New router solved my Safari problems

This is just an FYI. I have had many of the problems with Safari (both v4 and v5) discussed here. Frequent hangs, occasional crashes, Flash crashing, etc, especially when visiting pages with Flash Content. Also, after a hang I would quit (or force quit) Safari, yet would still have temporary connectivity issues (e.g., unable to connect to internet through Safari, Firefox, dashboard, etc) that would last about 20 seconds before regular internet connectivity was restored. During this time, activity tracker wouldn't show any obvious processes that could account for this. However, I connect to the internet using a wireless router so this was one possibility.
I tried all the remedies chronicled here, including checking for add-ons/plug-ins, deleting plist, clearing Safari and Flash caches, deleting and reinstalling Flash, reinstalling Safari, open DNS, turning off DNS prefetching, etc. I struggled with this (and have been frustrated by it) for quite some time, and had almost given up on Safari. However, being an original Mac user (I remember being excited about upgrading my 128K to a 512K) I really didn't want to admit defeat.
Accessing Flash-rich pages through Safari seemed to cause the connectivity problems, but the problems seemed to persist even after quitting Safari. For this reason, I decided to try using a new wireless router. I had been using a Netgear WGR614v5 (from 2004), and I had updated the firmware. I now have a new router (Netgear WNDR3400, N600) and all of these problems are gone. The old router was otherwise working fine (on an older, non-Intel iMac, a Powerbook, my iPhone and a windoze machine running Windows 7) so the problem seems to be how Safari (or OS 10.6) interacts with the router or its driver. I can now relate to those who are very happy with Safari and its speed and reliability.
So if someone is having similar problems, perhaps this info could be useful. Or, if the problem was unique to just my machine, then (if nothing else) this was just a chance for me to vent.
Also, there are a few users on this forum who have been very helpful (even for a lurker). So a big shout-out to you folks (you know who you are) and the very patient help you provide here.

Ditto what Bee said!
That is just the kind of really useful information based on user experience we need more of in the forums!
Please feel free to keep it coming!

• New iPhone Update cuasing Safari problems?

Ever since I put the latest update on my iPhone (not the iTunes update, the next one) Safari regularly "crashes." Also, if other apps are running, i.e. iPod, they typically crash first, then Safari and iPhone goes to home screen. Anyone else having similar issues or know of any solutions?

• New router can't get connection and can't find set up on macbook

I had to have a new router as i had problems with my internet solved internet problems but now my printer doesnt work unless i connect with usb cable, i have tried everything including deleting the printer, which now i have deleted the set up info off my macbook and can no longer install the printer please help it was working fine with my other router...

Hey , Welcome to the HP forums! I hope you enjoy your stay here. I see that you have replaced your router and are having some difficulties with connecting your Deskjet F4580 to the network. I can help you with that. As you are using Macintosh 10.7 I would recommend using a Windows PC to install the printer on and then to add to your wireless network. If that is not a practical option there are a couple of things we could try. Apple Software UpdateClick on your Apple Icon and go to Software Updates.Install any available updates.Download Apple's HP Printer drivers. If during the install there are no wireless options then:Go to your Apple icon, System Preferences, and Print and Scan.Double-click on the icon of your printer on the left side of this screen. In the pop up window click on Settings, Utility, and then Open Printer Utility. In this new window you should have a wireless tab along the top you can click on.On the left hand side we're looking for a wireless setup wizard.Run the wireless setup wizard to add the printer to your wireless network.Once the printer is connected remove the USB cable from the back of the printer.Go back to Apple, System Preferences, Print and Scan.Click on the plus button in the bottom left corner.Select your printer in this window. If there is a line that says Use that says Airprint click on that to select your printer from the list instead.Click on Add.Try printing.Ad-HocIf the above method does not allow you to connect the printer wirelessly then this may work.Perform a factory reset on the printer. I will include the directions on how to do that in a private message shortly.Turn the printer back on.Press the wireless button on the front of the printer.Wait about a minute. On your Mac or another wireless device you should see a network with a name similar to "HP Print XX Deskjet F4500" listed. Connect to that network.Press and hold the scan button (printer icon below the red x on the printer) for about ten seconds. When you release the printer should print a wireless test report. On the device you connected to the printer open a web browser and type the IP Address in the Address Bar exactly as it appears on the test report. You should have a Network tab along the top of this window. On the left side we are looking for a Wireless Setup Wizard. When you run that that should connect the printer to your wireless network.Once the printer is connected remove the USB cable from the back of the printer. If you connected your Mac to the printer above then reconnect the printer to your wireless network now.Go back to Apple, System Preferences, Print and Scan.Click on the plus button in the bottom left corner.Select your printer in this window. If there is a line that says Use that says Airprint click on that to select your printer from the list instead.Click on Add.Try printing. If this helps connect your printer to your wireless network then please let other forum users know by clicking on Accept as Solution below my post. Likewise if you have any other questions please let me know.I hope this helps and I hope you have a great day!

• New Router = Success

After an in-home Best Buy Geek Squad visit to install a new router, my iPad is finally working here at home. It took the BB guy close to an hour to get the network up and running--no wonder I had no luck when I tried to install it myself.
For those interested, I got a Netgear DGN2000 Wirless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem, and my DSL is thru Verizon.
Linda

Hi
The iPad likes certain routers as you know routers send wi-fi on specific 'channels'. Channel 11 is the ipads favorite.
Many many many folks (too many I think) are going out to buy new routers when they have one already, and by luck (or hard work) they then work e.gl channel 11 is set by default or is changed to channel 11 for example
Unfortunately what happens when you leave your house with the unicorn tear carrying device (my ipad)?
I only raise this as (I believe) folks need to either put the pressure on apple to fix this, or perhaps see if the fixes some folks have suggested are real fixes or not like this one of mine here
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2408476&tstart=0
If it works folks need to get apple to recognise the fixes so folks do not go out an potentially waist money for a new router that fixes the problem whilst the iPad is in their own home only.
Unless they intend to not leave home with it ever. In that case good luck to you, but even with it working without the fix
good luck
consider emailing [email protected] with the fix that works best for you especially the permanent one above.

Safari problem: when I switch back into safari from another application, the menu bar comes up but no tabs or windows. What's going on? Just started yesterday. I have found a workaround: when I Command Tab back to safari, I hit command T to open a new tab and Command W to close it, and my other tabs are visible.
I have tried shutting down, closing tabs, with no success. What's going on and how can I fix it?
Thanks,
Cindi B
PS: I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
The version is noted there.
v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion v10.8 Mountain Lion
It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

• I set up a new router and the windows machines have no problem with connectivity. I go through the MacBook Pro's airport assistant and view my network and then enter the WPA2 password. I get back a message saying the password is incorrect when it is

I set up a new router and the windows machines connect fine. My MacBook Pro does not. I go through the airport assistant and see the network yet when I enter the router WPA password I get a message back saying that the password is incorrect. And, it isn't! Very frustrating. What can I do as I had the same problem after I tried to reinstall my last router. Again, only on the Mac. Thanks!

If you kept the same Base Station name and network name, that can confuse Keychain Access. Either change the Base Station and network name, or open Keychain Access Utility and delete any reference to your Base Station and network name. Make sure you delete from the Login and System keychains.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures. How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old? Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem. Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos? Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

• I bought a new router - Netgear WNR3500L. I had a dlink. The problem is now my iChat window keeps quitting. I have a G5, running Snow Leopard.

I bought a new router - Netgear WNR3500L. I had a dlink. The problem is now when I click to open iChat, I don't see any of my Buddies in the window and shortly thereafter, my iChat quits. I have a G5, running Snow Leopard. My firewall is off. I'm not savvy to how the settings should be. Help please!

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
Log back in again.
And turn your Mac's firewll on and add iChat.

• Spaces and Safari: problem opening new browser windows

I have just installed 10.5 and have turned on spaces. I have put safari into its own space. When I control click on a hyperlink and select 'open in new window' from the submenu the new window does not open. I can open a new tab but new windows do not appear. The windows don't appear in any other space either.
Is this a spaces/safari conflict or a safari problem?

Hi John,
I agree with Adam on the <cflocation> tag. I suspect it is a browser setting.
Like in FireFox
Tools/Options/Tabs
[X] Open new windows in a new tab
Like in IE,ver7
Tools/Internet Options/General Tab/Tab Section/Settings button
then bottom section "Open links from other programs in"
[X] A new tab in the current window
Try unchecking these boxes and then try your process again. Not
saying this will correct your issue, but does seem like a browser
issue to me as well and not <cflocation>

• I installed a new router from my ISP provider and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network. What do I need to do to correct this problem?

I installed a new (and supposedly better & stronger) router from my ISP provider (Verizon) and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network.
My Mac is not backing up because it can't find my Time Capsule network & my "Guest" network has also disappeared.
What do I need to do to correct this problem?

You must reset the TC to factory and start over. The TC simply remembers too much from the previous setup to work in the new one.
If your new router is going to take the router role, then the TC will have to be bridged and you will lose your Guest wireless.. the way around this is to use the Verizon router as your guest wireless and the TC as your main wireless.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

I have changed to AT&T U-verse, which has a new modem and router combined. Safari 5.1.10 will not recognize the wifi signal, but Foxfire will. What settings do I need to change on Safari?

Hello SalsburgD
The first thing I would check is to make sure that the router is using the recommended settings to get online. Another troubleshooting step is to create a new Network Location and then join your network to see if that changes things.

• APPLE MANAGEMENT 3.1.X WIFI problem only fixed by newer ROUTER

I just had a MANAGEMENT IN support tech. tell me the only way to fix issues with WIFI once you update to newer OS is to get NEW ROUTER because it won't work with older technology routers.

It is pretty well known here that 3.x OS requires newer routers or at least router running updated firmware. I personally don't find this to be a problem nor have I found a public router that I couldn't connect to.
I recently had a router problem, not a wireless issue, and it would not connect to my cable modem. Guess what? Router firmware update and everything was fixed.

• Hi everybody, I am in Turkey on a long assignment, I need help solving a big problem on my macbook pro os 10.9.3. The other week my wife visited some website and now we have a redirect virus of some sort, and every other time when we click

Hi everybody, I am in Turkey on a long assignment, I need help solving a big problem on my macbook pro os 10.9.3. The other week my wife visited some website and now we have a redirect virus of some sort, and every other time when we click on a link or anywhere on the page we are redirected to this casino web site, https://casino.7bets10.com/tr/?from=hy9yKXD43jSC-8Oxbw4femNd7ZgqdRLk-dHJpeG9uaXR l. Its the same whether on Chrome or Safari. Does anyone have a solution, thank you!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(Software Hardware Memory Diagnostics Power FireWire Thunderbolt USB Fonts 51 4 1000 25 5120 KiB/s 1024 85 \\b%% 20480 1 MB/s 25000 ports     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

• Am I going to need a new router, or can I upgrade my existing model ?

Hi
I wonder if someone could help me out here, I have a Edimax AR 7084gA 802.11g wireless router which is 4 years old, it has been running my husbands Acer Aspire 9300 laptop running Linux Ubuntu (and previously Vista) for 4 years and, and my MacBook running Leopard and now Snow Leopard for over 3 years without any connectivity problem.
We both have a 3g iPod Touch now running on iOS4, since the purchase of both iPods we have been having trouble with both of them loosing internet connection, we open Safari and are told the content is loading but nothing happens, three bars are showing for the signal most of the time. To combat the problem we are having to re-set the network settings a couple of times a day and this solves the problem straight away, and then it works just fine for hours.
We have used both iPods in several hotels and for a week in our sons house in Germany, and have never once had an internet problem, or had to re set the network settings.
The questions I have are, do I need to do something with the existing router ? I have looked on the Edimax website for firmware updates and the latest for this model are from June 2008 and the download seems to be for Windows only, or do I need to think about upgrading the router to a more powerful 802.11n model such as Apples Airport Extreme.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, the problem is not a great one, but a niggle that I would rather sort out as we will soon be buying an iPad and I would like to get it sorted before then.
Many Thanks.

I'd get a new router. Your existing router appears to have problems, is 4 years old and is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Since you can get a good wireless-G router for around $35 would be the cheapest approach (e.g., Netgear WGR614v10 at Staples).
If money is no object, you could move to a wireless-N router like the Airport Extreme. If you do get a 802.11n wireless router make sure it is one that implements the final version of the 802.11n standard and not a draft version.

• Windows 8 driver cannot find HP Officejet Pro L7590 ethernet printer on my new router

I'm changing to a new router and had to change the IP address of my ethernet Officejet Pro L7590 from fixed assigned 192.168.1.7 into fixed assigned 192.168.2.168 (my new provider provided router doesn't support the 192.168.1.xx range). At installation my PC Driver cannot find my HP Officejet Pro L7590 ethernet printer, both not by it's search function, nor by giving the specific new IP address. Browsing and login into the printer by adressing the new Static IP address works however fine: de printer is well attached. What do I wrong with at PC driver installation, any suggestions to have the printer coupled to the PC driver?
Update: Connecting the printer directly to the router instead of via a switch solved the problem!

The Officejet Pro L7590 unfortunately will not be updated to support AirPrint. Check out my [FAQ|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2658560&tstart=0] thread for some other options.
Just trying to help.
