New Tiger install: Very slow start up

Greetings.
I just installed my Tiger update from Panther on my dual 450 G4, 1 GB...and the computer takes about 5 minutes from boing to operational. Is that normal? Is there any way I can speed up the start up and operation? I was told that Tiger would run faster on my computer, but the opposite is true.
Thanks.

Hello again, I gave you the instructions for setting the Pram back to default. This is a harmless, non-invasive procedure. Running disk permissions I gave you instructions for. If you want to repair your hard drive it is best done with the install disk. After installing the disk, hold down the C key until the second chime and Utilities will be in your menu bar. Repair hard drive, if it comes back with a problem, keep doing it until it is repaired. There are 3rd part applications that can remove old folders, caches, previous iTune libraries etc. TinkerTool, OnyX, are both good, read about them at Apple's doownload site, with a search in the window you will find them. I use OnyX and like it. There is a good article called 52 ways to speed up your OSx, (Google it), you will find some useful information there.

  • Installing 10.5.6 made Final Cut Pro very slow start up

After installation of OSX 10.5.6 (combo) , final cut pro 6.0.4 or 6.0.5 is very slow start up the application. I did all kinds of things such : Disc permission, DiscWarrior, Techo tool, but
it is very very slow to start up. When I re-installed final cut pro, it did start up right away,
then after restart, again final cut pro starts very very slow.
    Please advice.

    Hi Yuki,
It's very important to read the information regarding these updates before you install them. If you click the Apple logo top left in your Desktop then click Software Updates, when there is a system update available, there will be a link available for you to click and it will take you to all the information you should peruse before the update. Here is info on the 10.5.6 update. Apparently there are known 3rd party software issues. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3194
First thing I would is check the disk for errors. You need your restore disk for this.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click the Verify button. If DU reports errors, click the Repair button. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
If you restart and it's still really slow booting up, you might want to UNinstall FCP. If you do, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions before and after you reinstall it.

  • New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS

    Hi,
I've installed two instances of OIF 10.1.4.0.1 in order to create a test configuration to test XASP Attribute Sharing (i.e., we are not doing any other profiles).
Both OIF instances are using a separate instance of Sun Directory Server as its User Data Store, and both are using in-memory for Transient Data Store and have no Federation Data Store. Both OIF instances were installed similarly, using the "BASIC" installation choices, and are running on separate Redhat Linux servers.
The problem that we're seeing is very slow (10+ seconds to 30+ seconds) responses, even when we try to access a static HTML test page that we've placed in the OHS htdocs directory.
We've eliminated any networking problems as possibilities by a couple of tests that we've done, including shutting down the OHS and running a small, different test web server listening on port 7777. When we do that, response time for requests from that web server is almost instantaneous.
We are also seeing the same slow response when we try to access the test HTML page from the same server itself.
We have an SR open with Oracle, but so far, we've not been able to identify what the problem might be, so I'm hoping that perhaps someone else may have encountered this problem and have a resolution.
It is really puzzling because, as I said, this is a pretty vanilla default OIF installation, and it is doubly puzzling because even getting a tiny static HTML page is taking 10+ seconds. Also, I had installed OIF 10.1.4.0.1 on a Windows machine previously, and I don't see this problem on that earlier installation.
If anyone here has any insight into this problem, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
I think I was able to temporarily eliminate this slow response problem. I think that the slow response problem is related to another problem that I posted about in the "Application Server - General" forum (see below, and Port 7200 conflict?
    Jim
======= POSTED to Application Server - General forum ============
I think that I was able to temporarily work around this problem, plus another problem that I think is related (see: New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS
What I did was to just comment out the "include" line for "dms.conf" in the Apache httpd.conf.
Doing that got rid of the "Address already in use" errors I was seeing in Apache error_log and also eliminated the slow response I was seeing from Apache/OHS (see that other post in "Identity Management" forum), BUT I am getting new errors about Apache not being able to find "htdocs/dms/Spy0".
I have the impression that dms is some kind of process monitoring system that Oracle has in 10gAS infrastructure? So, I have some questions:
    1) What's the effect of dms not working?
    2) Is it possible to just disable dms?
I hope that Oracle support can come up with a "real" fix for both problems, but in the meantime, as long as what I did doesn't break anything else besides dms, we can at least test the OIF stuff.

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
    thanks for your responce

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

Long shot: What format is the drive?

  • Very slow start when initially entering the service ticket in Web UI (2007)

We seem to encounter a very slow start when initially entering the service ticket in Web UI (2007). Once in all seems speedy enough. I don't have my access arrange for the Service marketplace (OSS notes) yet so can't check if there is a known solution, which I suspect there is. Has anyone encountered this problem and possibly resolved it?.
    Jason.

However, I was wondering whether anyone has come across any other small changes that may have a major effect. A quick-win I guess you call it. From bitter experience I know there are rarely quick wins when it comes to optimisation due to the amount of re-testing etc.
But any further advice would be welcome.

  • B210a is very slow started to print wirelessly

I recently purchased a B210a which I'm using wirelessly from my Apple iPhone, iPad, and a Mac. It takes over a minute to start printing from any of these devices. I've now connected a cable from my iMac and it is still very slow starting. Any suggestions?

Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).

  • After installing OS X Yosemite Recovery Update Version 1.0 15/04/15 Macbook pro has very slow start up

After installing the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update Version 1.0 on the 15/04/2015, my Macbook Pro is very slow at start up . I have an Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2012. i5 2.5GHz cpu 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 512GB SSD as main system drive.
Before the update as soon as I would switch it on, I would see the Apple Logo, then the screen would go to users log in. Now after update, when I switch on, I will get a blank white screen for up to 60 seconds or more before going onto the Apple logo.
Can anybody help with this, as the reason I came over to OS X was the speed of it. I might as well go back over if this Macbook Pro is going to be as slow as a Windows laptop .
Any help to get my speedy boot up back, would be grateful.

  • Brand new iMac running very slow!

I just purchased brand new iMac on January 2nd (the specifications are below).  The computer seems to be running very slow just doing normal everyday tasks. I have barely even used the computer and the only installations I've done where the ones recommended from the app store.  I saw I had an itunes update the other day and went to install, the computer sat there for 5 minutes before it did anything.  After it installed the app store still had the badge icon #1 next to it as if it never installed.  During the installation I was listening to pandora, I tried to turn down the music and it took about 45 seconds before it turned down.  I finally tried to log out of my account and it took over 2 minutes to log out.
I haven't had the opportunity to mess with anymore since yesterday.  I feel a brand new computer like this shouldn't be running this slow.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I will probably be contacting Apple Support after I get off work and maybe even exchanging the computer for a new one.
    21.5-inch: 2.7GHz
    Specifications
    2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics

If you are referring to this icon for the App Store:
the red numeral 1 is to tell you there is an update available. It may even have started to download, and been paused.
As far as your Mac's performance goes the Apple Store is the place to take it. You have paid for a one year warranty, and of course there is the option to return it within 15 days. Good luck.

  • Mavericks on brand new iMac is very slow

I have a brand new iMac with the basic configuration and the latest version of Mavericks. I use iLife, iWork, Photoshop, Office, Dropbox and Mailplane as the main programs but it is very slow. I did not restore from a Time Machine backup and installed all programs and files separately but I often get the beachball and the computer is often very slow, it also takes a while to start up. Is there any way to see what is slowing everything down?
When I look at the activity monitor there are hundreds of processes but kernel_task always seems to be using 700mb+.
Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Hi, thanks for helping. Here are the results from your program.
In response to the other poster's question the beachball happens with iMOvie, iPhoto, Mailplane and photoshop.
    Thanks..---

  • Very slow starting iMac

iMac G5 iSight (bought Nov '05), 2.1Ghz, 1.5Gb ram, 500Gb hard drive (378.83 available), nothing connected to it except keyboard and mouse (which is connected to the keyboard). Start up items: PSPWareHelper, Microsoft Database, Aspyer Game Agent Helper, iCalAlarmScheduler, iTunesHelper (I have now removed the first three).
The problem seems to be when starting up after being off overnight. The wife called me Monday lunchtime to say she had started the iMac up only to get the grey screen with the Apple logo (no little circle going round below it) and that's all she got, after a couple of minutes she tried turning it off by holding the power button for a few seconds but it wouldn't respond so she switched it off at the wall, left it a couple of minutes and then tried again, this time it started up but it took about 7 minutes before all was working OK. She then shut down as you normally would and then turned it on again and it was up and running in what we would consider a normal time scale (about a minute and a half).
The same thing happened yesterday (long start up followed by a normal start up, no sticking on the grey screen this time). I decided to start it up myself this morning to see for myself and I got the seven minute start up which just seemed to be a very slow motion version of the normal start up, once you do get the normal desktop the first thing to appear is the dock followed by the top left hand information (blue apple and finder 'tabs') then after about two minutes the hard drive icon appears followed quickly by the top right hand information. For the next few minutes everything I clicked on (email, blue apple to access the System Preferences) was followed by the spinning beach ball.
When the wife first told me about the problem I ran disk utility and repaired permissions and MacJanitor (all tasks) but neither has made any difference. My next stop is to install TechTool Deluxe that came with my AppleCare (does anyone else use this programme? is it any good) and I have just read in the latest Mac User about FSCK but I'm not sure I have the confidence at this stage.
I must say that once the iMac is up and running everything works normally.
The most recent programme I have installed is Transmit (off of the MacFormat cover disc) but that has been installed for about a week before the problem started.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone have any ideas what I should be looking into.
    Andy

"My next stop is to install TechTool Deluxe that came with my AppleCare (does anyone else use this programme? is it any good)"
Yes. However, the disc that came w/AppleCare is not compatible w/your model G5 iMac. You will need to contact AppleCare. They will refer you to a link for you to download & burn v.3.0.4

    Now regarding your other problem(s):
Sounds like you basically did a lot of troubleshooting. Have you tried running Disk Utility from the DVD?
Do you have any other 3rd party disc utilities besides TTD? If not, you may want to purchase Techtool Pro. If you do, you will be able to purchase at a DEEP DISCOUNT because you already own Deluxe.

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro - Very slow start up, very hot

    Hi All,
Looking for some help. Searched quite a few of the online forums and have not been able to resolve this issue.
A few months back, my old reliable MacBook Pro (early 2008) started behaving oddly. Have no idea why, but went to start it up one day, and it took forever to start up and get me to the login screen. Been like that ever since. Occassionally, when I finally get to the login screen, the keyboard will not function. After a few minutes though, it always works. This only happens about 5% of the time. Once I log in, everything about the computer from a performance perspective seems to be pretty normal In addition to the slow start up, however, system gets extremely hot at the top of the keyboard, near the monitor. Fans run fast almost all the time when the system is powered on, and often when it is 'asleep'. CPU Temp goes to about 170, and the fans are always between 2400 and 3500.
I took it to Apple a while back, and based on the incredibly slow start up time they believed it was a disk issue. I went ahead and purchased a 500GB internal drive and this past weekend used SuperDuper to copy the original boot disk. All went well and I now have a new internal disk. At the same time, I upgrade the RAM from 2GB to 4GB.
After all that, the system is still very slow at startup and runs as hot as it did before. I will say, it does seem to be slightly faster on the startup, but not what I had become accustomed to for the first 4 years of use.
I looked at the activity monitor and don't see any processes hogging resources.
    No anti-virus software running.
    Currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8
My battery is pretty muc shot, but I never really use the system unplugged.
    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

    Hi there
I am having a similar issue, my mac is the same age but I am getting a major heat issue.

  • New iMac running very slow

Just bought my wife the new iMac (20" 2.4GHz). Connected her old G4 Mini in firewire mode. Transferred her applications and files. Everything is working but the computer is very slow. Much slower than my version 2 macbook. It surfs so slow and Safari has locked up several times. This is on her regular websites not something new. All her apps on the mini were the PowerPC variety and not universal binaries. Could this be an issue? I had Firefox that was optimized for the G4 processor on the mini. It worked on the iMac but was slow. I just installed the latest universal binary Firefox and it is faster but the hard drive is thrashing constantly. Now it only has 1 GB of RAM (I will upgrade) but still, I am only running 1 app... Was importing from a G4 a bad idea?
    Karl

    I ACTUALLY think so!
I have the same iMac you have and it's SUPER fast! and I also have just 1GB Ram... but I'll tell you what I did...
First, I went online and got *Universal drivers* for my *Scanner, Wacom pen tablet* etc... then I got the Universal versions of *CockTail, SuperDuper, HandBreak, Stuffit, Adium, Firefox*... time consuming I know but if they were AVAILABLE for Intel... it didn't seem to be a good idea to SAVE time... just an afternoon that maybe would have cost me a couple days trying to fix future compatibility issues...
After doing that, I installed ONLY three *PPC Apps*, the ones I really need: *Photoshop CS, Flash and Dreamweaver 8*... actually my website is all in Flash, I only use Dreamweaver as a FTP program to upload my files...
Both Flash and Photoshop will run under ROSETTA... even taking lots of RAM, they still run faster than in my old iMac G5 with 2GB Ram... *duo to the Intel processor*...
At least I know that ALL DRIVERS are the original Intel... the iMac is super fast.. I just moved from ATT&T (disgusting 300 KBPS) to ComCast reaching *5 MBPS* on both the *G4 mini* and the *2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac*...
Such a great experience, the large clear screen... a fast machine and a great connection...
If I were you I'd spend a Sunday *re-installing Leopard* and looking for the *Intel version of some Apps*... you don't have to sit in front of the computer all day... you can load the installation DVD and open a beer and come back after a while and download Leopard updates (and open another beer...) cook and listen to a good music... do little by little one day!
If I have a major problem I always re-install the OS... I can't work on a sluggish machine! Better a day doing it than suffering for a LONNNNNNNNNG time!
    Cheers!
    : )

  • New build K8N Very slow

Hello my learned friends I am after some advice if possible, I have just built a new Pc for myself consisting of a K8N Sli Fi motherboard, a 3500+ Athlon64, Nvidia 7600Gt video card, I gig of Crucial DDR400 ram and a 200Gig Seagate SATA Hard drive.
The build went great and Windows XP Home flew on but the finished Pc is very slow and sticky if I try to open 2 or more programs or do more than one thing at a time it can’t seem to cope and seems slower than my old 2.8 sepron.
It also often stops at the bios post and says ‘overclocking settings have failed and returned to Default’ yet I have never overclocked it!
Another strange thing is when closing down it brings up the old fashioned (It is now safe to turn off your computer) and you have to manually press the button!
    Does anybody have any ideas?
    Sorry for the long-winded question.

It sounds to me you have some settings in bios incorrect,or not touched at all.Building my rig I had to disable some devices in bios.also some other settings needed to be adjusted. As for overclocking,it could be possible you have in bios the sergeant setting with aggressive timings enabled, this could be a default setting,I do recall from my board it started with this setting. You have to use a bios guide for setting up things right.
Btw if you don't have any IDE devices attached you should disable this feature in bios, enabling it could interfere with your sata setup.
ps.only the IDE port that's empty ofcourse, leave the one you got your dvd drive connected to enabled.Or try first with both disabled and see if you need to configure your IDE device properly.

  • Very slow start up and very slow response

    Hi guys,
    SOS
My iMac is so slow to boot or start up. It takes about an 1-2 hours. It has very slow and very delayed response when doing tasks. I'm not sure what happened.
I have tried safe mode but it has not worked. I tried the disk utility but it was saying that my DVD (possibly because it is for snow leopard)  is outdated. I think I updated to Lion.
Do you have any suggestions? I will try any other tricks. Do you recommend to back up before doing repair etc.?
    thanks in advance!!

Tried to reset the RAM but did not get through. It went to disk utility again. Tried repair but it still saying to back up and restore files. Maybe the HD has been toasted. =(...
It says: Invalid key lenght. Volume Mac HD could not be verifried completely.. then it says Error: disk utilityu can't repair close back disk out, restoere etc..
In disk utillity as well, Mac OS X base system appeared- I dont know the purpose of this. It has some files on it. Dont know whether to restore it or what?..Mac HD seems like the it's empty..
Thanks again guys...It feels like I'm in a maze..
