New tiered data plans suck

I just wanted to vent my feelings about this ridiculous change.  I filed a complaint with the FCC as well and urging any VZW users I know to do the same.  This has got to stop at some point and I've about taken all the crap I can from big business.
I feel I need to mention that I average way less than 1GB of usage per month.  The problems with your "tiered" data are that:
It doesn't cost us any less and there aren't any cheaper options.  In fact, it's a price increase in disguise.  It's hard to swallow when the price of bandwidth and transport costs continue to decline yet we are shafted with price increases.
If you are going to charge me for 2GB of data then give me my 2GB.  If I only use 1GB then roll the other 1GB over.  After all, I did pay for that bandwidth.  Your 2GB tier over the course of a year is 24GB.  If I average just 12GB but went over the 2GB for just one month, I will get hit with an overage charge.  I am just not sure how this is fair to me as a consumer and how anyone can even justifty this.
If you want to do away with "unlimited" plans then just charge for what is actually used.  But then, of course, I'll only be paying for the data that I use and not donating money for the data I don't use.  I don't understand why Verizon thinks it's OK to rip off customers like that.
I used to have nothing but praise for "Big Red".  Lately though, I've had nothing good to say.  You guys have done away with the New Every 2 loyalty perks, introduced garbage tiered data plans that aren't even competive and various other things.  The excuse to justify all of this is something along the lines of "Everyone else is doing it".  Assuming that point is valid (I don't believe it is), you should leave well enough alone to keep yourselves distinguished from everyone else.  Instead you're lowering yourselves to the same subpar standard as the others.

If the cost per MB drops by 50%, but you then use a 5 times as much data, the total cost of the data has in fact increased 2 and a half times. I'm not saying this is the actual decrease in cost per MB or the actual increase in the amount of data for the average user, but ALL reports for data usage have said they are increasing at the same time that the cost per MB is decreasing. This is just to show that the TOTAL cost of the data isn't necessarily decreasing.

Especially when the company that DOES give you roll-over minutes DOES NOT give you roll-over data.

There are 3 levels on data plans. With the minute plans there are 3 levels and an additional level for unlimited.

  • Has anyone here gotten any notification from VZW that tiered data plans are coming on July 7?

I have heard on the internet, as well as my TV local newscast, but not once have I gotten an email, text, phone call or postcard in the mail that there will be tiered data plans beginning 7/7/11. I am not one to complain about vzw, but I have to say something here; this is to say the least pi** poor customer service. Here we are t minus 6 days and counting, and I haven't heard one peep from VZW. I hate to think that they are trying to catch people off guard with tiered data, but their silence just reinforces that fact.

That actually makes a lot of sense!

  • Got new ipad; data plan transferred to new SIM; what to do with old SIM?

Hi, I bought a "new iPad" and just set it up as a restore of my old iPad. It seems to have automagically transferred the data plan from my old sim to the new sim that was already in the iPad. The old SIM isn't working any more, I tested it.
I am giving my old iPad (iPad 2) to a friend, I'm wondering if I should give them the old SIM card as well, it seems like it's ready to be set up as a new account.
When I put the old sim card in the new iPad, it says there's no data left on it and asks if I want to set up an account.
There was also a note that you could transfer an old plan to this SIM just by logging in to the account for the other SIM, so I think this automatically happened with the new iPad.
Should I give my friend the old SIM as well as let them use that to set up a new account, or should I trash or store it and ask them to go to AT&T store to get a new sim?
    Thanks

Your friend can use the old SIM card.

  • Can I switch to the new 150MB Data Plan?

I currently have the Family Plan 700 min package. I have 2 phones. I have a Samsung Omnia which has the $29.99 unlimited MB package.
I also have a Samsung Rogue with the $9.99  25MB package.
On the Rogue, is there any way I can swtich to the new $15 150MB package? I no longer see it listed in the data plans on Verizon's website, but I am unable to switch to the new plan through my account. It is either my current plan, or the unlimited plan.
Will I ever be able to switch?
    Thanks!

Yes you can switch. You may have to call in though,

has my plan already been changed and can I just download the VZ Nav and see no new charges??
also are there any stock quote apps available for my phone?
    thank you

Thank you to the community for your responses.

No you don't need to go to the store. You can change you plan online at www.verizonwireless.com Did you get your data plan changed? If not I would be glad to help. There are several stock applications available for our devices

  • Any change in tiered data plans in near future ?

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking forward to getting an android phone and my data usage limits are quite limited. I was wondering if verizon will compete with ATT on the data plans structure.
No matter what is being said on 200 MB not enough on a data plan, one can find many posts where people want to have lower limit data plans to afford them. Since Verizon and ATT have always been competitive in their plans and costs, is there a possibilty that Verizon will bring $15 - 200 MB Data plan to compete with ATT in order to may be retain or add more customers in that class. That way you can still have the customers who are looking to switch from basic calling plans to smartphones & then there is always the bigger cap plans who thinks 200MB is not enough.
I like verizon's network & coverage but ATT's pricing is quite attactive. It would be ironic to switch to ATT to later find the same plan on verizon.
    Thanks,

VZW tried this last year. It was a major flop in that those who did choose the lower limited plan, were screaming on here wanting their bill credited for their overages.
In short, VZW listened, they offered, subs did not like it and VZW pulled it. Yet the few left who have it are grandfathered.

  • I have a mifi 2200 that runs 3g. My data plan is unlimited. I've had the plan for years. The problem is my device is damaged and wont charge correctly. I wanted to just outright buy a newer device to replace it with but verizon tells me I cant do that bec

If you purchase any of the 4G LTE capable mobile broadband device (USB modem, mifi, Jetpack, etc), you will be forced to change your data plan to a tiered data plan. The unlimited mobile broadband data was not allowed to be grandfathered in when activating a 4G LTE device. If you really want to keep that plan for the time being, you have to purchase another Mifi2200 from a third party site/seller.

  • Incorrect Data Overage Charges on my wife's phone after forced to tiered data

My billing cycle starts on the 1st of the month.  I upgraded my wife's phone from a Droid X to an iPhone 4S on 7/2.  I was told at that time that she would lose her unlimited data and be placed on a 2gb tiered data plan at the same price.  Fine for her since she has never gone near 2gb in several years of smart phone use.  I never set up wifi on her old phone since she had unlimited data and it wasn't a concern for me.  Once getting switched to the new plan I set up wifi so when she is at work or at home she is automatically connected to wifi for her data usage.  Looking at the usage report on verizon's bill for her old phone she used 1071mb for June which was actually a high usage month for her but still nowhere near 2048mb (2gb).  Her first month on her new data plan she used 795mb according to the Data Usage Report (which they conveniently don't give a total for) which I exported to Excel and added the column.  Then for August's bill the usage report for her phone totals 440mb.  On the August bill they show an "Unbilled Usage from Previous Months" bill for $10 on top of the $30 we pay for the 2gb Data Plan
    July Data
    August Data
I like how they show an exact usage on my phone which is still on an Unlimted Data Plan but her's which is on a Tiered Data Plan they just round up conveniently to the next GB.  Even if you add up there Unbilled and Current Usage it only adds up to 2048mb which is the limit.  So she did not exceed it!
I called in and complained about the bill and the first CSR was trying to hand me off to a Tech Support saying the charges are accurate.
I told her this is a Billing issue not a Tech issue and I would like to talk to a Supervisor.  After several minutes of arguing about the charges with the Supervisor he said he could credit the $10 back to me since he didn't want to continue arguing with me.  I told him I will just be in the same boat next month and having to dispute the false charges all over again burning more of my time.  I told him I would like to cancel my NFL Mobile on my phone at this time since my bill is so high and we got to talking about football which calmed both of us down.  Then I pleaded my case again about the bill which he eventually could see the issue and agreed that there is some sort of billing issue going on.
Just wanted to put this up so that if someone else is in a similar situation that they know this is not ok and others are being billed in-accurately as well.
I have attached the spreadsheets straight from Verizon's site so you can tally them up for yourself as well and see that my wife only used 795mb of her allowed 2048mb (2gb) plan and was being charged overage charges. This is a pretty good gimmick since if you do this to even a couple 100k customers it would add up quickly to millions of dollars...
I am completely fed up with Verizon now after being with them for 15+ years, I was not happy about the non-grandfathering anymore of unlimited data and now being wrongfully billed for data overage charges when she didn't go over her allowed usage.
I am thinking of making a FCC and BBB complaint to see if I can get out of my contract with them.

For someone who spends soo much time on this forum I would expect you to know more about what you are talking about
My wife's wifi radio is always on and her phone DOES automatically connect to our wifi and her work wifi as soon as she is near it.  I can videotape it if you need more proof.(don't understand your point anyways as even according to Verizon's usage report she did not come near 2GB of data)
If you read my very first sentence I state that my billing cycle starts on the 1st of the month and the phone was purchased on the 2nd (don't understand your point anyways)
I state in my original post that Verizon rounds up the data on her phone to the nearest GB instead of giving an exact amount used on the bill (so thank you for pointing out the obvious)
Point being, she used 440mb  and we were charged data overage charges of $10 and I am sure that this is not an isolated incident.

  • I dont want to lose my Unlimited data plan :(

I been a VZN customer going on five years now, probably nothing compared to some of the other customers on here. I currently own a iPhone 4, my plan that i have is a 900min, unlimited data and text. I know since back in June, Verizon was ending the unlimited data plan and I'm pretty upset with that, which I am sure a lot of you are as well. I been thinking of what i can do besides buying a used 4G phone or paying full retail. I dont have a dummy phone or another line to upgrade, i have called VZN of different matters including my plan, apparently the new plans wouldnt be good fit for me in the sense of the tiered data plans, last month i used 10.5GB, I was like holy hell, i couldn't believe it haha. So I am stuck and i want a new 4G phone but i dont want to give up my unlimited data plan, believe or not i have read some articles online about how customers have been able to keep their unlimited data plan after June and upgrade to a new phone, i mentioned this to the Rep. and they mentioned that YES in some Super RARE occasions they have seen customers keep there old plans with new phones but no clue on how.
So if there are any Reps reading this and can help me, Please respond or anybody have some thoughts.

Some people are adding lines to their account and moving the new phone to the unlimited line, then placing a basic phone on the new line.
To me that's silly. Ok it's $9.99 for the 2nd line. I my area with the taxes and fees, it's just under $14 per month. Basically $165 a year to get a phone at a discount. So if one keeps the phone 20 months did one save anything vs just paying full price upfront? Even if one saved as it worth all that hassle?

  • Shared data plans not available when upgrading to iphone5

Last night I upgraded two 3G smartphone and a basic phone to iphone5's for all three of us.  Currently on shared unlimited data/text and 1400 min. shared voice.  The ordering process would not allow me to select the new tiered shared data plans.  It only made individual data plans available and these were combined with aspects of the old plan ($10/month access fee, 1400 shared minutes, etc.).  My chat with customer rep "Sunny" was inconclusive as he/she only stated that I couldn't order new phones and the new shared data plan all at once, but would have to order the phones and then switch the data plan after phones are activated (shipping 10/26).
Anybody else gone through this frustrating process?  Should I just wait until the iphone5's show up and try to switch plans then?  Or should I sit through the 30-45 minutes customer service hold time and try to resolve this now?
    Thanks.
    Ken

Ordering online usually doesn't allow for more than one change to the account at a time. You have to complete the upgrade in one step. Then once that is finalized in the account, then you can change to the Share Everything plans.
You might be able to complete both changes at same time if you ordered through customer service via phone.

  • What are my options for a data plan + upgrade?

So my old phone (Samsung Intensity) broke today, and I'm looking to upgrade to a smartphone. I would prefer an iPhone, but really it's not that big of a deal if I get a Droid. I'm eligible for an upgrade currently. What are my options for a smartphone and a data plan? I'm looking for what's the cheapest option as far as this goes. People tell me an iPhone is free with an upgrade, and that the cost is $20 a month, but I just want to be sure.

Unless you have an old calling plan, you should be able to add a tiered data plan for your new smartphone (i.e., $30 for 2 GB).  If you switched to the Share Everything plan, your monthly cost would be $40 line access + at least $50 for 1 GB data (includes unlimited minutes/texts and mobile hotspot, although the hotspot data usage comes out of your data plan), plus, of course, taxes/fees (and insurance, if applicable).
You can check pricing for phones via your on-line MyVerizon account if you click on the Upgrade button.  If you are mainly interested in free phones (keep in mind that there's a $30 upgrade fee), there's the Nokia Lumia 822, Spectrum 2, Droid Razr M, iPhone 4, Galaxy Stellar, Marauder, Rhyme, and the Lucid.  Several of those are 3G phones.

  • Will i need to purchase data plan if i buy unactivated smartphone while on contract with a basic phone?

II have a basic phone that is still in contract with a family plan of other basic phones that is not the share everything plan. If i buy my friends unactivated smartphone (DROID X 3G) will i need to purchase a data plan?

yes, all smartphones require a data plan; you don't have to switch to the Share Everything plan unless you want to (and then all lines on your account would have to switch) ... you can add a tiered data plan (i.e., $30 for 2 GB) for your new smartphone.

  • Can anyone help me with this: my daughter lost her unlimited data plan when I used her upgrade.

My daughter lost her unlimited data plan when I used her upgrade to buy a new phone (upgrade transfer). She didn't upgrade her phone, I did. No one told us this was going to happen and the first I knew of it was when I got a letter in the mail telling me of the change. We went back to the store where we bought the new phone and they put in 2 requests for her unlimited plan to be reinstated, but both were denied. They then told us to call Customer Care, but Customer Care doesn't care. Does anyone else have any experience of this and know of any recourse we may have? Thanks for any help you can give me.

    tikibar1 wrote:
She didn't upgrade her phone, but you did by using her upgrade.  It's her contract that then gets extended, not yours.  And, unfortunately, as of last June, whenever you sign a new two-year contract, you lose your unlimited data.  You can try to reverse the upgrade and get the unlimited data restored if within 30 14 days, but since Verizon has discontinued the unlimited data plans for everyone, I'm not sure how successful you'll be.
For what it's worth, to keep unlimited data (at least for now; rumor has it that it may be completely gone next summer), you don't want to sign a new two-year contract, but pay full retail price, get the phone elsewhere (like ebay), or use an upgrade from a phone that's on a tiered data plan.
It's 14 days, tiki.  Otherwise they are out of luck.

  • AT&T recent data plans for smartphone

Not sure if there is any gotcha but recently ATT announces the new data plan for smartphone users.  With $160 per month you have
    - Unlimited voice/text
    - 4 smartphone lines
    - 10 GB data share
With the same amount of monthly I have with Verizon
    - 700 min voice
    - Unlimited text
    - 1 smartphone line with 2GB data by itself
    - 2 dumb phone lines
Not sure how Verizon is going to react with this.

The tiered data plans started on AT&T last year.

  • Does 4g phone work with grandfathered in unlimited data plan?

I am out of contract (month-to-month service) with an unlimited data plan that is grandfathered in. I don't want a new contract, because I don't want to loose my unlimited data plan, so I'm going to buy a new smartphone for full price without contract. I've done this before, by simply activating the new phone online for free. My concern is that I am using a 3g phone, and most phones are 4g, so will a 4g phone work with my current data plan?
note: It is a $29.99/month fee for unlimited data (grandfathered in before 7/7/11)

This is because Verizon has discontinued unlimited data plans UNLESS you pay full retail for your phone. If you notice, my last reply was from 1 year ago. Verizon's policy on unlimited data changed in, I believe, June of 2012 at which point unlimited was only kept if you paid full retail for a new phone and did not have to sign a new contract.
Now if you sign a new contract, you lose your unlimited data and have to choose from a tiered data plan starting at $30 for 2GB or switch to the Share Everything plan.
