New shuffle not recognized by windows/iTunes

my boyfriend got me a shuffle but it isn't working with my computer or laptop. i know there's nothing wrong with the shuffle because he added songs before he gave it to me. i tried all of the "solutions" given by Apple's support except restoring. this is most likely a problem with my usb drives, i tried to update and reinstall as suggested in support but alas...
i'm extremely frustrated, help would be appreciated.

Is it a REAR port on your computer? You don't have a printer connected to this computer?
Have you tried running the Reset Utility on it?

  • Brand new Shuffle - not recognized in Windows or iTunes

I just got an iPod Shuffle 1Gb for Christmas (today). Followed all the instructions installing software, etc. Plug in the iPod - the light on the front flashes orange. Does not show up in My Computer, Device Manager or iTunes.
Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software, rebooted, installed latest iPod and iTunes software downloaded from website. iPod still not recognized and still flashes orange when plugged in to a USB port. Tried several different USB ports - no change.
    Rebooted again (more than once).
    iPod is fully charged.
    iPod has been reset.
I can't restore it, because even the iPod software doesn't recognize it.
My USB ports are fine - digital camera and external USB hard drive still work when plugged in to the various ports. Unplugged all other USB devices and iPod still wasn't recognized.
All my friends love their iPods. This is my first one. I have to say... I'm not impressed.
As I said, this was a gift, so I don't have a receipt for it, and there isn't an Apple store near me. And I think having to pay $30 to send it back to Apple so they'll replace it with a "new, used or refurbished" iPod is bullsh*t.

I had the same problem today.
What I found is that during the install routine, the Shuffle was not formatted. I went through Windows Explorer (right click on "Start" and choose "explore"). My computer found the shuffle as a removable media, but when I tried accessing it (clicking on the drive while in explorer), I got a message saying that it wasn't formatted. So, I said yes to the prompt to format it and as soon as it did, iTunes saw it and started the rest of the install routine. I had to restart and replug in the device, and it seems to be working great.
I don't know if this will help you out, but it is worth a try.
    Merry Christmas

  • IPOD shuffle not recognized by Windows/Itunes - download installation SW

I have used a 2G Ipod shuffle successfully on one Dell Windows XP PC for over one year. Have Itunes 7.02 on an identical Dell PC. Plugged shuffle into usb port(s)on second PC - shuffle light turns green momentarily and then off. Shuffle recognized by neither Windows nor Itunes. Went thru the various fixes in apple ipod support to no avail. One suggested fix was to reinstall the IPOD software from the CD that came with the shuffle. Unfortunately, I cannot find the CD and find a link on the apple website to download the corresponding software.
    Suggestions?

I have a solution, derived after some 16 hours of
messing about with the shuffle, reading and
re-reading the forum posts, trying to get my PC to
recognize it, and hold the USB connection without the
old Malfunction bubble ... my advice is free ... take
the shuffle back! I swapped for a 2G Nano, and
within 5 minutes I was off and away! Go Apple GO!
The highly experienced sounding tech at the store
    was also at a loss.
If you read the OP's plaint carefully you'd have noticed what's being talked about is a Shuffle that's over a year old... Thus, unless OP has AppleCare, taking it back is not an option.

  • 1st gen shuffle not recognized by windows, itunes, or reset utility

Have had shuffle for just over a year (figures). Ran out of charge, tried to charge it, but computer didn't recognize. Have tried to reset and recharge. No lights come on when attached to computer. When I try to play it, green light comes on momentarily and I can hear music, but then it dies in about a minute. Can't restore because itunes won't recognize it. Finally downloaded shuffle reset utility, but that doesn't recognize it either. Is it dead? Should I toss it? I'm almost more ****** that I've spent a lot of time trying to diagnose it than I am that it stopped working. See lots of references to this topic, but can't get a definitive answer.

  • Ipod not recognized by windows, itunes, and will not charge with pc.

yesterday, when i went to sync some new music onto my 1gen nano, it did not work (duh). i plugged it in 3 times:
-1st, it displayed the "do not connect screen" for one second, and itunes flashed the screen it shows when your ipod is connected, but then the ipod disconnected itself after that one second.
-2nd, windows gave me a message saying the hardware could not be recognized.
-3rd, nothing at all happened, as has been happening each time i try to plug it in since then.
i've done the 5 R's .. and i've tried all the suggestions shown on posts that sound like mine, including these: Windows XP cannot detect an iPod.
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
my ipod will charge when plugged into a wall charger, and it plays normally. also, my brother's ipod (2nd gen nano) is recognized by windows/itunes.

    Hello
I have been having nearly the same problem as Crashcup for the past month. Differences being I am operating with Windows Vista and my iPod is a 160GB Classic. I have gone through all the steps in the troubleshooting documents to no result. I attach my iPod and it is not recognized by Windows, iTunes or even in Device Manager. Not even as an "Unknown Device".
I know there is nothing wrong with the USB ports as two different external hard drives and a video game controller work perfectly fine through them. Same goes with the iPod itself; it continues to play and function normally, and is recognized by a charging device completely separate from my laptop. Just when attached to the computer there is no sign of it.
I am very frustrated that there is no further instruction with regard to what to do with an iPod Classic (as referred to by Crashcup: "...it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC????)
Any help would be much appreciated.l=

  • IPod not recognized by Windows / iTunes

    Hello,
I hope someone here can help. So far my first experience with Apple support has NOT been a positive impression.
I searched for info on this problem, but the other ones I see all seem to be related to freezing or battery issues.
iPod Classic 120GB, I don't sync very often, and just finished doing a bunch of cleanup in iTunes (album artwork, song info, etc.) and want to re-sync the pod.
When I connect to the PC with the USB cable, Windows doesn't seem to recognize the device, and it doesn't show up in iTunes.
It is charging through USB, however. The battery is fully charged.
I tried 3 different USB ports on the PC.
    Tried restarting iTunes.
    Tried restarting the computer.
Went to Apple support website, tried the troubleshooting assistant:
    Reset the pod.
*Had already tried different USB ports.
*Had already trired restarting the PC (Although it mentions checking for the latest software updates - I didn't do this. WHAT software updates should I look for? Device drivers? OS updates? WHAT???)
    Re-installed iTunes. (Was already at v 9.2.1.4)
*Did not try the restore. Reading the instructions, it appears that the iPod has to be connected to do this, and that's the problem -won't connect!
Also read something about disk mode. I set the iPod to disk mode, but it's not recognized that way, either. When connected by USB in this mode, the iPod screen still says "OK to disconnect".
I tried the link "iPhone, iPad, or iPod is not recognized by Windows".
I do not see the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" anywhere in Device Manager. I suppose this is the problem.
However, continuing with the instructions, it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC?????
(These instructions also say to disconnect the device, but nowhere says when to connect it. Why do they put half-baked troubleshooting instructions on their web site???)
Is there anyone from Apple support on this list who can help? I believe the driver needs to be reinstalled somehow, but it didn'thappen when i re-installed iTunes, so how do I do this?
    Thanks
    Keith

  • Plays & lights work but NOT recognized by Windows/iTunes & won't charge

It's a shuffle 512mb from a few months back and worked perfectly until last week. It continued to play as usual, but is no longer recognized when i plug it into ANY computer (i've tried about a half dozen)! I've followed every suggestion and recommendation from both the Apple Support and the discussion groups relating to my problem though it seems no one has experienced my specific ordeal. I am quite limited as it is not recognized by Windows. I tried searching for it as a "media device" but nothing. All the fucntions and lights work while playing, but there is absolutely no response when connected to a PC. When this charge goes, i'll be without my tunes!
    Any help...

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes v7.0 - What Now?

    Hello everyone,
I am having the same problem as many who have posted here. I have upgraded my software to iTunes v7.0.1.8. I also accepted the auto update for my iPod Shuffle - 512GB 1st Gen to v 1.44 (I believe). Of course, now my Shuffle is not recognized in iTunes and is only recognized in Windows for less than 5 seconds (as I have monitored it). I am listing below all of the actions I have taken today.
As none of these have worked, my question is now what? Does anyone have any other suggestions before I take the dreaded step of calling support? Any help is appreciated.
I am not happy with this upgrade issue at all. I expect much better from Apple.
    Steps Already Taken:
    1. Reset iPod.
    2. Set Terminal Services to "Manual" and restarted my laptop PC.
    3. Changed all USB Root Hub entries power management options to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option" and rebooted.
    4. Assigned my external hard drive a different letter as it was assigned to "E" and tech support documentation suggested I changed it - I changed it to "M".
    5. I stopped the iPod Service via the Services and Application interface from My Computer/Manage, reattached the Shuffle, and started the iPod Service. The Shuffle was still not recognized.
    6. I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1.8, the Apple Software update and QuickTime. I deleted all temp directories; program files folders and all possible traces of all three pieces of this software. I also deleted my iTunes library. I reinstalled all of this software and re-built my Library. NONE OF THIS WORKED!
My 30GB Video iPod works fine and always has - it is only the shuffle for which I have this issue any only since the upgrade.
What do I do now? If no one has another fix, I will be forced to call Tech Support after an experience with them over a year ago I would almost rather throw this thing away!

qswh - I too cannot play the songs that are loaded on the shuffle. Additionally, I get a green & orange light when I plug it into a USB port and then I either get a blinking orange light or a solid orange light from there after.

  • Ipod shuffle not recognized in windows 7

I bought a new 2gb ipod shuffle 4th gen on friday, as my 120gb classic was stolen, and i have been having massive problems with it. Whenever I attach it to the USB port (tried in all 4) it only comes up with a box in the bottom right of windows saying "USB Device Not Recognized", and then nothing at all happens in itunes (which is up to date). To say I have taken it out of the USB port and put it back in 200 times would not be an exaggeration. After about 10 minutes, it was suddenly recognized and I managed to put a few songs from my itunes onto it, but then it got disconnected, and it was never recognized by the computer again. As I only managed to put a fraction of the songs I want on it, it is annoying that it won't work.
The ipod shuffle plays completely fine, I can listen to the songs I DID manage to put on it. I have also tried everything on another computer with itunes and the same thing happened. Every other USB device I own has worked on it, and I have unplugged everything to see if or not it conflicts, and it makes no difference with the shuffle. As the shuffle plays fine, I can only imagine it being a problem with the cable, but for a brief time it worked in itunes perfectly, so I am unsure.
Any help would be massively appreciated. but at this rate I will be taking it back to argos.
I have tried practically everything in all the support and troubleshooting guides, tried using the shuffle in 2 seperate computers, and the shuffle is most definitely plugged in all the way!

When disconnect, iPod will sync. However, iTunes is on external drive; therefore musc is not syncing onto iPod. I've attempted the 5 R's as well as searching for iPod in Device Mananger. When iPod is conncected, it is listed in Devce Manage as "Unknown Device." Articles to solve recommend relettering device, bu how do I get it to be recognized by Device Manager?

I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THAT I JUST BOUGHT MY 30GB IPOD VIDEO ABOUT 4 HOURS AGO, SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN REALLY STRUGGLING TO INSTALL IT. A SOON AS I GOT IT, I DID EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID, I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM/IPOD/START AND DOWNLOADED THE NEWEST ITUNES VERSION. THEN I PLUGGED IN MY IPOD TO MY COMPUTER, AND ALL THAT HAPPENS IS A LITTLE BUBBLE OPENS UP AND SAYS "FOUND NEW HARDWARE" WHEN I CLICK THAT, IT OPENS UP, AND I CLICK "INSTALL THE SOFTWARE AUTOMATICALLY" WHERE IT SAYS IT, THEN I CLICK NEXT AND WAIT. AFTER, IT SAYS "THE HARDWARE WAS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE THE WIZARD CANNOT FIND THE NECESARRY SOFTWARE".AFTER I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, I'VE LOOKED THROUGH AND READ EVERY ARTICLE THAT CAN PERTAIN TO MY SITUTAION, BUT NONE HAVE HELPED ME I AM DISPLEASED TO SAY, THE LAST ARTICLE I READ WAS THIS ONE:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
BUT EVEN THAT DOES NOT HELP ME BECAUSE WHEN I GET TO STEP 8 WHICH SAYS "Locate the iPod in this list. In some cases one of the entries will have "iPod" in its name. If no such entries are present, the iPod is most likely represented by "USB Mass Storage Device." I LOOK FOR WHERE IT SAYS "IPOD" OR "USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE" UNDER "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS, AND CANNOT FIND EITHER THING..I HAVE RESTARTED MY COMPUTER A NUMBER OF TIMES, I HAVE EVEN UNISTALLED ITUNES THEN REINSTALLED IT I HAVE STRETCHED EVERY OPTION AND NOTHING HAS WORKED..CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME??..I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR 4 HOURS STRAIGHT STOPPING ONLY TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AND GRAB A BITE TO EAT..

  • New shuffle not detected by Windows

Familiar story: I bought a new shuffle, which arrived today, and Windows doesn't detect it at all. I followed the installation procedure by the book, but no luck. I went through every step in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711 including the 5 R's (more than once), but nothing works. I've uninstalled both iTunes and the iPod software, restarted my computer, reinstalled the latest versions of iTunes and the iPod software, and restarted again. No luck. I've tried every USB port on my computer. (I have one built-in USB 1.1 port and a PCMCIA card with four USB 2.0 ports.) The iPod itself claims to be charged when I press the battery button. (They must ship these models with a full charge, I guess.) It just isn't detected by Windows at all. It doesn't show up in device manager or Explorer or the iPod Updater or anywhere else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Dell C600 Latitude   Windows 2000

I've already tried every USB port on my computer. (I have a single USB 1.1 port built in to the computer, and a PC card that provides four USB 2.0 ports. None of them work. All five show up as having 500 mA available to them, which I think counts as "high-powered," right?)
What do you mean when you say that I can't send it back? The return policy on the invoice says: "If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a pre-built product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product.…A 10% open box fee will be assessed on any opened hardware or accessory." So I thought I could return it provided that I am willing to get hit with a rather lame 10% restocking fee (which should come to about ten bucks on a shuffle purchase). Am I misunderstanding?

  • 2ndd gen Shuffle not recognized in OSX/iTunes after OSX/Itunes update

After updating two iMacs to 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 my 2nd gen Shuffle isn't recognized on either.
    1. It still plays music so I know it's not dead
    2. It stopped syncing after updating but not sure which update could be the cause.
    3. I've tried rebooting the computer(s)
    4. I've tried the iPod restore utility and it doesn't recognize the iPod at all.
Is there anything else I've missed?

I've had this exact issue for a couple of weeks. I finally managed to drive the hour+ to our nearest Apple store. To my great frustration they were able to have my Shuffle connect perfectly to their machine, yet it still is not recognized by my Intel Mini or my hubby's PC. It sits in the cradle and flashes yellow like it's charging, but is otherwise unrecognized by my computer. When I try the reset utility it is "aware" that my Shuffle is there, but cannot retrieve serial # data or disk spaced used...the iPod is never ready for reset.
At this point I don't know what to do...buy a new 4th gen. Shuffle in the hopes that it works? I'm not sure if the issue is with my iPod or my computer or iTunes.... I'm contemplating switching to another player entirely, even if it means having to burn all my music to CDs and reimport as Mp3s.
Adding to my frustration, I purchased my Shuffle only in April from SmallDog.com. I purchased what was SUPPOSED to be a brand new, with full warranty Shuffle. I found out today that the iPod was registered almost 2 years ago when Small Dog received it and stocked it in their warehouse, so I essentially paid full price for a shuffle sans warranty. Apparently Small Dog is not the only company that pulls this BS. A purchase may not be warrantied for a full year (or for any time) from anyone other than Apple.

  • Re: iPod not recognized by Windows / iTunes

My 80gb iPod classic is recognized by my PC (Windows XP) but not in iTunes. I have gotten iTunes to give me a prompt to restore the iPod, but after that when iTunes says that the iPod will restart and will appear in the left-hand pane, it never does, and I get an iTunes message that there is an improperly connected iPod detected.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (I also have an iPhone, so I can't downgrade to an old version of iTunes), restarted my computer, tried connecting the iPod in disk mode, etc. I ran CopyTransDoctor and got a message that the iPod is corrupted. Same with trying to defragment the hard drive in the iPod using the Windows utility. Once that has happened, is there any way that the "geniuses" at the Apple Store can save my iPod? Or am I going to have to shell out another $200+ (this is my second iPod--my iPod 3rd Gen died in 2007) on a product that seems to only have a lifespan of 3 years?

  • IPod not recognized by Windows / iTune

When I connect my iPod using USB 2.0, I now get a "USB device not recognized" error on Windows XP. iTunes also does not recognize that iPod is connected.
I believe this problem may have been caused when my iPod was connected to a friend's speakers. When it first connected, the following error message appeared:
"FireWire connections are not supported. To Transfer Songs, connect the USB cable provided".
After pushing the Selct button to gt rid of the error, iPod worked fine in the speakers and continues to work fine with my FM tuner and other devices.
I've tried the following to fix this problem:
    1. 4 of the 5 Rs. (Can't find a way to restore as I can't get iTunes to recognize my iPod).
    2. Reinstalled iTunes.
    3. Simple restart on computer.
    4. System restore on computer.
    5. Tried to update USB drivers.
    6. Tried to load iPod in disk mode.
    7. Went through all of the Apple Support articles for this problem and tried all of the reccomended steps.
As mentioned, my iPod works fine otherwise and I'd hate to have to send it away to be repaired if there is a simple fix. Also, my wife's Nano is working without problem on the same PC, so I have a feeling that this problem is iPod related rather than PC related (though, I could be wrong!)
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
Is there a way to restore iPod manually (i.e. without iTunes)?
