New Safari? What Safari?

I'm reading about the recent 3.2.3 Safari Update. This option doesn't show up for me with Software Update, however. What to do?
I am presently using Safari 3.2.1. and my OS X version is 10.5.6. Is it perhaps a question of first updating Leopard to v. 10.5.7? Might Software Update then present me with the capability to move to Safari 3.2.3?
And how is it that I seem to need to go from Safari 3.2.1 to 3.2.3 while bypassing 3.2.2?
As you can plainly see, I am a bit perplexed. Thanks kindly in advance for helping me sort through the updates.
~ john

Thanks, Everyone. The picture seems to be getting clearer as we move along.
Still the question remains: Why the sloppy nomenclature on Apple's part?
Yes, Safari 3.2.2 was for Windows only, while the last Mac version remained v. 3.2.1. But why confuse Mac Safari users by calling the current upgrade 3.2.3. when the previous one was 3.2.1 ? Why bypass version 3.2.2? After all, there never was a Mac Safari called version 3.2.2.
That's my only point.
To remian consistent, it would have been far more correct for the new version of Windows Safari to become v.3.2.3, while the new Mac version would logically be called, 3.2.2.
I can understand why Apple may want to name both the current Windows and Mac versions of Safari the same thing, but an explanation would have be a nice touch. No?

hi, when setting Safari, what is the meaning of "Open New Tabs in Background"? Thank you.

Previously, whenever you wanted to open a new browser window in mobile Safari, or whenever you tapped a link from within another app, Safari created a new page.
But in IOS 5 things have changed, you now have 'open new tabs in background, a great feature.
On any browser window that you have selected in Safari or any linked windows, you open Safari on iPad/iTouch or iPhone you have tabbed browser windows and can go to any of the sites without having to open up a new safari window.
    It saves you time.

Hmmm...  So you upgraded Firefox and now neither Firefox or Safari will work?  Very weird.  I have no idea what might have gone wrong.  That said, when things start acting wierd, I always try a bit of maintenance first.  About 95% of the time, I luck out and it works.
I use the free program Onyx.  I run all the clean up routines.  Then I boot to the recovery partition (Lion) or the OS X Install Disc and repair permissions and verify/repair the hard disk.
    Hope this helps.

Yes, you can do something like that. What you would do is create a button for each image and then hide them. When I do this type of thing I place all of the buttons on a template page and then hide the template.
You can then use JavaScript to copy the icon from any of the hidden buttons to the main button that you've set up to display the image. For example, suppose you set up 10 buttons named b1, b2, b3, ...b10. The code to copy the icon from one of them to the button used to display the image (b0) would be something like this:
// Get the icon from the b3 button
    var oIcon = getField("b3").buttonGetIcon();
// Get  reference to the b0 button
    var f = getField("b0");
// Set the icon of the b0 button to the icon retrieved from the hidden button
    f.buttonSetIcon(oIcon);
    // Show the b0 button
    f.display = display.visible;
This code would go in the Mouse Up event of the smaller button.

I have purchased a new iMac, with Safari 5.0.5, but it won't retain bookmarks, I thought I can download a new Safari from Apple. So I deleted Safari from the application folder.
Then I tried to download Safari from Firefox but after finish download, what I got was a dmg file, with a pkg icon (an opened box) and it can't be installed. Same with Google Chrome.
My question is: how can I download Safari? And will it retain bookmarks?

Reinstall Safari from the Optional Installs.pkg on your Mac install disc that came with your iMac. Or in your case, you use Pacifist to extract the Safari app from the .dmg file.
    To bookmark a webpage:
Go to the webpage you want to bookmark. If you use tabs, you can open multiple webpages in tabs to bookmark them as a collection.
Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark, or Bookmarks > “Add Bookmarks for These Tabs.”
Type a name for the bookmark or collection in the dialog that appears.
Specify where you want to keep the bookmark or collection. You can add it to the bookmarks bar, the Bookmarks menu, or to a collection if you have created any.
    Click Add.
To add a bookmark quickly, click the Add button in the toolbar, or drag the webpage’s icon from the address field to the bookmarks bar.
To see your bookmarks, choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks.
In the future, rather then deleting an app, come here and ask for help first. More times then not, you will save yourself time and trouble.

First try resetting your iPod.  Nothing will be lost:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Next restore the iPod from backup via iTunes on your computer.
    - Lastly. restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod since there may be corruption that is now in the backup.

  • How to install new version of safari and delete old one

I am not sure what pieces of info are needed to help me so please be patient. Basically my hotmail is no longer working, telling me I need to download a new version of safari so I downloaded safari 3.12 however it is still not working on hotmail. I am not sure how to apply/install the new version of safari and get rid of the old version. If anyone knows how to help me...it is much appreciated...be specific as I seem to be mac-******** at times
    Thanks.

    Hello ec:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
As far as I know, you cannot download Safari and reinstall it successfully. Install Safari from your software install DVD and then run software update.
I do not use Hotmail, so I have no information about that platform.

  • What safari is compatable with 10.3.9?

I lost my Safari and was wondering what safari is compatable with 10.3.9? and where can i find the download?

The current Safari version is the primary one available
from the Apple downloads page online. That is not a
    supported version for Panther 10.3.9.
Since the Combo 10.3.9 update file changes the setting
and other info in Panther from that of the original install
disc, there may be more issues from trying to revert or
get another (older) Safari from the Installer via Pacifist.
Here is a link with some ideas on the process, there are
additional links inside it, which may not work now. It is
not a new one, but does show the complexities of this
matter and it should not be taken to lightly...
"Download Safari for 10.3.9" - more than it seems:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6872724
The older version which came in the Panther retail
installer disc may be extracted if you happen upon
the correct version of a utility which is intended on
allowing one to extract and install specific packets
from the main installer disc; not run the whole thing.
The utility will run limited, but free. It has quirks.
It can pull the older Safari from an Install disc.
    See Charlessoft: http://www.charlessoft.com/
There are other nice browsers, Camino will do
well in Panther 10.3.9 and it can also assign a
browser as default in much the same ways as
    Safari did for OS X.
An archive & install (then update) may be the next
best thing; or if you have a clone of the system in
previous form, you could clone sections of the OS
back and then see if the Safari from there'd work.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MacBook Pro Freezing when opening new tab in Safari - MY SOLUTION

    All,
I have been battling with a Safari issue for months; I have seen many postings of the same and similar problems.
Problem when opening a new tab in Safari the computer completely froze up. Sometimes the curser still moved around but could not select anything, requiring a hard reset. Sometime the screen went blue and the computer reset on its own. Crashed at least once daily.
I thought it might be OSX, Safari or Flash; however I upgraded each of those several times with no major progress. Note adobe is constantly upgrading flash and some recommended you should use their uninstaller before upgrading.
One thing I noticed when opening a new tab was that the tab was a bit slow in opening, taking a few seconds with a hiccup to show "top sites." I got suspicious when I saw the lead picture of one site with a blank adobe flash warning showing up for a second or two... My system is a few years old but has a fast drive, lots of memory and is optimized for speeeed.
    MY SOLUTION>>>
So I tried changing how the new tab showed up by selecting: Safari>Preferences>General>New Tabs Open With Empty Page. I think that worked but don't remember. I really missed the "top sites" preview. So I put that back and just killed the flash ridden site from the "top sites" (just open a tab, click edit at the bottom left corner of the tab then click on "x" for the suspect site).
FYI - The suspect site administrator told the browser could be storing a corrupt cookie; I reset Safari and ran OnyX so am not sure if that is the issue but it might be a clue for others.
FYII - I think the problem is related to flash implementations on some sites if that was not clear in the text
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Scooter!
Thanks for posting a Presuming "SOLUTION"
I don't have these problems as you described, but did you drag the Cookies.plist to the desktop and relaunch Safari an try to open a NEW TAP.
What happens now ... is Safari handling opening a new tap from the TOP SITE window?
    Post back ...

  • New problem w/ Safari opening gifs

I am having a new problem with Safari that I didn't have a couple months ago. On a certain websites if I open an image of a product to make it bigger, instead of a larger image I now get a window opening with no image. Instead in the example below all I seem to get is an image 4x4 pixels (at least that is what the new window title says). This occurs with any browser I have tried in OS X including iCab, Opera, and Firefox. However, using OS 9 Classic (and Windows), all the browsers bring up the enlarged image perfectly. My current settings have Javascript on and popup windows are allowed. I can't figure out what is going on here. Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.
Here is a link to an example where at the bottom there are images to enlarge a watch:
    http://www.ireplicastore.com/BR01-97-Power-Reserve/SS-Casing-White-Dial.html

You don't need to disable your pop-up blocker. All the small images have is a link to a larger .jpg image on their server. I have no problem viewing them.
So, having said that and noted that you are also on a G5 and 10.4.11, I can suggest the following:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2, but please see my footnote).
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
The new RealPlayer Plus (v.11) is still in beta and therefore free, but works well on Tiger. It includes a download function, and you can get that here:
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back.
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

It was suggested to me that I upgrade my OS to Snow Leopard so I could update to the newer version of Itunes so I could use it with my son's new Mini Ipad.  I just received OSX SL 10.6.3 and updated my computer.  Now I can't access Safari because it says the version is not supported.  Do I need to upgrade the OS again, or is there a newer version of Safari somewhere?  I am getting tired of what feels like chasing my tail.  How do I just get my computer updated so I am not constantly chasing the newer version of one thing that affects everything else on the computer?

How do I just get my computer updated so I am not constantly chasing the newer version of one thing that affects everything else on the computer?
Switch to Windows 7 PC, ten years of no changes and no upgrade games.
Windows 7 Pro+ even runs XP programs.
Seriously, run Software Update under the Apple menu, it will bring you up to 10.6.8 and Safari 5.7.1, iTunes 11.
However Safari 6 is only on OS X 10.7 and 10.8, so since because of that, you should switch to Chrome or Firefox for 10.6.8
Your machine is likely too old to run 10.8, even if it can, it likely will be slow and require more RAM etc.

  • Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?

Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?  I use this for my mobile, on-site auto repair business and not being able to call up repair and diagnostic info and reference for some cars is troublesome for sure. It works fine on the computer and I have installed a remote desktop app as a workaround but it is unreliable because the desktop is not business dedicated and may be off or in use at the time. So is there a known fix for this?
Let me paint a more descriptive picture, visualize 4 drop down selection menus, first one is for year, next one is for make, 3rd one is model and the last one is for engine size/type. If I wanted to choose a 2012 vehicle it wont work because it is the top selection on the list. This can be forced by selecting any other year and then coming back to 2012. Ok fine, but then let's say I wanted to choose Acura as the make, well it won't take it because again it's the top selection. Again you work around it be selecting any other make and coming back to Acura. Ok now select the model, same trend follows. But now since most Acura vehicles come with dedicated engines and no optional engines I have only 1 selection in that final drop down menu and it will not take my selection and therefore never let me proceed to the info I need.
This is also true when ordering parts from my wholesaler's website, they use drop downs and I can only get to that last drop down and then I'm stuck. This is blindingly frustrating, what options do I have. I'm not opposed to any avenue at this point.

Did you ever figure this out? I bought my iPad last week to use in my business as well. I assume you are trying to use alldata? That is where I noticed this same issue. I had problems with identifix working with safari but downloaded a different browser and that works fine. Alldata does not work with either browser. The main difference is that on identifix if there is only one engine selection, it automatically selects the only option and continues to the home page. With alldata you have to make the selection manually even if there is only one option. Honestly if I can't get this to work I am going to return the iPad as it looses a significant amount of usefulness to men

It's not necessary to change the Command N keystroke..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
