New ThinkPad Keyboards from a Blind User's Perspective

Hi all,
I’m posting this on Lenovo community as well as the ThinkPad board to generate maximum visibility, so apologies in advance for double posting.
Generally a lurker on these forums, I thought that I should speak out because this is important to people like me.
I’m a blind ThinkPad user from the time of IBM. Blind PC/ Mac users rely on screen readers to operate. A screen reader is a piece of software that reads out loud textual and tagged graphical elements present on the screen. Due to certain technological barriers, keyboards have been the primary input device for blind screen reader users instead of a mouse. In fact that is why companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google have built-in keyboard shortcuts in the form of key combinations and key sequences in their respective apps. Accessibility is a big issue when it comes to purchasing/ adopting software by governments in some countries. There is a good reason for that too. I can use Excel, R, Python, PowerPoint, and other apps just as well as the next person, but I’m heavily discriminated against in my field.
The point of all this rambling is that keyboards are essential for productive blind people, which is why I loved ThinkPad’s.
As I started checking out ThinkPad reviews for my next upgrade, I was stunned to discover that some keys that are quite important to me are missing in the newer keyboards. CapsLock, Insert, and Escape are all used by screen readers to provide navigational and positional information. Thanks to these boards at least I know that the function keys can be turned on without messing in BIOS, since that’s not accessible. I can’t edit a single cell in Excel without F2!
Another point to note is that I can live with the new keyboard design since I have no other option but to adapt, so that’s not a big problem. But I and other blind workers like me can’t live without all the keys that a traditional keyboard has.
I was contemplating either the T440S or the W540, but unfortunately if the axing of keys that Lenovo considers irrelevant continues, I’ll have to start looking elsewhere.
If someone from one of the government/ educational department is reading this, you better start looking for another brand for bulk buying if you have an “equal opportunity” policy. Lenovo apparently doesn’t care to find out how its ThinkPads are being used by a diverse set of people.

I see that option on the menu and there's a few addresses under there, but not every one of them. Also, I tried to import the old email and that comes in as a separate mailbox ("Import-n") but that doesn't yield any new addresses in the previous recipients collection.
Just saw the recent comment about the SQLite DB which uses the phrase "not easily" as opposed to "impossible." I'm not saying I'm a SQL ninja, but I know my way around DBs. Just curious if there are some pointers you can provide or is really a rathole I should stay out of?
thanks!

Restore the iPad to out of the box configuration. This will erase all contents/settings on the iPad. Then set up using your ID and email info.

  • Create new BPS documents from "COPY DOCUMENTS" user exit.

    Hi Gerd,
thank you so much for your reply.
I'm continuing other thread here. (Copy "document icon" to new sheet from "SEM-BPS 1" sheet)
    <b> We've a layout that doesn't use macros. </b>
We'd like to attach a document for each line that is entered on this layout. All the document attribute characteristics are included in this layout.
Document contents & technical name can be any thing.
Should I be able to do this?
This ensures that users be able to edit documents on other layouts which is crucial.
I tested this For couple of lines and I was successful.
Before I'd like to start implementing this, I appreciate your inputs on the prcoess that I follow if this is an effective way of doing?
Any concerns from the performance side?
any other hidden issues/concerns that you might be familiar with?
    1) I'm reading all document attribute characteristic values of the layout new lines from the user exit.
    2) I've created one variable for each "document attribute characteristic"
    3) I've created "COPY DOCUMENTS planning function" and included variables in the parameter group
    4) user exit in step 1 fills all variables (fills only 1 value at a time) & passes to "COPY DOCUMENTS parameter group"
    4) due to restriction of only single entry variables usage in
"COPY plannig funciton", I'm using "API_SEMBPS_FUNCTION_EXECUTE" and executing "COPY DOCUMENTS planning funciton" as many times as number of new lines
    5) if there are 6 new lines, user exit in step 1 loops 6 times & calls "API_SEMBPS_FUNCTION_EXECUTE" 6 times which inturn executes "COPY DOCUMENTS planning funciton" 6 times
Am I on the right & effective path?
    Is there any better approach?
    Appreciate your inputs

    Hi,
This is one way you can do that. The bad side of your implementation is that the planning function is called 6 times. It would be better to copy the coding of the planning function and modify it in such a way that you can do all of the steps in one go. If the performance is all right I would still leave it the way it is as then you do not have to change to coding.
    Best regards,
    Gerd

  • The feel of the thinkpad keyboard...

    hi all,
i am not sure about you guys but for those that used some previous version of the thinkpad such as the t500 or in my case the w700....the keyboard back then was perfect. the sound of the keys was soft and the force feedback of the keys were equal on each key and were not "clicky". For some reason, the new thinkpad keyboard such as the t510 has a different feel and it isnt for the better in my opinion. anybody else feel that these new thinkpad's keyboards are different? as for the engineers, were there some design changes with the newer models of the thinkpad in the keyboard which made them cheaper? because i think they feel cheaper now
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My t520 is my first lenovo/thinkpad product.
I was previously using a $4,000 Sony vaio laptop that I won at a sweepstakes and I'm loving my Thinkpad and the build quality is much better, of course I have no experience with older models but I'm extremely satisfied with my t520.
The keyboard to me feels excellent too.

  • New Apple Keyboard Problems

I am not able to use the Dashboard and Exposé buttons on the new Apple Keyboard. I cannot assign them in the preferences nor were they set up initially. I have installed the latest keyboard update (Version 1.1) but it still does not work.
My Setup: An ACD 20" is attached to the PowerBook. The lid is closed.

Alright! I finally got my NEW aluminum keyboard from my local Apple Store (I made sure to call in before going... not that it's a journey to get there, but don't want to waste time if they don't have it) and just installed it with my PowerMac G4 Dual FW 800 model.
I'm typing on it right now instead of my PowerBook.
ALL functions are working for me. What I did was to install the keyboard FIRST by plugging it in to the computer's USB port.
Then I went to Apple's download/support site to get the keyboard update software 1.1...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
...and then restarted my PowerMac. Voila! (It didn't work. It was connected to a USB 2.0 PCI card, so I unplugged it from there to the built-in USB 1.1 port on the PowerMac and then it worked. I put it back to the USB 2.0 card's ports and it worked after that).
F1 and F2 don't work for brightness and contrast modes because I am now using an Envision 17" LCD dual monitor setup (my 17" Studio Display is being used by an older PowerMac G4 533 MHz). I think if it was an Apple LCD display--Studio (plastic) or Cinema (aluminum) versions--it would recognize it. The F3 for Expose and F4 for Dashboard work fine. I haven't tried the DVD player controls for F7 through F9. F10 through F12 work great for sound, even if I have non-Apple external speakers. (Makes me wonder about the monitor controls). Eject key works too. And the REAL eject key, not the F12 hold key down to eject.
So, I'm sorry that you're all having problems. I'd connect it to my PowerBook, but because I'm a very meticulous and exacting person, I don't want to disconnect anything because I have it setup where the wires are hidden and it's all perfect right now.
But as I said in an earlier posting, when I went down to my Apple Store and tried the new keyboards out that were connected to the NEW iMacs, those keyboard functions didn't work!! Irony, huh?
Mine purrs like a Leopard... aha!!
(I love the quiet sound and less exacting pressure needed to type as opposed to my previous black Apple Pro Keyboard. I would never have bought this new flat aluminum keyboard if it didn't match my Envision silver monitors).
By the way, I have a Mighty Mouse (wired version) connected to it too. And yes, the aluminum keyboard I bought was the wired version as well.

$49 well spent!! I don't like the wireless version. Looks kind of odd shaped with the extra space on top (for the batteries). They didn't have those in stock anyway.

Also, I haven't touched anything in System Preferences. Everything worked after FIRST, connect the keyboard, SECOND, install the software update, THIRD, restart (had to unplug it from PCI USB 2.0 slot to USB 1.1 native port, and then back to USB 2.0 port), and after login, all worked without a hitch.
I don't even want to fool around with system prefs now, since maybe that's what causes the problem (no proof there from me) when you try and tweak or customize your settings.

  • New Apple Keyboard and iMAC

Okay, not sure if I am posting in the right place but here goes. Picked up two of the new flat keyboards from the Mac Store. Hooked them up, downloaded the keyboard software, and fully restarted the system. It works great.
My problem is when, during restart, I try to hold down option to switch over into Vista. Simply, nothing happens. The system starts up in MAC OS as if Im not holding down the key at all.
What do I do? Plug in the old keyboard and sell these on Ebay lol?

I had the same thing as you (that my BT mouse & keyboard were working but then after a while they started to act up -mouse freezing on&off, keys sticking-).
In my case the 'before' and 'after' was actually running the setup on the Bootcamp Utility disk that contains all the Bootcamp drivers. There must be a rogue driver on there that messed up my system. I ended up doing a reinstall and only installing the bluetooth drivers (that are also on the same Utlity disk, but in the $WinPEDriver$ folder. This at least worked for me.
However, by doing so I did not get the handy Bootcamp utility in the lower left corner of Windows that allows me to conveniently reboot and switch from Win8 to MacOS. I am trying to figure out if I can install that utility separately without all the drivers being automatically installed as well

  • Tricks w/ new wireless keyboard

Here are the following "tricks" I have found out about the new wireless keyboard from Apple.
    1. To get Page UP and Page DOWN function => fn + UP Arrow ; fn + DOWN Arrow
    2. Forward delete => fn + delete key
    3. Power off keyboard => Press and hold power button until the green light turns off. It'll turn on first, and then a few seconds of holding the button will turn the keyboard off.
Other tricks people have discovered? Unlike with the MacBook Pro built-in keyboard, there is "Num Lock" key, so there is no built-in numeric keypad as part of the QWERTY keyboard, at least not that I have found.

    hey that was useful, thanks.
after one month my wireless keyboard batteries where empty !!!! did u experienced the same? Do u switch on/off your keyboard? I don't like the mouse when not used the device sleeps (no/low consumption)....

i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

i use migrate assistant to move files from my old pc to the new Mac , but it creates the user account. How can i delete the unwanted user account.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

I transferred data from my Macbook Pro to my Mac mini but it forced me to make a new user for my old data.  How do I transfer my music, pics, and docs from the "old" user to the new user (so that I only have one user instead of 2?)

Unless you transfer the files from Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant creates a new user with the data.
To transfer the files to your first user, you have to log on this new user, and copy all your files to /Users/Shard folder. This is a folder where you can put the files you want to share between two or more users, and all users can read and write in it.
After copying the files, go to your first user, open /Users/Shared folder, and copy the files to your user folders. If you migrated applications, you must know that they are stored in a common folder (/Applications), so you don't have to transfer them. To open /Users/Shared folder, open Go menu (in the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the folder

I use Firefox 95% of the time, and there's no problem with flash content (and I'm still at .55 - downloaded .64 last week but I haven't got round to making the change yet). At the rate they've been changing it recently it may well be out of date already .
I've been trying it in Safari, too with no problems apart from You Tube, but that's because I'm blocking Google cookies.
One thought does occur - if your Flash preferences are set to block all Local Storage, it may be that the problem site is trying to use Flash cookies (LSOs). I had this problem recently with the BBC iPlayer streaming content. Little Snitch notified an attempt to connect to a new URL - emp.bbci.co.uk.
If I disallowed it, no streaming; when I allowed the connection, it still wouldn't stream, so I did a bit of digging and came to the conclusion that it was trying to set a Flash cookie. When I unblocked, lo and behold - streaming resumed as normal.
I now have LSOs blocked in a more subtle way that lets the site think it's being set (but it ain't) and the streaming still works.
As for permissions repair - always repair from local; the permissions on the original disc will have been superceded by updates and new installations of Apple software.
DU needs to be reading the packages on the HD, not the (now out of date) install disc.
The recurring repair messages are normal and don't mean anything's wrong. As long as the final message is 'repair complete' there's no need to dwell on it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 (for Leopard and Snow Leopard - Lion no doubt has it's own set).

I have just downloaded and installed this version of IOS on my Ipad Air and it is DEAD.
    It won't start up.
When I connect my Ipad to my MacbookPro, Itunes tells me the following:
"iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes."
What now? restore? try to remove 8.0.2?

  • Mac mini will not recognize boot key sequences from new Apple keyboard

Just in case anyone else is in the same boat as me - be forewarned. My mini died on me all of a sudden last week. My initial thought was that it was a hard drive failure. It wouldn't boot up at all. I was just stuck at the grey apple, cranking gear screen.
I tried the usual stuff at first. Tried to boot from CD. Booting from an external FireWire drive. Nothing worked. Reset SMC, etc. Nothing worked.
So I brought in the machine to my local Apple store and talked to the Genius. He said I had a bad logic board, and that replacing it would cost almost as much as the computer. I contemplated the idea, but couldn't afford to pay for this.
So, instead, I just went without my mini for a couple of days - opting to use my Macbook instead. Then I decided that maybe it was the keyboard that was the issue. And yes, indeed, that was the problem. Using any other keyboard (even non-Apple keyboards) allowed me to boot from external devices, which then allowed me to identify that the issue was, in fact, a bad hard drive.
Long story short. 1) This issue needs to be remedied by Apple in some way, shape, or form. There must be others with a potential dying hard drive in the waiting with new aluminum keyboards. 2) The Genius should have known about this issue as well.

Any workarounds apart from the obvious? (I'd hate to stop using my otherwise awesome keyboard).
The new aluminium keyboard is not fully compatible with the Mac mini. It works perfectly well in general use, except that it cannot be used with modifier keys at startup for such things as booting into safe mode, to access the boot loader screen or to boot to the optical drive.
While this is a bizarre issue which it is hard to understand has not been resolved, it has been a long standing issue and well reported here. The workaround is the obvious one, to use almost any other USB-connected keyboard if the system needs to be booted with a modifier key. There's no need to stop using your aluminium keyboard if you like it - just not for situations where you need to modify the boot process.

    captureplayer,playbackplayer to null

    Any ideas will be helpful

I assume you are wanting to hear the audio as you are importing and not that you have no audio once it is imported.
imovie 08 doesn't play audio while importing. While you are using tape (that imports in real time) imovie now imports from a variety of different types of camera such as AVCHD (which isn't imported at real time. Therefore it is no longer logical to playback audio on import.
