New Satellite C660 - Rattles and has Bad Sectors?

Hi, I have just bought a C660, but I'm a bit concerned by a couple of things.
First, every time I type there's a rattling noise coming from within the laptop - that doesn't seem right, but I thought I'd check whether everyone has that?
Second, the hard disk reports more than 2,700 bad sectors in it's SMART data. For a brand new disk this seems very poor! Have I got one that's been dropped or something?
Thanks in advance for any comments!
Mark

Hi
The strange noise might be coming from the HDD. This would also explain the bad sectors on the HDD.
Try to test the HDD using an tool like Drive Fitness Test. Its freeware so you can download this from different pages
If some problems would be detected I would recommend replacing the HDD.
Warranty seems to be valid, so ASP should be contacted to get such HDD

  • [SOLVED] Completly format a second HDD, and mark bad sectors.

    Hi, all!
I couldn't see a more appropriate place to post this, as it didn't seem right to put it in 'Kernel/ Hardware'. My apologies if it is in the wrong place.
I have a second hard disk drive in my PC and when I use it, it occasionally gives 'bad sector' errors. The hard drive is not currently used, but until I buy a replacement, I was wondering whether it is possible to do a 'deep' format of the disk, which would mark bad sectors. These sectors could then be ignored by future installations.
    Is this possible?
Would I have to do it as part of normal partitioning, ie, when setting-up ext4 partitions, etc?
I'd prefer to mark the sectors at a deeper evel, so I don't have to think about it when I do future installs on that disk.
    Any help/ advice appreciated.
    Chris.

If the disk you are planning to use already has bad sectors visible to the user then you better get rid of it. Modern hard disks automatically reallocate bad sectors when they are found, if too many bad sectors have been found and there are no more spare sectors to reallocate the bad ones then it's way past time to replace the disk.
That said, you can always tell mkfs.whatever to search for and avoid damaged sectors (mkfs.whatever will call badblocks to search for and report the damaged sectors). You will be gambling with your data though, because it is quite probable that more bad sectors will develop over time.

New version is fuzzy and has shadows and is very hard on my eyes.

Hi Jeff I have uninstalled Muse from my applications and have tried to download the new version but it displays a message 'file not found'. I have included a screenshot.

  • My SSD has bad sectors

QuestionMy SSD has a lot of bad sectors. Do I need to replace it?
AnswerWith a traditional hard drive, that is often the case, but with an SSD things are a bit different. Due to the nature of flash technology it's normal to have a small number of bad sectors on an SSD, and as long as the number of bad sectors remains constant there is no reason for concern. The firmware on the SSD keeps track of all bad sectors and marks them as unusable. So even though the bad sectors are present on the drive they never come into play, and data is never written to them.
The easiest way to keep track of the number of bad sectors on an SSD is to run ChkDsk (short for "check disk") in Windows. After checking the drive, ChkDsk will report the number of bad sectors it found. Simply make a note of what that number is, and run ChkDsk again after a couple of days.
If the number of bad sectors remains the same, all is well.

Hy I have also problem with my Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1.I can't format drive or make it usable again. I tried with linux, winternals, windows always same result. I can delete partition but I can't make new one or if I do, I then can't format it. I manage to update firmware to MU02 and Storage Executive says that drive is ok and I even succeeded to sanitaze the drive, but in the end I always stuck with Format not Complete...  can you help me?

  • New Satellite C660-1F1 windows 64-bit -cant use graphics editing software

Hi Guys....any help appreciated...this is the message I sent to Toshiba support but they are taking their time getting back to me:
    Important information: Satellite C660-1F1
    Key Features
    - Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (pre-installed, Toshiba-HDD recovery)
    - Intel Core i3-380M Processor
    - DVD-SuperMulti +-R (Double Layer)
    - 2048 MB DDR3 RAM (1066MHz)
    - 39.6cm (15.6") TruBrite HD (1366 x 768) High Brightness display with LED backlight with 16:9 aspect ratio
Hi... I purchased my laptop about a month ago from Argos and it has a 2 year warranty. I have one big problem - the 2 main graphics editing programmes that I use do not work. Both Corel Paintshop Photo Pro x3 and Adobe CS5 can both be installed and opened but as soon as I try to save a photo or edit a photo both of the programmes crash and i have to close it down by using end task in task manager.
This happened when I installed the full versions of both programmes which I purchased and it also happens when you download the trial versions from both the Corel and the Adobe download sites. I have been on so many help forums for both adobe and corel and the most helpful pointer came from one of the designers at Adobe - a Chris Cox.
He very logically stated that as it happened in both of these 2 graphics editing packages that it was most likely a problem with the graphics card drivers or the actual graphics card hardware. I purchased a 64-bit operating system to handle precisely these 2 programmes which can be exhausting on the system. I know i only have 2 GB RAM at the moment but it has been happening with other people...some who even have 8GB and 16GB of RAM which is what I will have in the next few weeks. However, not if I cannot rectify this problem. Please can you help/advise the best solution. This seems to be a problem only with the 64-bit systems. Both Adobe and Corel are 64-bit compatible.
There is also a message that appears when I open Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended....which is as follows:
...."Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements, Check the video card manufacturers website for the latest software."
I then click that message away ....use the programme, edit something, try to save and it crashes. I have gone through all troubleshooting directions and ran countless diagnostics but there only seems to be one common denominator between the 2 different programmes and that is my Toshiba laptop.... I even tried installing another large photo editing software package to test it and I had the same result - an application crash.
Please help! Thanking you in advance.
    Kind regards
    John

    Hello John
Have you already got some answer from Toshiba?
What to say my friend? In my opinion the best advice you can get from Corel and Adobe. They have best experience with own product and have probably tested them on different hardware platforms.
Notebook manufacturers offer different notebook models with different hardware configurations. Some of them are cheap and offered with average hardware. The performance is not the best but good enough for every day activities like internet, office, mailing and so on.
On other hand there are notebooks with excellent and powerful hardware. Very often such notebooks cost twice as much as cheap low budget products.
Please dont understand me wrong but your C notebook is not the best one for usage with such powerful software.
I really dont know what Toshiba can do about it. I can imagine that you need other graphic driver but graphic driver support for mobile computers is pretty limited and I dont think you can do much about that.
What you can try is to download and install driver from graphic card manufacturer but you must do this on your own risk.
Sorry friend but I dont have any other advice for you. I just think youve bought wrong notebook for such complex graphic operations. 2 GB RAM? I dont know.
    Good luck.

  • Windows 7 will not boot on new Satellite C660-195

    Hi,
    I have just purchased a Toshiba Satellite C660-195 with Windows 7 pre-installed.
This morning I have switched it on and it came up with a black box with x:windows\system32\drvload.exe in it. This box then disappeared and Startup Repair kicked in. It then told me Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. The advice was to remove any device which had been recently attached to the laptop (such as a webcam or music device) but I have not installed any hardware or devices. I clicked finish and it shut down the laptop.
I switched it on again and the same thing happened (again and again!)
One forum suggests trying the following: Click the 'view advanced options for system recovery and support' link which asks me to choose my keyboard configuration but then when I do & click next it tells me "You must log in to access system recovery options" I am never given the option to log in!!
When accessing the Advanced Startup options using F8 I am still unable to solve this problem. The same thing (above) happens when I try to start in all Safe modes, Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), Debugging mode, Start Windows normally etc. I just don't understand it.
Upon searching other forums they have suggested holding down zero whilst switching on and then chosing Windows 7 to restore the laptop to its factory settings but the same thing happens - it just shows the black screen with x:windows\system32\drvload.exe then launched Startup Repair, which does not fix the problem.
I do not have a windows 7 disk to restore from as I only purchased the laptop 6 days ago and have not had time to do one yet. Also, the laptop should have the restore/recovery on its hard drive but I cannot access it to restore windows.
I am only a home user so do not understand all the technical speak. Please can someone help me?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your prompt reply.
Unfortunately I have already tried this and it does not work.
in F8 I can chose 'Repair your Computer' as in screen shot 1.
I can chose my keyboard configuration as in screen shot 2 and when I click 'Next'
I am presented with the message "You must log in to access System Recovery Options. If you are having trouble logging in please contact your computer administrator . . . . . . ." etc
It does not give me the option to log in like screen shot 3 so I cannot progress.
    Any further ideas gratefully received!

  • Satellite C660 keyboard and mouse not working

I have a Satellite C660 that is about to exit the window.
The list of problems are as follows:
    Keyboard doesn't work
Mouse pad and button's don't work
USB mouse and keyboard don't work (but light up with power)
It also likes to turn itself off randomly when the battery in but this is the least of the problems.
any ideas as to why this is doing this and what can be done to fix it will be much appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi
Im wondering about your statement about external USB mouse and keyboard.
I thought that your problem was related to faulty touchpad module and internal keyboard but now Im thinking that this cannot be the case since the external USB keyboard does not work as well as the external USB mouse.
Probably its more serious hardware malfunction: maybe something related to the motherboard??? Who knows an hardware diagnostic test needs to be done to confirm this
Just one question: are you able to access the BIOS? I mean does the F2 keyboard button work in order to access the BIOS?

  • Wrong language loaded on new Satellite C660-2DL

    Hi All,
Brand new C660-2DL, Some how the wrong language (Finnish) got loaded at startup,is there anyway back? it should have been English. I think i shall be dead if i don't find a cure!!!
All idears wellcome (Don't forget though everything is in Finnish.Thank you.
    Citycoach John

    Hi
From my experience some units are preinstalled with an image which contains Windows OS in different languages. While first boot you should be able to choose your favorite language and the other languages would be canceled.
Try this: power up the unit, press F8 and choose Repair.
Then choose HDD recover and check if you could choose other language.
If this would not be possible then create a image using the recover disk creator and start the recovery using this disk. Then check if you can change the language.

  • Satellite C660 freezes and can only turn it off

My laptops is Satellite C660D with windows 7.
I had it for a month when it started freezing 3/4 minutes after I logged on, being totally unresponsive with the keyboard not working or ctrl+alt+del or the touch pad, so the only thing i could do was turn it off.
The freezing happened everytime I was on my laptop, I used system restore with put my laptop back to factory conditions and it stopped freezing. This was in June, now it has started doing exactly the same thing it did before, freezing and being unresponsive!
My laptop doesn't freeze in safe mode, does anyone know what the problem is and why it continues to freeze a month after restoring my laptop to factory condition?
    Thanks

On this virtual way it is not possible to offer exact diagnostic but it must be software related issue. maybe is this freezing issue related to some software that you have installed or maybe to Microsoft updates.
What you can do is to start your notebook in safe mode and then configure start-up option. With other words to define which applications, tools aor utilities should start with Windows 7.
Do it please following THIS or THIS instructions. Remove check mark in front of all software not related to Toshiba and that is completely useless (can be started additionally).

  • New HP EVA6000 SAN and now bad database performance problems

    Hello,
we changed our SAN Hardware to a HP EVA6000 and moved all Data to there.
It is intended that storagesystem is for all Servers (File/Print, Exchange, Oracle Databases and MSSQL Databases).
According to the best practice papers of HP we created one big discgroup (fata harddiscs) and created virtual discs for our servers.
After doing this the database performance was terrible bad!
Especially the multiple random IO is absolutely worse.
As a first countermeasure we created a second discgroup on faster harddiscs and moved the database contents to there. We analyzed the IO and moved several database file to different virtual discs.
The performance is better now, but still not like the 4 year old SAN System!
Of course we questioned HP and even let them do a performance analysis but up to now we have no solution... The performance analysis report will be available on thursday.
Does anybody had the same experience or how did you configure the Database and EVA SAN to work with an appropiate performance?

    Hi,
I'm not an Oracle person, but do work with EVA SAN's.
Your 48 FATA disk, disk group is capable of 4800 I/O operations per second [48 x 100] but the disks are only rated for 30% duty cycle and spin at 7200 rpm.
The 16 FC drive Disk Group I/O operations rating depends on the speed the disks spin at. 10K rpm disks are rated at 130 I/O per sec [2080 for the group] and if they are 15K rpm disks then 170 I/O per sec [2720 for the group]. Both are rated for 100% duty cycle.
I seem to recall having have read somewhere that Oracle prefers to have it's logs on separate storage to it's data.
If your shelves had the spare disk slots I would put in 72 GB 15K rpm disks up to the capacity required {+ overhead } + head room for reasonably predictable growth over the anticpated life of the equipment.
Here is a link to the HP Best Practice guide for EVA 4/6/8000's
    http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA0-2787ENW.pdf
I hope this helps you understand the storage that you are working with a bit better. The old saying of "more heads make for better performance" is still true, however budget can have some affect in performance. ;-)

sorry yes i ment 16g   it still don't make any sence on why they choose to place a front camera on the 16g and not one on the back as well....NOT EVERYONE takes selfies... thank you for the comparision info...but apple is falling short, they charge way to much money for this item...thanks for the respond...

I have tried to start windows and press F8 so I can go back to factory settings, but it doesn't offer me a restore option. Please can anyone help ?

Im afraid something is screwed up. I recommend you to bring it back to your local dealer and ask for replacement.
As far as I know such errors and issues cannot be fixed by users.

  • Satellite C660-1ZM Win 7 64bit: mousepad and USB - "code 52" driver error

    Hello,
Having recently set up a new Satellite C660-1ZM running Windows 7 64bit (upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate) for a friend, the mousepad and USB ports have suddenly stopped working. The drivers show an exclamation mark against them and the error is "code 52" which is related to driver signing. Windows doesn't seem to recognise the driver signatures for the published drivers that came on the machine's pre-installed disc, so the devices don't work. I've updated the drivers (Intel chipset [which includes USB]; Synaptics touchpad) to the latest ones publised on the Toshiba web site - and we have the same problem.
Pressing F8 on boot allows you to select "disable checking of driver signing" in the WIndows 7 boot options, which then enables the drivers and all is well, until you reboot - at which point you have to hit F8 again.
I think that one of the many recent Windows updates has somehow messed things up, but we can't easily prove that. The machine worked fine for a week or so, then the mousepad suddenly quit working around 8th August 2012.
    1) Are there valid signed drivers that pass whatever checks Microsoft impose on driver signing, including whatever checks they've potentially just imposed via some recently inflicted update?
    2) Does anyone know exactly how to disable the checking of driver signing permanently, so that a reboot will not require the F8 keypress and so on?
Uninstalling the mousepad driver and rebooting gives the basic mouse functionality, without the Synaptics cleverness. However, the USB ports still don't work because their driver doesn't load, so an external mouse doesn't work.
It's an infernal nusiance. Driving the system off the keyboard to uninstall drivers etc. is not much fun.
    Cheers, Colin.

    Hi
Did you receive the error that windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device? Usually this means the error code 52
Since the USB drivers are parts of the Windows OS, I dont think that this could be an signature issue I think some files are damaged.
Try to uninstalling/reinstalling the driver and deleting the device and its drivers from device manager before reinstalling.
Usually this should help, if not, well try to repair the system.
Power up the unit and press F8. Then choose Repair my Computer.
Now choose the first option which would help to repair the system.

  • Bad Sectors counts and repair

I have my MBP since 3 months; and notice that i have 17 Pending Bad sectors and 6 re-allocated bad sectors; so is this counts are normal or for any HDD or there are Limit no. should not exceed of Bad sectors before we diagnose as failing or failed HHD. and how i can repair it if it possible... thanks.
notice: i didn't heard any noise or freezing screen...

Where do you get this information? Disk Utility does not report such information unless a hardware error is detected. In this case you may see that the SMART report shows the drive as "Failing" rather than "Verified." If the drive truly has bad sectors then the it needs to be replaced. That means taking the computer in for repair since it's still in warranty.
