New tab overrides old

Hi,
I have a two year old MacBook (Mac OS X (10.5.8)) and I use Safari for the internet. It has worked perfectly until a month ago, when all of a sudden the opening of new tabs became a problem. I used to be able to open a new tab and browse freely in this while the old tabs stayed untouched. This way I could have several internet sites open at the same time and change between them. What happens now is that if i try to open a new tab (cmd t) it opens, but the already existing tab changes to "top sites" and quits whatever site it was on. If I then try to open a site in the new tab, nothing happens to it, but instead the required site opens in the old tab, overriding this again and loosing where I was. Can anybody help me?

Hi Robert
that's usually due to a Safari add-on. If disabling extensions via Safari-Preferences-Extensions doesn't help...
then look in the folders mentioned at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3230
perhaps particularly the input managers in both the HD & your account LIbrary.

• Opens new tab behind old tab

Every time I open a new link it opens behind the present tab. Kind of annoying and I can't seem to fix it
Thanks

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing: a new tab in the same window, or a new tab in a completely separate new window?
If it's a new tab in the same window, there is an option that might help:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
Try checking the box for "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately".
If you use the Tab Mix Plus extension or the Tab Utilities extension, you may need to check their settings, too.
If it's a tab in a completely new window, maybe it's the Flash protected mode problem? This thread has the details on that, and known workarounds: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/955659 Opening New Windows and Shockwave Flash].

• Do new sites override old sites?

My computer crashed, and I lost all of my web files. I have recreated a small business website, but I have no plans on recreating several photo albums that are still up and active.
If I publish my recreated iWeb files, will they override all of the current files that are published (and I do not have the original files for)?
THANKS!

I am uploading with iWeb. I suppose it goes on my MobileMe account, but then a couple of the sites have their own domains that are pointed to my sites.
Do you know if they get overrided? Is it an all or nothing thing? Or will it just update the appropriate files?

• How can I get my bookmarked sites to open in a new tab by clicking on them, like the old Netscape?

Every time I click on a bookmark, it overrides the current tab. How do I get it to open in a new tab? Or at least have an option like the old Netscape used to do.

Bookmarks act the same as links on a webpage. If you want to open them in a new tab either right-click and 'open in a new tab' or middle-click (ie click with the scroll wheel).

• When entering a new website it overrides the previous site, how can i get it to open a new tab instead

I DON'T KNOW THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM, I JUST THOUGHT THAT IF THERE IS A WAY TO OPEN A NEW TAB EACH TIME YOU ENTER A NEW WEBSITE WITHOUT OVERRIDING THE PREVIOUS ONE. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO REMEMBER TO ENTER THE PLUS SIGN EACH TIME YOU WANT TO OPEN A NEW WEBSITE.

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.
For links that do not specify a target use a middle-click or hold down Ctrl and left-click the link or use the right-click context menu to open the link in a new tab or window.
Left-click a JavaScript link to avoid getting a blank tab.

• Just upgrade to 33.1.1, terrible! new tab position not configurable, no response for clicking a link, how can I have the old version? Thanks!

Just upgrade to 33.1.1, terrible! new tab position not configurable, no response for clicking a link, not going to the website by click "enter", "space" keyboard can not be the page down anymore, always die....
how can I have the old version?
Thanks!

Just to clarify, let's say you have tab 1 Google results and tab 2 something else. When you Ctrl+click a link in tab 1, it opens between tab 1 and tab 2 instead of at the end? Here's how you switch that:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''tabs''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent''' preference to switch it from true to false.
You can switch back to an earlier tab and test. Success?

• When I open a new tab it shows the old ones that I have closed how do i fix this

when i am in one website & I control t to open a new tab & I hit the home button all my old tabs reopen how do I fix this so I dont keep closing out unnecessary tabs also the tabs are there each time i open firefox

A new tab opens by default as a blank tab (about:blank).
If that isn't the case then an extension has changed that behavior.

• Old bookmarks duplicated several times in new tab. iPad running slow

Too
many old bookmarks are duplicated in new tab. How do I remove. iPad runs very slow

Hi mmglr,
If I understand you correctly, when you open a new tab in Safari on your iPad, it actually opens up a bunch of tabs with content from your bookmarks, is that right?
You may want to try a couple of things to troubleshoot.
First, I would try restarting the iPad -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPad as a new device -

• I have my home page set up fine, but when i open a new tab it loads "delta serach" instead of the old layout of my most visited pages.

something has reset my new tab page to delta search, i want the original layout back with the page thumbnails of most visited pages that i had before. please help. very annoyed at delta for taking liberties in my browser settings.

Type about:config in URL
*Search browser.startup.homepage and change the value to google.com
*Search browser.newtab.url and change the value to about:newtab
*Uninstall the delta search from Extension/Toolbar
In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.

• Firefox4 "Open Link in new Tab" and "Open Link in new Windows" switch back to the old FF3 version

Am I the only one finding this annoying?
I want to know how to switch "open link in new tab" and "open link in new Windows" like it was in Firefox 3.
If you mousehover on a link and press the right mousebutton.

Sara, I started having the same problem yesterday. In my case I was able to remedy it by disabling FasterFox 3.9.81. If you don't have that installed, I would recommend turning off your extensions (one by one), restarting firefox, and testing until you find the offender. Hope that helps!

• Is there a way to revert back to the old 'New Tab' button?

I would like to be able to place a 'New Tab' button right next to (or on) the current active tab like previous versions allowed.
I believe even pre-RC versions of Firefox 4.0 did this, now I can't do this after updating to the latest version.
(admittedly this was awhile ago now, but I figured I would try to figure it out)

That new tab button should appear immediately to the right of the last tab.
You can try to use Restore Default set in the Customize window to see if that brings back that button in the default location.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

• When i highlight a word, right click and select "search google for "x"" how do i not get directly into the new tab? i want to stay in the old tab

i want to stay in the current tab and go to the new ones by myself later.

* '''Ctrl+C''' to copy selected text to clipboard.
* '''Ctrl+T''' to open a new tab.
* If focus is not automatically set on the address bar, press '''Alt+D to''' set focus on the address bar OR '''Ctrl+E''' to set focus to the search box.
* '''Ctrl+V''' to paste text from the clipboard.
* Smack '''ENTER''' to jump right into a google search if your browser is configured to search through google from those boxes (which it probably is by default).
* '''Ctrl+Shift+Tab''' to jump backwards through tabs.
Much, much, much quicker then going through the rigmarole point-click-point-click.

• Safari new tab flicker of old image residue

Can anyone explain why, when i first open safari and double click to open a new tab, just before the Top Sites page loads i get a flicker of a partly scrambled image? This image is usually, but not always, of a site or screen that has just previously been open in the display, sometimes from a webpage, sometimes from a window such as system preferences. Occasionally the scrambled image is nothing that has been on my screen in the last 24hrs, as far as i can remember. This isn't a problem, per se, but a funny quirk that makes me wonder if there is something amiss with my Macbook. How is this image left hanging around to then briefly re-appear in a scrambled format?

Hello folks,
I have had this problem for a while now. The problem ONLY occurs with Safari if I open a new tab and have preferences set to top sites. What I see when I open a new tab is pixelization and/or flickering. I thought it was hardware issue so I called Apple. We ran HW tests and they told me it was not. They advised it was likely a plugin or software issue. We re-installed Snow Leopard (maintaing all data) and that did not help. We did tons of other things, all to no avail. Apple suggested I do a WIPE and start over. They also suggested I do NOT reimage from my time machine backup as to not bring back whatever plugin or SW
So I finally got around to that this weekend. I am on an essentially virgin system. The only two apps I installed are Handbrake and Skype. I have not done any flash update, plugins or anything else. The problem still exists
I have an excellent and short video capture that shows this but not sure how I can upload that here.
I guess from reading this post that I should go to Lion - which is on my list of things to do but need to check on compatibility of some SW/HW first.
OH btw, some specifics: Imac 27" Snow Leopard, 12GB Ram, all SW is up to date
Just thought I would throw this out there...

• Old Firefox new tab had a snazzy list of websites i chose, but I can't find that option again.

Ok so it was just a nice looking background and had websites I chose displayed. It had icons for each website and i really want that back but I cant find anything about it. Can anyone help?

The built-in Firefox "new tab page" doesn't have a special background, so you may have been using an add-on for that.
To check the internal setting:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter the desired value:
* ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
* ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
* ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
* ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and... does it look like you want?
You can check on whether any "speed dial" extensions have become disabled on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column click Extensions. Then on the right side scroll down and check for any disabled extensions at the bottom of the list.
