New RAM - is it worth it?

I have a MacBook Pro, 2.53ghz, but am investigating upgrading from 4 to 8gb. Graphics from, say, Other World Computing, suggest that the performance increase might be modest; but I'd like to know the effect of 8gb RAM on boot times, and performance.
Generally, would a 8gb upgrade be worth it? In what ways?
Thanks!!

Adding RAM will lengthen your boot time from a cold shutdown, because all the RAM is tested during that process (but not during a Restart).
More RAM will only benefit you if the work you do requires more RAM than you have. To find out whether more RAM would actually benefit you at all, use your machine as you normally do for three days or longer, putting it to sleep whenever you aren't using it (don't shut it down during this time). Then open Activity Monitor, click the System Memory tab, and compare the Page Ins and Page Outs figures tht are reported below that tab. If Page Outs are more than about 10% of Page Ins, your work would benefit perceptibly from adding RAM. The higher the percentage, the greater the performance boost would be. If Page Outs are zero or much less than 10% of Page Ins, you would gain little or no performance from additional RAM, and you should save your money.

  • Installed New Ram

I just installed 4GB's worth of new Ram on my MacPro at the Office. I originally had two 512MBs for a total of 1gb. I bought (2) 2GB sticks and installed them myself. They work great, but I was wondering if my computer would run faster if I moved the 2GB's where the 512's are and moved the 512's to the back.
I didn't notice much difference in rendering time in FCP 5.1. The system profiler does recognize the ram, telling me I have 5GBs of ram.
    I'm running dual 2.66ghz and Tiger 10.4.10

Thanks a lot for the response. I'm not very tech savvy.. so if this helps any, here it how my ram is aligned per apple report:
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1, 512 MB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2, 512 MB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
Are they in the correct risers? Or if I moved the (2) 2GBS from 3&4, to, 1&2, then moved the 512's to risers 3&4, would I see a speed difference?
Thanks again.. sorry if I seem stupid.

  • Satellite L30 10Y doesn't boot with new RAM modules

    Hi,
just regged with this forum as I am having a memory upgrade problem.
I have read through a few of the memory problems on here and all users say its a comaptible memory issue. I had Hynix 512MB RAM in my laptop and I purchased 2 x 1GB of Hynix memory both of these are matching sticks to the installed memory but when I installed them my laptop wouldnt boot at all. It would only boot if I had one stick in at a time.
I tried switching top and btm ports and even when one stick was installed it says in XP, Vista and Windows 7 (yes I have tried all systems) 896MB available. I even tried using my other Hynix stick but it only booted and showed the highest stick of 1GB (896MB usable in Windows 7). After reading all the threads I'm just wondering if this is a hardware fault or is there a fix in the Toshiba world or perhaps in the Toshiba world the L series is nearly obselete and not worth the bother to help out the people who unwittingly bought thier merchandise.
I apologise for being a bit down on Toshiba but a laptop which states what it can run and doesnt a company should hold its hand up and say yes there is a fault and help deal with the problem.

You are seeing 896MB because the rest is reserved for the Graphics Card VRAM.
Sometimes RAM can simply be not compatible, due to timing incompatibilities or RAM chip/controller design differences.

  • New ram dilema!

Ok here's the deal. I got 2 nforce boards. One is an MSI K7N2 Delta -ILSR rev 2 and I got an 8RDA+ rev 2. I have given my 8rda to my wifes system and put her an xp2800 barton in but its running Crucial 2100 and is a bottleneck cos it cant do the 333fsb. I got an xp3000 400fsb cpu in the Delta with 2 x 512 3200 Twinmos with winbond chips I know this ram works ok dual in both mobos but struggles with aggressive timings when running @its rated speed 200 fsb
I want to put my Twinmos into my wifes system and get some new ram for my Delta but dunno what to buy. I know I could always go buy a pack of 3200 twinmos dual and I think its abouts £133 for it, but they way I look at it is that if I am spending any money then I want a performance boost on my system at the same time. I am thinking about some 3500-4000 ddr ram but am worried that what I buy may not work in this delta, I have read the memory sticky up top but it dont seem like many people have posted about much in the way of above DDR3200.
    Any ideas anyone please?
    Cheerz

Maybe a Corsair TwinX kit? Great stuff if you want aggressive settings. I have 2x512 XMS 3200 modules running atm in my K7N2 Delta ILSR.
You could also get the TwinX 3200LL (Low Latency) modules, which are a bit more expensive than the straight 3200, but are rated to run at 2-3-2-6 at 200FSB.
Personally, I think the straight 3200 would be fine, as I've got mine running better than specced - 2-3-2-5 (3200 rated at 2-3-3-6 at 400FSB)
Getting 3500 may also be a good idea if you plan to overclock (as you're already on a 400FSB, but certainly wouldn't need any faster ram), if you don't, it's not worth it. Just get some nice 3200 stuff.
    Hope that helps!

  • New RAM problems with my Dual G4 1.25 MDD

Howdy I've had my Dual G4 1.25 MDD for 2 years and love it. I got it with 1GB RAM, thinking I was set. For Christmas I wanted to Upgrade the RAM to 2GB. from My PowerMac G4 Manual I knew I needed 2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's.
I went to DealRam (part of DealMac) and found 18004memory.com The price seemed great $39 per stick. I ordered it and within a week got 2x 512MB DIMM's. Problem was it was the Wrong RAM spec. I tried that RAM in my Mac 30 different ways and Everytime the computer either wouldn't boot, or it would suffer Kernel Protection Faults. One time it did boot up but the RAM only recognized as 2x 256MB DIMM's. I called the company, got an RMA and returned the RAM, this time they sent me 2 replacement DIMM's.... for a POWERBOOK, SO-DIMM's. I returned it again and finally Got from them the
2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's. They call it Hyperspeed RAM. Anywho, I powered down let the system cool over night and in the morning, popped it open, put the RAM in the 2 open slots DIMM2/J23 & DIMM3/J20. closed it back up and powered up. Everything was snappier, the boot was quicker and I checked About this Mac, it says 2GB. Apple System Profiler showed all 4 DIMM's and I thought everything was fine.
Computer ran great for hours, no issues. Everything seemed quicker. Computer went to sleep overnight, next day woke from sleep and Tried to use iTunes and during an extensive sort for Songs, the system Locked up. Nothing would work. Had to force restart. this time I tried to Run my favorite online Game, WoW and after it loaded and I started to play, within 5 mins the whole game locked up. The audio sound went into a sort of Loop, I couldnt force quit and had to force reboot. This happened several times. I finally decided to Run the Apple Hardware Test. The Quick test locked up after running 2mins. I let it sit for 1hr just in case it was still doing something and the progress bar and time never progressed. So i forced reboot, ran Test again this time as Extended test. at 8 min & 31 sec the test stopped and I got an Error Code, this time I wrote it down "2MEM/2/4: DIMM3/J20."
I guess that DIMM failed. I shutdown, popped open case, and removed DIMM3/J20 leaving the Original 1GB RAM and One of the 512MB Upgrades. I rstarted the Test again and Ran the Extended Test once more. It ran for 27mins & 24 secs and everything passed. So. 1.5GB is better than just 1GB. I powered down and powered back up to try and play WoW. Within 5 mins of loading game to play, everything locked up again.
So I took both of the new RAM out and left the Original 1GB RAM and ran Test everything was great no Errors. Rebooted, and went onto WoW again and was able to play for several hours. I quit game and shut down for night.
I have since Tried the 2x 512MB DIMM's in over 10 different variations in the computer with and without the original RAM and everytime I run a high end program or game (WoW, iTunes, and Photoshop), I get lock ups, crashes, and other screen weirdness.
I dont want to have to Return the Memory again. I am already out over $15 from s/h with RMA's.
PLEASE Any ideas what to do?
1 thing I noticed the RAM gets very very hot, when I've powered down tand removed the new RAM. I wonder if there is a cooling issue?
Anytime I put the Original 1GB RAM in, I dont have problems!

    Hi lz3broc,
Sounds very much like faulty RAM to me, I'm afraid. I'm not sure about the temperature it's running at, but if the surrounding DIMMs aren't having a problem then I would definitely point the finger at those new memory sticks not being up to scratch.
If you were convinced it was temperature related then you could always try putting heat spreaders on the memory to help with cooling, but as these stick (semi-permanently) to the RAM then you would never be able to return them.
My personal opinion is that you should send the RAM back and buy two new DIMMs from Crucial Technology. I only ever buy RAM made by them and I've never had a problem with it - it's the same stuff Apple themselves generally use and works a charm every time. Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but that's probably the only way you're going to get a stable machine with 2GB RAM.
    Hope that helps,
    Andy.

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.

  • Installed new RAM now computer wont start up

I just installed 2GB of RAM in my iMac and removed the 512mb card it had originally.when i pressed the power button it beeps fast a few time then the fan starts working really fast. The screen doesnt turn on only the sleep light blinks as the fan runs. I replaced one of the new cards with the original 512mb card and it starts but when i check the memory the slot where the new 1GB card appears "empty" why could this be? did i install incorrectly?

When you install new RAM you have to push much harder than you think you should. You won't damage the RAM, but you have t give a mighty push to seat it, make sure you hear a click.

  • Kernel Panic Message...Caused by new RAM???

Hey guys, just purchased 2x1gb ram from otherworldcomputing.com for my powerbook G4, im currently running the latest version I can possibly run which is 10.5.8  Everything seemed great when I put the RAM in, seemed like my computer was running pretty fast campared to the 512gb that came with the computer.  All of a sudden, while im searching the web, it throws that kernel panic message up at me.  I restarted and a few minutes later while im still on the web, bam, the same message.
I am currently in safe mode while Im writing this and nothing has happened yet(update:a few mintues after I finished typing this thread I received the same message, I have turned the computer off and jumped on my wiftes computer to type this I am thinking about putting the original 512mg ram back in to see if I get the message again)
Wierd, the first few days witht the new RAM everything seemed fine and then all of a sudden I got those messages.  I have never had the problem ever before so it makes sense that its gotta be the new RAM right?  Here are my specs

To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.

  • Power Mac G5 Refuses to start with new RAM!

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz June 2004. I know I read somewhere online that it takes 1GB sticks of RAM, and that it has to be dual channel. I went to Best Buy today and got myself 2 sticks of 1GB DDR PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz" Dimms, and installed them in pairs. When I start them with or without my old memory, my mac starts up, makes no noises, but the fromt white LED light blinks 2 times, and does this repeadedly until I shutdown and install the old 512MB sticks. I need to get this new RAM to work in here, I just paid $112 total for 2 sticks, and I am not ready to go back to the store yet. Is there something I am missing here? Something I am not doing right?
    New RAM Specs:
    1GB DDR Dimm,Q PNY Technologies, PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz"
I need to get this to work on my machine! Thanks for any help.

Is there something I am missing here?
Not all RAM is created equal and seldom does over the counter PC RAM work in a G5.
Buy and install ONLY guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.

    BTW, you paid too much.
When I start them with or without my old memory, my mac starts up, makes no noises, but the fromt white LED light blinks 2 times,
    That means "Incompatible RAM types".

  • Random restarts and freezes. Just upgraded my RAM trying to diagnose new RAM as the problem but they pass Rember test.

Hey so I have been dealing with random reboots and computer freezes since upgrading my RAM. I also reinstalled my 10.8.2 at the same time I upgraded my RAM. I have a Mac Mini Mid 2011 with the OWC Data Doubler Kit and a Crucial M4 128GB Boot drive. My computer reboots every 30 minutes or so and sometimes completely freezes up. I am trying to figure out if the new RAM is the issue as I can send them back. I have ran several Rember RAM tests but the computer freezes mid test so I can not see the issue. All other times it completeles the RAM test with no issues.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

  • My new RAM doesn't work with my iMac.

    Hello,
I bought new RAM 4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM to installed in my iMac 3.4 GHz intel core i7, osx lion.
I try to installed it alone without original RAM (2GB * 2 pcs) installed to check how it works.
After press start button, there are 3 beep sounds and iMac won't start.
I try to reset PRAM follow the instruction, but it won't work.  Because there are 3 beep sounds alarm immediately after press start.
Does my RAM have a problem?

My iMac has 4 memory slots and I try to installed one by leave 3 slots empty.
By the way this is the 2nd ram I purchased from OWC with same spec as the last one (also same as link above) but different in purchase date (about 2 weeks different).
So now I have 2 GB *2 pcs (come with iMac) and 4GB * 2 pcs from OWC.
So I'm quit sure that this ram is compatible with my iMac because the first one is work.
    But I have some notice,
For the 1st RAM I bought from OWC (4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM), when first installation it also didn't work. I can't start iMac. And after 2 weeks, I try to installed it to my iMac again, now it can operate as normal.  What do you think about it?

  • New ram not showing up in MacPro 1,1

I bought new ram for an old MacPro 1,1 and only the old ram shows up. I know the new ram works as I can start my computer with each individual stick but they wont work together. Any idea? I can move my old 512chips to any slot and it works so I’ve ruled out bad slots. The new ram chips work but only one shows up. I have switched them out too and both work so Ihave know idea what’s going on. Hope someone can help.
    Thanks in advance.

Brand A and B not working together or even same but from different batches, can happen.
Each SET will work fine, you can't do "individually".
I've seen people use A1:B1 and A3:B3 which is not supported, yet has worked.
Or all RAM on top Riser.
As far as I know the Risers are interchangeable, there is no "A" and "B" other than "top" and "bottom" and some have had to do an advance exchange and get a new Riser sent out under AppleCare.
Get out your OEM 10.4.7 discs and one of them has Apple Hardware Test, use "command-D" with the DVD in the tray.
No, you don't need a battery.
It just sounds like a defective set. You bought OWC, Crucial, Kingston, Mac Pro certified (and large RAM heatsinks) then just contact seller and have them send them back as DOA.

  • Installed new Ram = 3 Beeps

Hello! I wanted to max out my iMac (7,1) with RAM so I bought a couple new chips from Other World Computing. It came yesterday and I went home all excited to install it. I did, and on startup all I get is three beeps repeating endlessly. I opened the slot back up and made sure they were seated well and they were. Same thing. Put the old RAM back in and it started fine. Gah! How disappointing and frustrating!
Here is the RAM I got:
    2GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
    4GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Through an a separate email inquire with OWC, I got this response:
+The 3 beeps from your Mac indicate it doesn't see any memory. This is not uncommon as Apple's RAM is a slight bit thinner than third-party modules, and as such, our modules need an a bit extra pressure to fully seat them into their rather tight socket.+
+See if the modules can go another 1/8th inch (3mm) into the socket.+
I'm pretty sure I seated the new RAM properly, but I'll make sure to check that as well.
