New tab opens by itself

Hi all,
I noticed this for the first time on 2/7/15 and 2/8/15 as well... One time per day, both times I was reading an article on a different site and a new tab opened itself to youtube... To a Mcdonald's commercial that I had never watched...
I wasn't touching the computer at all, and nothing on the website (Yahoo news) had a link anywhere that I found
Malwarebytes doesn't find anything, and was running other scans through a help group that didn't turn up anything... Has this recently happened to anyone??? Thanks

Does this happen at the same time, or different times?
It could be an add-on or ad-ware.

I didn't keep track of the time... I could see a Mcdonald's popup happening, but not a whole new page in a new tab... What is a good adware program to track that??? Thanks

• How do I delete a toolbar that was added by a plugin? Plug-in's been uninstalled, but the toolbar is still there and any new tabs open on their search engine (even though I have Tab Mix set to open tabs on a duplicate page). Help?

Running Firefox on Windows XP3. I installed a plugin from Savevid.com, which they now require. (I've used that site for at least a year with no problem ever.) Everything was fine but it added a toolbar to my browser, and it seems to have reset Firefox somehow so that any new tab opens on "Searchqu", some low-rent search engine. I uninstalled the plug-in altogether, but the toolbar is still there, and I can't make the reset on the search engine go away. I use Tab Mix Plus (also never had this problem before with it), but no matter what I do, the tabs will not open to anything other than searchqu. (Tab Mix has the option to open to a duplicate tab - what it was using BEFORE all this - but changing that no longer has any effect.)
Anyone know how to deal with a problem like this?

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• How do I disable the "New Tab opened" button that appears for 3secs when I open a new tab?

Dear Helpful Open Source people.
I would like to disable the "New Tab opened" that appears for 3secs when I open a new tab?
I usually open tabs from a search engine's results page expecting the links to be of varying quality. This means that it is efficient to open several links from that page and review and close them sequentially later. A reality of the output of search engines is that your 1st link is sedom the one you want.
This button clutters an already small phone screen. I've hardly the space to click outside it and move on often clicking it by accident. Waiting prevents me scrolling to click the next link for 3 seconds or worse when I scroll prematurely I accidentally click it and jump to that Tab prematurely. I don't need to be told what I just did. I know... There is a perfectly functional tabs button in Firefox Android that let's me jump to my new tab in less than second with 2 presses when I wish to do so.
I appreciate that it's "only" 3 seconds and a 1st world problem, but browsers and OS designers aspire to fast customisable function. Maybe there's a way to get rid of this button?
The button is shown in section 3 of "Open a Link in a New Tab" in this article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-tabs-firefox-android
PS. Mozilla - great work with the Sync function keep developing!!

For some reason, Android calls that little notification bar a "toast" so that's the new tab toast. It was added in Firefox 12.
I can't see any preference to suppress it, so I think that would require filing a new bug (request for enhancement). If you feel strongly, I think you are the best person to file it.

• How do I change where a new tab opens?

When I used to open a new tab, it would be a blank page. Now, a new tab opens to the AVG Secure Search page. How can I change it back or change it to, say, the Google search page? Thx.

To change the option in AVG, see second section, "AVG search on newly opened Firefox tabs", of the following page:
I am not an AVG user, therefore I do not know what options are offered in the above. After setting the above to "None" or similar option, if offered, you can install the following and set the options to load whatever page you want to open in a new tab (Add-ons > Extensions > New TabURL > Options):
*New TabURL --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
*New TabURL home page --> http://www.sogame.cat/newtaburl/

• When we connect to the internet or visit a new web page, a new tab opens and an alert pops up as follows: "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded"

When we start the internet or navigate to a new page, a new tab opens with the following alert: "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded." We "x" out of it, but a new tab, with the same alert appears. The problem occurs again when we try to navigate to another web page. A real nuisance. We've scanned the computer but found nothing but Adware cookies.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• When clicking CTRL+Link my new tab opens in the background window, instead of the foreground window I'm using. Is there a way to make this work the way it used to, where the new tab always opens in whatever window I was currently using?

I use a web based software for work. I go to a web page listing all employees as links (Window A). When I click an employee link a new window opens (Window B). Window B contains links, i.e. Add Client, Change Address, Change Phone Number, Change Name, Upload Photo, etc... When I hold CTRL and left click the links in Window B, the new tab opens in Window A. I don't understand why this has changed, as I've been using this method to open new tabs in my current window in both of the previous versions of Firefox.

That didn't work, but thank you very much for the offer of help. I had already tried that option.
To give you an example of what I'm speaking, I found this page that recreates the scenario.
1. Goto http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm
2. Click the GO in the center of the box on their page (This creates a pop-up window with links to other programming pages)
3. CTRL+left click any of those links. The page opens in the background/original window, not the pop up window where you are currently working. And, with your solution takes me back to that window and the new tab.

• Firefox 8 puts new tabs opened from links in another tab at the end of the tab list, NOT next to the tab it came from like in V3.6. I want it next to the tab it came from. How do I get it to do this?

Question as stated, sums it up. When I click the mousewheel on a link in a tab I want a new tab open with that link and I want it next to the tab I clicked the link in just like Firefox V3.6 did. Firefox 8 is always opening the new tab at the end of the list and boy is this annoying!
Please tell me how to fix this.

type in the address bar about:config
then press the button i'l be careful i promise
then type in the bar browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
then Right-click click on it, and select Toggle, and you see changing the value from True to False.
exit firefox and restart.
thank you

• New tabs opening when clicking a link

I have a MacBook Pro running OS X
As of lately every time I am using safari and click on a link (i.e to get to the next page in a trademe search) a new tab opens up like a pop up. Normally it is some kind of advertisement. This just keeps happening and I can't figure out how to stop it happening. Sometimes it will open a whole new window but 90% of the time it is just a new tab that pops up. I can be simply looking for a recipe on Google and before I know it I have 10 tabs open of advertisements.
~feeling frustrated, please help me

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
/Library/Application Support/VSearch
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

How do I make new tabs open to my specified home page instead of blank page?

I generally like to avoid add-ons, and the second option is still an extra step - not opening tabs to the homepage, as requested (rather how to switch to your Home page after a tab opens to the blank page).
Here's a wild idea: How 'bout a setting option in Tools > Options > Tabs for "Always open new tabs to my Home page" ?

• Link in new tab opens blank and "javascript:subValue(1)" is seen in the address bar.

On a specific website, when I left click a link it opens but when trying to open the link in a new tab, the new tab opens blank and "javascript:subValue(1)" is seen in the address bar. This website hosts many, many images which I hope to download using a bulk image save addon but those images must first be in separate tabs. Opening these links in new tabs is vital to the process.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

• Clicking 'Open in new tab' opens in new window

Since the latest update (8.01), I've been unable to open links in new tabs without dragging the link up to the tab bar. Alt-clicking the link and clicking 'open in new tab' opens the link in a new window instead (The 'open in new window' works as it should). Also, middle button clicking opens in new window, even though I have the 'Open new windows in a new tab instead' selected in the tabs option menu.

And now it's started working fine...odd.
