New SATA drive showing as IDE drive in Bios

Just wanted to hear from some of you guys...not sure if this is right but seems weird for the bios to say my SATA drive is IDE..when its going through bios or if your selecting which drive to boot to first its listed as an IDE drive..could someone please tell me if this is correct...

This is correct.

  • K8n Neo2 Plat Sata Raid 0 and IDE drive - Board won't detect IDE

I have my K8n Neo2 Platinum board configured just fine for 2 WD raptor sata drives in raid 0.  However, I need to add more space so I went out and got a Seagate 180gb IDE drive.  I plug it into the primary IDE slot and the board won't detect the new hard drive.  I have 2 DVD-ROM drives working fine in the Secondary IDE slot.  Why won't the K8n detect what is plugged into the primary IDE slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jeff

    Okay...
First, remove both of your DVD Drives and try connecting the new HD to the Secondary IDE Interface as master.  Use 'cable-select'.  If the drive then works, leave everything set to cable-select, and try installing the HD as master, and one DVD drive as slave, on the primary channel.   Next, set the other DVD drive to cable select, and install it on the secondary interface as a slave.
If the drive is still not detected after removing both DVD Drives, then try installing the DVD Drives onto the primary interface.  If they work, then you've most likely got a bad HDD.  If they don't...  your mainboard may be bad.

  • SATA + OLD IDE DRIVE=BSOD

I bought a new SATA drive and need to transfer files to it from my old
IDE drive. The IDE drive doesn't have any OS on it, it was previously a
slave drive used to store files.
I hooked up the SATA drive, installed XP, everything works fine. But,
when I hook in the IDE drive--as either a master or slave--the system
loads all the way up till I can see the desktop, and then immediately
    crashes with a B.S.O.D.
Before the SATA drive was installed, the IDE drive in question was a
slave drive and worked fine (another IDE drive was the master).
What is causing this problem, and how can I fix it?

Also include the powersupply specs including the max amps of the 3.3v 5v and 12v rails. This info can be found on a sticker on the side of the psu.

  • Boot problems with second Arch install on an IDE drive

I have two SATA II drives and two IDE drives (one HDD and one optical) in my box. I had Arch installed on first SATA II drive (/dev/sda). I changed the mkinitcpio files to load sata modules before pata, and that works okay. So, my IDE HDD is now /dev/sdc
However, I installed a second Arch onto the /dev/sdc (IDE) and it won't boot. It goes through booting process and hangs at checking the drives claiming that the /dev/sda3 has bad superblock. Now, this is really odd, because /dev/sda3 is a SWAP partition, and the init script is trying to run e2fsck on it.
How do I fix this? Should I simply (somehow) disable the filesystem check?
(Before you ask, I need the second Arch to build a LiveCD.)

It's correctly identified as Linux Swap partition. Besides, the first Arch install is still working with that swap partition reporting no problems at boot time.

  • New hard drive shows in Bios and device manager but not in windows explorer in windows 7

I have added a new sata 500gig hard drive and it is recognised in the bios, but is not recognised by windows explorer, though the disk is showing in device manager as a hard drive . I have followed the example on the forum by going to computer management and rescanning disks, to no avail.
Any ideas how I can get to use the drive?
My comp is a packard bell and all the details are here:-  http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/?sn=845014390330&g=1400
    Hope someone can help.
    Rob

Thanks Dale (and everyone else). A cure! Sorry I did not reply earlier, but have been trying all known fixes to no avail... However. The second of your links in the last reply of yours (starting, New Drive or mapped network drive) worked with a slight variation in windows7, as follows is how I achieved joy.
Right-click My Computer , and then click Manage .
Under Computer Management (Local) , click Disk Management .
This far is as above, then I'll add comments to the existing help to show my variant.
In the list of drives in the right pane, right-click the new drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Path(s) .
Here it still did not show the drive in the right window, but below it there is a second window listing disks and one of them unallocated and without a drive letter was my new drive.  IMPORTANT! This set of info may not be apparent unless you enlarge the box by dragging it, as the default only shows the top box (so I have missed it until now on all my searching). Right clicking on this gave a set of obvious choices to create a choice of drive letter, format and options (NTFS etc) and this created the drive for me. I am sorry I am vague on the box choices, but on right selecting a live drive it doesn't bring up the "unallocated" box choices again. Many thanks and I hope my variant helps anyone else with a similar prob. Thanks again - Rob
Click Change , and in the drop-down box, select a drive letter for the new drive that is not assigned to a mapped network drive.
Click OK , and then click OK again.

  • MacPro Intel IDE drives to SATA ??

I have a MacPro that I purchased new in 2008 with 2.8 GHz Xeons and GeForce 8800 video cards with SATA hard drives BUT with IDE optical drives and I want them to be SATA also for my BluRay burner rather than have to put the BRD in my Windows machine which I want to sell.
So can someone give me advice on the quick and easy way to convert my MacPro from IDE optical drives (two bays) to SATA?
Thanks in advance to those who respond.

PCI-X is an old PCI specification
PCIe or PCI Express is what you have to have.
Most people use PCIe cards for external drives, not internal. There are exceptions like SSD drives people often put in that lower optical bay, and go with external BR.
My PC, I use Intel RAID Storage Manager for the hard drives. The Mac Pro uses the basic Intel Skulltrail platform reference design motherboard wtih its support for dual Xeon and such. Wouldn't be impossible to have RAID via motherboard, though software RAID0 is fine anyway as it is.
OWC is the best place to find your way around. That way takes the worry out and they have install videos for most major items. They have your BR and SATA optical drives and most (but not all) hard drive controllers.
Why not SATA? Did they provide better performance in late 2007, when the system was being engineered? had IDE hit a roadblock and DVDs needed more bandwidth than available?

  • My system won't boot past POST after I plugged in my new SATA drive. (SATA noob

    I have a MSI K8n Neo 2 Platinum mobo with a Athlon64 +3500 and 1gig dual channel DDR 400. I currently have 2 drives set up a IDE primary (MAxtor 6Y120) and a IDE slave (Maxtor 6L080).
    I recently purchased a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer.
It is my first SATA drive ever so non the less I am a newb. I want to use it as a non Raid media storage device while my primary IDE remains my boot OS drive.
I plugged the SATA in to the sata one port and powered it. I enabled the SATA in the bios with RAID disabled. When the system boots up it does the memory chech and lists all the IDE devices. Then it says "Detecting IDE drives..." and just hangs there. The new drive spins so it definatly has power but occasionaly it make occasional clicking sounds.
Once it actually booted up and windows detected it. I decided to reboot it just to play it safe but it never would get past post screen again. I can boot up the system normally when I unplug the SATA cable.
Please help I need to know if I am doing something wrong or I should RMA the drive. THANK YOU!

  • Existing IDE drive into a new G5?

I'm considering buying a new G5 (intel Mac) or getting a used G5 (non-intel) and wondered if I can simply put my exising IDE drive from a G4 into either the intel mac or into a late-model G5? That would save me a lot of time re-installing software into a new machine.
    Thanks.

One way would be to get SATA-ATA power and data adaptor cables, since the G5s only accept SATA drives.
Here's one example; you might be able to shop around for a cheaper deal.
Or, you could just pick up a relatively cheap 3.5" ATA enclosure and use it as an external Firewire drive.

  • G4 MDD supports SATA internal drives or ATA/IDE

    hi all
I'm looking to add more internal hard drive power into my G4 MDD and was curious if it supports only ATA/IDE drives or can I add SATA internal drives? I was told it can handle larger than 120GB hard drives and will I need to get a fan to cool them down? Thanks, Web dude

you talk about putting larger hard drives on rear bays only
I looked over what I wrote and don't see where I said that. Can you clarify?
Maximum theorectical data transfer rates for ATA100 (aka ATA-6) are a little faster than ATA66) aka ATA-5) but only if the hard drive is fast enough to take advantage--most new ones are more than that at ATA133. One Wikipedia article I read says that, in the Windows world, ATA66 commonly has drive size limitations of 137GB due to the OS and drive controller limitations. I've not seen this in Macs. Nothing I've seen here or elsewhere says you can't put big drives in the front bay.
I personally like to keep the boot drive in the rear bay in case that drive is fast enough to take full advantage of the faster bus. As 2 x 250G is enough space for me today, I tend to use the front bays as temporary mounts when pulling data off drives from some of our older Macs. Those often end up being smaller, older drives between 10G and 120G.

  • RS480M2 sees IDE drive but not SATA drive

I had never had any problems with my computer until now. I installed a Samsung 250GB IDE drive internally besides my usual Samsung 80GB SATA drive but the BIOS does not see the SATA (which is connected to IDE Controller), it only recognizes the new IDE (connected to Channel 0 Master). I also have a LiteOn CD connected to Channel 1 and it is OK. The SATA drive was working normally before as the only drive and I also know the new IDE drive works because I used it on an external enclosure as a backup. Any ideas?

You may need to try cable select instead.

  • How to Adapt my IDE Drive to a New Computer?

I know this isn't the right forum, but I have a removable IDE hard drive bay that I'm installing in my new computer. The new computer has SATA jacks and PCIe jacks. I need to adapt my IDE drives to work with the new computer. any ideas? Specific brands?

You're pretty much out of luck, as far as IDE hard drives are concerned. Sure, you can buy adapters for your IDE drives - but they use bridge converter chips that may cause compatibility issues with modern systems. And even with the adapters, you are limited to the number of SATA ports on the motherboard or controller card (which generally allows only one disk per port).

  • KM4M-V + SATA Drive, Hangs at Boot, Tried IDE Drive and During Setup, Powers Off

I bought 2 KM4M-V boards to upgrade my ailing 1880+ systems. Then realized I needed DDR as well so went back for that and also decided to update CPU's to Sempron 2600+. Also picked up Seagate 80Gb SATA and a 350 watt PSU (Alaska ATX 350 P4) which was recommened for this board by the dealer.
I am having so much trouble I am about to throw in the towel. Since I am 'upgrading' everything in the system except the CDRom drive I should have just started all over with 64-bit systems but now I am kind of stuck since it is over 30 days ago I got the MB's.
    Problem 1:
Using only the single SATA drive I never could get past the DMI Pool data line in Setup, it would just hang there. I read all about how to deal with SATA drives with this or similar boards here. SATA is enabled in BIOS but I can never get to the F6 load drivers step to try that. If I remove the SATA cable Setup will procede so it is something with the Seagate possibly? No jumpers needed and no preparation done to the drive. BIOS does not see the drive but the setup RAID utility does see it but says I cannot set up single drive as RAID of course, but it does report proper data about the drive. Never can get past Bios POST with SATA drive hooked up (channel 0 or 1)
Finally gave up on that and ran into Problem 2:
Put an older IDE drive in as only HD and XP Windows setup gets cranking along coping files then the system just dies. Like some pulled the plug suddenly. Happen every time. I checked for heat problems. Even ran through memory tests (SIMMTESTER), tried swapping cables, plugs and wall circuits. It dies every time no matter what.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

DMI pool data? When changing mobo but keeping hard disk one should do a repair install of Windows and install the mobo drivers for the new mobo.
I originally wanted to keep the Windows install but decided to remove original C drive and save for eventual D drive use. A repair install warns you that your 'My Documents' folder 'may' be deleted and I didn't want to risk it as I have years and years of photos I didn't want to risk losing.

Bios is happy with WD drive as single master on one channel and CDRom as single master on the other (No jumper on Drive- osnavi). Windows install starts out just fine with my intention of creating a new partition but then it just BOOM, power off. My preference is to use the new SATA Baracuda as system drive and my old IDE C drive as D drive...

I have bought 785GTM-E45, and installed a sata hdd and a IDE dvd drive on it.  the sata is set to ahci mode.  After install xp using f6 method and install all the drivers, I cannot find the dvd drive at all in windows.  I have to go into bios to set the sata ports back to IDE model to make the dvd appear again.

It is just annoying that this board has so many issues.  No vcore change, no gpu voltage change, v8 bios will freeze if entering processor details, and the issue in this current topic.  I have used at least three other brands' boards and never had any issue before.  Oh my, MSI...

  • Added Hybrid SATA drive to ThinkCentre - does not recognize old IDE drive - Suggestions?

I added a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive to my old ThinkCentre 808532U.  I removed the jumper from the old IDE drive so it would be considered the secondary.  I installed Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on the hybrid SATA.  The old IDE had Windows XP.  I want to use the old IDE drive as the secondary so I can access the data, pictures, etc.  I do NOT want to boot XP. The system boots up fine with Windows 7.  However, the system does not recognize the old IDE drive.  I have gone into BIOS and changed the Parallel ATA to Secondary.  The system still does not recognize the old IDE drive.   Can someone provide recommendations? Thanks,Napp

I finally experimented enough that I found the solution!  I tried putting all the IDE drives into Startup even though none showed any hardware assigned.  I set Parallel ATA to Both.  My machine  would start up but not show the Logo screen or any screen for that matter.  I put a Windows 7 install disk into the DVD ROM and got the Logo screen.  I F1'd back into BIOS and suddenly two of the IDE entries in Startup were populated with the DVD drives.  I set the order I wanted in Startup and saved the configuration.  When Windows started it installed drivers for two devices.  I looked into Computer and all the drives were listed!!!!!!!!!!!   So now after several long nights I have my system configured properly for all the drives and all Windows 7 updates applied.  I am waiting for delivery of a 256M graphics adapter and a gigabit ethernet adapter to see if I can increase performance.  Time to sleep now..............

  • IDE drives not recognized with SATA as boot drive

    Greetings All,
I have a new 865PE Neo2-P that has a 120 Gig SATA drive as its main boot drive. It's loaded with WinXP Home.  I'm trying to add two IDE hard drives from my previous system to the on-board controller, and it simply refuses to recognize them at all.
I've read the FAQ, the manual, previous posts, etc., and I've tried the different BIOS settings suggested in the forum, and nothing seems to work.  The only thing I haven't been able to do as posted was to "set my SATA drive as the boot drive".  The boot selections in the BIOS only list floppy, IDE-0, and some boot manager. Not sure if the boot manager was installed by my local PC assembler or not.
The PC shipped with the BIOS settings MSI recommends on page 3-22 and 3-23 for users wanting to use both SATA and IDE devices.  That is to say:
    Legacy Mode
    P-ATA only
    SATA Keep Yes
    PATA Channel Both
    SATA Ports P0-3rd/P1-4th
Changing the BIOS settings only seems to lose the DVD/CD drives, and the system wants to boot off of the IDE's rather than boot from the SATA.
What the ??!! is going on here?  Why is it so difficult to get this MB to recognize IDE devices?  I've never had this much difficulty before with any MB's, and I'm getting very frustrated.
    What should I do next?

OK, I checked my notes.  I did try these two BIOS settings without it working:
ATA On CHip Operate Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA only
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
Set SATA as RAID: No(Only available in FIS2R/FISR versions only)
    or
ATA On CHip Operate Mode: Native
    ATA Config: PATA only
    SATA Keep Enabled: Yes
Set SATA as RAID: No(Only available in FIS2R/FISR versions only)
Now, tonight I decided to try a different cable just to eliminate that. What I discovered is that the IDE1 socket is "out of spec". There are no bent pins, but the rightmost three columns of pins are larger than the others, too large for any IDE cable, and consequently it doesn't fit snugly in the socket!! (I tried plugging the MSI supplied cable from the DVD drive into that socket as well and it wouldn't fit.) I never noticed this before as I was pressing the cable in the socket as far as it would go.
I will talk to my local manufacturer to see about getting a replacement board. It's clearly messed up. Thank you MSI for the swell quality control.
    Derek
