New Sun V490 Servers

All,
I got new sun server v490's which seems to have have a problem powering up.
I plug the power cords and turnkey to diagnostic to enable the power button all I see is the amber light.
How to power it up?????????????????
Thanks
Joe

I had a similar issue when installing a 490 recently.. and it was because i forgot that the server requires 220v power. Seems like an easy thing to remember, but of course, I forgot! I got the exact same behavior as you are seeing, but after getting the right power to it, it powered up fine. Could that be it??

    This is one approach. Might I suggest that if they are so hot to get you to buy one of these boxes that you try it another way ...
    1. Ask them for a list of references in your area.
    2. Ask them to deliver one to you for 60 days, no charge, for eval.
    My experience with my apps and my workload may be very different from yours. Also, once it is in your possession you find not
    only determine the relevant metrics but it becomes a "used" box if you decide to purchase it.
    PS: Oracle is now in the process of purchasing Sun and that might be a good thing.
    Except that Oracle also wants to keep on very good terms with Dell, HP and IBM so Sun may be expendable.
    Do you really want to make a decision about Sun until you see more of Oracle's cards on the table?
    I would be highly inclined to wait until after OpenWorld.

    I beleive they need 220~240 V input. we were plugging it on 110~120VThat is correct.
    The earlier V480 systems shipped with PSU's that would work on 100-240 VAC but the V490 systems required the nominal 220-volt source to function.
    It was a "surprise" for the Sun Microsystems support center in the first few weeks, back in 2004, when this gotcha first surfaced as customers with data centers full of existing V480s started adding sparkling shiny new v490s to their pools of hardware.
    I was there (in a past incarnation) but we soon recovered and were able to resolve such frustrations quickly when the phones started to ring off the hook.
    It was compounded by the additional circumstance that V490s shipped with an OBP default of a max-diag boot when the v480s had a simple POST. Customers with brand new systems wondered why it would take their boxes 30 minutes to POST the first time after removing it from the shipping crate. (This diag-POST-as-the-default issue occurred with the V880-to-V890 transition as well.)

  • Experiences with Sun T2000 servers on SAP systems

    Hello,
    We are currently involved in a project to migrate our SAP systems from a Windows 2003 to a Solaris 10 platform.  Our application server layer will be based on Sun T2000 servers for both ABAP and Java stacks.
    I would be interested in hearing from anyone using T2000s in the application server layer to understand their perception of the performance of these systems.
    Thanks in advance,
    Brendan Byrne

    We have actually solved the issues sourrounding performance on sun multi threaded servers.
    What you need to do is create a 'Zone' on the solaris server and then allocate resources to the zone.
    Then sap seems to fly.
    This is fully supported by the way.
    Just set this up with NW7 on a T2000 and some T5120's
    Basically what occurs is that you setup SAP on one zone.
    You then allocate the full 64cpus to this zone, as well as the 32/64gb of ram.
    SAP runs as one thread within the zone, but the zone then allocates this thread across all the cpus.
    Works like a dream,
    Regards

  • Porting Solaris 10 from Fujitsu to Sun V490

    Hi
    Does anyone know how to take an existing copy of Solaris (and environment ) running on a Fujitsu box to
    restore on a Sun V490 Hardware.
    How can you get this to work ?
    basically I have a Fujitsu server runnig Solaris 10 and I want to copy everthing from this Server and make it run on a Sun V490
    with miniumum effort and avoiding a re-install ?
    Any ideas/help is much appreciated.
    Thank You
    Arun

    Hi Arun.
    Unfortunately it's not a minimum effort job. First and foremost the physical characteristics of the systems are different so if you 'lifted and shifted' the OS you'll be missing the packages and patches needed to get the OS working on the V490. The OS is very unlikely to boot. Adding the necessary packages and patches would also be time consuming.
    As the OS should contain no application specific data it's much quicker and easier to re-install the OS on the V490 and just migrate the application(s).
    The migration is certainly possible but will require a certain degree of knowledge about the current config and what is needed on the V490.

  • Java plugin crashes when creating a new sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11 object

    Hi,
    I have created an applet which signs pdf files and works fine.
    Applet is used in a website that needs client authentication with the same smart card wich is used to sign the documents.
    The java plugin crashes at this line of code. The message showed - The java applet plugin has failed
    sunpkcs11 = new sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11(pkcs11);
    I think it crashes because the pkcs11 module is still used, the light of the smart card reader is not blinking is a fixed light.
    I haven't got an error log because the java plugin crashes. Only shows the log lines before that line of code.
    Later the sunpkcs11 provider is added if the smarcard is unplugged and java plugin don't crashes.
    Security.addProvider(sunpkcs11);
    If I unplug the smart card after client authentication and before sign a document, the java plugin don't crashes and later, the provider is added, and the document is signed and the light of the smart card reader is blinking before signing.

    I have tested the same applet with firefox, in windows 7, windows 8, ubuntu 13.10 and fedora 19, and works and signs documents after client authentication.
    when applet is loaded in windows is not using pkcs11. But I haven't got the same problem.
    But in mac os x v10.8 and v10.9 java plugin crashes.
    Is there a way to disconnect programatically the pkcs11 module or any other solution?
    I'm not sure why the java plugin crashes. Has got any relationship with the bug 8026833?
    Any suggestion?.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you had Errors TF30162 and TF250025 when creating a New Team Project in TFS2012 with Sharepoint Site on Visual Studio.
    The Errors TF30162 seemed that the reports for TFS could not be uploaded due a permission problem. The fix was really easy.
    Go to your team foundation server
    Open the administration console.
    Click on Reporting
    Click on Edit
    Click on Reports Tab
    Enter the credential for the Reports
    Save
    Click on Start Jobs
    In addtion, the problem may be due to the caching done by Team Explorer in Visual Studio. Exiting the copy of VS on the client and reloading it will fix the problem as the updated team process settings will cached locally.
    To resolve the Errors TF250025, you will need to register a new internal URL for the SharePoint site using Alternate Access Mappings.
    Here are two great blogs for you to take a look at:

    If still no help, for quick and accurate answers to your questions, it is recommended that you initial a new thread in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server forums.

  • Could it be that a 5 year old Sun T3 is 2x faster than a new Sun 3320?

    We just purchased a brand new system to replace a system that has been in production for over 5 years and I am finding very disappointing performance results.
    The old system is a SunBlade 2000( 2x 900 MHz, 4 GB RAM, Solaris 9) with a Sun T3 fiber array (9 x 36 GB 10K RPM drives, RAID 5 with a hot spare).
    The new system is a Sun T2000 ( 8-Core 1.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM, Solaris 10) with a Sun 3320 SCSI array (12 x 300 GB 10K RPM drives, RAID 5 with a hot spare) + Ultra 320 SCSI card.
    I first moved over our applications and ran a few tests and found that jobs were taking about 50% longer to complete. So I decided to take the application out of the equation and just run some basic test to compare the 2 systems.
    Using some basic dd tests, I could push about 90 MB/s through the T3 and only about 40 MB/s through the 3320. I also tried running IOZone and it showed the same results. The T3 was 40%-50% faster on all reads, writes and combination operations. I tried all sorts of configurations with the 3320 including single bus and split bus as well as different RAID levels. Nothing seems to help the 3320.
    I've opened a support case with Sun but they are bouncing me around support from group to group, from hardware to storage to kernel and back again. My VAR is doesnt seem too interested in helping either. I'm still hoping for the best because my upper management is not happy that we spent over $65K for new equipment and our applications are going to be slower.
    Could it be that a 5 year old Sun T3 is 2x faster than a new Sun 3320?

    Not sure if any of this will help. but it doesn't hurt to cover the basics. You might want to start by double checking the SCSI negotiation between the server and the array. Below is an example from our 3310 that we've deliberately misconfigured.
    sccli> show channels
    Ch Type Media Speed Width PID / SID
    0 Drive SCSI 80M Wide 6 / 7
    *1 Host SCSI ASYNC Narrow 1 / N/A*
    2 Drive SCSI 80M Wide 6 / 7
    *3 Host SCSI ASYNC Narrow N/A / 1*
    6 Drive FC(L) 1G Narrow N/A / N/A
    7 Host LAN N/A Serial N/A / N/A
    sccli>
    What we have here are host channels that have not negotiated UP to desired parameters. Please keep in mind that we've set this up purposely in our lab for training. As you can see the host connections never go into synchronous transfer and they also never negotiate to a wide bus width. This effectively throttles down the connection between the server and array. There are several causes for these types of symptoms.
    - Faulty or incorrect termination.
    - Mismatched hardware.
    - Faulty cable
    - HBA drivers
    - Incorrect SCSI settings.
    Since you mentioned that you have Ultra 320 HBAs and the array is capable of negotiating up to these speeds, I'd suggest you check the negotiated link speed between your array and server. If you find that the SCSI channel is not negotiating up to the desired value, one place you can check would be the "SCSI Options" in the /etc/system file.
    Below is a bit mask for the various setting options
    * SCSI subsystem options
    * Following are applicable to all interconnects
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_LINK 0x10 /* Global linked commands */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_TAG 0x80 /* Global tagged command support */
    * Following are for parallel SCSI only
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_DR 0x8 /* Global disconnect/reconnect */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_SYNC 0x20 /* Global synchronous xfer capability */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_PARITY 0x40 /* Global parity support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST 0x100 /* Global FAST scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_WIDE 0x200 /* Global WIDE scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST20 0x400 /* Global FAST20 scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST40 0x800 /* Global FAST40 scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST80 0x1000 /* Global FAST80 scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST160 0x2000 /* Global FAST160 scsi support */
    #define SCSI_OPTIONS_FAST320 0x4000 /* Global FAST320 scsi support */
    Most systems have a setting of 7f8 which would only bring you to Ultra Fast Wide at 40MB per sec. Factor in the wide bus and your effective through put would be 80MB. If you find that the SCSI Options on your system are not set to support the Ultra 320 HBAs, you may want to bump up the settings here.
    On the array side, you could also check to see if write cache is turned on and working.
    sccli> show cache-parameters
    mode: write-back
    optimization: sequential
    sync-period: disabled
    current-global-write-policy: write-through
    sccli>
    In this array, the global cache setting is correctly set for write-back, but because of a fault in the array, the cache policy has defaulted to write-through. This is most common in single controller arrays (which this is). The array requires two operational controllers for write cache to be in effect.
    Hopefully there is something here that you can use....

  • Does iAS6 run on new Sun "SunFire"? More speed than on a E420?

    Does the iAS6 run on the new Sun "SunFire". I heard it's a true 64 bit
    enabled machine running with a speed of 700 to 900 Mhz.
    If it runs on a new SunFire: how much faster is the SunFire compared to
    a E420 or something similar?
    Klaus

    Yes, of course it will. But it will be in Rosetta-mode, I believe, unless you get your hands on the universal app:
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
    If you don't have Final Cut Studio already it may be an expensive upgrade, but you may be able to call Apple and perhaps there is a way to just upgrade FCP without buying all of Final Cut Studio. (Although I highly recommend DVD Studio Pro over iDVD...)

  • Anyone added a  modem to M4000  / SUN M5000 servers  - via xscf  or other ?

    Hi,
    Have any of you lads attempted to add a std analogue modem to an M class server, on older sun boxes the procedure is clear [ dedicated serial port, use tip with standard settings ] But for modern servers, cannot find any documentation on sunsolve or in server manuals etc - everything is for older class boxes where the procedure is clear.
    New M class boxes have no serial port, the only option is the RJ 45 serial connector on the xscf console card.
    I can connect to the port [ get "connected response from tip ], which is the default local serial console. But cannot get any response from the modem. Tried all sorts of cable combinations. The port is successfully configured for modem dial out. And if i take the modem off a normal terminal console window works fine if i re-enable the console service on the port. I have tried deleting and re-adding the standard ports and their associated port monitor services
    Note i am only trying to get a response from basic AT commands not trying to configure PPP or a remote console or anything.
    Dying to hear from someone who has done it and configured a modem to respond over this port. I assume this is /dev/term/0 or /dev/tty/a.
    Can anyone let me know if i have missed something basic or need a non standard cable

    For those interested, Sun support confirmed it is not possible and suggested it was a bit of a silly request. Though i did state the request was born out of hard core experience, when we completely lost our console and standard networks for 16 hours rendering the xscf card useless

  • Info on Sun Ultra10 Servers, Just to be sure.

    Hello ppl,
    Just a couple of questions on the Ultra10 systems as i'm new to them, bare with me, k.
    1, Tryed to gain access to the bios using F2 but no luck, can anyone help?
    2, Is the bios firmware, is that right..? and where to get upgrades if needed?
    3, I need to install new HDD's to the servers, is there a capacity limit(solaris 9 to be installed), do i need a bios upgrade/firmware..? I have downloaded the installation guides and from the look of them from the inside the HDD's just look like standard IDE devices.
    Any help/links would be most appreciated, thankyou for you time...

    1) The Ultra-10 is not a PeeCee.
    There is no BIOS.
    2) Sun System Handbook.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U10/U10.html
    There is a link on that page for the OBP flash update patch.
    Don't do it until you know what you're doing.
    Note the additional link on that page for the system's Documentation.
    3) Read these forums --- all the hardware forums.
    Go back through about a year of posts. That should take weeks to accomplish.
    The IDE controller on the systemboard has a 28-bit LBA drive size limitation.
    You will only gat a nominal 137GB or less, with the internal drives.

    I have no idea what could be causing this. I can find one link to it on this forum: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9488983 . But the only answer to that query says it is the same as another bug which appears entirely different, not to mention being very old (while talking about an imminent fix), and being related to a different OS and (I think) a different version of sun studio (express vs. normal?).
    Any ideas? Could it be related to having gcc/g++ on the machine?

    Hi,
    I am also facing the same error while upgrading the Sun compiler description as below

    The same file with the same compilation command is getting compiled with compiler version CC: Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 C+ 5.3 2001/05/15 .
    Can anyone suggest what should be the resolution:-
    The code for the ssmalloc.h file is as under:-

  • New Sun 1 Studio 4 Mobile Edition User

    I am new to the S1S4ME and want to use the SerialComm API for development of a MIDlet communicating through the comm port on my PC. I have installed J2SDK1.4.2_04, J2MEWTK 2.1, and obviously S1S4ME. I have placed the comm.jar & javax.comm.properties in the JDK lib dir and the win32com.dll in the JDK bin dir. How do I configure the S1S4ME for use so I can access the methods available in the SerialComm API?
    Thank You
