New RAM installed

Presario CQ62-231NR Notebook ,I installed 4 GB's of memory ram, the notebook shows 4 GB's, but it says also that 1.74 GB is usable. any help to understand this. I thought the full 4GB were available?

Hi:
This article from Microsoft should explain why you are seeing what you are seeing.

I do not know if you have a memory remapping option in your BIOS. I doubt it.
Checking the AGP aperature setting in the BIOS is not applicable in your PC.

Try to boot in Safe mode, see if you are able: Hold down shift and then power on. For wireless keyboards, hold down shift after the chime.

  • New RAM installed but System Profiler still seeing old RAM

    Hi
Recently put in a new hard drive after the last one failed. The new RAM, equaling 3GB, was installed on my iMac C2D 24" BEFORE the failure. I got it back from the shop today and checked to see if the RAM was still recognised. The System Profiler is showing 1GB or RAM, 512 in each slot, and the serial numbers match the RAM that came with the computer originally.
I'm running Snow Leopard and haven't noticed anything running slow. Is this just a glitch in the matrix?

So you are saying the original DIMMs are there plus the ones you added, all were recognized before the repair but only the Apple-supplied after the repair.
Just trying to keep all of this straight in my mind.
In that case, you might try removing the DIMMs you installed and reinstalling, one at a time and see if they are recognized. If they are not, then they may have gone bad for some reason, who knows why, and it is time to look at the warranty you have from the people from whom you purchased the DIMMs.
If it was someone like Crucial or OWC (macsales) they are really good about their lifetime warranty.
If the warranty is lifetime, contact the supplier and see what the process is for replacement.
It is strange that both would work, and then fail. But stranger things have happened with computers.

  • Power Mac G4 Won't Boot...New RAM Installed...

    Hey there,
I was just given a Power Mac G5, QuickSilver. It looked relatively clean inside, and had all the neccessary components already installed except for the RAM. I went ahead and bought 3 PC133 SDRAM modules, but when I put them in, I hear one loud beep and it appears nothing is happening. I can hear the fans blowing inside, but I don't get anything displayed.
I know this one beep means the computer doesn't see the RAM, but could my battery be dead? Would that also cause the sound?
Anyone have any other tips or tricks?
Thanks in advance for any info. I'd like to salvage this bad boy if at all possible.
    Cheers

    Hi-
Apparently it was one of the launch models for the Quicksilver, or at least that's what I'm told.
    That'll be this one:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4_733qs.html
do you know if there are limitations to how high I can go with hard drives?
That model/series (QS 2001) only supports up to 137 GB drives (128GB formatted).
You can use a 160GB drive with no worries regarding the "unused" portion.
I was kind of wondering if I could purchase a Serial ATA PCI controller card that would allow me to use SATA hard drives.
    Of course you can.
This will also get rid of the capacity limit.
However, if you want to boot to the connected drives, not all support boot.
The best, hands down, controller that also supports boot is the Firmtek Seritek line.
The 1S2 is as cheap as they come:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Firmtek/FTST1S2/
I was also given an AGP G4 (400MHz) that was missing the hard drives, RAM, and battery.
All those parts are basically the same for the QS and the Sawtooth (AGP G4).
You can try a stick of your new RAM and any ATA hard drive (up to the same limits as the 733 QS) and see if you can get it going.
Order a new PRAM battery (or 2) from OWC while your at it.
Always nice to have a fresh one.
BTW, ALL QS processors are interchangeable.
That is to say, if you find a deal on any other QS processor (and heatsink), even a dual processor, it is a straight swap.
Look around my website, as there is a bunch of information that you might find interesting:

  • Mac Pro not starting after new RAM install.

    Hey everyone,
    I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 2x2.66 GHz 6-core (12core) Mac Pro with OSX 10.7.5. I currently have 6gb 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ram installed.
I ordered 16gb (2x8gb sticks) of RAM from newegg, specifically, 2 sticks of this ram:
Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333 ECC Registered Memory for Apple
I popped it in yesterday and when I try to start up, the LED light just flashes and the screen acts as if nothing the computer hasn't been turned on. It does not beep or make any startup sounds either.
As far as I can tell this memory is in spec. It is "Registered", could this be a potential problem? I have tried various configurations of which slots to put the ram in. The only thing I haven't tried is putting the 2x8gb sticks in by themselves to see if it might be a capacity or mixing of ram issue.
Does anyone have experience with this or know where I might be going wrong?

What you have not done is actually... what I would have done first to start with!
To make sure it works and works alone.
Mixing is suppose to work now, better, but as OWC found earlier, mix and match requires DIMMs that will.
There is more in depth on MacRumors about ranking, Registered and much more about using 3rd party and what to look for and does or does not work. Which is nice, they try and tend to keep everything in one place, one thread, easy to find and read.
And Newegg price isn't really different than say buying from MacSales.

  • New RAM installed isn't recognized

    Hi,
I just clicked a new 1GB RAM chip into my old iBook G4, but it doesn't seem to be recognized.
Any ideas? Should I try popping it out and then back in again, or is there something I'm missing? The computer came with pre-installed 512 MB RAM, and that is still recognized, but it says the other slot is still empty.
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Sorry everyone. Looks like I just needed to really pop it into place. Second try was a charm.

  • NEW RAM INSTALL PROBLEMS

    hi guys, ive a new 2010 mac pro 5,1 8 core [2x 2.4 ghz ] 12gb
    My ram is as follows, 2 x 4gb modules +4 x 1 gb modules [DDR3 ECC 1066mghz]
    and all slots are full.
TodayI just purchased two 8gb modules, and now no matter what order of slots i put them in, I can only register the 2 x 8gb chips 16gb of memmory that I juts put in, even if the other slots have 4gb ram modules in them, they dont show up in sysytem, prefs[thats after many flashing power light issues and changing slots] they show up as empty dimm slots in system prefes???
have I exceeded my maximum ram with this machine it is now 2 x 8gb chips = 16gb ????
or do I have to buy 2x 8gb modules to replace my
2 x 4gb modules which are instaled but not now not showing up ??
If i take the new 16gb chis out, and replace all lsots with my old memmory i get 12 gb no no probs, i just cant seem to get past 16???
any help at all would be appreciated troops
    many thanks in advance

    Hi amoeba23,
I know its too late now, but in your position I would have imported 8GB RAM modules from OWC rather than buy them from Crucial.
Otherwise, I would have waited until Kingston started selling 8GB System Specific RAM modules for 2009/2010 Mac Pros instead.
To the best of my knowledge there is nothing on either the Crucial USA or Crucial UK websites stating that their modules incorporate Apple Specified Thermal Sensors, which probably means that they do not have them, and I would have avoided them for that reason alone.
In contrast the OWC website states that their modules confirm with Apple's specifications in that respect:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1333-memory
Also, there was no benefit in buying 1333MHz modules from Crucial, instead of 1066MHz ones from OWC, because of the limitations of the memory bus speed of your Mac Pro model.
For anything smaller than 8GB RAM modules I always advise UK enquirers to buy Kingston System Specific memory for 2009/2010 Mac Pros, because their modules are manufactured to Apple specifications, including thermal sensors. Personally, I use nothing but Kingston RAM, which has been 100% trouble-free for me, and because I know that their System Specific range of memory has been thoroughly tested for compatibility before being released for sale. Plus there are numerous resellers of Kingston System Specific RAM in the UK.
In addition, and very recently, there were several reports of problems with Crucial's 4GB RAM modules in 2009 Mac Pros, and Crucial UK admitted that they were not compatible, and had to issue refunds.
That is another reason that I would have steered clear of their 8GB modules.
Unfortunately, Kingston do not yet market System Specific 8GB RAM modules for Mac Pros. Quite probably this is because Apple do not sell them, and have not yet officially approved this capacity for use in their Mac Pros. I say this because Kingston did not start selling 4GB RAM modules for 2009 Mac Pros until around about the same time that Apple did.
    Regards,
    Bill

  • New RAM install

I'll be getting my new iMac 27 inch today and it comes with stock 8GB RAM. I have also ordered for Crucial 16GB RAM kit and with the total 24GB RAM, what would be the best order for these 4 sticks to be inserted for optimum performance?

now have 2 GB chips in all 4 slots - total 8 GB. Imac mid 2011 I5 core
I want to change 2 of them to 4 GB chips - total 12 Gb.
Do I put the 4 GB chips in the upper or lower slots?
I don't know how the slots are numbered, just upper and lower.

  • New ram, install in upper or lower slot? Any difference

    Hi
I have just purchased a 1GB of ram.
I already have a 512MB which is installed on the lower slot. I have installed the 1GB on the upper slot and it works, just because it was easier.
I was wondering if it makes a difference for performances if the biggest chipis set up in the lower or upper slot.
    Many thanks

    Hi, lune. No, it doesn't.

  • Kernel panic issue after new RAM installed

I upgrade to Crucial, (2) 2GB matched sticks, and I've had a kernel panic twice, within Safari. Screen came down saying the computer needed to restart (was a translucent black box, multiple languages) Funny it never happened running Pro Tools loaded with some intensive plug ins, just Safari while surfing. I had this happen once, maybe twice before, before the RAM upgrade, but not this close together. I have the error log, but don't see a place to upload it on here.

It is possible that it is actually the Main Logic Board. Perhaps even a graphics card that is causing the problem. I would take it back and be sure to mention the squares that pop up.

  • HP Pavilion G6 Notebook PC - Continuously turns on and off after new ram is inserted repetitively

I have just installed another 4 gb of ram making it 8 gb. It works fine the first time it has started up with the new ram but when it has been turned off with the new ram installed for at least 30 minutes it just refuses the ram and just turns on and off repetitively. I have to take out the new ram and turn on the computer on to get it running again. Once it has had a full start up without the new ram I can insert the new ram again but then this problem consists.

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.
