New Roto Brush in CS5. Worth the upgrade?

I'm sure everyone by now has seen presentations of the new AE CS5. Besides native support for 64-bit platforms, they introduced a very appealing feature called Roto Brush. Besides Adobe employees telling "how great it is", did anyone outside Adobe try it? What do you think, is it really that intuitive? And, is it worth $300 for an upgrade?

As for my previous claim about Ps being on the forefront of Adobe's innovations, then take a look, there are so many things that Ps has that AE doesn't, for instance: range of (handy) selection tools, or cloning brushes, or layer grouping would be just a few off the top of my head. So, no offense, but Ps is way ahead of AE in that sense. (Again I understand that I cannot compare two side by side, since they both work with different media. I'm simply pointing out those nifty tools that Ps has, that would be very nice to have in AE.)
So is it just me, or anyone else feels the same?
I think you are getting yourself to worked up over this and not considering many quite specific things. Software engineering is a complex process (which you as a programmer should know) and doesn't mean just linking a few source files and compiling them. There are different APIs at work here and just the addition of time as a concept complicates matters a bazillion times. Or do you think PS selection tools would be of any use if the only produced jittery output because they did no temporal smoothing? Equally, "Groups" can mean a whole lot of differnt things and adding such a feature will have to be carefully weighed against things like rendering order and the whole concept of how AE structures projects. Would groups be just a meta structure to bundle existing property streams? A whole new way of working? Eliminate pre-comping? Please think about this. Blnaket statements as to one program being behind another are neither fair nor are the in any way correct after the fact. and last but not least, do not forget the human resource factor: Only so many people are working on any given program. Compared to a flagship app like Photoshop that keeps 300 people busy, AE with its 50 people (just do an Alt+click on the About to get a list), of which only a part are the actual programmers, has much less resources and I think it's still amazing, that they can manage to maintain the app on 2 platforms and handle of a bazillion media formats. Yes, AE has its flaws, but it's not that you cannot get anything done with it, is it? I also find such discussions insincere in that you are free to choose your tools and if you are unhappy with AE, you can always try Nuke, Fusion, toxik* or whatever.... Nobody is forcing you to work with Adobe programs.

  • How do I upgrade from OS X processor version 10.5.8 to 10.6 or later. Is it worth the upgrade?

how do I upgrade from OS X processor version 10.5.8 to 10.6 or later? Is it worth the upgrade?

I have 5.8 on iMac, but it is not server version, it is a usual OS install. I would say, that the only thing there worth upgrading is adding more memory. You should also keep upgrading Firefox, OpenOffice etc. for comfortable work and avoid memory and resource-hungry or buggy applications (like Safari). I have recently used iMovie to work with video, and I never had problems with image editing there. I can compare to 6.8 on my MacBook - I cannot say there is something I missing on this iMac 5.8 which is present on 6.8.
In general, I am an old mac user, and I had experiences where OS upgrade speed up things, like going from 10.2 to 10.3, but I still recommend to make sure that you will get rid of the bugs while keeping functionality - notoriouse examples are Photoshop 7 that stopped working on new systems, Gimpshop (and underling gimp 2, though some cured it) and even some Finder features.

  • Is the X-FI Music worth the upgrade from an Audigy 2 for a music listen

I play just a few games, but I mostly listen to music. I have alot of music on my system ripped at at least 92kb
    ps.
I don't listen to downloaded MP3 very often. I tend to use only a couple of the EAX modes, Rock, Dance, and Heavy Metal the most. I also watch DVDs on my system from time to time, but just on a 2 channel system. I've got a 00watt receiver connected to my computer which powers my NHT .5 bookshelf speakers (nice).
Would the upgrade to the new X-FI Music be worth it's
    Thanks,

Thought XtremeMusic is yet much better card vs Audigy 2, but with that cost, I would rather get one of these
    cards w/o EAX :
    E-MU 0404 (~99$)
    ESI Juli@(~30$)
    ECHO Mia MIDI (~30$)
    or
    cards w/ EAX :
    M-Audio Revolution 5. (~75$) or 7. (~00$)
Audiotrak Prodigy LT (~80$) (or wait for Prodigy XT which is coming out ~3/06)
    HDA Digital X-Mystique 7. Gold/ Dolby Digital Li've (~95$)

  • Are the web features in Photoshop CS4 worth the upgrade?

I'm not a high-end user of Photoshop, but will soon start using it to create graphics to be plugged into Portal. I'll be purchasing the web design package (I'll need Dreamweaver and Flash in the not-too-distant future), and am wondering if there are enough improvements to Photoshop's web features to justify going with the Premium edition.
Also, for casual users of Illustrator -- do you think CS4 is worth the upgrade? Having multiple artboards sounds tempting, but is there more?
    Thanks!

  • CS6 upgrade from CS5 worth the cost?

CS5 upgrade to CS6 costs $199.00.  Is it worth it?  Thanks.

All depends on how you use it.  If you buy cameras, CS6 will read future ACR (currently 8.2) although no "enhancements" will be included.  CS5 will be stuck with 6.7 forever.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/whats-new-cs6.html#id_70139
Look at the list of CS6 enhancements and see if you might use them.  Beware that CS6 uses the video card more heavily and therefore at least a moderate card is needed.  3D requires at least 512 meg VRAM.
    Hope this helps.

  • When will iPhone 5 (or whatever apple calls it) be out? Will it be worth the upgrade?

Hi, I currently have a Google Android phone. I got an iPad for Christmas and want my next phone to be an iPhone since it just came out on Sprint. Does anyone know the expected release date for it? I get $150 off a new phone (full price not upgrade) July 1st. If its not out then, would it be worth the wait?

No one here can advise you on the release date of the next generation iPhone.  Apple have made no announcement and until they do no one knows.

  • Currently on 10.4.11. Is 10.5 or 10.6 worth the upgrade? If so, which one?

Headline speaks for itself. I have a 5 year old MacBook Intel Core Duo running on 10.4.11.
It's been a good computer, but have filled up the hardrive and notice slower performance, my airport has been spotty ever since last summer (I've switched out cards, and have been told it could be the OS). I feel its time for an upgrade but was curious if the new OS were worth going to and if so, which one to choose or should I just get more memory and a larger HD?
    Thanks.

    You can upgrade.
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
Whether upgrading or not is your decision based on what you need and what you are willing to do in order to facilitate the upgrade.
As for more memory and bigger hard drive, I'd so absolutely do that.
Minor consideration is whether the cost of doing the upgrades versus selling or donating the computer isn't worth the cost of buying a new one.

  • Oracle 8.1.6 and Redhat6.1 - worth the upgrade?

Hi to all of you who have taken the trouble to install the latest Oracle8i,
I currently have Oracle 8.1.5.0.2 on Redhat linux 6.1. This was a long and painful process as I navigated around all the quirks of the installer and reinstalled Linux several times to meet Oracle's requirements.
Is it worth the extra effort after just installing what I have now to get the latest verisons (of both Redhat and Oracle8i) Are there any major advantages to be gained?? Have major bugs been fixed?? Objective opinions from non-Oracle, non-Redhat sales people appreciated!!

I recently Installed 8.1.6 on RedHat 6.2 and Oracle seemed to have fixed all of their issues regarding both the installation as well as problems with the Intelligent agent and their gui config tools. I recommend upgrading to 8.1.6 if you need the remote administration functions that use the intelligent agent but if you are not willing to upgrade to 6.2 then be weary event though Oracle Says they have tested it on more platforms Who Knows what will happen if you do not have the latest and greatest.

  • IMac 3.4ghz processor, worth the upgrade?

I looking into purchasing an iMac with the 3.4gHz processor; is it worth the $200 upgrade? I plan to do alot of photo and video work on this computer and an occational high-end game.

    Michael,
We see posts like yours all the time, at the end of the day the decision is yours. If you do professional grade video work and are a hard core gamer and other possible 3D renderings then yes the i7 would help. Also if you tend to keep your machines for several years this will help future  proof it. However if those things are not as critical then you probably would be very happy for quite some time with the i5 which is also a strong performer. Bottom line, it's your money so it's your decision.

  • GE60 VS. GT60 - is it worth the upgrade?

Hello keepers of MSI knowledge - I'm getting ready to dive into the gaming laptop world, and I'm down to three choices -
    Lenovo Y580
    MSI GE60
    MSI GT60
    They're all 15.6 inch screen - 1920x1080 resolution - same i7 processors, so that's even.
The Lenovo Y580 and MSI GE60 are GTX 660, the MSI GT60 is a GTX 675.
The Lenovo Y580 and MSI GE60 have 6 Gb ram, MSI GT60 has 12 Gb.
The Lenovo has 5400 spin hard drive  , but a 16 Gb SSD - MSI are both 7200 spin hard drives.
The MSI GT60 has a blu-ray drive, others have std DVD drive.
I'm leaning towards eliminating the Lenovo because (1) 5400 spin hard drive (kinda stupid hardware decision IMO) (2) simply the fact that MSI is known for gaming laptops, and (3) my son has a MSI 17.3 laptop which he loves and when he had to get it repaired MSI did the repairs quickly and efficiently - BIG thumbs up to MSI there...
So now it's down to the GE60 vs. GT60 - right now the GE60 is $1120 and the GT60 is $1300 after rebate.  So is the (1) 4 Gb extra ram, (2) video upgrade from GTX 660 to GTX 675, and (3) Blu-ray drive worth the $180??
I'm leaning heavily towards the GE60 - am I missing anything?
Any body have any experiences with these machines, opinions, or advice they would care to give?

Thanks folks for the opinions - I was already starting to lean towards the GT60, and you've brought up some excellent points to help convince me.  Now i just gotta decide on the best deal.  From what I can find, several sites have it for $1399 with a $100 rebate.  Newegg had the best deal with the throw in of Crysis 3 - not a great game based on reviews - but hey, it's freebie.   However, when i look now, it shows that the model is discontinued -

I'm hoping they will get it back in stock, or that someone has an end of month sale to tip me to their site!

  • Epicor 10 -- Worth the upgrade?

    Jeff,
We have been live on 10.0.700.4 for 2 weeks now. We went from 9.05.606a.
Upgrade week was hellish...but its pretty solid by now. We only have about 20 tickets open on SW.
Users love it compared to 9. MUCH faster in just about every aspect. I love the upgraded infrastructure as a sysadmin because now I have more flexibility with my servers. ..and managing it seems easier.
Going from that old of a version will require much work....and it will also depend on how much you have customized. I think that Epicor has a version 8 upgrade tool.
I don't know how many users/sites/plants/DB size you have...but we are about 60 users, 40 MES, 1 site, one plant, and a 25GB DB.

Version 10.1 is coming out, so I'd wait for that release. I believe you'll have to do the Workcenter to Resource conversion. Be skeptical of their sizing requirements, as it's a lot of overkill. I'm not familiar with version 8.03 really. Is it full progress or SQL? Our data conversion from progress made our database grow 500%. One thing that got me was the SQL core licensing costs. Was getting conflicting information on how much would be needed and we overbought. I'd start off with a 2 or 4 core license and move it up if you dedicate more cores to your SQL server.

  • Is it worth the upgrade to a new Mac Pro?

I have a question about the new Mac Pro. I have a 1st Generation Mac Pro (the one released in 2006). I primarily use it to do a lot of motion graphics and video editing/effects. I use Final Cut Pro, Motion (I have FCS 2), After Effects, Cinema 4D, etc. Would it be worth upgrading to the newer Mac Pro? Would I notice much difference in rendering speeds, working with 3D, etc?
My current Mac Pro has 5 GB of Ram, and the NVidia GeForce 8800 GT graphics card; 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Processors
I'm really debating on selling my Mac Pro and purchase one of the 2009 Mac Pros but only if I would really notice much of an overall difference.
Thanks in advance for any answers and input!

Hi, it really depends on what you plan to do with the computer. If running windows in 64 bit mode is a worry for you, then I would trade your 2006 for at least a 2008 mac pro. The Harpertown mac pros are still considered by many just as fast as the 2009, if not faster in some things. Remember, it is hyper threading that gives the 2009 their power and the speed of 1066mhz DDR3 memory.
If you plan on just using the mac pro for light video editing and encoding and using pro apps, the 2008 mac pro will be more than enough. I had a 2006 mac pro going from a G5 Quad. Once I found out that I really enjoy running windows on it and the thought of a new cinema display, I decided to trade my 2006 for the 2008. Sometime in the next few years, I will then trade up my harpertown for the Nehalem mac pro and so forth.
You are right! very few people these days have 2000+ dollars to spend outright on a computer, but I got a great deal on my 2006 trade which was 1850 - the 2008 3.0 harpertown for 2300.00
