New "Rookie" Spotlight Award

I'm pleased to announce our new "Rookie" Spotlight Award.  The first awardee will be recognized in October.
Rookie Award:   This award is intended to recognize our new members who actively  contribute to the Cisco Support Community.  The award is calculated as  follows:
-We take the current award month and look at all new CSC registrants 4 months prior.
-Of those members, we then sum all their CSC contributions for the 3 months leading up to the award month.
-The member who has added the most content (discussions, replies, documents, videos)  earns the Rookie Award.
As  an example, a new user registers for CSC in the month of January.  That  user would be eligible for the May Rookie Award.  To win, that user  would need to create the most combined content of all the new January  CSC registrants during the months of February, March, and April.
Please visit our Spotlight Awards page for more information on the Program.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan & Tom,
Love the new "Rookie" Spotlight award idea
Just one concern;
"The member who has added the most content (discussions, replies, documents, videos)  earns the Rookie Award"
Shouldn't a "quality over quantity" consideration be given here as well?
Just my 2 cent$
Cheers!
Rob

Hello Dan, I hope you're well.
Why does it say 'unanswered questions' rather than questions answered, or is it a totally different award?
It is like the opposite almost!

Why do you need to register to SCN to read the content?  My assumption is that you want as many readers as possible to view your content - including individuals who aren't SCN members.
Your blog doesn't even appear in the list of content for that section of SCN.
I'm a registered user and still can't access it. I only know of its existence from an email that I receive when new content is published in the Cloud section of SCN.
I'd like to refer to your document in an upcoming blog and that currently isn't possible because it isn't publicly available.

  • New Spotlight? Questions

Unlike the spotlight in 10.4, the new leopard spotlight does not retain the sorting categories when I click on "Show all", it just gives me a rather large list of the things i searched for, but not organized. Is there anyway to make the results still be in apps, music, movies, etc categories when clicking on show all?
And also, spotlight doesn't seem to search in the preferences folders either. Is it possible to make spotlight search even in preferences and the Library folder?

You can refine the search in the resulting "Show All" window by adding filters with the little "+" button. As for the categories view, that's only available in the spotlight menu. Unfortunately, Apple as limited spotlight to user-created documents, and this does not include the preferences folder(s). I would like it if Apple would allow for custom inclusions in the spotlight indexing, but for now they only have a predetermined list.

    Hi,
You can try a simple reset on the printer
remove power cord from the rear of the printer  (unit is on), press cancel button and plug back the power cable and keep holding the cancel button. Leave the cancel button when the LEDs does not longer blinking/flash.
also you can reinstall the drivers if the reset doesnt help.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Spotlight doesnt' index

On both my old iBook and my new iMac, Spotlight doesn't work on the HDs (but works on any connected USB drive), Google Desktop doesn't work either ("no indexing"). Putting/deleting the HDs in the privacy part of Spotlight Preferences doesn't change anything...
Cocktail <http://cocktail.en.softonic.com/mac> says "unable to detect Spotlight indexing status. iBook is not accessible, read-only or mdutil (/usr/bin/mdutil) is not working properly."
Is there any Terminal lines of code that could explore/change Spotlight behaviour? I tried "mdutil -pEsa [-i on] volume /" without any success...

I just happen to find a solution: Spotlight is currently indexing my HD!
    Here is the solution
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7063635> :
I have tried most of the recommendations here - and finally even reinstalled and rolled back my entire PB from Time Machine this night - but Spotlight did not work. Got message in terminal "Indexing and searching disabled".
Solution found on web - below with 2 elements:
    1) Need to remove files that block for indexing
    2) Turn on indexing - Thanks to Patrick Kinsella
    1) Check your root directory for a file called ".metadataneverindex"
    If it's there, delete it.
You can only find it after making invisible files visible (se below)
    2) These great hints won’t work if Spotlight is completely disabled (which some people have tried and don’t know how to reverse). If all else fails, follow this procedure:
Make hidden files visible (copy and paste the next line into Terminal:"defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES" [or use Onyx or alikes]
!!!You need to know that the visible/invisible switch works only after a relaunch of Finder (via Command-Alt-Esc).
Now in (previously hidden) /etc folder in your root/hard drive, find "hostconfig~", and open it with any text editor. Does it include this line:"SPOTLIGHT=-YES-" (note the two dashes astride YES)? If not, type this line at the bottom. Save the file as "hostconfig~" in your root folder (etc folder won’t accept it from a text editor). Now drag and drop this new hostconfig to /etc. This requires your admin password to replace the existing "hostconfig~".
Reboot, and your spotlight is working. This may be a long way around, but it worked for me.
Now make invisibles invisible again with this line in Terminal: "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO" [or use Onyx or alikes]
To fire up Spotlight, you may need to type this into Terminal: "sudo mdutil -i on /" (the slash is important)
If Mail is still not searching inside Entire Message, type this into Terminal to index your old messages:"sudo mdimport /users/YOURNAME/library/mail [or whatever the path to your mailbox message folders]".
The combination of these two did the trick for me.

  • Spotlight has a dim bulb - help!

I have two problems with spotlight.
When I click on the blue icon in the menu bar, I get a spinning rainbow wheel for a minute or so, and nothing else happens.
When I press Cmd-F to bring up the Spotlight window and do a search, Spotlight can only find a fraction of the relevant documents.
Example: in a folder called PPP, I have more than 100 files with the word "Jade" as part of the name of the file. I told Spotlight to look in PPP for files whose name contains "Jade". Spotlight found exactly three documents - even after I clicked the button to have it search again.
Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss a Spotlight software update? Or, when I bought Tiger (ten days ago) did I pay retail price for beta software? (I intentionally waited several months before buying Tiger so that I would not be paying retail price for beta software.) This is frustrating. Spotlight is the only new feature in Tiger that has any value to me, and it isn't working. Apple just took $130 from me and I got zero added-value. The Spotlight program manager should be strung up by his.....

Hey, Tom! Glad to see you're still active! You and I must be a lot alike. I, too, needed fast, reliable searching, have switched back to Panther, and also come here occasionally jus to see what's new with Spotlight. Wonderful concept, poor implementation. Maybe Apple will get it working one of these days. Until then, Panther does everything I need, and more, and with grace and speed.
I can't understand why Apple doesn't take a more active role in fixing Spotlight! I'd go back to Tiger-even with its other problems-in a moment if Spotlight worked. Always been an early adopter but Tiger has soured me; I'm not going to be anxious to move from Panther.
Spotlight was the reason I switched to Tiger. Spotlight was the reason I switched back to Panther!

  • Spotlight indexing causing repeated error in console

    Hi,
I just recently upgraded my mac to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8.  Everything is working fine, except for Spotlight.  I know that upon a new upgrade Spotlight will take a while to index the computer, but it has been hours and in console I am getting two repeated messages.  The first one appears every minute or so:
    Dec  5 15:45:58 marc-cutillos-macbook mds[43]: (/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/164ED999-5DAD-430E-8FD9-79661D539F03)(Error) IndexSDB in si_writeBackDBO:Error 2 storing dbo(c973f5,430,75,4d02111cfd3ea,0,65089c,30)

I have literally hundreds of these messages with the only thing changing is the final numbers before the "30"
The other message I keep getting every half hour or so is the following.  I am listing two of these such messages:
    Dec  5 13:46:29 marc-cutillos-macbook Safari[283]: Periodic CFURLCache Insert stats (iters: 412) - Tx time:0.005208, # of Inserts: 1, # of bytes written: 11474, Did shrink: NO, Size of cache-file: 8409088, Num of Failures: 0

Lastly, I am getting this error a few times also:
Dec  5 15:18:21 marc-cutillos-macbook mdworker[750]: (Error) SyncInfo: Catalog changed during searchfs too many times -- falling back to fsw search /
I have very few 3rd party apps.  I had McAfee but deleted it (although there seems to be some remnants as .plist files) Can anyone let me know of some advice?  I would just force quit the indexng through terminal, but I'm very curious what these constant error messages are.

BTW, I went off some terminal commands that I saw in another discussion thread by Linc Davis:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3185946?start=0&tstart=0
I typed in the commands and this was my result:

  • Spotlight Problem

    Hi everyone,
since Lion i experience problems with Lion and Spotlight in that way, that it finds for example only pdf-files, no calendars, no emails, no pictures....
i work with a user account and
    I tried:
    - repair access rights
    - reindexing by draging the volume in privacy and out
    - reindexing with terminal
    - reset persmission
at least i called Apple Support.
After the procedure above, they finally discribed to me, that my setup SSD (for OS) and HDD (User Account and for data at the place where the optical drive was) is not supported, and that may be the problem. So i build the hole thing back and the problem still exists.
    - when i create a new user spotlight seams to work well.
    - but when i try to access system settings and ical it crashes...
So, maybe my user account is broken and the whole installation....
I thinking about reinstall Lion...but what with my data? Migrate the old user will import the problem again...
Does anyone have a suppestion what else to do?
    Thanks
    -s

Reinstalling lion seems the way to go. Maybe your optical HDD isn't installed correctly as well. Try putting it back and making sure your connection is correct and secure. Further support for this particular setup at www.macsales.com who make a connection like that.
I have not expereinced the issue you described and I too have my OS on an SSD and my home folder on an HDD.
Reinstalling lion is a good idea. Verify and repair your disks in disk utility before proceeding to do so thoug, while in the boot recovery..

  • Spotlight/search weirdness

Since I got my MBP I have transferred a bunch of files. When I search, both via finder-window and Spotlight--it acts as if those files do not exist. Doesn't see them. Nada. This is strange. Any thoughts? Can I execute indexing of these files?

i seem to have the same problem with spotlight as you. i recently used migration assistant to transfer files from my ibook to my new macbook. spotlight is not locating music files that i can find in the finder. another problem im having is with picture files in the finder. iphoto files and picures are not showing when i look for them in the finder-ie:when using email iphoto files are not there. maybe you can run me through what you did, and ill try it. thanks alot.

  • Spotlight is unstoppable

I recently Carbon Copy Cloned a smaller drive to a new larger drive. When I mounted the new drive spotlight began indexing the drive. The drive in incessantly clicking away. I have tried:
    1) Moving the drive to the Privacy Tab in Spotlight
    2) sudo mdutil -i off... command
    3) unmount and remount the drive
    4) restart the system
All to no benefit. As soon as the computer can see the drive it madly returns to its undesired task.
When click on the spotlight icon top right of screen it says "Indexing "drive name" Estimating indexing time - and has said this for a couple if hours now.
How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks

I've been having similar issue, the spotlight is always reindexing, then I deleted the com.apple.spotlight.plist in my library then restarted my computer and still doing it
    Any suggestion?
BTW I can't see any spotlight process name in the Activity monitor.

  • Spotlight only up-to-date after re-indexing

Ever since I got my (Intel) Mac, Spotlight worked like a charm, but indexed new files only after re-indexing by hand. A friend of mine who doesn't have an Intel based Mac, doesn't have any problems; created files are almost immediately indexed by Spotlight.
Although I think it's a real handy tool, it does slow me down since each re-indexing takes about 15 minutes.
Is this a bug in Spotlight (only for Intel) and is this already on the list at Apple? And is there anything I can do to correct this behaviour?

Thanks Daniel, but the Xlab info doesn't cover this exact problem. Since I had this problem ever since I got my Mac out of the box, I am sure I didn't 'mess around the OS' and I certainly didn't use the Terminal (still haven't actually
Could you tell me how the problem got solved for your students?
The strange thing is that external HD's are indexed as soon as they are recognized by the system, but when I save a simple (new) textfile, Spotlight doesn't put the file in its index until I re-index by hand. I don't have any folders in the Privacy-section, nor are the directories hidden or anything.
Today I used Mac Helpmate, but that didn't do anything for this problem.

  • Having some problems with links

OK, I've used this way of doing this for a while, but recently I started having trouble with getting this to work.
I have a site with a link to the organization's current newsletter.  I have a "previous page" link so that you can go back to the page you came from in the main site.  The newsletter opens up in it's own blank page.  This link no longer works and I have no idea why.
This is the code that is supposed to make this link work:  <a href="javascript:history.go(-1);">Previous Page</a>
The second part of the problem involves the left sidebar links which are named achor links for within the newsletter page.  In the newsletter there are usually Program Recap articles which usually include a link to a separate page of event photos.  The page has the same sidebar links to the named anchors.  I used to be able to have these go back to the newsletter page to that named anchor.  But now I can't seem to make them work.
What I've done in the past is to link back to the newsletter and at the end of this link to the page add the named anchor link like this:
    1112Visions_Iss1.html/#prezmessage
Sometimes this works and sometimes not.  The problems don't end there.  Some of these links render the newsletter page with the photos some of the links go to a page that doesn't show the links.  At this point I have re-done all of the links, I have rebooted both Dreamweaver and Firefox and it just keeps doing the same thing.  I'm just baffled by this.
I'll post the code for both pages in the hopes that someone can tell me what is not right and how to make this work.
Here is the code for the newsletter's main page:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

        <p><strong><img src="../images/Susan-Flaherty-photo.jpg" alt="Susan Flaherty" width="145" height="159" class="fltlft" />Dear Fellow HFMA Members,</strong></p>
<p>Welcome to the 2011-2012 HFMA fiscal year. Thank you for your continued membership and support of HFMA.  I look forward to working with the members, the board of directors, and officers during the upcoming year to continue the success of the Northeast Ohio Chapter.  </p>
<p>Speaking of success – I attended the HFMA Annual National Institute in June 2011 and was proud to be from the Northeast Ohio Chapter. Our Chapter won three awards – Gold Award for Membership Growth and Retention, Hottum Award for Education Performance Improvement, and a Yerger Special <img src="../images/Manfull_ANI_DSC_0027.jpg" width="200" height="200" align="top" class="fltrt" />Recognition Award for the February 2011 Patient Financial Services Program.  In addition, the Northeast Ohio Chapter had two of the three winners of the National HFMA Future Financial Leaders Award. The award recognizes those future leaders who provide innovative and exemplary performance resulting in organizational performance improvement. Congratulations to Jill Barber and Kelly Linson from Southwest Community Health System for receiving this award. Finally, as many of you know, National HFMA has performance targets relating to education, membership, certification, financial strength, and other matters for all chapters. Our Chapter achieved 100% during this last fiscal year in meeting these targets. While it is important to celebrate our past successes, I and the other chapter leaders realize that we are taking on a big responsibility to maintain this level of excellence. We will need the continued support and participation of the membership to ensure we continue to achieve this level of success.</p>
<p>As part of planning for the upcoming year, the Chapter officers had the opportunity to meet the National HFMA Chair, Gregory M. Adams, FHFMA. His theme for the fiscal year is “Believe to Achieve.” Following is an excerpt of his comments and explanation of the theme. In health care today, it sometimes seems like we are being asked to do the impossible. The industry is preparing for an influx of millions of newly insured patients in a reform environment where payments are shrinking and expectations around quality are growing. &quot;Believe to Achieve&quot; encompasses the keys to success in this new environment. It reflects the need to believe in your organization's mission and in others who share your dedication to achieving that mission. It means believing in yourself and in your ability to step out of your comfort zone into the new roles and responsibilities required to succeed in the reform era. Last but not least, it means believing in the possibility of a better future. In health care, there have always been naysayers who believe that the problems of the day are just too difficult to overcome. Their voices have been particularly loud, of late. But you can choose to believe that a better future is within reach, and to dedicate your professional life to making that happen. You can only achieve what you believe. </p>
<p>Finally, I want to thank all of you who volunteered your time to Chapter activities over the past year. The fact that you chose to devote part of your time to HFMA indicates the value you perceive in your membership. The strength of any chapter lies in its volunteers. I hope you are able to attend the annual volunteer appreciation outing on August 31, 2011 to celebrate the successes of our Chapter, hear presentations on relevant industry topics, and enjoy a networking round of golf or visit to the spa. We are always looking for members to get involved and continue the long tradition of volunteer service that has been a hallmark of our Chapter for many years. Please don't hesitate to contact me, one of the other Chapter officers or directors, or a committee chair if you are interested in volunteering. </p>
I look forward to a great year and hope to see you at an upcoming HFMA event.
    <p>Sincerely,</p>
    <p>Susan Flaherty<br />

        <h2><strong><a name="certification" id="certification"></a>CHFP Assistance Program</strong></h2>
<p>The North East Ohio Chapter (NEOC) of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) continues to encourage members to pursue and achieve certification as a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP).  </p>
<p>Many members who successfully pass the exam are eligible for reimbursement from their employers for some portion of the examination fee and/or on-line study material fee. To encourage and assist those members for whom employer reimbursement is not available, the Chapter offers a limited financial award program through the Chair of the Certification Committee. <br />
      <br />
      <strong>Current CHFP Award Program</strong> <br />
Effective June 1, 2011, the NEO HFMA Chapter Board has approved annual funding for a maximum of 5 awards of $200.00 each for successful completion of the CHFP exam.  NEO HFMA members who have successfully completed the CHFP exam on or after June 1, 2011 and who will NOT be reimbursed by their employer for any portion of either the examination fee and/or the online study material fee are eligible to apply.  Chapter awards will be issued to the first 5 approved applications.</p>
    <p><strong>Reimbursement Application Procedure </strong> <br />
Upon successful completion of the CHFP exam, a member who will NOT be reimbursed by their employer for any portion of either the examination fee or the on-line study materials may complete and submit an NEO HFMA expense form in application for a financial award.<em>  </em>A copy of the exam result e-mail notification and a release authorizing HFMA National to confirm that the member has passed the exam is required. Application for the award must be made within 8 weeks of receiving exam results. The funds allocated to members will be reviewed annually and is subject to change at the discretion of the Chapter board. </p>

        <h3><strong>2011 GHALI</strong></h3>
        <p><span class="style24">by </span>Lisa Hilling    <span class="style24"><br />
          </span></p>
<p>The 2011 GHALI was held at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. This historic and tradition filled site, initally started as a seminary high school for boys preparing for the priesthood.  In addition, this classic gothic building was built during the years 1930-1931 with the first class starting in late October of 1931. The building contains approximately 167,000 square feet. The Wolstein family purchased the 381 acres of land and building in 1989 that many considered to be one of the most desirable tracts in Stark County.  After two years of renovation, the spa portion of the club opened in December of 1991. On July 1, 1992 Jack Nicklaus took part in the gala celebration which opened the golf course. The Grand Opening of the Clubhouse in September of 1992 followed.<br />
          <br />
Our theme for this year’s event was “Entering the Era of Accountability”.  As a result, the conference included educational sessions led by healthcare industry leaders and a variety of pertinent topics. Highlights included a panel discussion, “How Organizations Develop Vendor Relationships” for which there was standing room only attendance as well as sessions led by prominent professors, politicians and other professionals. Attendees were given opportunities to research products and services present at the vendor booths during vendor fair times and throughout the 2 ½ days. In keeping with tradition, the networking opportunities were abundant, starting out with Wednesday’s always very popular casino night. Thursday’s networking events included your choice of an 18 hole golf scramble, a visit to “The Spa at Glenmoor” or a enjoyable wine tasting event followed by an evening banquet which enable our attendee to sample more of Glenmoor’s fine cuisine. We concluded that evenings events with music, Texas Hold-em and “minute to win-it” activities, as well as entertaining karaoke by our members. <br />

Because I know enough to be dangerous...  I was trying to extend the two outside columns down....  Instead of just using faux columns which I have fixed since I posted the question.
The other link problem is the left sidebar links.  When you go to the event photos page I have a repeat of the sidebar links that are on the newsletter page.  I used named anchors on the newsletter page to link to the particular article.  From the Event Photos page the links look like this:
    <a href="1112Visions_Iss1.html/#puzzle" target="_self">[Puzzle]</a>
The problem I am having is that some of these go to the newsletter page and the anchor and some do not (I get an error message saying it  can't find the page).  To add to the problem is that when we choose say the President's Message, when it goes to the newsletter page and the correct anchor, the newsletter page is missing all the links to the graphics... the photos are missing the graphic for the faux columns is missing.  It makes no sense.  When I preview the newsletter page from Dreamweaver everything shows up fine.
I do not know if all of this is being caused because I haven't posted this stuff to the site or what.  I've tried re-booting both the browser and Dreamweaver, dumping the cache and still the same nonsense.
    Got any ideas?

  • Home directories loosing access rights - Urgent help required

We have just migrated around 2000 user accounts onto a new xserve server and we have just set up these user accounts so that there home directory is stored on the server as opposed to locally on each machine. To get past a serious performance issue we changed the rights for the group so that only the owner could see there own directory and they had full read right access. Now there is one group and around 2000 user folders in that group, with each folder having the specific owner. Now after we made this change to the rights for the group to be none, and the owner as read/write access to the folder. We pushed this out using Workgroup manager and applied the changes to all child folders and files. Now in theory, when a user logged on they would only be able to see there own home directory and no one else’s on the server - and this is what happened, for the first 5 minutes... and then without making any changes to their server or the client machine, the user then lost access to their own home directory. The only way we have been able to get around this is to allow the group read access to the parent folder, so if a user navigates through to the volume on the server where these home directories are stored then they will be able to see all 2000 folders (but not access any data in them) Now this would not be such a big deal for us to fix ASAP, however it does cause the client machines to go very very very slow when browsing to open files through various programs. E.g. when you click file and then open in Photoshop or whatever the pinwheel will come up and start to spin for at least a min or so before it brings up the finder. I am assuming that this is because the machine is trying to look in all 2000 odd folders. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions on how we can get around this issue or what we are doing wrong?
We are about to split the users up into groups of around 200, which should have been done from the start (BTW we did test this on a test server before implementing it, however it is murphies law that new bugs had to come up)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    :S

Thanks for you suggestions; we only used workstation manager to change the preferences. We were trying to change the rights so that the students would not even see the other student’s folders. We ended up setting up the rights similar to how you suggested, but there was still slow performance issues browsing to folders in the finder, because machine would get to the directory /Volume/server.address/mac_students and then search through 2000 folders (And maybe try to index) before going to the next level being the students home directory. So we split the 2000 users into 10 groups (Which really should have been done from the start) This enabled the finder to load a lot faster, but students could still see the top level folder of the other students in the group, but hey at least we were not faced with a "ohhhh boy, it is Monday morning and no students can log in" situation... We will be tweaking the image that is on all the clients to have the default locations in Photoshop and Quark etc to point locally, but that will be a bit of a longer term thing.
I guess my real initial question was if we made a mistake with the rights on how we set them up, why did it work on the test server the whole time, and even on the live server for a few minutes, I would have thought that if the rights were wrong, then it would not have worked from the start?
Never mind it is working now, which is the main thing.
Another question though, for anyone that is reading, is how to you change the preferences of spotlight and where it saves its data.. Basically when a student logs onto a new computer, spotlight indexes and saves results in each folder and we would like to prevent it from indexing and saving to the home directory (Because this is on the server) We can actually see the CPU of the server go up when a student logs onto a machine that they have never logged into before and spotlight starts indexing the new machine. And preferably we would like to not disable spotlight on all the client machines - as students will no doubt like to search. Also should we disable spotlight on the server end? I guess this would improve performance a bit as well.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
