New superdrive (repair) runs quite loud while watching a DVD

Hello,
I have a new superdrive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N) in my MacBook Pro...
Before, I could watch a DVD and the drive was so quiet, that it nearly was not to be heard...
Now, the new superdrive runs with such a speed, that I can hear it in quiet locations of the film, thats ennoying...
Any idea, what can be done?
Fabian

Hi nik312, welcome to the forums!
If it's a Flash video, what version of Flash do you have installed? 10.1 is a lot faster than v9. But since it also happens in Chess, it could be an issue with OpenGL. Since you've tried the Erase and Install already, I'd try zapping the PRAM by following the instructions here:

If that doesn't resolve your problem, I think it might a fault with your graphics card, and you might need another logic board replacement.

  • My iMac's fan runs quite loudly.

I only got the computer yesterday from Apple, but it was refurbished. It's an iMac 21" 2.7 1TB.

When you say that the 'fan runs quite loudly' do you mean that the fan is making an unusual noise such as a buzzing or clicking sound, or do you mean that the fans sound like they are running at full speed?
If the fan is making a buzzing or ticking noise then that could indicate that something is touching or rubbing against the fan. If you just purchased the iMac then I would contact Apple to arrange for a replacement.
If the fans sound like they are running too fast then it could simply need an SMC reset. To do this, power down the iMac and then disconnect the power cord for ~15 seconds. After 15 seconds plug in the power cord while making sure you don't press the power button. Here's an article that provides additional information on this condition and why it occurs.

  • Screensaver starts while watching a DVD!

Is there any way to stop the screensaver activating while watching a DVD in DVD Player... besides disabling the screensaver altogether?
I wouldn't normally use a screensaver at all, but my Mac MIni is connected to a plasma TV, and I just want to make sure I don't get any burned in images if I accidentally left it on for a while.

I do not know a solution to the DVD Player issue but I may have a workaround for you.
Disable screen saver altogether and use Energy Saver's "Put the display(s) to sleep..." instead.
It will have the side effect of saving on your power bills
The last time I checked (on Tiger) this doesn't work very well for Plasma TVs (the screen goes to sleep fine, but doesn't wake up), but I'll give it another go.

  • New dv6 7014nr runs too loud doing nothing

I recently purchased a dv6 7014nr a few days ago and have barely done anything on it. However, the fan noise is out of control. I've turned off hp coolsense but there is little difference. I don't even feel any air coming out of the vent on the side, but the computer just runs increadibly loud. The laptop doesn't overheat or anything it's just outrageously loud.
I really like the machine aside from this point and i want to do everything i can to try and fix this so i don't have to use something else.
I heard about "updating bios" and turning the feature "fan always on" off. I do, however, game quite a bit on this laptop and am worried about messing up the computer that way. This noise is just intolerable though. It's fine when i'm gaming, i understand that is using a lot of resources. But when the computer is so loud when i'm doing barely anything is what is driving me crazy
is there anything i can do? I've done research ont he internet and all i have found is that it's a design flaw with hp laptops which i hope i may be able to do something about because i don't want to have to returnthis machine.
    Thanks

See if you can go into a store that displays this machine and see if it is as loud as yours.  What worries me is that you can not feel and air flow. Can you see the fan blades with the aid of a flashlight and see if anything is blocking the flow of air like some plastic tape of packaging material. Does the sound make a noise like it is scraping metal fins or rubbing up against anything or just a normal loud fan? Do you monitor the temperature of your laptop? Do you use a notebook cooling pad? You really have to be able to feel the hot air coming out of the fan discharge area.

  • Quitting playback while watching a tv show

I have a 2nd generation Apple TV, that i have had for about a month. It has worked with no problems until the night before last. While watching a show, that was saved in my itunes library, it just stopped playing back, and went to the Apple TV main menu. I then was able to go back to the show and start it over (no option to resume playback), so i just had to fast forward to where i was at.
It worked fine for another minute or so, and then the same thing happened. I had to repeat this cycle about 10 more times to finish the show.

This happened to me too, I have never had this problem and then the new version of iTunes came out and I downloaded that and now my ATV 2 just randomly stops during playback. Is there a solution for this???

  • DVD drive VERY LOUD while watching movies

Maybe it's because I'm used to laptop parts (my other two macs are a MBP and a mini), but it seems to me the Mac Pro I just bought is extremely loud when watching DVDs. I realise the fans have to spin up to make the disc spin, but I don't ever recall hearing that much noise from them. It's certainly louder than the whole computer is running 4 SETI units at once...

The loud noise you are experiencing is because of the reason that the "stock" Sony DW-D150A has a extremely slow read time- as compared to the Poineer DVR111D. The Sony's read time is almost 2 1/2 times slower that the Pioneers.
This noise problem can be solved 3 ways.
1-There is a Firmware flash available that converts the Sony drive to an NEC drive- since they are essencially the same stock drive- just with different firmware. This article explains how to do this:
    http://www.hardmac.com/articles/62/page1/
There is more indepth information on this, and on the Mac Pro overall here:http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/intel/macpro/
2-Replace the "stock" Sony Drive with a Pioneer DVR-111D. They cost around $35-50 @ most places.
3- This is the option that I have done...Install a Pioneer DVR-111D in the second optical drive bay ( making sure that you properly set the Slave/Master jumper cables on each drive-Pioneer DVR-111D Master..Sony DW-D150A to slave). Use the Sony as a second drive to write to only, and then use the Pioneer as the primary drive to read and write to.
This did solve my noisr problems...Hope it helps you..

  • New hard drive running much louder than my orig. HD

    Hi there,
I bought a Seagate Momentus XT hard drive and installed it in my MacBook Pro. It is running considerably louder than the stock HD in my Mac. Is this normal for this particular drive? Can I do anything about it? Its a hybrid drive, could that have something to do with it?
    Brandon

You have a 13" so it only shows the single 'Exhaust' - running right at 2000rpm, which is normal. Your temps are also normal. So I would rule out the fan noise as a possibility. It could be as mende1 says - that Seagate drives are just 'noisier'... I have 4 external drives that are all Seagate and never here them (but they're in enclosures... both Thunderbolt and FireWire 800 connections).
I think that you'll be fine - just don't let any 'chirping' go unheeded.

  • Mac mini fan is very loud when watching a dvd

    Hi,
Just bought a Mac mini (2GBRam 2GHz intel) and when watching a dvd the fan spins very loud which gets very annoying! Is this normal for watching dvd's on the Mini as I have a Macbook with similar specs and there is not much sound from that when watching dvd's. I installed 10.5.1 on the Mini and the Macbook still has 10.4.11...Any ideas?

The reset is always worth trying, just in case the problem is in the system controller. However, I'm not sure that I'd blame MacOS itself for the problem, because it does not appear to be similarly reported elsewhere. As such, I'd say that if you can't resolve this with a reset, you may find the next best option is an erase and install of Leopard, followed by downloading and installing the 10.5.1 update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html
Of course, since an erase and install wipes the hard drive, it is essential you back up your data before you do this!

  • FAN RUNNING VERY LOUD

I am wondering if anyone has had or heard of the fan in a 24" iMac suddenly running quite loud? My computer is a year old and today I turned it on and it sounds like a desktop DELL!! The fan is so loud. Is this an ugly monster rearing it's head? or is this a minor issue that might go away?
    Please help.
    Cheers

It probably means the computer thinks it is overheating. Maybe it is overheating. As Miriam suggests, intense computational activities generate heat. Possibly dust has accumulated on the inside, or where you are positioning the computer is blocking the flow of air. If the software that controls the fan is not working properly the default mode is to run the fan at full speed. Have you run disk utility to verify your drive to check all seems okay?
Alternatively the computer just thinks it is overheating. There are also hardware analysis tools that come on the disc with your Mac.
There's third party utilities that report temperatures, but Apple says you shouldn't reply upon these, and take your computer to a service center.
This isn't one of those liquid cooled CPUs is it? There was a post about one of those overheating recently and the guy found the coolant had leaked and left a puddle under his computer.

  • RE: External speakers don't work while watching DVD on MacBook

Hello, I have a late 2006 white 13-inch MacBook. I have been trying to use an Altec Lansing external speaker while watching a DVD movie on my Mac, in order to increase and improve the sound, but when I plug the speaker cable into the headphones jack on my Mac, no sound comes out of the speaker. The speaker works fine when I plug it into the same jack to listen to music in my iTunes library, so I know the problem isn't with the speaker per se.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? I have tried to play around with the Sound on System Preferences and with the Audio MIDI setup but I'm not sure which setting is at fault. Thanks very much.

Hi, thanks for your response. When I got into Preferences>Disk Setup, under Audio Output, "System Sound Output" is selected (there are no other options listed). Also, "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression" is checked.

  • Screen Sleeps while watching DVD or Stream

    Hello
I have a problem with my PowerBook. I hate the energy saver function. When I use normal programs everything is o.k. and when their is no input it sleeps after a couple of minuten.
The problem is that while I watching an DVD or an Interstream my energy Saving Options put my screen to black because their is no input or mouse moving.
Is their a way to prevent the screen to go to black without switching off the engergy saving options while watching a DVD or Stream??

Disable all sleep functions. IMHO, they're overrated.

  • Was watching a dvd, later, G5 was off - should I worry?

I dozed off while watching a dvd. When I awoke, the computer was off. What could be the cause (it's running just fine, for now)?

I checked, - 'system log' and 'console log' only show today's activity. Next, I opened a new 'system log' window and found activity for predawn yesterday, and I think this corresponds to the time I was asleep:
"Feb 17 03:15:00 terry-browns-power-mac-g5 cp: error processing extended attributes: Operation not permitted"
After this there is no activity until 9:15 that morning, presumably when I restarted the computer.

  • Taking a picture while watchin a dvd

I was wondering if there is a dvd program that will let you take a picture while watching a dvd, or maybe a free download?
    Thank You. Marco

    Sorry littleshoulders!
Your link to Screen Capture @ Pure Mac, lists a number of utilities.
I apologize that I didn't review all of them before I posted.
DVD Capture just happens to be one that I have an independent link for, in my database. So I pinpointed it.
