New Server 2012 R2 Getting AD / SYSVOL Mismatch

I just loaded up a fresh copy of Server 2012 R2 in VMWare and made it a Domain Controller.  To get a feeling of it before I deploy it.
All the Windows updates have been done.
Ran the Group Policy Results Wizard and got these alerts.
Default Domain Controller Policy  Alert: AD / SYSVOL Version Mismatch
Default Domain Policy  Alert: AD / SYSVOL Version Mismatch
I found that there is a hot fix for this for Server 2012.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2866345
But when I run the hot fix it tells me that "The update is not applicable to your computer"
So how do i fix this issue? Dont want to deploy Server 2012 R2 to my live enviorment only to have issues.

  • New Server 2012 R2 server to take over for 2008 R2 - confused about alias necessity

    Hello,
Have Server 2008 R2 running in a small environment (35 users).  It was time to get new hardware and it has been setup with Server 2012 R2.  Already promoted to DC and running DNS.  Ready to transfer FSMO roles over to the 2012 R2 server.
    My concern/confusion comes here:
Users have network drives mapped to old server (i.e.
    \\dc1\share)
New servername is for instance "dc2"
Do I demote dc1, remove it from the environment and create an alias named dc1 pointing to dc2, thus, networked drives and network printer shares continue to work, or is there a better way to do this?
    thanks

imho just update mapped drives using gpo and that's all
if you have just one server for all stuff, don't demote old one , keep 2 servers alive (if you can, I don't know, maybe you need give old one away) and you will have redundancy. Then if you got 2 servers do DFS shares (shares will have names not bind
to servers name so you can add, replace server's with no problems and have redundancy of shared folders too)

  • New server 2012 - some NT4 /98/W2K clients

    Hi,
Have a bit of a challenge here.... I have a scenario were we are running a full 2003 AD with 2003R2 DC and a couple of virtual servers...
Time has come to move forward and upgrade to 2012 seems like the only option using Hyper-V. The particular scenario has a big challenge: more than 50 machines with legacy machines running from NT4, Windows 98, Windows 2000 pro...
Getting rid of these machines is just not an option. They will have to dump data to shared folders with lots of security permissions configured.
Will NT4 be able to authenticate to 2012 DC (I would be very surprised)? If not,
Should I create  a new domain and leave the machines authenticating on the old domain.
    Would a trust work 2003 <--> 2012?
If a trust works, What would be the minimum AD level on the 2012 server?
The challenge is really to have a modern infrastructure running Hyper-V for the more modern clients, but, at the same time, to keep those really old machines running...
Thanks for sharing your ideas on this!

    Hi
This is tricky, for sure you will not have definite answer, and for sure you will encounter some problems, i know this from same case but with server 2008 dc, i recommend that you set up lab and test it thoroughly.
Getting rid of these machines is just not an option?
Why, maybe this is the easiest and best way to go. Probably someone should have done it long ago
Yes you can create  a new domain and leave the machines authenticating on the old domain, but that i think will just prolong inevitable, saying bye to the old os's.
Yes you can create trust between server 2003 domain and server 2012 domain

Windows Server 2012 requires a Windows Server 2003 forest functional level
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771294.aspx
And at last you can't have modern infrastructure and at the same time have those really old machines running... :)

  • New Server 2012 install - Active Directory not working properly

We recently converted from 2003 to 2012. Our 2012 R2 server seems to be running fine. We did a DCPROMO on the OLD 2003 DC just fine but now there are all sorts of odd errors (Sharepoint can't authenticate users, Can't run Exchange 2013 on another 2012 server
because it can't find AD, etc.)
on the DC we have a Group Policy error 1096. "Group Policy Object LDAP://CN=User,cn={2B476B3E-2749-4B1B-8EC1-F5672A66F94F},cn=policies,cn=system,DC=mydom,DC=local\\mydom.local\SysVol\mydom.local\Policies\{2B476B3E-2749-4B1B-8EC1-F5672A66F94F}\User\registry.pol"
So far I haven't found anything on how to fix this (and the AD itself.) There are some errors in the DCDIAG log, too:
          Starting test: NetLogons
Unable to connect to the NETLOGON share! (\\ISD-DC1\netlogon)
[ISD-DC1] An net use or LsaPolicy operation failed with error 67,
The network name cannot be found..
    Starting test: FrsEvent
There are warning or error events within the last 24 hours after the
SYSVOL has been shared.  Failing SYSVOL replication problems may cause
             Group Policy problems.
Any suggestions how we can fix these errors are greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
Did you migrate the Active Directory from Windows server 2003 to Windows server 2012?

SQL Server 2012 Management Studio attempting to log into a SQL Server 2012 instance on a remote server using SQL Authenticated login.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Nick,
Have you seen any additionally information from Windows Event Viewer?
Based on my research, exception code e0434352  is the exception code used internally by the CLR to represent most exceptions(*), it could mean anything. If you want to find out exactly what the real error is, please review this
    blog.
In addition, in such case, Microsoft .Net Framework may need to be updated or repaired on your computer. For more details, you can refer to the following similar thread.

  • New Server 2012 -- Network Location Awareness & Power Failure

Could you try setting up a dependency or delay on the boot? This would be more of a temporary solution, but should help you confirm that the only issue was with communication with the DC.

Hello everyone,This is kind of a mixed question of AD/Domain/GPO, Server 2012 R2 Standard, Windows 7 clients, and File Sharing.. please bare with me.We had an interesting event this morning..We have a 2012 R2 STD member file server on the domain. We had a total power failure, and I believe the file server came up faster than any domain controller. Anyhow, we couldn't access the shares on the server. Upon further investigation, I saw that the network location on the file server was 'unknown' and decided to restart the server. After that, it went back to its domain profile. Are there any known solutions to this scenario? Can I force the server to use the domain profile at all times? I've briefly read about the local GP edit trick, but haven't tried it out yet. Apparently, you can allow changes to adapter profiles, and then manually set...

how do i fix this so it will work??
the other two domain controllers are running windows server 2003 32-bit operating systems.
could the cause of this problem be that the server 2012 is 64-bit and the server 2003 machines are 32-bit???

  • New Server 2012 R2 virtual servers seem slow, how to tell if it's Windows or underlying VM host?

We recently created two virtual Server 2012 R2 boxes, but the server seems rather pokey on a Remote Desktop session to it.  Task Manager doesn't show high processor usage (it reports 2.26GHz, 2 sockets, 4 virtual processors, virtual machine yes, L1
cache N/A", memory is usually around 11%, and not a concerning amount of network traffic.
Since both servers are pokey, I'm thinking that the issue may be in the VMware side, or the hard drives this is running off of are slow, or something not at the OS level.  But how can I confirm that, or at least say that without a doubt it has nothing
    to do with Windows?

    Hi RJO22,
    >>Task Manager doesn't show high processor usage (it reports 2.26GHz,
    2 sockets, 4 virtual processors,
It seems that the VM spanned two NUMA nodes .
Is there any other VM show the processor usage ( 1 socket ) ?

Thanks for helping make community forums a great place.
I looked at another virtual server we have, and it shows 2.226/2/4 just like that one.  Is that bad or does that cause performance issues with how mine say 2?

  • New WSUS on Server 2012 - problem with win8 clients

    Hi,
Two weeks ago we created a new Server 2012 and installed the WSUS role from scratch on it.  Its version number is:  6.2.9200.16384.  It replaced a Server 2008 WSUS server.  After some time all the win7 clients updated and reported as
they did on the old and replaced server.
However all our win8 clients refuse to update against this server.  They show correctly up in WSUS server console each with 107 needed updates day after day.  We have rebooted them and done numerous wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow and wuauclt
/detectnow /reportnow, but to no avail.
I paste in some lines from a win8 client winupdate log at the end of this message if someone can figure out what I have to do to get these clients update as they did against the old wsus server.  Thanks for help on this issue.
    regards Tor

Today I opened Control Panel / Windows Updates and first did a check for new updates (from the WSUS server).  Nothing was found and it reported Windows is Updated.   Then I clicked the link Check for updates from Microsoft via internet, and
    it found around 24 updates.
This is confirmation of the point that I made in the previous post. The updates are *NEEDED* by this system, but the updates were not *AVAILABLE* from the assigned WSUS Server. You were able to get them from Windows Update, but that does not fix your continuing
    issue with the WSUS Server.
but it still reported the original 108 Needed updates.
Exactly. As previously noted, the client is functioning perfectly. The problem is NOT with the client; the problem is with the WSUS Server. The updates that this client needed were not AVAILABLE to be downloaded from the WSUS server.
Why this is the case requires further investigation on your part, but is either because the updates are not properly approved, or the update FILES are not yet downloaded from Microsoft to the WSUS server.
It appears that the wsus server doesn't get any information back from the client despite that it displays new Last contact and Last Status report timestamps.
This conclusion is incorrect. The WSUS Server got every bit of information available from the client -- you've confirmed this by the number of updates reported as "Needed" by the Windows Update Agent to the WSUS Server.
I assumed that the log would display if the updates were downloaded or not.
It will log when the updates are actually downloaded. If there's no log entries for updates being downloaded, then they're not being downloaded. If the logfile says "Found 0 updates", then that means exactly what it says: It couldn't find any approved/available
    updates to download.
In your case it "Found 11 updates", but now it will be impossible to diagnose that fault, because you went and got them from Windows Update.
All Win8 versions are checked in the WSUS server's Product list so the updates should at least have been downloaded to the server.
This is why understanding the infrastructure is so critical. Your conclusion is invalid based on the premise given, and you may be using improper terminology which only confuses the rest of us as well.
First, selecting updates for synchronization only gets the update metadata (i.e. the detection logic) downloaded to the WSUS database.
The Second Step in this process is to Approve those updates for one or more WSUS Target Groups that contain the appropriate client systems. Following the approval of an update, the WSUS Server downloads the INSTALLATION FILE for that update.
Once the WUAgent sees an approved update and the installation file is available, then the WUAgent will download the file and schedule the update for installation.
Most of the post I read about my problem is about upgrading a 2008 WSUS server to support Win8 / Server 12 clients.  When I try to run this update on my Server 12 WSUS it refuses to run (probably because it is for Server 2008).
Yeah.. totally different issue in those posts than what you're describing here.
What should I do to try to track down the problem?
Well.... now that it's 11 days since the logfile was posted, and you've already updated that system, we'll first need to find another system exhibiting the same issue.
Then I'll need to ask a number of questions to properly understand the environment, as well as what you have or have not done.
Then, from there, we can attempt to figure out why your Windows 8 client apparently sees some updates as approved/available but is still not downloading them. We do not yet have sufficient information to even speculate on a possible cause -- there are several.

  • Msg 8631 Internal error: Server stack limit has been reached on SQL Server 2012 from T-SQL script that runs on SQL Server 2008 R2

I have an Script mostly that is generated by SSMS which works with-out issue on SQL Server 2008, but when I attempt to run it on a new fresh install of SQL Server 2012 I get an Msg 8631. Internal error: Server stack limit has been reached. Please look for
potentially deep nesting in your query, and try to simplify it.
The script itself doesn't seem to be all that deep or nested.  The script is large 2600 lines and when I remove the bulk of the 2600 lines, it does run on SQL Server 2012.  I'm just really baffled why something that SQL Server generated with very
few additions/changes AND that WORKS without issue in SQL Server 2008 R2 would suddenly be invalid in SQL Server 2012
I need to know why my script which is working great on our current SQL Server 2008 R2 servers suddenly fails and won't run on an new SQL Server 2012 server.  This script is used to create 'bulk' Replications on a large number of DBs saving a tremendous
amount of our time doing it the manual way.
Below is an 'condensed' version of the script which fails.  I have removed around 2550 lines of specific sp_addarticle statements which are mostly just copy and pasted from what SQL Management Studio 'scripted' for me went I when through the Replication
Wizard and told it to save to script.

  • Alternatives to PowerShell automation of Excel (Scheduled Task) in a Windows Server 2012 R2 world

I have a handful of PowerShell scripts that ran as Scheduled Tasks on an old Windows 2008 SP2 server, which output reports as Excel workbooks with multiple worksheets, via a COM object. After migrating these scripts to a new Windows 2012 R2 server,
these scripts no longer function. The Server 2008 system was running Office 2007, and the new Server 2012 R2 server has Office 2013 installed.
What is everyone using on their Server 2012 R2 systems to automate generation of multi-sheet reports in Excel via PowerShell and Scheduled Tasks?
I know that Microsoft has said that automating Office applications server-side in non-interactive mode, but it has worked in the past, until now. (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/257757)
I've tried the OpenXML PowerTools for PowerShell (https://powertools.codeplex.com/), but Export-OpenXMLSpreadsheet will only export a single worksheet, and they don't support adding worksheets to existing files
(am I missing something?). I understand the OpenXML PowerTools can be extended in C#, but I don't C#. The PowerShell cmdlets were released in Jan 2012, but don't look to have been updated since then (updates have been the core C# code).
I've seen recommendations to add C:\Windows\(System32 or SysWOW64)\config\systemprofile\Desktop, but this hasn't worked on Server 2012.
Has anyone been able to get Excel 2013 to cooperate on Server 2012 R2, or come up with a suitable alternative? I'd rather not start running these scripts from my workstation.
    EDIT:
I'm not necessarily looking for an Excel answer, since there are OpenXML ways of doing things now without the Excel application.
Here are some of the errors I'm getting when approaching this from different directions. When I use:
    $excel = New-Object -comobject Excel.Application$workbook = $excel.Workbooks.Add()
    Results in error:
Exception calling "Add" with "0" argument(s): "Microsoft Excel cannot open or
save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk
    space.
    • To make more memory available, close workbooks or programs you no longer
    need.
    • To free disk space, delete files you no longer need from the disk you are
    saving to."

    + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ComMethodTargetInvocation
The server is definitely not lacking for resources.
I can copy a blank XLSX file and use .Open($xlFile) instead of .Add(), but then when I go to open a CSV file to copy/paste the content to a worksheet, I get this one:
Exception calling "Open" with "1" argument(s): "The server threw an exception.
    (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT))"

Things that I've tried so far, with no success:
I created C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop as suggested here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/0751119d-84d5-4a77-8240-1c4802f97375/powershell-scheduled-tasks-wont-start-excel?forum=winserverpowershell
Add Local Launch and Local Activation permissions to the Microsoft Excel Application DCOM Config, Grant "Read & Execute, List folder contents, Read" permissions on the \config\systemprofile\Desktop folder. Grant "Modify, Read & Execute,
List Folder Content, Read, Write" permissions for the account on the following folders:
    \config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft
    \config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft
    as suggested here:

@ jrv - I will try posting a similar question in the Excel 2013 forum, but since I'm looking for a scripting solution to produce an OpenXML spreadsheet, and not something that necessarily uses the Excel application (though such a solution would not be turned
away), I thought this the more appropriate venue.
(to reiterate from OP) I have seen and acknowledge Microsoft's statements regarding the unsupported nature of automating Office applications in non-interactive environments, but the truth of the matter is, supported or not, it worked in the past (Server
2008), it's what I inherited from my predecessor, and I know I'm not the only one who has been using Excel in this way. I'm only asking fellow scripters, some of whom must also be using Excel in this "unsupported" fashion, how they are automating
creation of their spreadsheet reports after moving to Server 2012. A different system modification to make the Excel comObject continue working as before? Direct manipulation of the OpenXML document? Other solutions that may or may not require launching the
    Excel application?

    #1 - Ask in Excel 2013 forum.
#2 - Microsoft has repeatedlynoted that this is NOT a supported configuration for Office products.
#3 - What errors are you getting?
#4 - What have you done to debug this:
#5 - No one can be of much help unless you post a very simple example of how this fails.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Can't Install Desktop Experience on Server 2012 - Sources problem

    Hi Guys,
I have been struggling to install the Desktop Experience (Which includes Ink and Handwriting Services) feature on a new Server 2012 VM, and I haven't been able to.  It always says it can't find the sources ("Do you need to specify an alternate source
path?"), even though the DVD image is readily accessible to the server I try yo deploy this to (the same server where I tried to add the feature from).
I think I have tried pretty much everything (From UI through Server Manager, to PowerShell and DISM), and I get "The source files could not be found".
My preferred method would be the UI one, but I still can't figure out what I am missing.  The Server 2012 image is available on the server directly (through Hyper-V CD mount).
I know that by default, Windows will try to use Windows Update to get the feature files from (if no offline location is specified), but for some reason that one fails too.
I tried using as a source location (My understanding is that the files are inside the WIM):
    -    WIM:E:\Sources\Install.wim:2
    -    E:\Sources\SxS\
    -  Mounting the WIM in a folder on the C drive through DISM, and reference that path in the "Add Roles and Features screen"
And of the countless times I've tried, I always get "The source files could not be found. Try installing roles, role services, or features again in a New Add Roles and Features Wizard session, and on the confirmation page of the wizard, click "Specify an
alternate source path" to specify a valid location of the source files that are required for the installation. The location must be accessible by the computer account of the destination server."
I have rebooted the server, and I have made sure the DVD image is available (by opening the E drive on windows explorer and browsing through the installer folders.
As a side note, on this server I also installed .NET 3.5 from this same offline source, by referencing "E:\Sources\SxS\" as the install source, and everything went just fine.  Still not sure what I am missing.
    Thoughts?

    Thansk Yan!
That clarifies why try to install it was failing.  However, I have some other questions:
     - How did this happen (This OS was installed from the regular Server 2012 Standard - Not Server Core that was converted to the GUI version)?.
     - How can I fix it (Make Desktop Experience be listed as "Available") ?
    UPDATE:
I tried installing the Desktop-Experience feature through PowerShell but this is what I got:

  • Network Location not showing domain name in Server 2012 R2 after demoting 2003 PDC

The single active NIC in my new Server 2012 R2 no longer shows the Network Location of "DOMAIN.LOCAL" like it did before I demoted the only Server 2003 domain controller. The NIC now shows "NETWORK" as the Network Location.
The registry still shows a Profile with the correct PROFILENAME in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
but that name does not show up in the Network List Manager Policies inside Local Security Policy.
The 2012 R2 Srv has all of the FSMO roles, Client PC's can connect to the domain but will not get new map drives from a script, they must be created manually. My Quickbooks Enterprise clients cannot see the QB Server Manager on this server and I think it
is related to this issue because of firewall restrictions.
The Windows Firewall pointed me in this direction because the "Private Networks" is connected to my NIC named "Network" but the Firewall "Domain Networks" is reported as "Not connected."
    Any Help is appreciated,

    Hi,
    Based on my research,
Network Location Awareness (NLA) service expects to be able to enumerate the
domain’s forest name to choose the right network profile for the connection. The service does this by calling
DsGetDcName on the forest root name and issuing an LDAP query on UDP port 389 to a root Domain Controller.
If something hinders the DNS name resolution or the connection attempt to the DC, NLA is not able to set the appropriate network profile on the connection.
Therefore, I suggest you check the DNS settings on DCs and other domain-joined machines, which should point to the existing DC as preferred DNS server, and secondary DC as alternate DNS server, IP address of demoted DC should be
removed. In addition, please do not use loopback IP address.
Here are some articles below I suggest you refer to:

  • Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain.  The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.

This is blocking further work.  Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time.  Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message.  I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up.  No joy as well.  This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1.  Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue.  Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue.  Only this new Server 2012 R2 server.  My logs are below:

  • Server 2012 RS Standard Planning

It's been a while since I've planned a new server strategy.  There are so many options and looking for some guidance on best practices.  (no Laughing please) Currently we have 1win2000 Global catalog, active directory server, 1 Server 2003
file/ accounting host server and 1 server 2008 r2 hyper-v enabled running 2 vms for remote offsite users.  We have about 34 users over 30 client desktops (win7-win8)  All server systems are running solid, but would like to
    start consolidating.
Moving forward, I'm not interested in trying to figure out how to get active directory from my win200 server, over to a new server 2012.  I'm ok with starting from scratch.
    Required Roles:
    File server
SQL Server for SAGE Accpac database (about 20gb accounting databse)
3-6 Remote offsite users (RDS? or Hyper-v?)
What I'd like to buy is 1 physical Lenovo server with 2 Xeon 6core CPU's, 24gb ram, 2tb storage.
Is it wrong for me to want the above mentioned roles to run on 1 server?
Should I do it on 1 server with server vms in hyper v?
If I could, I'd install server 2012R2 Standard as a New Domain global cat/active directory server.
I'd then install file server role and SQL server for the accounting DBs.  My thoughts for the 3-6  offsite remote users would be to run virtualized win7 machines.  Does this setup sound feasible in the way I've outlined it?  I usually
read people objecting to having all these roles on 1 server instance, but we are pretty small (less than 40 users) and feel 1 server could easily handle this load.

    Hi
     Further clarify:-)
    If you plan to buy 1 physcial server you can create this topology;
    - Install Server 2012 r2 Standard on your physcial envorenment
    - Also install hyper-v role (Windows Server 2012 r2 standard Support vm with licenced)
    - Install first vm and configure as an DC.
    - Install second Vm and install SQL server on this.
As you say you have 3 Physcial server thats great...
    - Install Windows Server 2012 r2 on each 3 physcial server
    - Also install Hyper-v role on this 3 server 2012 r2 standard (also you can create totally 6 Vm wth licence on server 2012 standard with hyper-v)
    - Install PDC on a vm,then install another vm and add as an Additional DOmain Controller (for Redundacy AD DS,DNS)
    - Install 2 vm server and configure a SQL cluster
    - install file server another vm
    - install RDS server on another vm
    Is this appropriate?
