New Search Bar

Hi People,
I'm sure most of you have noticed the new tab buttons on the top of the page. And chances are you've also seen the new search bar and how it works much like "Spotlight" does.
I'm trying to understand how it actually works but unfortunately the source code doesn't offer much in lessons.
If you know anything please post it so that all those interested could learn as well. And if you havn't checked it out yet, you'll find it's fantastic in operation. Although a few Win users have reported a site crash while using IE (must be a problem with the browsers code
Oh and if this is posted in the wrong place, I do apologize. I didn't know where to include it.

hi guys,
I'd still like some help on my topic if anyone is listening. Hope someone replies cause chances are I'll keep posting and bumping until I get something

  • New search bar at bottom of page

I have recently noticed a new search bar type thing at the bottom of the page when i use firefox. there is no name or brand to it, it doesnt show up in add on etc and i cant get rid of it! It has a X the Find: and a space to type in a search followed by next, previous...... you can close it using the X but comes back when changing the page. It is so annouying, everytime i go to fill in text box on a new page it automatically goes to there... grrr! Help, is this a firefox add on or someone elses?

In case that find bar setting is stuck on even though it's not checked in the dialog, try the double switch: check the box, OK that, then go back in and uncheck it and OK that.
Also, in case it's faster for you, if the find bar has the focus, pressing the Esc key will close it.
Occasionally Firefox will behave as though the Ctrl key is held down (for example, any link you click will open in a new tab). Tapping the key a few times might clear that, sometimes exiting and restarting Firefox will help, other times you have to restart Windows to resolve it.

  • Middle click new search bar's search for with should open in a new tab.

Is there a setting anywhere to enable middle clicking on alternative search engines in the new search bar to open in a new tab.

You can set this pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to open the results in a new tab.
    *<b>about:config</b> page: <b>browser.search.openintab</b> = true
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

  • When I click on the + a new tab comes up, but no google search bar. I was able to get a new search bar before an upgrade.

To get a new search bar to come up I have to go to File, open a new window. If I select open a new tab, only a tab comes up, no search bar. I tried downloading current Firefox then reverted back to old ones trying to fix my problem.

If you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some of your data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, form data) is automatically imported and your current profile will be moved to the desktop (Old Firefox Data).
You need to create a new profile if you really ant to get rid of all personal data and have a factory reset.

  • Can't get the new Search Bar while using Music Store

Just downloaded iTunes 5 last night for Windows XP and everything is OK except the ability to show the new search bar in the Music Store. I am able to use the new bar on all other apps of iTunes 5 (library, purchased music, etc.) except for the music store, and that's where for me it would be the most useful! Anyone else having this issue, or anyone know a fix?

Well OK, except if you watch the Apple Special Event where Steve Jobs unveils among other things the nano and the iTunes 5 enhancements, around 16:00 into it, he demos iTunes where he uses the new search bar in the Music Store. So what gives? More pixar special effects or what?

  • My tabs page shows nothing but the new search bar but that can't even be used either

So I use the newtabs page all the time, infact everytime I open firefox but I have opened newtabs page this morning and none of my pages are there at all and I haven't click "Hide new tabs page". All that is on the newtabs page is that new searchbar but thats not working for searches either.

Are there any errors in the Browser Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) that could be related to this?
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
*Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • How to remove the search bar from new tab page?

I've added extra pinned site rows and columns on the new tab page.
The new search bar is redundant and space hogging.
Please provide how to disable in step by step instructions :)
    Edit:
    Answer
    1. Go to Firefox Profile Folder (go to about:support in Firefox then click Open folder/Show in Finder to get there)
    2. Open or create the chrome folder in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    3. Create a blank text file, copy and paste this code into the text file.
    @-moz-document url(about:newtab)
    #newtab-search-container, #newtab-search-logo { display:none !important; }
    #newtab-margin-top, #newtab-search-container { display:none!important; }
    4. Save it as userContent.css (using ALL FILES under the drop down menu)
    5. Place the new css file into the chrome folder.

Fox_1923: You're not supposed to create a new chrome file but a <b>userContent.css</b> file in the <b>chrome</b> folder.
You can use mine and <b>cor-el's</b> code together in the userContent.css file to get rid of the large margin in the top along with the search box. I've used it just fine in the latest Nightly and so have others who dislike the search box.
One thing you could be doing wrong is not setting the file type to all Files and Notepad or whatever else you are using is adding an unneeded extension (for Windows, .txt = userContent.css.txt doesn't work!)

  • Middle click on search suggestions in Search Bar does not switch to new tab

I use profile option "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" = yes (check marked)
Middle clicking on a search suggestion in the Search Bar does open a new tab but Firefox does not switch to it.
This feature used to work for many years until very recently.
    Anybody have any ideas?

Did the problem start with the new search bar design in Firefox 34?
If you want to switch back to using the old bar, it's still hidden inside. Here's how you would do it:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste '''search''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' preference to switch it from true to false
This doesn't affect the current window, but each new window you open (Ctrl+n) will have the old Search bar.
I'm not sure when that will be phased out...

  • I recently downloaded a program and have now lost Firefox's "awesome bar" which has been replaced by the program's own search bar. How can I restore the "awesome bar" and get rid of the other search bar?

I recently downloaded Bearshare.com which then overrode my Firefox "awesome bar". Now when I enter a search item in the search box at the upper right of my screen, I'm automatically shunted to this new search bar where I have to re-enter my search item and click return before it will begin a search. Previously, the Firefox "awesome bar" opened automatically together with my home page and I had the choice of searching using it or the default search box at the upper right of my screen. I 'uninstalled' Bearshare but it now continues to come up when I search using the right hand top search box , forcing me to use it instead of the search box at the upper right of my screen. How do I get rid of it completely so that only the "awesome bar" appears as an extra tab when I open Firefox browser?

    First, some clarification:
    * The location bar (often called the "awesome bar") is the larger bar on the left that shows you the address of the page you are currently viewing. As you type in the location bar it searches your history and bookmarks for matches.
    * The search bar is the smaller one on the right. It typically displays an icon of whichever search engine is currently selected and may display search suggestions as you type in it.
It sounds like you are referring to the search bar rather than the location bar. You can change search engines for the search bar by clicking on the icon on the left edge of the search bar and choosing a different one. You can also choose "Manage Search Engines" to remove ones you aren't interested in using.
It also sounds like Bearshare might have changed your homepage in Firefox. To restore that you will need to open the preferences menu (click Tools > Preferences), go to the General tab (first on the top left), and click "Restore to Default".

  • My search bar is messed up after update. I want the old drop down menu back. I can't search for anything now. Firefox is absolutely useless to me now.

Firefox software update appeared. I allowed it to be installed. It screwed up the search bar/box. I use to be able to click on the magnifying glass icon and ALL the search engine options would appear and I could easily chose one. It was easy. Now nothing. I cannot search anything through Firefox. Firefox is useless to me now, which means I have no computer. Do I have to go out and spend another $1000 to get a new computer? This is not right. You should not do this to a person. Not everybody is technically advanced as some of you are. Now I have no means of searching for anything using Firefox. I really liked Firefox. Now your software update messed me all up. So what am I supposed to do???????????????? IE is worthless. Not safe, not secure, can't trust it. Never works right. Can't even print out correctly. Firefox update should not have messed up my computer. I need to make searches and now I can't. I mean it, it really is not right. So, just for you so called brilliant Stanford types, when I click on the magnifying glass icon or the little, inverted triangle, there is nothing. The search bar is blank. Blank, blank, blank. No longer the quick drop down window with all the available search engine selections. Got it? That's why I've repeated myself. Have a real nice day!

See this KB article to learn how the new Search Bar works - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-add-change-manage-search-engines-firefox
If you want the old Search Bar scheme back do this.
Open up '''about:config''' ''(typed in the Location Bar)'' and toggle this preference to '''''false'''''
    '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons'''
    Then restart Firefox.

  • Why are preivous searches showing in search bar?

    Running Firefox 34.0.5. Windows 7 64bit.
Somehow with these new changes to the search bar (which I hate) it now shows prior searches as I start typing in a new subject. Meaning I type "a" and then it shows me all my searches I made starting with the letter "A". I never had this show up before the latest update.
How do I turn this off or disable this feature? In my privacy section I have "never remember" selected. Is there something in "about:config" I need to do?
PS. The new search bar sucks. Before, I could click on the site icon and simply hit the enter key where it takes me to the site's home page (meaning I could just click the youtube icon and hit enter for a blank search where it takes me to the homepage). Now I have to do two steps to accomplish what I used to do. Just rambling

Hello bravacentauri83, you can have your "old" Search Bar again, go to
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config], copy the next bold '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' and paste it in the search field, now
double-click on it to make it '''false''', exit firefox and restart it.
For the searches see : [https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-use-popular-search-suggestions-in-search-bar#firefox:winxp:fx34 How to use popular search suggestions in the Search Bar]
    thank you

  • Multiple search bar - each tab has its own search bar

Firefox has global search bar - no matter how many tabs open all of them will have one search bar with the same search request.
What should one does to have a new and empty search bar for a new tab?
In other worlds I would like to open a new Tab with new search bar with empty field.
    Thanks in advance

1st screenshot = those are plugins, not extensions! I'm leaning towards an extension doing that, more so now after looking at your prefs settings.
2nd = looks like you turned off '''browser.search.suggest.enabled''' = you shouldn't be getting any suggestions at all
    and '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' isn't disabled
I have no experience with that pref not being disabled. I turned that pref off when I first saw it in Beta 34, because it totally screwed up the way I do searches with 35 search engines installed where as many as 5 use the same icon and there are 3 different groups of engines that have 2 or 3 of the same icon. Same domain but use different search parameters or terms.
One more thing - maybe the search engine you have selected is providing that "search" string. Google may do that if you don't have "suggestions" turned off in your Google+ prefs, iirc - especially if you are always logged into Google+.

  • Portal search bar design

I'm designing a new search bar in the partal and is there a way to use simply the search bar without any text or options surrounding it?

Fixed it. Make sure that you do not leave iTunes app while still on search page. Go to something else and then exit. When you reopen the app, the search bar will be back.

  • Upgrade to Firefox 34.0 (linux) has disabled search bar; how to fix without resetting everything?

After upgrading to Firefox 34.0 from Firefox 33.2.2(?) I noticed he search bar did not display my search engines. The search engines still exist on file but aren't visible. However, typing a word into the search bar will cause a section of my display to blink while hitting 'enter' will correctly search for the word on Wikipedia, my first search engine. Unfortunately for me, by the time I typed this out the search bar seems to be working correctly now. So, in addition to a late night, what the heck just happened, and will this bug creep back with every upgrade? Or is it a linux issue (ie. Puppy 5.3.3)?

Firefox 34 has an all new Search Bar and related Options tab.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-add-change-manage-search-engines-firefox
You can revert to the old Search Bar scheme with this.
Open up '''about:config''' ''(typed in the Location Bar)'' and toggle this preference to '''''false'''''
    '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons'''
    Then restart Firefox.
