New SSD + 8GB RAM on 2011 MBP - Having Issues

I just installed a new 128GB Vertex 4 SSD and 8GB of RAM into my late-2011 13" MacBook Pro. I did a clean install of Lion on the new drive and enabled TRIM support. Although I have seen a slight difference in performance, it is taking forever to download large files. Currently it is downloading between 200-400KB/S. It has been running for an hour and not even a fourth of the way done. When I downloaded the application before on my stock 750GB HDD it only took about 30 minutes.
What do you think is causing this major decrease in download time? Is there anything I need to do with the new SSD to improve performance?

I started to download iPhoto from the App Store but ended up pausing it because it was taking forever. I then unplugged and reset the Internet connection thinking that could be an issue. I havn't tried to resume the iPhoto download yet but I did start to download Left 4 Dead 2 off Steam. It's downloaded 3500MB out of 13000MB with a peak download rate of 910KB/S. The average has been between 400-600KB/S since I last posted.
If it is the internet then it is going to be what its going to be. Even so, is there anything else I need to do with the new SSD then? I've read about updating firmware but also read not to update it for the Vertex 4. I tried doing as much research as possible on what I needed to do for installation but this is my first time with it all.

My Quad is as quiet with 10.4.5 as it was on arrival Jan 31, with 10.4.2
Altivec Fractal Carbon gives the CPU too much chance to cool down. I've got other ways to drive the CPU to sustained 100% load. Yes, the fans speed up, but it's still pretty quiet. I've run it at 100% for hours.
I like the idea of taking things gradually. If you can wait a few days before making big changes, it can make things much easier. 3-4 weeks is very conservative, but great if you have that much patience.
My Quad has been up full-time since I got it. Works perfectly.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M in 2011 MBP-Graphics Issues-Second Life

Since there were no responses to my question, I have re-worded it.  Second Life runs fine on my late 2009 iMac i7 with it's ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. SL freezes at boot up on my new 2011 MBP with it's more powerful graphics card.  Message is that "Your system contains a graphics card that is unknown at this time.  This is often the case with hardware we haven't had a chance to test.  Second Life will most likely run properly but you may need to adjust  your graphics settings to something more appropriate..."  Nope...I have to Option Command, Esc to force quit.  Feedback on this minor issue appreciated.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Best Alternative to Expensive Apple RAM for 2011 MBP i7 Upgrade to 8GB?

I'm about to upgrade my 2011 13" i7 to 8GB. I was wondering if there is a consensus on the best non-Apple RAM available for this MBP. I understand that one has to be careful about the RAM chosen to stay trouble free.

As long as it meets the require specs, and you purchase from a reliable dealr, then it doesn't matter whose RAM you purhase. I purchase mine from DataMem while others prefer OWC.

The RAM is definitely wrong, remove the newer DIMM's that you installed and replace with old ones, how the iMac recognises that there is 64GB blows me as it only supports half of that!
I don't know whether you got them from Crucial.com or a 3rd party retailer, but this time make sure you get the correct RAM, the Crucial site has a scanner to help you purchase the right RAM.

  • Kernel panics increasing after installing new SSD with Mavericks on 2010 MBP

I'm having more frequent random reboots on my recently upgraded MacBook Pro. (mid 2010, Processor: 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7, Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, external monitor: LG Flatron IPS235)
The almost 5yr old original hard drive started making the tell-tell scratching noises and the MBP would randomly reboot 1 or 2 times a week.
I had the HD replaced with a new 480GB SSD drive by certified pros. I mentioned the spontaneous reboots to the pro and he told me that it was probably due to the faulty HD.
The new drive came with 10.9 already installed, whereas I had been running 10.6.8 in order to keep a lot of the older software I relied on.
So accepting the loss of quite a few applications, I proceeded to install just the apps I needed, as needed them. Then the random reboots started happening, a lot more often, up to 2x a day, browsing the web  or just checking email. The one thing I could do to trigger the crash, ironically enough, was by scrolling on the new iMac 5K landing page- halfway through "zooming out" (scrolling) in the waterfall image would shut 'er down.
Could it be the RAM? VRAM? The monitor?  Updating my beloved MBP cost $575 (and several apps), so I'd like to go back to the same pro with information that could save me $$ on troubleshooting. I'm afraid to install the 10.9.x updates for fear it will bring my MBP to it's knees.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

  • Does Mac osx 10.8.2 support FDE SSD drive on early 2011 MBP?

    Hi mates,
I need to secure all my datas in my MBP i5 early 2011 model. Thinking of changing the harddisk to a new Samsung 840 Pro series that come with the FDE feature. Will I be able to use the FDE feature on the SSD that comes along?
    Thanks!

  • SSD Raid 0 With 2011 MBP

I have a late 2011 15" MBP with 2x Intel SSD x25-M 160gb drives (1 in the main bay, 1 in the optical bay). I chose these drives due to the limited bandwidth in the optical bay (it's restricted to 3g vs the main bays 6g).
I have found an issue that is rather curious when trying to install OSX onto the machine and it concerns the disk utility:
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Mavericks will NOT see either SSD installed in either bay using the disk assistant (no format or parition possible of either drive.  I can place the drives in external cases and they work flawlessly i.e. you can partition each drive but when you put the partitioned drives back in the MBP Mavericks will not see them).
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Lion will see BOTH drives and will configure raid 0 successfully (once installed I ran the Mavericks install and it did not see the drive with Lion Installed on it so no upgrade was possible - I ran the internet download as well as trying to install Mavericks from an external firewire drive using a previous download of OSX 10.9).
I am about to try installing Mountain Lion to see if it will detect the SSD raid drive (it's downloading now).  If that works I will try to then upgrade to Mavericks (doing this incrementally kinda *****).
I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem?  I have seen plenty of YouTube videos of people putting two SSDs in their MBPs and running Raid 0 with plenty of success.  I'm just wondering if maybe there's a brick wall with anything other than a 13" MBP?
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy - I think you missed part of the information in my last post:
I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY created and installed OSX (Snow Leopard, Lion, & Moutain Lion) using the Disk Utility provided by Apple to install fresh versions of each and they work perfectly.
I DID NOT clone these from external drives.
I would like to install Mavericks (I don't care at this point about the raid config but it would be nice) but the disk utility version of Mavericks (that you need to install that specific OS) will not see the SSDs installed inside the MBP.  Even if I install Mountain Lion on a single drive and then try to upgrade to Mavericks the drives are not seen.
Even if i could clone the Mavericks install from an external drive onto the internal raid I still can't see either drive to even do it.

  • Could you install a new quiet fan in a 2011 MBP?

I was just wondering if the new 2012 quiet fans interchangeable with the 2011 13" MBP? It seems like they use the same component layout.

Here's a pretty good description of the steps with pictures: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-17-Inch/SuperDrive/55/8/Page-1 . You didn't say which model you have, these are the instructions for all but the very last 1.67Ghz Hi-rez 17" PowerBook.

  • New i7 8GB RAM MacBook Pro losing network in Windows 7

I have a new MacBook Pro running Windows 7 64-bit. In Windows it wil sporadically lose both ethernet and wifi at the same time, dropping to a self-assigned 169.254 IP address. To fix it I need to either toggle wifi or disconnect the ethernet and plug it back in.
This is a very annoying issue as the only reason I use Windows is to play games and I get disconnected at the worst times. This is whats strange though, when both ethernet and wifi cut at the same time, unplugging ethernet and plugging it back in will fix BOTH network connections. On wifi only, I am forced to disconnect and reconnect. I have tried reinstalling he drivers with no luck.
This happens on a wide range of places at my decent-sized college campus. I haven't tested it anywhere else as I only use my MBP for Windows at school, I have a desktop for gaming at home. Has anyone experienced this? My friend has the same i7 and his MBP seems to occasionally disconnect as well, just not as often as mine.

I think I have isolated the source of this problem. It's the Pitstop Professional 9 plug in. I un-installed this, and everything opens quicker than greased lightning. I re-installed it and it's back to slowsville.
Unfortunately Pitstop is essential to my workflow.
Until recently I did my pre-press on a Mac G5 with Acrobat Pro 7 and Pitstop 6.5. I never had this problem with slow file opening. But it seems that the delays would occur when I used the plug-in with large complex files.. So it would open files as fast as you'd expect from an elderly machine. But starting to use Pitstop would result in a prolonged period of staring at a spinning beachball.
I wonder is there any way to stop the Pitstop plug-in from initializing until it is used? So the plug-in stays inert until you select the tool from from the menus.

  • 2011 MBP having limited screen resolution in Bootcamp

    Hi All,
Running Bootcamp 4.0 with Win7. Bootcamp software is installed, drivers seem to be in place.
The screen has a limited resolution though, not the full 1440 x900 that it should have. Clicking on screen resolution only shows the one option for resolution.
    Any thoughts?
A few other data points, loaded the bootcamp partion up in Parallels and I get the full resolution experience.

That's odd.  Which model are you running?  13", 15", or 17"?
It's entirely possible that the Intel (13") or AMD (15"/17") video driver might not have installed properly.  Check the Device Manager (Start > right-click Computer > Manage, then click Device Manager at left of the resulting window).  If under Display Adapters you see "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter", or a "Video Controller" under Other Devices, then this may be your issue.
Running Boot Camp Setup a second time should fix this, but it's also possible that the driver CD did not burn properly and therefore the folders that contain drivers might be corrupted enough so as not to have been read during Setup.  In this case, your best bet is to burn the CD again--to a known-good CD-R.

  • Early 2011 MBP Recurring Issues (Safe Boot Startup, MerpAD Office365, Recovered files, etc.)

    Hello,
I realize there are threads about Safe-Boot mode. And about MerpAD Office365 files. And about "Recovered files" folders in the trashcan.
But my early 2011 MacBook Pro is doing it all. And no one has been able to figure out why.
My MBP has been to the Genius Bar so many times the people there know me by first name, and remember every visit. To date, here's what's been done to it:
    1. Hard drive wipe and re-install (thinking it was the software)
    2. Replaced bluetooth keyboard and mouse (thinking it was a problem with Bluetooth)
    3. Numerous in-store diagnostic checks (thinking it was the hard drive)
    4. Replacement of memory chip, logic board, magsafe charger coupling, and battery (thinking it was a problem the Geniuses couldn't figure out)
Everything has, essentially, been replaced. Yet, it still starts in Safe Boot mode -- three times this week so far, each time taking 5-6 minutes to recover and restart so that I can use it.
    Here's what I'm running:
Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
I've owned Macs since the late 1990s. This is my third MacBook Pro. Nothing I've ever owned from Apple has ever been this prone to failure and frustration.
Can anyone help figure out what's going on with this machine?
    Thank you in advance.
    Bill

I'm having the exact same problem. Since installing Yosemite, my iMac (late-2013 model with 32GB of RAM) is constantly hanging ... the spinning beach ball pops up constantly. It pops up when I open files, it pops up when I open windows, it pops up when I close apps, it pops up when I open apps, etc., etc., etc. I've tried everything and can't get it to stop. And to make matters worse, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2010 iMac. It's driving me nuts.

  • Early 2011 MBP - Power Issues

So, for the last couple months my Macbook Pro will shut off when it's processing a lot (like a game) or if the charger is taken off. Usually it won't start without the charger on it, and it takes awhile to start up. The gray Apple screen will load for 10 or 20 seconds, then it will either flash light gray or blue. If it flashes gray, the whole computer will die. Sometimes it restarts automatically, sometimes it stays off. If the screen flashes blue, the user account screen shows up. It always starts if I do a safe boot.
I've done most of this stuff (SMC, PRAM, Archive/Install, Onyx, Diagnostics, Repair Disk, etc.) and I've taken it to the Genius Bar. They said they'd have to send it in to figure out what's wrong with it, but my Mac is no longer under warranty. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and what the issue ended up being. Right now, I'm afraid it's a logic board issue, because I have no idea what else it is.

I just had a similar issue with my 2008 MBP 10.6.8, blue screen, gray screen, not booting, eventually no safe start, as well as other things.  Did all the same stuff to figure it out, being that it is my kids machine now, and money is a little tight, I went to the Apple store and they gave me a flat rate to make functional again. $310 they replaced HDD, logic board, video card, reinstalled OS, and ran a full diagnostics.  It works as new now for about $1000 less than I would have had to spend, I'll be really happy to get another year from it ,as it is basically refurbished.  So, it could be your logic board, or even more, I thought it was just the drive that died. They told me no charge for the diagnosis, and the repair was a lot cheaper.  You might want to have it checked, oh by the way, the tests I did all came back as OK, but obviously they were not.  Best of luck:)

  • I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and having issues with utilities screen.

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011. I want to reformat my hdd to start from scratch. My issue is when I am on the utilities screen I am unable to click on anything. I want to delete my current partition but I am unable to click on Disk Utilities. Please help me!

According to your profile your Mac is running v10.7.3 Lion.
If that is the case, to reformat the hard drive you need to use Lion Recovery not Disk Utility.
