need to reinstall WIn XP on first partition of raptor array??
Things should be fine now as Windows marked the Hitachi drive as G. You should be able to reinstall without issue. But if you have a lot of sensitive info on the Hitachi, I would always disconnect the Hitachi if doing a fresh install.  Once windows is done installing, hook it back up.  But next time you shouldn't have to reconfigure NVRAID after disconnecting and reconnecting.

  • Will Time Machine recognize a new RAID 1 boot volume?

I would like to convert the boot volume of my Mac Pro to a RAID 1 mirror (using a second internal hard disk) with Disk Utility. But will Time Machine recognize the RAID mirror as the boot volume it's been happily backing up and continue to back up incrementally? Or will Time Machine regard the RAID mirror as a new volume and therefore do a full backup, consuming quite a lot of disk space on the Time Machine disk? Does anyone here know?
In the past, I've discovered that even if I make a very high quality clone of my boot volume (using Super Duper), Time Machine will fail to recognize the clone and will insist on starting all over again with a full backup. I have not heard a reasonable explanation of why Time Machine does that, considering that the clone should be nearly identical to the original; it's not clear to me how Time Machine "recognizes" a volume. This makes me suspicious about how Time Machine will treat a new RAID 1 volume.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

No you are right after my TM going slow someone said to download a widget which checks the log and it all ways checks UUID first thing.

  • HT4313 once it has rebooted and entered the installation, i get the  message "it cannot be installed on this computer", i have created a new Raid Set, ive zeroed out the disks, only 10.6 or 10.5 server is allowed

I can see the restart button mentioned, but i cant get past the message that it cant be installed when it has booted up with the 10.6.4 server installation disc.
    So far:
Copied installation cd to a hard drive and booted from it.
Created new raid set (RAID 5)
    Zeroed out information on disks
10.5 server had no trouble installing
10.6 sl had no trouble installing
I used to have 10.6 server installed on the intended mac pro.
However i need to reinstall and it is not possible.
Any help would be very much appreciated

Where did you get the 10.6.4 install disk? Did it come with some other machine?
I ask because it sounds like that's the case - and it may only work with the machine (or, at least, model) it was shipped with.
However, if you have another 10.6 Server install disk, even an older version, just go with that and run Software Update after it's installed. The chances are you don't really want 10.6.4 anyway, right, but something later.

  • Found new Raid controller all of a sudden

Alright, my winter break just started from college, so I brought my computer home with me.  I hooked it up and it wouldn't boot.  Somehow a setting in the bios got changed and I had to change it back.  Now when it starts up it says it has found new hardware, it says it has found a new raid controller.  I have the driver installed that came on the msi cd.  I don't know what windows is asking for.  So since I don't know what its asking for, I click cancle.  Then it gives the deal about how the "new" hardware might not work correctly.  The computer has only been turned on for a little while but it runs fine so far.  Any thoughts on what I should do?
    System specs:
    865PE-neo2
    P4 2.8 800fsb
    1GB corsair ram
    2 120 Gig Samsung in raid 0

If your drives are on the Intel controller and working properly as Raid0, it's probably the Promise controller that Windows is seeing and asking for drivers. If you have nothing connected to Serial3&4, IDE3 you can safely disable it like Danny says.
Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>Onbaord Promise Controller - Set to "disabled"

  • Cloning a single drive to a new RAID 1 set

    Hi,
Can I clone a drive from a machine (that has dual controller, RAID 1 capability but, was not setup using it) to a new pair of hardware RAID 1 disks using method/software in the same machiine, now. I think the machine should have originally used it's hardware
RAID 1 capability but, for whatever reason wasn't and now,  I would like to do that. Can I use Acronis or Ghost to clone the single drive to the new RAID 1 set?
    Thanks.
    gk

It is possible to create a mirror from an existing JBOD disk, however the ability to do this depends on the capabilities of the RAID controller. In my experience, this is something found on high-end controllers, of which I know exist but have not used.
There is a method using some 3ware cards where you have to take a disk image of the single disk. Then you import it into a mirror but the drive is erased. Then you can redeploy the disk image onto the mirror.
Of course there is a big problem you may encounter. You would only want to do this if the disk was originally on RAID JBOD. If the disk was originally on IDE or AHCI modes, going through this process would likely result in Windows STOP 0x7B on first boot
after being cloned to the mirror.
If the data is important on this disk, I would recommend not trying to put it into a mirror. Instead you can use Ghost (or similar) program to do a sector copy to a new disk. I typically recommend that the new disk be a different size from the old disk so
you can easily determine which is which.

  • How do I migrate the data on a RAID on my old Mac Pro to a new RAID array on my new Mac Pro?

We have an older Mac Pro (no Thunderbolt) with four drives (2 of which are configured RAID 0).  The new machine has a LaCie RAID on it with 2 drives RAID 1 and 2 drives RAID 0.  What's the best way to migrate the data from the old system to the new system?  Do I use Migration asst to get the data and settings from the old main to the new main and then xfer the data from the ancillary drives over?

  • Why Doesnt the Time Capsule show up my New Raid Setup External HD?

I purchased a new enclosure for a RAID 1 setup (2, 1TB hard drives) and plugged it into my MacBook PRO to use disk utility to set up. The setup was fine. I then plugged this unit into the Time Capsule UBS port and it shows up on the airport application (2, 923gb drives) but does NOT show up on the network - which is what I want it to do. I know the USB port on the TC works because I have a small portable hard drive, plug that in and it shows up. I then unplug it, plug in the RAID and it does not show up on the network but does show up on the airport application.
I hope someone can help me with this.

PS: I have a second question about partitioning this RAID 1 set up but not sure if this is the correct place to pose that question. basically, I want to partition this RAID 1 into 3 partitions; one for Time Machine, one for superduper clone image, and one for misc. extra space. Perhaps you can guide me on where to post this question.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Adding new RAID arrays on TD200

    Hi,
We have a TD200 server with MR10i ServeRAID card installed and a single RAID 1 array of 2x 500Gb 3.5" drives. We need to upgrade and are trying to decide the best path.
We have two free 3.5" slots so could we create a new RAID1 array on the same backplane without needing to change the internal cabling or disturb the existing array?
Alternatively all eight 2.5" drive slots are free. We could create a RAID 5 array on there, is that backplane likely to have been connected up to the MR10i? Is the MR10i card happy enough connecting to two different backplanes? Our server would require to be physically moved and switched off to get good access to the side panel, so I'm trying to get an idea before taking that step!
Our usual supplier only seems to stock IBM hotswap drives, I read somewhere else on the forums that to fit in with our existing server warranty we'd need to get Lenovo drives, is this true? Finally, if we required cabling for connecting to the 2.5" drive backplane do you have suggestions for UK based suppliers, plus what the cable codes/details are?
Lots of questions! If you can help on any of them that would be great thanks.
    Kind regards,
    Stephen.
    Solved!

This all depends on how many ports on the RAID card.  If there is more than one, you should be able to create more than one array.

  • Back up Server to new Raid 5 Configuration

I have recently had my drive fail on my server, luckly I back it up everynight. I decided to upgrade to a Raid 5 system, so got myself a 256gb Samsung Pro drive as the main drive, and 2 500gb Toshiba drives for the raid system. I set up the raid in my Bios,
and all seemed good, backed up the image I had stored, and no errors, but when booting the screen goes black, and just reboots. I thought iit must be something to do with the Raid config, so went back to the original setup, installed the image directly to
the ssd and it worked fine.
so, my question is, what do I need to do to get the backup to work on the Raid config, as I need to get this working.
    Thanks in advance...

So you are trying to do a restore of an Image to a new set of disks.
    1 disk is a 256gb and there are 2 500gb drives?
What is the raid configuration? (RAID 0, 1, 5)
When you restore the image, which disk are you restoring to?
After the restore, at what point does it reboot?
Is the BIOS set to boot from the Raid Controller?

  • New RAID 1 windows wont run

I just upgraded with a second SATA HD (identical size and make to the first) and set up a RAID 1 with the Promise controller. I followed vango44's guide and the seting up went fine. However, on the reboot, windows XP SP2 will not load. The load screen comes up, then I get a quick flash of blue screen (too quick to read) and the standard Windows "problem loading" screen comes up.
When Promise IDE is set to SATA mode, windows loads and the drive is detected just fine.
    Any ideas?

  • Expanding Hard Drive Space and Create new RAID arrays

I currently have a 120GB HD that came with computer. I recently installed a new 250GB hard drive to expand my hard drive space. The questions is, can I mirror my current (120GB) hard drive onto the new 250GB drive, install a second 250GB drive, and then create a software RAID with the new drive set, thus creating a 500GB software raid with my the data contained on my old (120GB) hard drive?

    Hi subterranean;
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
If you mirror a 120 GB drive and a 250 GB drive, the result will be equal to the smaller hence you would end up with a 120 GB mirror RAID array.
That doesn't sound to practical to me. Exactly what do you hope to gain here. It might help you to talk about end results rather then solutions. That way we can come up with solutions that will give you the results you are after.
