New Sony DCR-SR200 clips don't play audio in iMovie 09

I have previously imported 100's of video clips from Sony DCR-SR200 to imovie 09 with no issue.
I imported several more yeterday and none play the audio...including some that I had previously imported (and work fine) and had left on the camera and re-imorted. I played one of the files with Streamclip and there is audio.
running iMovie 09 v 8.0.6  and OS X 10.6.5
any ideas?

Found the answer to my problem.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1372
Seems that Apple has been reading the Microsoft playbook and by providing a free "upgrade" to iMovie 09 from 08 has now removed the ability to import MPEG2 files directly...where previously you could.
I can now pay to upgrade to '11 which claims to support MPEG2 on this camera. Has anyone else been down this road and paid to fix what Apple broke for free? Cost isn't the issue, just hoping to avoid the hassle of the upgrade to discover it won't work
Thanks

  • Can't import from Sony DCR-SR200 camcorder

Just upgraded to iMovie 08 as I was told my Sony DCR-SR200 was supported at the Apple Store. Also see it listed as a supported camcorder on Apple's support site. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
The HDD of the camera comes up on the desktop as a disk drive but iMovie says a it does not detect a connected camcorder. I can even try to manually import the files and again, iMovie see the HDD as a mounted disk but the MPEG-2 file are grayed out and can't be imported -- even though the dialog box states that it supports MPEG-2 files. I've tried various combinations of when I connect the camera -- before I start iMovie, after, etc but nothing seems to work.
I'm running a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 with Mac OS 10.4.11. Using USB to connect the camcorder.

Exactly. That's what we had to do before we were promised iMovie '08 would solve the problem! I've seen someone say it works with the dcr-sr300, which is the same camera, only with a bigger harddrive.

A very strange thing just happened. While I was writing the first post, I was downloading and installing mpeg-streamclip, and I let it start to convert my movies. Simultaneously, in the background, iMovie suddenly recognized my camera(?), with all the thumbnails appearing in the lower window. mpeg-streamclip was not even done converting the movies, but in iMovie, it looked as though all the movies were ready to be imported. Also, before mpeg-streamclip started the conversion, it asked for the Quicktime plugin, which I have backed up somewhere, but did not bother to install. I proceeded to convert anyway, although it alerted me that it needed to fix timecode breaks. I guessed it would be fine to say OK to that.
Could it be that I simply did not give iMovie enough TIME to recognize the camera.
Since I don't know what helped, I suggest doing exactly what I did. Try downloading mpeg-streamclip from the squared5 website mentioned above, have iMovie running and click on the first "computer" button on the camera's screen to connect to the computer. I had to wait about 5 minutes. I will try this again.
Well, you seem to need to give a 2004 2.5 GHz G5 about 5 minutes to recognize your camera. Everything comes to him who waits. I'm still not sure whether this happened simply because I had mpeg-streamclip installed, or if I never waited long enough before to let iMovie recognize my camera.
It'd be nice if someone knowledgeable solved the mystery.

  • Clips don't play back - screen is white/blank.

Hey... can anyone help with this problem? I thought I'd try here before calling anyone. I don't know how this happened because I don't think I did anything or changed any settings. When I open up iMovie HD and record a clip and then try to play it back, the playback screen is white (blank). The marker at the bottom (i.e. the thing that shows what position the clip is in) moves forward normally, as if the clip is playing, but you see nothing. The still image of the clip shows up fine in the clips section on the right, but the actual clip won't play. HOWEVER, if I go to edit the clip, like add special effects or whatever, it WILL play while I'm messing around with the effects (though obviously the sound doesn't play). So I know the clip, y'know, isn't a figment of my imagination. :P
Anyone know what the **** this is about? Thanks, I'd really appreciate it.

(i.e. the thing that shows what position the clip is in) FFR this is the play head.
Yes, Apple can. First you need to tell them about it and report the bug.
    Subject: I/O API. iMovie
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
If you can confirm the Quartz effects as working please report this as a Bug in iMovie Feedback.
Notice below I did say preview. This is something that has stuck out as it is easily replicable and very odd.
"A glance across all the Apple boards and you can tie everything into this new API as it is the root. QT is a major part but I don't believe it is a problem other than being at a higher degree of accuracy tan in the past, i.e. the Quartz effects in iMovie preview fine.
So no it is not a figment of your imagination. Please report it.
Its all about the I/O API.
    Thanks

  • Clip won't play audio in timeline

I can play and skim my clips in the event browser fine and can hear the audio, but when i bring it down in to the timeline the audio does not play only the clip, and yes in the toolbar the for the pop up menu for the append buttons all is selected, so both audio and video appear in the timeline...
    Cold someone assist please?

The same thing is happening to me, just as Allan first described:
I can play and skim my clips in the event browser fine and can hear the audio, but when I bring it down into the timeline, the audio doesn't play, nor does a WAV form appear in the timeline. Once in the timeline, the clip only shows/plays the video without sound.
This is an entirely new problem for me ... Any help?

  • Clips don't play without stopping

Just started usingiMovie 6:0:1 for the first time, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but when I drag my clips into the clip viewer each individual clip will play, but not all of them together - i.e. the movie will stop at the end of the clip and won't continue into the next one. Any thoughts? Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi abides:
    Welcome to discussions!
You can drag the clips to the timeline and play them all-just be sure not to select any of them...in other words-do not highlight one of the clips or that is all it will play.
    Does that help?

  • Sony Docking station will no longer play audio on Alarm after ios 7 upgrade

I have read through many of the community postings and hate to have to start a new question when there are over 90,000 that have viewed or commented on this same type issue, but I have tried all the suggestions from community users and they work for a test, but then when you set the alarm for the next day, it flashes and no audio. Why is it that Apple is ignoring this huge customer dissatifaction and why is it that they can do this to the users? I read in one stream that they inserted a software to block any "Non-Apple" product from working with their new software. I have 3 phones in this house that have not been upgraded and they work fine. The two that I upgraded will NOT play the audio. The light will flash as if it triggered the alarm, but nothing triggers the iTunes to play. Originally Apple said it was my Sony device. Wrong! So then they said it was iTunes because they iTunes Radio was in the first/primary slot now and I had not signed up or created a Radio station. They did show me how to go into More options and change the priority to place my own music and playlist in the primary and get rid of the iTunes radio and it worked. Next day it didn't. Then I read that if you plug into an Apple peripherial and then a Non-Apple device, it will again shutdown. So I have started doing the Shutdown step every night when placing it on the docking station, never knowing if the Alarm will play/sound at 4:50 or not. Needless to say, I am NOT getting any sleep as I watch the minutes tick towards the waking hour anxiously waiting to see if the phone Will or Will not wake me. I have also seen people mention removing the "SoundCloud" What the heck is that and how do you do it?

In my Sync vehicle, I had to "forget" the SYnc connection in the iPhone Bluetooth settings, then go into the car menu and delete the bluetooth device from the vehicle's system. Once I re-paired from scratch, it has been working fine. Give that a try. If not, try removing the connection from both sides again, then Reset Network Settings from the General Settings before re-pairing.

  • After capturing SOME of my clips don't have audio sync

This particular problem is confusing me because it doesn't happen consistently.
The audio on the tape is fine. Sometimes while capturing a pop up window will appear that says "Analyzing Audio." I don't know how often this has happened because I use telecine logs to capture, and I don't watch the capture.
I did see it happen once though and that clip ended up being out of sync. The clips captured after were fine. So I think the "Analyzing Audio" thing is causing the problem. I've never seen this window before, so I don't know whats happening.
I am logging 1-2 reels a day, so the number of clips is piling up fast. I am noticing about 1 clip per reel when I am watching the clips in FCP.
I hope that's enough information for someone to help :\
    Thanks

    Anyone?

  • Vimeo and vine don't play audio

My iphone 5c is new, all is ok, except in some video apps, like vimeo and vine, no audio in this, the video is ok, but the sound no.
    In youtube isn't the issue
    Someone else suffer this problem?

Note that your System Details List shows multiple Flash plugins.
    * Shockwave Flash 13.0 r0
    * Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0
You can find the installation path of all plugins on the <b>about:plugins</b> page.
You can check the Flash player installation folder for multiple Flash player plugins and remove older version(s) of the plugin (NPSWF32) and possibly (re)install the latest Flash player.
    *(32 bit Windows) C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\
    *(64 bit Windows) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\
That page uses the embed element to play the mp3 audio file and the mp4 video file and doesn't use the audio and video tag that would allow to use the built-in HTML5 media player, so you need a plugin that can handle the content type that the server sends.
The video file ("The Impossible Dream - Richard & Adam BGT.mp4";Content-Type: video/mp4) plays for me with the VLC plugin without problems.
The audio file ("Flying Thing - Gentle Soul.mp3";Content-Type: audio/mpeg) doesn't start for some reason when embedded, but does play if I paste its link in the location bar.
You need a plugin that can handle these content types to be able to play those files.
Possible choices include QuickTime and VLC.

You can check on the about:plugins page what content type a plugin supports.

  • Sony-DCR SR100

I bought the new Sony DCR SR100...it has no firewire port...it has only USB for downloading video (it is a tapeless camera...it is a videocamera that records to hard drive)...i can't download to my power book G 4since Apple program uses only download via fire wire...any ideas? is there a 3rd party application?

Okay, one thing at a time..
"..You may be able to download its videos into iPhoto, as that now imports the videos which digital stills cameras can shoot.." ..If you have the latest iMovie, you should also have the latest version of a program called "iPhoto".
It's primarily a program for downloading, storing and editing photos. However, the latest version(s) will also download movies (..automatically..) from digital stills cameras: cameras which normally take photographs, but (..on many cameras..) also shoot video clips onto a little 'chip' or removable card inside the camera. (..Just as many movie cameras also shoot stills..)
If you connect your camera to your PowerBook via the USB cable, and switch the camera to Play mode, and then to Stop, and you then start the "iPhoto" program on your PowerBook, the program may - I haven't tried it - see that the camcorder is connected, and may look inside it for a folder which holds videos, and may then offer to import the video into iPhoto.
If it does, and if you let the program import whatever it finds, it may then create little 'thumbnail' pics inside iPhoto to represent these videos.
You could then select one, or more, of these clips, and click on 'File' and 'Export' in iPhoto, and export one or more of these to your 'Movies' folder, ready for editing with iMovie. (..I'd explain how to move these videos to the 'Movies' folder, or how to edit them from the 'Pictures' folder, where they may be sitting, but I won't bother with that just now. Let's just do one step at a time..)
If iPhoto doesn't recognise the camcorder, or the movie clips sitting in the camcorder, then Plan B:
"..with this new camera, i plug it in...and an icon appears on the desktop but no program opens...if i open the icon, there is a collection of folders (none of which make sense to me.." ..Good, so far..
I don't have this camera, so I don't know the names of the folders you see when you double-click on the icon to "open" it. But here's how to find out which items are - probably - your movies, and how to "drag'n'drop" them (..i.e; how to move them from the camcorder to your Apple..) very easily.
    (a) Open each folder, and look for anything which ends in .AVI or .MPG or .MPEG ..those are the likely names of movie files. So anything called, for instance, "D0001397.MPG" or maybe "D0002738.AVI" is probably a movie. If you see a name like that, click once on it to highlight it, and then hold down the 'Apple' key (..just to the left of the Spacebar at the bottom of the keyboard on your Apple..) and jab the letter "i". That combination of keys will then "get Info" about that file.
A window should pop up showing details about that file, such as the "Kind" of file it is, and - more importantly - its "Size". If the Size is only small, something like, say, "12KB", then it's too tiny to be a movie. If the size is more like "300KB" or bigger, then it probably IS a movie!
(..Likely sizes go up from, say, about 200KB or more, all the way to 999KB and then change to 1MB or more, such as, say, 8.7MB. Sizes then go beyond 999MB to 1 or more GB..)
If it ends in .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI and is a large size, then all the other files which have the same endings (..such as .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI..) will also be movies. You could then - with that file selected (highlighted) - just drag it across to your 'Movies' folder (which should be showing on the left-hand side of the computer screen) by holding down the mouse button on your PowerBook and dragging your finger across the 'trackpad' area, then releasing your finger off the mouse button when the file's name is sitting on top of the word 'Movies'. That's "drag'n'drop". The file will then be copied from the camcorder, via the USB cable, into the Movies folder on your PowerBook!
You could then select all of the similarly-named items, such as .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI, by clicking on one of them, then holding down the 'Apple' key and clicking in turn on each of the others ..if they're separated by other-named files in between.. and that will select all of those files, one by one.
But if all the similarly-named files are all next to each other, you could just click on the first one, then hold down the Shift key, and click on the last one. Then all the files between and including the first and last will all be selected!
Then just "drag'n'drop", as before, and all those chosen files will be copied at the same time!
..But maybe, before copying them all, just try playing the first one which appears to be a movie file ..just to be sure. You can do this by holding down the "ctrl" key (bottom-left) while you click on the file's name (..eg; "D0001397.MPG" or "D0002738.AVI"..) and when the window pops up saying "Help - Open - Open With - Get Info.." etc, slide your mouse down to "Open With" and then choose "QuickTime", and maybe the file will play its video. If it does - all's OK! ..Drag'n'drop them all, and they'll be playable, but will probably need further fiddling-around-with to make them play - with sound - in iMovie. To do that "fiddling-around" you'll probabaly need to "..download and use this MPEG2 Works program to convert the Sony videos into an iMovie-compatible format!.."
And to download it, just click on those blue(?) words "use this MPEG2 Works program" above, and that'll take you to the web page from where the program can be downloaded.
I haven't written (b) because this reply is long enough for now. Maybe after I've had breakfast I'll write siggestions (b) and (c).
Meanwhile, other people may give their suggestions, which may be even better than these!..
P.S: Matti suggests an alternative to MPEG2 Works, called MPEG Streamclip - click on that blue link - (..which I'd forgotten about..) in his nearby post in this topic, here.

  • VHS to DV tapes...problem with new  Sony camcorders

I had a nice Sony miniDV camcorder, the DCR HC 30. Worked great to record almost all of my VHS tapes to DV, which I am using to created my iMovies. The camcorder worked fine in this mode. It then had a problem with regular recording, capturing the audio, but not video. Known problem to Sony, who repaired the camcorder at no cost. It worked great again, but the last time I went to record from my VHS tape, it worked for an hour, and then the touch-screen menu failed to respond to touch. (Another story).
I also have a newer Sony camcorder, the DCR HC 26. Connected it to the VCR to record from the VHS tape. I then discovered that this camcorder will allow recording FROM the camcorder TO the VCR with the AV connector, but if I want to record FROM the VCR, it will only work using the DV connector into an iLink port (Firewire).
I went to the 'Sony Style' store (yes,Palo Alto has everything!) and the guy first insisted it could be done with the new HC 38 and 48, but after he actually read the manuals, it was the same as the HC26: must have a Firewire port on the VCR. How dumb is that? How many of us have all these old VHS tapes, probably old VCRs too, and none of the old ones will have FireWire ports!
I have always recommended copying VHS footage to DV tapes, and now I am not going to be able to do that unless I get a converter. Seems a bit expensive for just the few VHS tapes that I forgot to convert previously.
I tried to see if the HC 30 can be repaired again....Sony wants $211 just to check it out. I can buy a new camcorder for $320 so it doesn't seem worth it unless I can connect the touch-screen failure with the problem with video recording that was supposedly corrected.
May have to get a converter.....last resort is another old camcorder Sony TRV something. It is on its last legs, but maybe it could work for a few hours more!
Wanted to let it be known that direct recording from an old VCR to new Sony miniDV cannot be done.

Hi tilman - yes - bottom line is not to discard an old vidcam with analogue-in when buying its 'higher-speced(?!) replacement - although that doesn't help Beverly with her problem.
There must be large numbers of second-hand cams with that function being sold as people rush to buy DVD vidcams etc, so it will be worth looking out for a good cheap one.
It seems that soon the only mini-DV cams will be higher-end models, some of which, being larger, have much reduced portability. Ah! Progress!

  • Capture(or import) from Sony DCR-SR75E to Adobe Premiere CS3

    Hello,
I have an Adobe Premiere CS3 installed in my mac.
I have used it with my Sony Fx-1 perfectly.
I purchased an new sony dcr-sr75e handycam and have problem capturing or importing.
When I connect the camera to the computer, I don't open capture, and when I try to import the mpg files, I only get the video of the files and I don't get the audio, and the video is imported very low quality. Can you please help me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Levent

Copy the files from the camera to your PC then import them into Pro. Pro only captures through firewire.
If the audio contains ac3 copy the ad2ac3dec.dll file from Encore in Program Files and paste this in the root of Pro CS3.
Reimport all files or start a new project.

  • Sony DCR-HC30 --- footage in iMovie breaks apart upon import

    Hello,
I'm having trouble importing camcorder footage from my Sony DCR-HC30.
The footage plays fine in the camcorder but after I transfer it to iMovie, It breaks apart and the transfer stops.
I have successfully transferred footage from this camcorder into iMovie in the past.
I've tried a new firewire cable but it hasn't helped --- although at least
iMovie recognizes the camcorder now (with my old firewire cable it didn't)
Any assistance would be much appreciated
    Thanks very much!
    Mike

    Hi Sue,
I got the footage from my camcorder safely on board my PowerBook (and am backing up to an external hard drive even as we speak --- certainly nothing wrong with my stalwart and intrepid firewire port!)
    Woo Hoo!!!!!!!
I can now proceed with my project --- work on which came to a screeching halt several days ago...
    (It'll be on www.computershy.com)
Just as the import was starting from iMovie (during my many failed attempts) --- I briefly saw something like "importing QuickTime movie".
If iMovie was under the impression that it was importing a QuickTime movie from the camcorder, that would explain the distorted footage (but not why iMovie was having problems seeing the camcorder at all...)
I didn't see that message during the imports thad did work.
    I'm gettting a new camcorder
Thanks for all your help! You were there in my time of need!

I have all the latest updates for iLife, iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Quicktime. None of those applications will open the imported mpeg.

    igor4443

    Hi Igor,
    welcome to the  board
... hm, sorry to say, but:
iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
you try to teach the old dog new tricks... just one kind of mpegs can be handled with iM, that is mp4, imported via iPhoto6 (some stillcams can record a kind of "movin' images"...)
sooo, you need to convert your stuff...
mpegs are meant for playback only, they are a delivery format (thanks, Lennart, for this phrase).. editing/processing such files, needs to demuxx them => 3rd party tools...
there's a very good and free solution:
    Streamclip (free)
not using a miniDV camcorder, you miss the convenience of the iApps...
