New tab page rows and columns problem

Hi.
After a recent update and making new tab links smaller, I've decided to increase number of rows and columns, put my most frequently used bookmarks in there and close bookmarks toolbar to improve visibility. Since yesterday (March 26 2014.) I lost my bottom row, although there is enough space on my screen. In about:config newtab section, it still says I'm having 6 columns and 5 rows, but I only get 4 rows when I open new tab. What might be the problem, and why did you make those newtab links smaller anyway?

Hello,
You're using Nightly, which is a highly experimental version of Firefox intended for testing. In the latest version, modifying the ''browser.newtabpage.columns'' and ''browser.newtabpage.rows'' preferences in about:config behaves as you describe (in my case, I actually only get 3 rows, presumably because of higher DPI settings). This issue has already been reported.

• Custom new tab page, tiles and redundant searchbar

I have used the custom new tab add-on for a long time. 4x4 tiles, no search bar, custom background... It was great. A million times better than the standard crap they give you. Since the last update I'm stuck with the standard new-tab page, which I hate. Plus, Google is the ONLY standard search machine available. Yes, you can use others, but not as standard. Bye bye privacy.
Let me sum up the only 2 reasons I used firefox in the first place:
1. The ability to NOT use big brother's services (Google)
2. The CUSTOMIZABLE new-tab page (4x4 tiles instead of 4x2). WITHOUT a redundant search bar.
With last update you have disabled these both. No 4x4 tiles, redundant search bar (there are now 3 search bars instead of 2. 3 times better searching eh?)... I'm done with Firefox. I don't even know why I bothered to take the time to write this.
Mozilla you suck. Every time there's good community driven thing going on, you idiots ruin it.

• New tab page dissapeared and I can't toggle it back on

After updating to firefox 33.1.1 my new tabs go right to my home page, not my new tab grid. about:newtab still brings it up, but it's not set to automatically loading that page on a new tab. All the settings I've fiddled with in options do nothing.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

• FF 13 New Tab Page

I've set History and Cache to clear on exit.
Can I still have 'Recently closed tabs' displayed on the New Tab Page?
Thank you.

hello, the new tab page in firefox 13 is showing the 9 most visited pages - in case you're clearing all history information on exit, this information will not be available (or just repopulated during a session) and the new feature won't be of much use.
however, you can customize the new tab page - drag and drop bookmarks and pages from the history onto the new tab page and pin them to add custom entries...

• Is there a way to create multiple New Tabs pages and name them?

This feature is great but I would like to be able to create multiple new tabs pages and label them. This would be more useful than tabs groups that all load at once.

No that is (currently) not possible.
It will be possible in future Firefox version to specify the number of rows and columns.

• How can I set the New Tab Page so that it only shows my Bookmarks (Like chrome) and not the history ?

Hello, I've recently installed Firefox on my new PC after giving Chrome yet another chance (I've had bad experiences with it) and after seeing crashes everywhere I just gave up. I'm a long-time Firefox user but I've never been able to figure out how to prevent the New Tab Page from showing the Browser's History.
Is there a way to make Firefox show Bookmarks and Folders on the NTP instead ? Also, is there a way to make the Bookmarks bar show on the New Tab Page ONLY ?

The about:newtab page shows pages that you have visited. So if you visit a page by clicking a bookmark then that bookmark will become a history item and will thus appear in one of the tiles on the about:newtab page.
If you want then you can customize the tiles and drag bookmark (and history) items in a specific tile to pin that web page to that tile.
You set the number of rows and columns that appear on the about:newtab page by modifying these prefs on the about:config page via a double-click.

You can change a preference to make tabs open
# at the end of all open tabs
# immediately after the current tab.
See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config
*Type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and press the Enter key.
*If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful).
*Filter = browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
*Look at the "Value" column ('''false'''=open at end, '''true'''=open after current tab); Value = true is the default.
*Double-click that preference to toggle the value from true to false, or false to true
*Restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)

• The pinned and unpinned pages on the "new tab" page are glitchy as hell.

When I try to move ANY of the pinned of unpinned pages on the "new tab" page, all of them go off their grid and move spastically as I try to pin a page to a certain spot. It's really hard to describe. I already opened and closed firefox, but that didn't solve the problem. Hell, I even updated Firefox with the most recent update, but it's still doing it. I managed to get my tabs where I want them, but if I want to add another it's going to be nearly impossible because the bottom line of the grid is completely beyond reach.

Hi KRenee, Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window as follows:
#* Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. '''Uncheck''' this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Thank you.

• New tab page was fine for MONTHS, had an image I uploaded. Today, I got a 'safe' mode whatever, and my image is gone. How do I restore it, so my image comes up?

I had set up my new tab page with an image I uploaded. It worked fine for months, if not years.
Today, I got a 'crash' that asked me to start Firefox in 'safe' mode or 'restore'. I chose 'restore'.
Thereupon, my image was gone from my new tab page. I cannot find how to restore it, and add ons that supposedly allow me to add my own image are not helpful. At least, I cannot figure them out.
Can you provide help on a computer for dummies level?

Sounds that you have reset Firefox and created a new profile.
You can try to create a new profile or reset Firefox.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems
When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.
You can try to restore the prefs.js file and copy this file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop shortcut to the current Firefox program folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

• New tab page shows tiled and poorly sized thumbnails

Just upgraded from 12 to 13, new tab page looks awful. Most of the images show tiled versions of the webpages, with about 1.8 copies of each page horizontally and 1.5 vertically in each image.

Hiya! First Off: I Love Your Work! Firefox is great and thank you for giving it to us :)
I'm having the same problem listed above. Disabling hardware accelaration did not fix it. I'm on Firefox 13, Linux - Beefy Miracle. I'm including a screenshot.
Any suggestions?
oh, quick side note: Window's users get a cool orange Firefox badge to the left of the tabs... linux users just get a plain text Firefox link. Can't wait to get the attractive aesthetics made available to windows' users!

• My new tab page is missing and now when I type about:newtab in the Awesome bar I get a page called about:about. Help!!

I use to have the grid of pinned webpages whenever I clicked on the X of a new tab page. Now it's gone. I figured out if I typed about:newtab in the Awesome bar it would restore the page, but not all the time. Now when I type about:newtab in the Awesome bar I get a page called about:about...and I don't want that. How can I get my pinned websites back on my New tab page?

• In Firefox v33, new tab page thumbnails are blurry and over-sized

Since updating to Firefox v33, my new tab page thumbnails are blurry. They are also over-sized compared to what they were before the update.

Firefox automatically adjusts the number of columns that fit on the about:newtab page if you adjust the width of the Firefox window or zoom the page in or out and no longer resizes the thumbnails.
The current release doesn't resize the thumbnails, but instead reduces the number of tiles to fit the current screen width, so you may not see the number of columns that is specified via the browser.newtabpage.columns pref.
Zoom out the about:newtab page to see more tiles.
Make sure that you have only one tab with the about:newtab page open.

• I want to change the new tab page - it currently is a list of recent site - i share the computer and find this annoying. would like all tab pages to be same as start page

i want my new tab pages to look the same as my starter page.

Firefox by default uses a blank page for a new tab. Something you installed has changed that action to what you are complaining about. You need to figure out which add-on made that change and disable that add-on or change the preference in that add-on.

• The new tab page is showing Gmail inbox pages, meaning anyone can start a new tab and get access to my email. How do I stop this?

When I open a new tab, within the pages brought up is my gmail inbox. This mean anyone can have access to my inbox without logging in, without my password. How do I restrict this access?

If you log out of Gmail, then clicking the thumbnail should take you to a login page. If you don't log out, then anyone can access your email just by typing gmail.com in the URL bar. But you're right that the picture does create a temptation to click...
You can set the new tab page back to blank if you prefer. However, please note that the page thumbnails are stored in the browser cache, so you also need to clear your cache to flush out existing thumbnails if you don't want anyone to be able to see them.
