New Retina MBP, user upgradeable SSD drive?

can you upgrade/swap out the SSD drive on the new retina MBP?

judging by pictures and the internet and verbiage from Apple itself these are NOT replacable.
along with the MacBook AIR the retina MBP is "Flash Storage",
NOT "HDD" or "SDD" like the non-retina MBP is.
http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/13-and-15-inch/ specifically states "rpm hard drive" or "solid state drive"
http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/ specifically states "flash storage" along with how the AIR is defined. and ive never read anywhere about being able to replace the flash storage on an AIR.

  • Can't update iPhoto/ iMovie in App Store. New Retina MBP.

I have just purchased a new Retina MBP. App store wont let me update iPhoto/ iMovie because I'm not logged in with account that purchased the apps. I tried the 2 apple id's I have and no luck. Any advice? Thanks.

if you opened the app store. and logged in with both accounts and it didn't allow you to download the app.  should say download.  if not you will have to pay.  no way to see unless you have an old email from when you did.

  • New Retina MBP Doesn't See Time Capsule

Just purchased a new retina MBP and have 2 probems with it.
    1.  It doesn't see my Time Capsule, when using Airport Utility it states that 'no configured airport base stations have been found'.  I also have an iMac which sees the TC ok.
    2.  I did a superduper backup of my old MBP but set up the new MBP as a new machine just importing the applications from the backup using Migration assistant.  Because of the problem in item 1 above I tried to start up using the external backup but failed. The new MBP cannot startup on the backup disk (Freeagent GoFlex 1TB) even though it's shown as an optional startup in the settings.  When trying to startup from it the machine just goes to a black screen and does nothing.
    So far, not too impressed.
    Regards

    1. Yesterday my mbp-r was unable to find my AP extreme base station in Airport Utility, even though the network seemed to be functioning perfectly. Rebooted the mbp-r (not painful given the speed), and now all is well with Airport Utility. Mysterious, but it worked.
    2. Does superduper clone the recovery partition? (I think I read somewhere it doesn't.) And if not, can you boot from such a clone? IIRC, Carbon Copy Cloner can produce a recovery partition.

  • Skype issues with new Retina MBP

Help - I have a new Retina MBP with the latest version of Skype. I am having serious issues with Skype -anyone I call on landlines keep telling me my voice is "breaking up" - I can hear them perfectly. A skype test call works OK, calling my own land line seems to be OK, but all calls from Australia to US land lines experinece this issue. (I thought is was my router so had Telstra replace it - talk about good customer service - it was replaced no questions asked). Same version of Skype on my 5+ year old MBP still works OK (of course it is not running the latest version of Moutain Lion as it does not support this version).
The Skype community forum reports various issues with MBPs but not this particular one. I would go to the Apple Genius Bar but they don't really provide support for thirdy party apps. Note I am using the built-in speaker and microphone.
All suggestions most welocme - I really need to get this sorted before my next trip.
    thanks.

Please,  run the DirectX diagnostics tool.
Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.
Be aware that you will have to zip this file before attaching it here.

  • New Retina MBP + Windows 7 boot camp = no nVidia GPU

I'm hoping someone will correct me wrong on this...
    I have a brand new 15" Retina MBP 2.6GHz 16GB RAM 500 SSD.
After finally getting Windows 7 SP1 installed (along with countless updates ) and boot camp 4.0, I have noticed some display problems.  My only reslution options are: 1600x1200 (which looks stretched), 1280x1024 (reallly stretched), and  lesser resolutions with which I didn't bother.  This didn't seem to make sense given the nVidia 650M.
Also, NONE of the external video ports are working (Thunderbolt to DisplayPort, HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI) -- they're simply not getting a signal at all.
So I went into device manager, and the 650M is not even showing up as being installed!  All I see is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter", which tells me Windows is only acknowledging the integrated Intel graphics.
I can't simply install an nVidia driver, as it can't see the device onto which that driver would be applicable.
I assumed this was an issue of the "automatic graphics switching."  Apple confirmed this, telling me that Windows doesn't have an option to choose between displays.  I couldn't find a way to trigger it with any third party app, either (including Adobe After Effects).
Further, Apple claims 64-bit drivers aren't yet available for this GPU, so even if I could switch it over, I'd have to step down to a 32-bit install.
So, basically, my boot camp side looks like a netbook.
I cannot be the only one experiencing this!
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

You can't install the windows support software before you partition. 1. Start boot camp in OS X and create the windows support CD; 2. Install windows using boot camp; 3. Install windows support software from the CD that you made.
I followed the boot camp manual exactly and the Nvidia drivers were not installed. I had to go into the Nvidia drivers directory in the windows support CD and manually run the setup.exe file. After that, the drivers were installed.
Note: when you create your windows partition in boot camp, you will select custom, and then format. It is critical that you format your boot camp partition and not your OS X partition. It will not say boot camp, but you can tell it's the right one by its size. For example, if you selected a 40 GB size for boot camp, the size of the drive you select to format should be 40 GB.

That is exactly what I said, are you sure you wanted to reply to me?
FYI, In a normal Bootcamp installation the partition will be named Bootcamp

  • How do you configure the Retina MBP with larger SSD? FW800-to-TB?

The Apple site shows a line that says you can configure it up to 768 I think. But then there is no option on the config page. 256 is not going to cut it even just for programs.
Having to wait for FW800-to-TB adapters is also asinine. Many of us have our whole lives on FW drives. The adapter should launch with the box.
There is also no option for a true anti-glare screen which was a major draw for me; anyone know if the Retina MBP screen is anti-glare? Glossy is not for me or my work.
    Thanks ----
    jf

First, you need everything transferred from the SSD to the HDD including OS X. Boot from the SSD. Open Users & Groups preferences. Cllick on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account in the list. Select Advanced Options. Click on the Choose button to the right of the field labeled, Home dir:. Locate your user folder on the HDD (/HDD/Users/your_user_folder/. Click on the Open button. You must restart your computer.
After restart you will be booting from the SSD but using the Home folder that is located on the HDD. You can now delete the contents of your user folder on the SSD. This should be limited to the contents of the Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders. This should free up considerable space on the SSD.

  • Multiple problems with new retina iMac. Suspect graphics driver

New retina IMac, top spec, with latest Yosemite, and additional Cinema Display attached. Having multiple problems which I suspect are being caused by the graphics driver:
The long running issue with Adobe PS whereby under certain size options the tools cursor disappears and just has the arrow cursor.
With no warning, after doing an action such as opening an application the system reverts immediately to the login screen and does not show me as logged in.
After switching users, a blank screen other than the cursor is shown. Seems I have to power off to get past this one.
Can anybody shed any light on any of these, at least so that I can discount my theory of a single culprit?

So I went onto the Adobe forums and found a number of threads on this subject. A staff member replied with the following:
It's a video card driver bug introduced in MacOS 10.10 (which looks a lot like an old bug they fixed in 10.9).
Apple is aware of this, and the other video driver issues in 10.10, and working on solutions.
So thanks to Adobe we now know.

  • Installing CS5 on new Retina MBP

Hi, I have a new Retina Macbook Pro and I want to install my version of CS5 on it, but since I don't have a disc drive, I've run into a few problems.
What I was able to do was copy the installation files onto a flash drive and start the installation that way, however, halfway through, the installation prompts me to insert a second disc, which I have, but I can't insert because...no disc drive. The second disc contains the Content (PDFs, Documentation, Fonts, etc.) so there's no direct way to prompt that installation. I tried putting this on a second flash drive and inserting it when "second disc" needs to be inserted, but this doesn't work. Do I need an external disc drive, or is there another way?
    Thanks!

I think what I meant to say was "optical drive" instead of "disc drive". Am I still understanding you correctly? I don't know why I would need an external hard drive for this.

  • [SOLVED] New install does not see SSD drive

Ok, I have a DFI motherboard which at first did not recognize my new Intel SSD drive I have installed. After updating the BIOS, it now correctly recognizes it. However when I run the 2009.2 cd and try to prepare the drives, it does not show any drives listed?
    /sbin/fdisk -l
does not show any drives either so it looks like arch cant see any installed HD's which makes since, but the motherboard does show the new Intel SSD as a Sata drive right under my DVD player?
    Any help?
Edit: I hooked up my old Seagate drive and it shows up fine. Any idea on why this SSD is not playing nice?
Solved: I have come to the conclusion this has nothing to do with the Arch install, but is simply a hardware issue with my motherboard. I installed the SSD drive in my wifes pc, it seen the ssd as a sata drive while booting, it seen it when arch was initializing, it seen it when I did a fdisk, and when i finally tried to install, it was there too!!
So there must be some issue with my old DFI MB. I will work on that or upgrade..Thanks to everyone who helped out...

I had trouble with my throttle device not making contact with the data lines when connected to USB.
I assume the SSD has the same connector as the motherboard and the cable can be reversed end to end to test for performance.
I use a multimeter to verify the presence of power to the device.
Sata cables are known to be flaky.
Throttle devices use 5vdc power from USB connector and are connected to esata cables at the same time since sata ports do not supply power.  The connections for throttle are on opposite ends of the device.
I am not familiar with the SSD power setup but assume it is 5vdc as well.
    No other suggestions here..................
Yes, the cable should be able to be reversed as the ssd drives are identical compared to normal sata drives in respect to the cable connections: one sata data connection and one power. I will try some different cables and see if that helps. I did try a new port on the mb which did not work, and when i used the current cables on my older seagate drive it worked fine

  • New retina MBP - Just set it up

I've just set up my new MBPr. Transferred all my data from my beloved late 2008 MBP. How long should I keep it around for? Has anyone had hard drive failure on these things?
Are these flash drives in the MBPr reliable?
    Thanks!

well, since they're quite new, i don't think you'll get an answer right away....
i do however, own several macbooks with SSD in them and they've been quite reliable....
your retina macbook came with a Samsung 830 series flash storage/drive which are quite reliable...

  • Kernel Panics in brand new Retina MBP running Mavericks

    Hello!
So I recently purchased a new MBP from the most recent updated line. It's less than a week old, and was purchased to replace another MBP that had serious hardware issues and near constant kernel panics. After waiting months for the updated line to once again have a working laptop, I'm quite dismayed that tonight I have experienced two kernel panics that have crashed an restarted my new computer. During both panics, I was running both Chrome and VLC. The first happened as I clicked the Chrome icon in the dock and the second one happened right after I started playing a video in VLC and went into fullscreen.   Unfortunately there are no available appointments at the Genius Bar tomorrow, and I won't be able to book an appointment I can actually make it to until next weekend. I was hoping someone might be able to offer me some insights into what might be causing this?

    Thanks in advance!

I also got a Kernel panic today while playing a video inside VLC. It happened while I was double clicking inside the video. I have an identical MBP 15 (16GB RAM):
Maybe there's a bug in switching the GPU while going to full screen? I hope it's not a HW problem. Please let me know what your "Genius" told you :-)

  • How can I install Windows 7 on a Retina MBP with no optical drive?

I'd like to install Windows 7 on a Retina MacBook Pro via Boot Camp.
However, the only distribution of Windows I'm aware of is on a physical disk.
My MBP doesn't have an optical drive. It can't read disks like that.
I'm hoping there's some kind of workaround here, because I'd hate to spend money on an external optical drive I'm only going to use once.
Does Microsoft offer a way to buy Windows 7 via a download?
If so, can I then copy the downloaded installer that onto an external USB hard drive and install from there?
Or is the only option to buy an external optical drive? (If that's the case, any guidance on which one to buy -- can I get away with a generic one or do I need to shell out $80 for Apple's "Superdrive?")
I actually have another Mac that does have an optical drive. Could that help me out somehow?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

You can follow the instructions here to copy your installation disc over to a USB jump drive: http://lifehacker.com/5347382/wintoflash-turns-your-windows-installation-dvd-int o-a-usb+based-installer

  • 3 dents on bottom of brand new Retina MBP?

After one day with only regular use. Is this normal? What is causing it? I have Apple care and will probably get it fixed tomorrow but I want to know if anyone has seen this before.

After one day with only regular use.
You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your MBP w/no questions asked!!!!

  • Com.apple.mdworker.pool.0: I/O error : encoder error on new Retina MBP

Why does the system log show lots and lots (i.e. once per second) of this error? How do I stop it?
    Cheers

one more bit of context for problem just posted: often the Mail app will start downloading a lot of messages, sometimes 20, or 200, or 1500+, and the progress bar will show them downloading, but when it's finished, there's no change to the number of messages that appear in my Inbox. I have a few different email accounts, all set up to use IMAP. The Mail > Windows menu > Connection Doctor shows all green lights for my accounts, nothing to troubleshoot.
Okay, that's all the background I can think of.
Thanks for any help with this!

  • New (Oct. 2013) retina MBP. Can I boot to Mountain Lion on external drive?

    Hi there,
I edit in my office with a Mac Pro (2010) desktop, but occasionally I have to edit out of office.  My trusty old 2008 MacBook Pro just died, so I've ordered a new retina MBP.  It will come loaded with Mavericks.  The problem is that my editing software (Avid Media Composer) is always an OS release or two behind, and Media Composer doesn't run properly (yet) with Mavericks.
So... here's my question.  I've got a 250Gb SSD that I can put in an external enclosure.  I could install Mountain Lion on this SSD, and then install Avid.
Then, on those occasions when I need to edit out of office with my new retina MBP, I would boot up to this drive.
Does this sound good?  Will the new retina MBP work run on Mountain Lion?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Malcolm

You might be able to depending on the exact version of Mt Lion you have on that external. The newest iMacs originally got shipped with a special version of Mt Lion 10.8.4 (right not even the newest release of Mt Lion) that included the proper driver package for the new hardware. If you had a copy of that your new 2013 MBP might boot from it. But since you have a copy from a 2010 model I doubt it would. The only way to tell is TRY IT. No harm will come to your new MBP if it doesn't.
