New router M1424WR (ver. I) is slower than ver. C for wireless--why?

I installed a new Actiontec MI424WR (ver. I) router, which I bought from Verizon to replace my version C router. The new router is fine for wired connections but slow for wireless.  If I set my laptop right next to the router, the speed is fine.  If I set the laptop 20 feet away, in a straight line with no obstructions between it and the router, the speed drops by 50-90 percent. Overall, I find the version I router worse than the version C.  FYI, the laptop is new, superfast, and has wireless-n. Is it normal to find the version I router slower than version C?  I would like to find a solution. Otherwise, I suppose I will have to return the new $100 router.  I tried Verizon's chat support, but the tech simply told me that walls etc. can slow down wireless speed--not useful info, given that the version C was running faster under the same conditions here. Are there some special tricks to make the version C router work better?  The new router also seems less able to send signals through walls and floors, which should not be the case.  I feel disappointed that Verizon pushed the sale of the new router; the upgrade has been a time-consuming downgrade.  Thank you.

Try changing the channels on the router. 1, 6, 11. Most likely its set to 6 so try the other 2. You can download a free program called inSSIDer which will help you figure out what the best channel for you to be using is.

  • I just restored my 24 inch imac and it seems to be running MUCH slower than before. Any Ideas why? thanks in advance for your help!

I have erased and restored my 24 inch Intel iMac. I have upgraded to the last version of X os. My system is running WAY slower than it was before. Even opening windows seems to lag and the spinning wheel come up for everything. Every task is slow, even typing this! lol
    Here are my specs:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac8,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM81.00C1.B00
      SMC Version (system):          1.30f1
Any ideas would be helpful. Is this a hardware issue?
    Thanks!

    Matt:
Thanks for the update. It is good to know that the maintenance procedures helped. Regular maintenance and a good backup are key to computer security. Gulliver's article has a suggested schedule. Dr. Smoke's FAQ on Backup and Recovery has excellent information and advice. I part company with him on his insistence on Retrospect, which I have found to be difficult to use. SuperDuper has been shown the best backup software in these tests.
If you usually leave your computer on or asleep, it is good practice to shut down and start up in Safe Mode occausionally. I do it about once weekly.
    Good luck.

  • New Z710 Win 8.1 is slower than my 8-year-old AMD!!!!

    Hi...
I got my brand-new Z710 a week ako. I haven't finished setting it up yet & I've already got weird problems... My AMD PC, which is running win 7 pro (64b) boots to the login screen 2x as fast as the Z710 - no lie - both units side by side. That simply shouldn't be. I wasted my money on the z710 if this is the speed it runs at with an i7 & 8G Ram. I understand that I've got to get used to W8.1, but regardless... I got an error 0xc000021a yesterday, the wireless link decides whenever it wants to connect... I've done a little searching & there are a number of articles that talk about taking out the "Intel-Dynamic-Platform-Thermal-Framework" being at fault & to take it out - except I can't find it. I called Lenovo support & they seemed fixated on my wireless & trying to blame my router when the z710 is the only one having connectivity troubles. Going hardwire doesn't make it any faster.
I don't recall having this much trouble with a new laptop out of the box. Not sure if anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this? I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do next.
    Any feedback appreciated!
    Thanks,
    RR.

    Hi…
Hopefully this message goes through. Apparently, my Lenovo community login user name is suddenly not valid anymore. I’ve been on a number of forums over the years & I gotta say this one is one of the tougher ones to use.
I don’t have traditional BIOS in this machine - it’s that “UEFI”. I went through it & there’s really not much in there. It took a while to figure out how to get in - can’t imagine how fun updating it would be if that were possible.
All the windows updates ran, updates for the video went through… don’t have any other peripherals attached yet & hadn’t started loading any programs yet because of the trouble.
Sine my initial post, I’ve been staying off wifi, got my programs loaded & getting far less crashes. That said: IE just crashed this morning just trying to open it.
At work, I deal with process control computers & servers - have to deal lots with I.T. & their contractors & ya, they give us new & recycled machines all the time - built from images that aren’t always up to date, so - video drivers 6 months old, etc. but for a brand new OEM machine, this thing should be a lot more solid & certainly quicker than the old AMD.
I’ve done some other reading/investigating… another popular theory is to create a new admin account & blow away the original. Not sure how that works, maybe I’ll try it… I did that once on my W7 o/s I it created more trouble than it solved.
Very frustrating to get a new machine to have it not work right & can’t even get the manufacturer to help you. On the Lenovo site there appears to be some software diagnostic tools available - maybe one of those could help…
Thanks for the reply… the only one I got in a week or so of posting. I had given up. more so now that my account seems to suddenly be invalid.

  • New Nvidia Driver ver 260 for Mac Mini 2010 and HDMI problems.

So this is the first release from Nvidia that is installable "out of the box" directly from Nvidia. Unfortunately, I'm now running into problems with getting the resolution to scale on my HDMI connected HDTV.
When I go into Nvidia properties and select "Adjust desktop size and position", I'm only give 4 options to change the scaling. Unlike the old Bootcamp version which had an option to manually adjust the screen by make the arrows fit on all sides, this new version has the options of:
When using a resolution lower than my displays native resolution...
    -Use NVIDIA scaling
-Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed aspect ratio
    -Use my display's built-in scaling
    -Do not scale
So when I set my display to 1176x664, The resolution changes, however, it still goes beyond the visible border. Changing any of the options above doesn't seem to change anything-
I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing these same issues, or knows how to remedy it?

I completely agree with your assessment for Problem #1, but here we have it.
I will try re-installing and will also double check with the drivers for the monitor. Thanks for the advice. If all else fails, I will just use parallels.

  • AE CS6 Far slower than 5.5 for some reason.

    Howdy..
    I have a fairly complex photo-collage comp in AE CS6. It's 1m long.
When I render with CS6, the estimated time is around 6 hours, however, if I 'save-as' a 5.5 project and render than with 5.5. the ETA is juat 2.25 hours...
Anyone else seeing this? It's on a 2 year old MacPro. 16GB Ram. Quatro 4000 card.
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Ben

  • Version 22 slower than version 19 for javascript

Go look here, i was testing something...than realized there is update did it and went from
550million operations to 140 million operations after updating from v19 to v22.
    http://jsperf.com/object-dot-vs-bracket
Why and how can i fix it if i can be fixed.
Very unexpected though. Upgrades suppose to improve all around.
I did factory reset too to fix it, but didn't work.

Firefox 23 is faster than all of them.

  • Getting a new computer and want to set up the old one for wireless.

I am getting a new G5 and have a few questions about wireless networking.
First off, I presently have a G4 Dual 400, wired to a Netgear wireless G router. My laptop (G4 Titanium) and my iPhone will not connect to wi-fi at the furthest location in my house. I can get 1 bar. If I move to the next room I can get some times 2 bars. The router is located on the third floor of our house. It is the only place the cable comes in for the internet. I cannot change it's location.
If I upgrade to the Air Port Extreme. (I have a 100 iPhone credit) can I expect a big improvement in coverage? I am not so concerned about speed.
Secondly, I am giving the G4 to the kids. It will be located in the farthest room from the Air Port Extreme as well.
I have looked at Sonet's PCI Card $100.00 and this, on Ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150164457261&ssPageName= STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005. Has anyone had any experience with either? Also seen on ebay is a USB antenna, a little deal, looks like a flash drive that plugs in.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

    For future reference,
If you don't know, you usually have to be hard-wired (ethernet cable) to the router to change anything. Only for changes .
I doubt that you will get a better signal as the FCC standard is so many watts max. (unless you hack it, but who wants to sleep next to a microwave?)
BUT, you can use a repeater. You just plug it into an electical outlet say, on the second floor and it should be able to repeat the signal from there. I don't think the older Base Stations could do it so i'm not sure about the new ones. But you can get one from say, Lynksys, Netgear, Belkin, etc. and they are a bit cheaper too. I think their called Bridges.
I would definatly find out before you buy the Airport tho. AulfulI expensive door stop if it won't work. I think i remember someone using the Express" (?) for the same thing but it was for streaming music to the stereo, I don't think it is "G" rated tho so it would slow every thing down.
By the way Max bars, (nearest), you can play Quake, Unreal, etc, but under 1 bar, (farthest), you might be able to play chess.
Unless you have a USB-2 port your better off with a Firewire dongle. They didn't have USB-2 on the earlier Laptops. But the Firewire ones are hard to find. I plan on getting one for the wifes G3 Ibook.
What ever you get, remember, you want at LEAST what your DSL/Cable router is."G" router, "G" cards, bridges, etc. If anything make sure they are backwards compatible to A-B-G so if you get a "good deal" on a "whatever" and it's not as fast as the network because it's locked out then it's not a good deal if you can't use it. If you can afford it, go with the next higher rating as in "N" (or at least 5 minutes ago) but make sure it's backwards useable so when you upgrade to another 'puter etc, one less item to upgrade....

  • New Mac Mini slower than my 4 years old iMac

My Intel iMac (20" display) four years old is out of order (I think the Power Supply was gone), and I bought the new entry level Mac Mini.
When I started using it I noticed that it's much slower in several tasks than my old iMac (when restarting, when opening applications, when working with an app with another appl in the background, etc. etc.). I was concerned about this, but then I asked some friends that have Mac minis and they said that it's normal.
Why? Why a computer with a new i5 Intel processor can be slower than a four years old iMac Core 2 Duo? Is it because of the slow drive (5200 rpm)? Or what is the explanation? If this is normal for the mini, I'll try to fix my old iMac as soon as possible.

Don't downgrade to Lion. For what it's worth, my experience with Lion and Mountain Lion has been almost the exact opposite than what CaptH reported: I find ML to be much faster and more reliable, both on my late-2012 Mini and my mid-2007 iMac.
Your perceived speed issues are almost certainly a result of the slower-spinning hard drive in the Mini as Shootist007 pointed out earlier. Go ahead and disable Spotlight if you want to, but once the indexing is complete (which can take a few hours – or even a few days if you have a lot of data) it shouldn't be a problem unless you are continually connecting different large external drives.
Get the latest Combo Updater and install that. If you have some minor OS issue, that should solve it. Do a normal Software Update /  check the Mac App Store for updates after you install the Combo Updater. Get it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640
If you continue to be bugged by the slower speed, see if your local Apple Store will allow you to exchange it and a little extra money for an equivalent model with a Fusion Drive. Or go to Other World Computing and purchase their kit to add a second drive, and use it to add an SSD in the second drive bay:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/OWC.INSTANT.481.2
Also, RAM is super-duper-uber-cheap right now. If your Mini has only the stock 4gb of RAM, you might be pleasantly surprised by the improved performance by doubling that. I have 16gb in my Mini, it cost me well less than a hundred bucks, and it makes everything better including graphics performance. But if you don't do something to work around that slow 5400rpm hard drive, it will always be the bottleneck in your system.

  • Slower than previous ipod?

My new 80 GB ipod is much slower than my old 40 GB. I've got more music on it, but just wondering if anyone else was experiencing this? Is there anything I can do?
    80 GB

slower accessing songs for sure. seeking forward to the next song takes much longer than my old ipod. i've heard that a certain version of the 80 GB ipods was slower and that apple had corrected it in the new versions. anybody else heard that?

  • Anyone has any idea why KT400 is slower than KT333?

We have heard and seen reviews that MSI KT4 Ultra is(was) slower than KT3 Ultra(2), so as other manufacturers KT400 boards. All seem to be slower than KT333.
Anybody know why? or have read any studies on this issue?

I have no idea, but Mobo manufacturers are rushing new products to the market to be the first with 333, 400, what's next?  My strategy is to read the reviews but wait until the board (or CPU) is sub top and buy it when the bugs have been ironed out (or well documented in fora like this) and the price has come down.  Sorry, I am Dutch!

  • Configuring a printer to a new router

I just recently got a new router supplied through my service provider. I have a wireless HP Deskjet3050A printer. and since getting the new router i cant print. It says that everything is good and ready to print but it doesnt do anything when I click the print button. I think the printer needs to be configured to the router which I have no idea how to do. Also, I cant use the CD that came with my printer as I just got a new computer and it is a Windows 8.1 operating system. My old one was Windows Vista. Any and all help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I did post my test early this year and sometimes around Christmas 2012. I used 3 different routers and a dozen of Windows machines (sorry I don't own any Apple product but from time to time I use my kids Apple devices to test when they come home on weekends).
The quick and easy way is to run setup from a computer which is connected to the network. The printer will use information such as SSID, security key ... from computer(s) and reconnect to new router.
    Hope this helps.

  • New router - how to change wifi settings for Photosmart B109n

I got a new router. How do I change the wifi settings for my Photosmart B109n?  I changed the PC wifi settings (no problem). I connected the PC (Windows 7) to the printer by USB cable. In the HP Solutions Centre, when I click on Settings / Network Settings, it tries to open a browser (IE9) page, with the URL being the IP address (192.168.2.3), but it goes to the "cannot display" page. Do I need the HP software CD? (I think I've lost it.) The manual explains how to set up (using the CD), but I can't find how to change settings for a new router.

Glad to see that you have everything solved. If you run into any other problems, feel free to ask.

  • Sent new Router- will I have to do complete re-set up?

I just got a new router to replace a 12 year old westell(still not sure why I had to PAY for a old one that needed constent reboot) anyways they sold me a ACTIONTEC-GT784WNV - Looks very basic..
I have a security camera system set up with port forwarding etc..  That someone help me set up.    The "Tech" told me I would not have to have to reset everyhting all up.. JUST switch routers and all port forward settings etc.. wil carry to this new router..
I'm a little nervous to do this.. and have everything go down.. with a xmass pkgs in the mail.. Is this a true statement can anyone confirm??, or will I have to re-do all my setups port forwrding etc.. on this new router.

Once you have reinstated the tracks to your library, you'll able to sync your new iPod to it automatically and update it with the contents of your iTunes.

  • Installing new router

im getting a new router...i have 2 laptops and a ps3 wireless..what do i have to do to remove my old router setting and install all my new router stuff? just delete all my old router softeware from my computer and 2 laptops and install the new one?

If you are getting a new router...i think you can try to update the firmware of the router. To update the firmware of router try this: 1. Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model number and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer. 2. Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file. 3. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 4. Go to administartion tab there 5. Go to fimware update sub-tab there 6. Browse for the firmware image file and click update 7. when update completes turn off modem & router. 8. After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router. To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier 2. Go to wireless tab. 3. Go to wireless security sub-tab 4. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key Well you need to input all the wireless settings of your wireless network on Wii. To get these settings: 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 2. Goto wireless tab. Here you will get the wireless network name/SSID. Here make sure wireless SSID broadcast is enabled. 3. Now goto wireless security sub-tab and here you will get the security mode and the security key. If security type is WPA note passphrase/shared key, and if its WEP note down wep encryption level and key 1 from listed 4 keys Then try connecting your 2 wireless laptops & a PS3 wirelessly to the new network you setup....it will definately work.

  • New Router = No iChat joy :-(

I just bought and installed a Netgear WGT624v3 (108mb 802.11g wireless router). Suddenly iChat won't work. I open it and try to make myself available/connect. It immediately kicks me off and give me a window stating:
    Lost Connection with AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost.
Time to begin deductive reasoning. I tried another AIM logon, same effect. I tried a .Mac logon, it worked! Hmmm...
I go to AOL.com and login to AIM express at the top (http://aimexpress.aol/.com) but it tells me "You have been signed in to AIM.com, but the Instant Messenger service is currently unavailable. Please try again later." So I reason that AIM must be down worldwide
To double-check my conclusion I disconnect the new router and reconnect the old Netgear MR814 (11mb 802.11b wireless router). I never had problems with the old, nor did I have to open any ports to use iChatAV. Once again my iChat works like a charm on AIM. So its not the AIM network.
Conclusion: perhaps its a combination of the new router and AIM, maybe I have to open ports or something for AIM to work?
I proceed to open all the ports Ralph Johns lists in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=737899&tstart=0
All listed ports now open, and no joy. Still no idea why its not working.
    What am I missing?

I'll try. If the .Mac account works, then what does
this tell us about the router? That it allows iChat
to work via the .Mac account but not the AIM account?
I tried to chat via my .Mac account with my Dad (AIM account) and it looked like it was going to go through but then it didn't, and gave me an option to send Apple a report. We could text chat, just not audio or video chat.
I reset my PRAM as another article said there were failures due to the recent security update. But it didn't cvhange anything as I had this problem before the security update.
So to recap: my old netgear allowed me to iChat AV w/o any special settings. My new one does not. With the new one, I can login anbd text chat with my .Mac account, but I can't even log in with my AIM account at all.
I don't know who to go to for help. If I call netgear they'll probably say we don't know why you're having troubles with "x" program, talk to the people who made it. My ISP would no doubt say the same, and these forums have tried awful hard but no results just yet.
By the way, where does iChat list the ports required? Why does it just work with some routers and not others?
