New Sonnet Encore /MDX G4 processor upgrade?

I looking at New Sonnet Encore /MDX G4 processor upgrade.
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/encoremdxduet.html
Do you think that would make my Power Mac G4 MDD (if I got Dual PowerPC G4 7447A CPUs running at 1.8 GHz) about as fast as my iMac G5 1.8 or my MacBook 1.83 ?

My Dual 1.25 is just as fast as the iMac G5 1.8 it replaced.
Your MacBook beats all of these machines, it is a Dual-Core processor, and it's a newer chip that beats any PPC except the Dual G5's.

  • Sonnet processors- Encore/MDX Duet processor upgrade card

Just wondering how Sonnet processors (specifically the Sonnet Encore/MDX Duet processor upgrade card for the G4 MDD macs) function with Logic Pro.
If anyone is using these particular cards in conjunciton with Logic Pro 7 on the lastest mac OS X, I'd really like to know how they perform? (these are specifically upgrade cards for the G4 MDD edition macs).
I'm looking to upgrade my 867 MgHz dual-pro. G4 MDD with one of these Sonnet cards.
Any feed back would be appreciated.
    Thanks people.

    thanks for your input,
I've checked out that site. It's where i originally read about the Sonnet line of upgrade cards .
Great site for tweaking and learning some good **** about your mac systems.

  • Problem with Sonnet Encore/MDX G4 Duet CPU install

    Hi all vintage MAC'ers
I have had my G4 MDD since new. years ago I bought the Sonnet 1.8 upgrade but never put it in because my MDD died and I am just now got around to fixing and upgrading everything. It is up an running on 10.5.8 with 2 HDD (500) & (300) and 2MB ram. Following the instructions, I am trying to update the firmware before installing the CPU. when I click on the firmware update icon, after 10 seconds it gives me a FATAL ERROR-cannot connect to ROM notice. I have ROM version of 4.4.8f2 which the manual indicates is OK and I am in the programer mode.
Thanks all for any help, I have 4 Macs including a new iMac but I miss my OS9 apps

Thanks for the info Allen. I already have reformatted the 2nd drive to a 175 GB Partition, on Format OS Ext (journaled). the partition shows OS9 drivers installed. I have all the original disks including an OS9 (White background with gold 9, Sherlock 2). However I cannot boot from that disc to install? I have the MDD with dual 125 running now until I install the Sonnet. I got the Sonnet drivers installed finally.  What am I missing? when I rebuilt the machine because it would not start, I replaced the Mother board from eBay. that ended not being my problem, but it was the Power Supply, so I assume my original MB is still good. I never changed it back out when the Power Supply solved my problem. The board is a different color then the original? can that be my problem?
               Thanks for any advice, Gary

  • Installed a new Sonnet. Just a simple question

NEVER MIND. Posted in the wrong area and not sure how to deleat the post.
I just installed a new Sonnet Encore/MDX G4 Duet card on my G4 dual mirror. Everything seems just great at this early point. But I have a question. How does one know it is all working properly and being recognized by the computer. Is that something I can confirm in "System Profiler"? And if so what should I see listed. Just curious. I just want to "see" all is well. Thanks in advance. Jeff

    Hi-
You need to contact Sonnet, or the dealer from whom you purchased the CPU.
Since you have OS X 10.4.9, you probably need a software patch from Sonnet (if available). Or, you can go back to a known, supported version of OS X.

  • Leopard Tiger Upgrade on G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore-Shuts down on install reboot

G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore (upgraded from Dual 450)
    1.25 GB RAM
    130GB HD
    SuperDrive
    Radeon 7500 32MB
    Apple 17" Studio LCD
I've replaced my G4 DP 450MHz with a Sonnet Encore 1GHz upgrade, so I could successfully install and run Leopard. I'm using the upgrade DVD that camee with my iMac Core2.
The G4 has Tiger 10.4.11 installed and ran much faster after I upgraded the Encore 1GHz processor.
Leopard upgrade successfully installs. It reboots and I get the gray screen w/ Apple logo and loader circle animation.
Then the machine shuts itself down- turns completely off! Every time... I've even reinstalled the upgrade and it still happens.
This is also exactly what happened when I used LeopardAssist on the Dual 450 Processor, and a major reason why I bought the 1GHz processor upgrade.
"CPU Accelerator" was used on the G4 but I disabled it from startup before installing the upgrade. Also used in Tiger was "RapidoStart", which I didn't disable from startup items. Could that be whats shutting the machine down on Start Up?

As I recall, Leopard checks the original processor speed. If the sonnet upgrade is not specifically marked Leopard Compatible, it probably won't work.
You might attempt to install Leopard from another PPC that meets the requirements, via the FW target disk mode, as others have done. Whether Leopard will actually run is something else.

  • Sonnet G4 1G processor upgrade

Hello, new to forum and I have a question.
I have been running this processor upgrade in my B&W for almost a year now and I know Sonnet had decrease the bus speed back to 66 to get it to work. Has anybody figured out how to get the bus speed back with this upgrade?

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

Trying to weigh ALL costs involved.
    Thanks for any advice!!!

Anything you have that is powerpc code only will not run on a new machine.  OS X 10.8 has no support for powerpc code (universal binary programs should be fine).
Other than that warning, without knowing exactly what programs you have, and what version you are on, it is hard to say whay will or will not migrate alright.
you might need to do some web searching and check apps at sites like roaringapps or on the programs Company web site.

I bought my T61 in the last December.
I followed the link found in the webpage above, but don't know how to do the CPU upgrade?
    Any tips?

Most likely means that if you buy laptop x with cpu y for $1000 they will give you an upgraded cpu for the same price.

  • Sonnet  MDX  1.8 Upgrade

Has anyone done this processor upgrade. I have a single 1.25 MDD 2003 and was wondering about this. I would get a dual 1.42 but can't find one to buy so if anyone can point me in the right direction. How much speed increase can I expect espically for video rendering??

    Hi
I managed to get an original Apple processor card from the clearance/specials section of OWC's website, although they seem few and far between:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/bargains/
Unfortunately I expect most are available as the result of trade-ins as people upgrade their processors, but because there are so few cost effective third party processor upgrades available for the MDD and FW800 G4s (especially the dual 1.25GHz and 1.42GHz models), they rarely ever appear. Even if they do, they're likely to be a similar cost to a third party upgrade, despite being four or five years old and only coming with a limited warranty (I think mine was 90 days).
GigaDesigns are one of the few companies currently offering a dual 7455 based upgrade, similar to the Apple originals with the full 2MB level 3 cache (I expect yours may have 1MB):

  • Processor Upgrade

    Hello,
I'm new to the forum (although have been lurking for a while). I have scoured the forum and can't find my answer, so here it goes...
I have a B&W G3 running at 300 MHz, which over the years I've added a Zip drive to (remember those?), a modem, a DVD burner, and 250 GB hard drive. (I realize now I should've just purchased a Mini, but any way...)
This computer is really a glorified back up system for me. I keep my music on it and other data. I have a video iPod which I synch with this computer. Problem is, when I'm on the iTunes music store I can't view videos because the processor is too slow. I was planning on upgrading the processor (again, I realize I'm pouring money senselssly into this computer, but I guess I'm sentimental), so I did some research, decided on the Sonnet ZIF (I can't recall exactly which one).
After much frustration and following instructions to the letter I couldn't get the computer to recognize the new processor (acellerator card). The tech support at Sonnet couldn't help me either. I ended up returning it and am back where I started.
I'm wondering if anybody has faced this same problem or can give some advice on how to upgrade the processor - if that's even what I need to do to run applications smoothly.
    Thanks in advance,
    LFlo

I just looked up the order and this is what I had:
    Sonnet Encore/ZIF G4/700MHz w/1024k 3:1 Backside Cache.
Compatible with PowerMac G3 Beige, G3 Blue&White, G4 'Yikes' PCI Models.
    New with 3yr Sonnet Warranty.
Now that I see that it says 'Yikes' PCI Models, I'm wondering if I have a 'Yosemite' model? I believe that's what I have because when I upgraded the hard drive I had to purchase some sort of adapter in order to recognize the full 250 GB.
With that being said, any recommendations for a processor to purchase?
    Thanks in advance.
    LFlo

  • Dual 867 encore MDX G4 Duet Updgrade. Should I !!!!!!

i have a G4 Dual 867.if i upgrade the processor to sonnettechs new encore MDX G4 Duet dual 1.25, will that allow me to edit HDV material with final cut pro? In addition, if i upgrade to the fasted VGA card for PCI (motion rec) and install the dual 1.25 sonnettech processor, will I be able to edit HDV footage? Or is all of this a waste of time and I should just save for a G5 mac Pro ? if anyone out there has made this processor upgrade can you post the pros and cons ?

Hello! The short answer is that if you're seriously into video get a Mac Pro. The faster SATA drives, faster memory, faster system bus; in short the everything is faster in the Mac Pro. As I recall the specs you can put 16gb of ram into that powerhouse and coupled with duo core processing.....oh I can only wish! HEAVENTom

  • Mac OS 9 and Sonnet Encore?

I recently decided to install Mac OS 9 for classic. It is an OS 9 disk, not 9.1, etc.
Unfortunately, it won't boot past the grey screen; no happy Mac or anything.
    Any ideas?
My dad's PowerMac G4 booted OS 9 fine from the disk.
The differences between his and mine:
    Mine has more RAM
    Mine has a 1.4GHz Sonnet Encore/ST
Mine has an Nvidia GeForce2 MX instead of it's original ATI Rage 128 Pro.

    Hi, Xilmwa -
    Mine has a 1.4GHz Sonnet Encore/ST...
Many folk who have added a processor upgrade to their machine have reported that they are no longer able to boot using the original OS 9 disks that came with the machine; this situation would probably apply also to early (or even late) retail OS 9 CDs.
The solution that they've reported is to put the original provessor back into the machine, install OS 9, then re-install the processor upgrade.
Mine has an Nvidia GeForce2 MX...
Another obstacle may be the NVidia card.
Retail versions of OS 9 earlier than OS 9.2.1 do not include any drivers for NVidia cards. I don't know what the effect of this may be when booting the machine to an earlier OS 9 Install CD. There may be no video at all, or the picture may be distorted, or you may be able to get only one resolution.
Another possible issue - if the hard drive was last formatted using OSX's Disk Utility and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected, then the drive will not be able to be mounted when the machine is booted to any OS 9. The importance of this is that when the machine is booted to an OS 9 Install CD, the installer would not be able to 'see' the hard drive, hence would not be able to install onto it.
This Apple KBase article discusses that problem -
Article #TA20774 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
    <hr>
If you want to have Classic on that machine, it will need to be at least OS 9.1; earlier versions of OS 9 will not work as Classic.
OSX 10.4.x has been reported as being pickier than earlier OSX versions, and seems to need OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 for use as Classic.
Given that issue, and the graphics card issue, you may do well to obtain a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD and install that for use as Classic. That CD does include NVidia drivers.
    <hr>
If you need OS 9 for use only as Classic, and not as a bootable OS, then you can copy a working OS 9.2.x Syatem Folder from another Mac and place that copy on yours. That copy should work fine as Classic, but will not be usable for booting (unless the eource machine is the same model as yours). A simple Finder copy process (drag and drop) is suitable for replicating OS 9 - a cloning utiity is not needed.
You would need to make sure the copied System Folder includes NVidia drivers. You can check for their presence by examining the contents of the Extensions folder and the Extensions (disabled) folder.
