New sccm 2012 install question

I have an existing SCCM2007 Server with 3000+ clients. I just installed SCCM2012 on a new physical server.  My question is on the SCCM2012 server can I discover new clients without installing the SCCM client software. If so How.
My thinking is -->  I just want to discover them, then I can push the SCCM2012 client to them in an orderly manor.  What discovery method should I use.  Can I configure the boundaries the same as the SCCM2007 server?  Any assistance
is greatly appreciated.

Automatic push requires site assignment boundary groups. Those should not overlap. Do you really want to enable *automatic* push? Manual push can also be used (which would not require site assignment boundary groups).
You can define the same boundaries for content location though.

  • New SCCM 2012 client machines still getting SCCM 2012 SP1 client not the new SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 client

    Hi,
I've successfully (as far as I can tell) deployed SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 and all my existing clients are showing a client version of 5.00.7804.1400.  But when I setup a new client system recently I noticed that the client version was showing 5.00.7804.1000,
    and not 5.00.7804.1400.
For new client systems, do I need to redeploy the packages that were created for SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 so that the new systems get the new SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 client?
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hi,
Here's some good information to look over:
    http://sccmfaq.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/sccm-2012-include-cu-in-osd/
I haven't followed these instructions myself, since I haven't really had any good reason to include CUs during the initial installation process. I use this method instead and I've never run into any problems:

  • Migration of a Windows 2008 Domain to 2012 with SCCM 2012 installed

    Hey there,
i have been requested to migrate two 2008 Domains to 2012 with a possible merge.
Done this many times, but in this case i have a SCCM 2012 installed in the Environment.
SCCM is not covered by me, but i would like to have some aditional Background on this...
Are there any Special Points to give Attention to?
Any Hints or Ideas on this?
    Best regards
    Chris
btw: i still found, that i am not "allowed" to migrate the sccm itself, but Need to reinstall it...

Lets say you have two domains - Domain 1 and Domain 2. Both have W2008 DCs. SCCM 2012 has been deployed to Domain 1.
You could just upgrade to W2012 DCs in Domain 1, then migrate Domain 2 resources to Domain 1.In this way SCCM is unaffected.

  • Installing new SCCM 2012 infrastructure over an existing SCCM 2012 Infrastructure

    Greetings,
I currently have a standalone SCCM 2012 environment running in production.  This implementation isn't in a hierarchy and doesn't support Macs (non-PKI/HTTPS infrastructure), but is managing 1500 PC clients beautifully.
However, we have some sites out-of-state that need to be in their own Primary Site, as well as Macs across both sites need managing as well.
I have made a new environment entirely on 2012 infrastructure (2012 SCCM, 2012 Server, and 2012 SQL).  This includes a CAS at the top, a PRI for my current site, and SQL for both (all on different hardware, new names, etc.).  I've installed a PKI
infrastructure, and it's currently working fine managing the three servers it contains.
I need to start migrating all of the clients and services to the 'new' SCCM implementation, but pushing the SCCM client installs to over the old SCCM doesn't seem to change any settings.  Nor does changing site settings in the control panel of a client.
Anyone know how to configure new site settings without re-installing the SCCM clients on the 'old' infrastructure?
    Thanks~

Have you ever used group policy for site assignment? This caught me out when upgrading to a new site code. If it has ever been used, it brands the registry and no amount of tinkering in the configuration manager console or client installation methods could
    fix it.
To fix our site, I removed the offending GPO settings and set the 'GPRequestedSiteAssignmentCode', 'GPSiteAssignmentRetryDuration(Hours)' and 'GPSiteAssignmentRetryInterval(Min)' items under 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Mobile Client' to delete via GPP.
Details and symptoms I found at http://blog.coretech.dk/heh/new-agents-will-not-re-assign-to-configmgr-2012-site/.
    Jilhad,
Looks like most of the machines I was testing were indeed installed via GP before I was able to install via the console.
Deleting those registry keys allowed me to push the install over the old environment using 'Install Client' from the 'Devices' console, specifying to re-install client.
Now, I just have to figure out a script to remove those keys via SCCM
***Most of you were wondering why I was installing a CAS environment, it's really because this site doesn't conform all that well to our policies, and they will ultimately be administering their own environment.  It seemed to me that it would be easier
for me to delegate control/permissions/data using a hierarchy.  It was a tough decision, ***
Thank you all for your help!

  • SCCM 2012 Install :An error has occurred while attempting to download or verify required pre....

This is not the first time I am installing SCCM 2012 :) , however stuck at this one for some time now.
I have a lab where SCCM 2012 pre-reqs were downloaded during setup and SCCM 2012 has been installed fine.
We are doing another install for this client however SCCM download fails as ISA blocks it. Therefore we are trying to use the old setup files which were previously downloaded. However, this does not work (Files under e:\SCCM...). The log still refers to
downloading the file from the internet.
    Here's the log

  • SCCM 2012 - Install WSUS Off Box SQL

    Hi all,
installed SCCM 2012 R2 CAS on a 2012 server. The SQL is off box on a server cluster. I've installed WSUS through the 'Add Roles and Features'. I configured it to have local storage for the content and a remote DB instance
(called SQL1 on our cluster). All this worked well and the install completed as expected. I checked the SQL cluster and the "SUSDB" database was created ok.
As a final step, i went to Tools in Server Manager and launched Windows Server Update Services. This brought up the 'Complete WSUS Installation' dialogue box. I entered the exact same DB info as i had done when completing
    the initial install of WSUS:
Yet when i hit 'run' the following message returns:
The relevant bit of logging is shown here:
    2015-01-14 16:58:42  Starting service W3SVC
    2015-01-14 16:58:42  Configuring IIS...
    2015-01-14 16:58:42  Start: ConfigureWebsite
2015-01-14 16:58:42  System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070422): The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
    So i guess i have two question;
1] is this Post-installation failure something i need to fix? (I presume it is)
2] If i do need to fix this to get sccm running properly, does anyone have any suggestions as to where i should start?
    Thanks

(for three forests which have no trust relationships).
That's not a valid technical reason to have multiple primary sites at all. ConfigMgr does not care about, use, or rely on domain or forest boundaries or client membership in any way for client management. Using multiple primary sites and a CAS will
significantly increase complexity and latency, will add additional points of failure, and will increase overall operational costs.
Concur with Jason here. CAS not needed. You can add in untrusted forests to the Configmgr Console so log as you have an account with permissions in the destination forest, extend the schema, create the system management container and open up any firewall
ports that are need for communication from site server to dc.
Neil Peterson has a great set of blogs on how to achieve this
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/neilp/archive/2012/08/20/cross-forest-support-in-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-part-1.aspx
and ports are listed in this TechNet article under site server -- > Domain Controller. Ensure your RPC ports match the OS of the DC.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/hh427328.aspx
Final agreement with Jason - push to get that SQL local.

Hello I have a question.  This is all being done in an disconnected environment.  I have a virtual server that is currently running SCCM 2012 R2.  I want to put SCCM 2012 R2 on a physical server.  Should I just go with an entirely new
build or try to migrate it over?  Thanks.

Worth answering Torsten's question first. Do you have much configured in the virtual ConfigMgr site? If not then it's worth decomming it by uninstalling or otherwise look at migrating over.

  • SCCM 2012 Migration question

    My current environment status.
    1. old CM2012 host name is BACKOFFICE and all workstations/servers are using its CM Client
    2. Setup a new CM2012 host name SCCM and did the migration job successful.
    So my concerns are
    a. In SCCM in All Systems  device collection, under Client = No    which means it doesn't see the CM Client. And this is for all workstation & servers within domain that doesn't detect CM Client.   However in my old CM2012
BACKOFFICE it does have it as a yes.
    b. In SCCM I tried to right click a workstation and do Install Client and it didn't work. here is log from CCM.Log
    c) So my question is do I have to first uninstall the old CM client from BACKOFFICE off every single workstations/servers then process the push Install Client in new SCCM server ? what is the best practice ? Thanks for your help!!!

Correct, the easiest way to reassign your clients to the new environment is by reinstalling the clients.
The log file indeed indicate that the client already is installed. So, like, t.c.rich mentioned, select
Always install the client software and you should be fine (to be absolutely sure you can even also select Uninstall existing client).

  • SCCM 2012: install individual patch, not visible in monitoring

    Hi,
I was deploying a single Windows patch via SCCM 2012. Now this seems to work fine (I can see the deployment status) BUT I cannot see it in monitoring.
When I add the patch to a "Software Update Groups", I CAN see it in monitoring.
My question: what's the logic behind this? Why would I use an individual deployment if there is no monitoring built in. I'd need to know the KB then look into the software updates, select it and select the deployment status. Then also nobody sees that this
deployment exists since it doesn't appear anywhere else.
    In other words fully useless(?)
    Please advise.

    Hi,
You can follow up a single update using a report or the Software Updates view on required/installed column but not under montioring,.

  • Adding New SCCM 2012 SP1 Distribution Point To Replace Existing Distribution Point

We currently in the process of the doing a site server refresh at all our remote sites. Each remote site currently has a physical 2012 SP1 DP, and will be replaced with  a new DP at each location, and will eventually decommission the current one.
What's the best way to introduce a new DP and remove the old one?
    Thanks
    Bern

You can use this method if distributing through the WAN is not an option.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kensmith/archive/2013/08/01/migrating-the-content-library-between-distribution-points-in-sccm-2012-sp1.aspx
If you don't care, just add it to SCCM and replicate your content. Modify your boundary once done.
I hope you have a DP Group, if so, just make it member of the group and all your content will be copied. If not, you'll have to go through all your content and add it manually or script the process using PowerShell.
To remove your existing it's simply a matter of removing the "Distribution Point" role on your Server using the SCCM Console. (Administration / Site Configuration /Site Server, select your distribution point, right click Remove)

  • SCCM 2012 Installing Admin console on Windwos 7

I have installed SCCM 2012 Admin Console on a Windows 7 machine.  The console installed fine by I'm now receiving this error.
    This is from the SmsAdminUI.log

Based on the log, I recommend you use the following way to test SQL connectivity.
You can use a UDL file to test various connectivity scenarios, create a simple text file, rename the extension from TXT to UDL, fill out the necessary information on the connection tab then test the connection, and troubleshoot as necessary
    if it fails to connect.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Questions

    1. How to execute following command using batch file through SCCM 2012 R2.
    net user loaner active:no
    2. How to shutdown computers in a collection at specific time e.g 3:00 PM EST?
    Any help will be appreciated.

#1: create a package without source files and add "cmd /c net user loaner active:no" as the program's command line
#2: that one could get tricky (because clients that were shut down might receive the deployment after they are online again and might shut down then). So you would have to use a script with some safety logic built-in. Or use a scheduled task on the clients
    instead.

  • SCCM 2012: install applications to terminal server (2012)?

    Hi,
I'm trying to deploy a hotfix for App-v to a terminal server (Windows 2012). The install of the App-v 5.0 SP2 client worked fine but the install of the hotfix doesn't install silently to RDS-servers (the same install parameter works on a Windows 7 client
    = setup.exe /accepteula /qn).
Problem: installation starts but then the installation screen pops up.
Probably related to RDS (I should give some extra installation parameters? But why the App-v 5.0 SP2 client then installated without any issues)?
    Pls advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

How many servers? In cases like this it can be quicker to install it manually. After all, this is a one-time scenario.

  • SCCM 2012: install task sequence to VHD WITHOUT hyper-v being installed?

    Hi,
I'd like to install an OS to a VHD(X) without the need of installing hyper-v on the sccm-server, can that be done?
Not out of the box probably, but I could copy the current task sequence and give an option to choose the installation disk.
That way I could boot on a workstation into winpe, create a vhd, reboot to PXE, choose the specific tasksequence and choose the vhd to install to.
Can it be done and if so how (how to change the ts in order to be able to choose the vhd to install to?).
    Please advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

Great! Next thing would be to deploy to vhdx then deploy vhdx to pc via ts. The ts would then wipe the disk, make bootpartition and add vdisk via bcdboot. This would give a lot of flexibility in terms of deployment speed (only 1 file to deploy, not that
many reboots)backup (mount vhd to recover data),adding extra os, running clients vhd on hyperv host ... Only issue would be how to add machine specific drivers. Probably this topic has been discussed already. What s your point of view on this?
