New Time Capsule incredibly slow internet.

I just purcahsed a new iMac 27 inch along with an Airport Time Capsule.  I connected the Airport Time Capsule without difficulty.  Once connected the internet access deregraded significantly not only for the iMac but other wireless devices in my house as well.  I disconnected the Airport TIme Capsule and reconected my Cisco router and all devices work well.  The iMac also worked when I bypassed the Airport Time Capsule and connected directly from the DSL modem to the iMac. Clearly the Airport Time Capsule creates an internet connection problem. For what I paid for these products this should not happen. What is the connection bottle neck caused by the Airport Time Capsule?
Thank you,
Donald

Can you try bridging the dsl modem and running pppoe client on the TC.. that could work better.
To confirm that the Airport TC was the problem I connected an Ethernet cable directly fromm the DSL modem to the iMac.  Worked fine and fast as ever without the TC in the circuit.  However, I cannot establish a PPPoE with the TC in the circuit.
When you plugged the iMac into the Modem.. what IP do you get on the computer? Are you using the PPPoE client in the Mac?
Just go to the network preference and check what the ethernet is.. you can do a screenshot.. as it is unlikely to be your public IP unless you are running pppoe client on the Mac.
If the Mac gets standard private IP.. eg 192.168.x.x then the modem is also a router.
That means when you place the TC into the network.. it has to be set to bridge mode.
To get the TC as the main router you need to bridge the modem and then use the pppoe client in the TC.
Try a file copy to the TC.. what speed do you get?
I do not understand the instruction.
I am trying to confirm where the issue is..
Mount the TC hard disk in finder. Select a single large file in the Mac and copy it to the TC. The file should be around 1GB .. you can use a bunch of large files if you must but a single large file is better.
Open the activity monitor and check the network speed whilst the copy is taking place.. you should get 50MB/s transfer speed. If so that proves there is nothing wrong on the LAN side. The issue is totally WAN related. If it is slow.. less than 10MB/s then you have issues also on LAN or even mainly on LAN side and we can progress from there.
For the moment.. leave the WRT610N connected to the modem..
Plug the TC into the WRT610 in bridge mode.
Set wireless in the TC off.
Plug by ethernet into the TC.. how is the Internet speed?
This will help establish if the WAN port is faulty or has issues.
Note carefully when you test by ethernet.. please turn off the wireless in the imac.. just click the wifi icon and turn it off.. to ensure all connections are made via ethernet and not via wireless. It can get messy when you have both wireless and ethernet turned on.

  • New Time Capsule interferring with internet signal

My previous setup works perfectly.  This previous setup is as follows:
older 1 TB TC connected to Bell 2Wire modem/router (2701HG-G in bridge mode)
Ethernet connection to iMac (2014 running Yosemite) works well
WIFI throughout the rest of the house works perfectly
When I swap the older TC with my new 2TB TC, the internet signal is no longer available.  Airport utility sees the Time Capsule, but indicates that there is no internet signal (the globe is amber).  The new time capsule is slowly flashing amber.  The Bell 2Wire still indicates it is receiving an internet signal (appropriate lights all green on the 2Wire).  I have rebooted everything multiple times.  IMac Network Assistant unable to assist.
So in summary, everything works until I connect the new TC.  When I disconnect it and reconnect my older TC, everything returns to normal and I have a functioning network.  How do I fix this so that I can use the new Time Capsule?

No, you have one modem.. and one router in a network.. although you can fudge and have two routers.. and suffer double NAT as a result.. you cannot whatever you do have two modem.. that is impossible. As soon as you plug a second adsl modem into the phone line the first will stop working and the second can never start.
There is a half way solution .. if the 2wire offers DMZ, (by default it does but what Bell has done to it.. who knows).. You can double NAT but all packets are passed from modem router to the TC. it is not ideal but can help the worst of the double NAT effect.
But I think it is simply better to use the TC in bridge..
There is an alternative however which I use.. see the write up here.
Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting
This changes the TC from a dumb bridge to actually intelligent handling of the network.. but no routing. It will work well in my experience.
To get the express going you need to reset it to factory and start over.

  • Time Capsule Painfully slow internet over wireless (not so over ethernet)

I dont know what it is, but when I use the TC over wireless, it is over 10 times slower than if I just stick an ethernet cable in my macbook. I get 50k/sec TOPS over wireless. I get 600-2MB/sec over the ethernet.
Im seriously using an ethernet cable right now because I cant stand it.
I have restarted the thing 50 times now. (modem too)
I have an N capable macbook.
I have time machine TURNED OFF
I have tried all different frequencies.
It is not just my macbook, but every wireless device on the system.
I had an N basestation I replaced, it was super fast.
My ethernet and airport settings are identical.
I have tried. all settings of B,G,N 2.4 and 5ghz.
I have tried interference robustness on and off.
It is not the internet going to it, and it is not the environment it is in as It is sitting in the exact same place my N base station was in.
I seriously hate this thing right now... And I am as big of an apple fan as they come.
    Please help me!

I unplugged it again and plugged it back in again... and it seems to have worked.
Why it didnt before, and how long this will last is anyones guess.
I just wish it was as reliable as my previous N base station.

  • Time capsule painfully slow wifi

New time capsule , painfully slow wifi , cisco works lightning fast so the issue is with the TC. Looked at forums and I see it's a common isssue. Any ideas that actually work?

Download the free  iStumbler  app to examine the strength of your connection.
If it's not good, look for interference with another wireless device, cordless phone, microwave oven, etc.  Turn them off temporarily;  if you find an offender, move it farther away.  See  AirPort and Bluetooth: Potential sources of wireless interference  for more.
    Try different WIFI channels.

  • Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what amI doing wrong?

Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what am I doing wrong?

It's possible the reason it seems so slow, is that a backup might be in progress - and since it's the first backup everything on the disk is something that Time Machine is backing up and is being transferred across the WiFi at the same time as you're trying to use your Internet. So you're competing with Time Machine data flying across your WiFi along with your internet stuff. So if this is indeed what is happening (look at Time Machine to see if a backup is in progress), either pause the backup to a more convienent time or live with the slowness till the backup is done this first time, and after that you probably will not notice the "competition" on your WiFi. I like to schedule the Time Machine backups to late at night rather than once an hour (the default), but that schedule should be whatever you feel most comfortable with.
There is a handy free utility called "TimeMachine Editor" that you can get from http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/ that lets you create your own customized backup schedule. You can create several schedules to fit your working conditions. I've used it for several years with never a problem. I don't have anything to do with the company - just a happy user.
    Good luck...

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • I have connected a new time capsule to a dsl modem.  It doesnt see the internet. Airport utility says: Disconnected. But it isnt. Internet tab shows PPPoE. Must I enter Account Name or Password? If so, where do I find them? If not, what do I do?

I have connected a new Time Capsule to a DSL modem using an ethernet cable . The modem is working fine and connected fine. But the Time Capsule doesnt seem to be talking to the modem.  If I click the internet Icon in Airport Utility  it shows Disconnected. If I click the Time Capsule icon and go to the internet tab it shows  Connect using PPPoE. Is that what it should be? In the box below there is place for an account name and password. DO I need to filll these out and if so what do I put there--information about the Time Capsule of informationabout the Modem? And where do I find the information.
Or am I completely on the wrong track.

Thanks. The modem is a Speedtouch ST585  v6. How do I know whether it is in adsl bridge?  Also this is a modem-***-router. Does that make a difference?
If you did not put it in bridge then it is not in bridge..
Connect a computer directly to the modem.. open the browser to either 192.168.1.254 or 10.0.0.138 (if neither of those work you will have to check the IP address your ISP has set).
BTW who is your ISP and do they allow PPPoE.. for instance most ISP in UK do not use pppoe so you have no choice but to run the 585 as a router. In which case bridge the TC
Anyway.. open the setup configuration in the Thomson and select a template that says bridge.. run through the wizard and it will then bridge the modem.
And I am using Airport Utility 6.0. How do I get the earlier version?
By reading the site link I just gave you.. downloading the utility and running it on your computer. Or simply google to 5.6 lion airport utility... that is the way I find things when I don't have the link memorised.
Finally, AIrport Utility shows a number in a red dot next to the time capsule icon, currently 2. What is that for? What does it tell us?
Firstly download the useful utility.. but the dots tell you something is wrong and preventing the TC from working.. if you open the utility it should tell you what the errors mean.. I cannot tell you what they are, but it is likely to be no internet connection and pppoe has failed.

  • I bught a new Time Capsule 2Tb. I connected it to my internet router. I manege to set it up as base station but when i try to use it with time machine I always get the message "Check your IP addres"? What am I doing wrong? On my computer I have OSX 10.7.5

I bought a new Time Capsule 2Tb. I connected it to my internet router. I manage to set it up as base station but when i try to use it with time machine I always get the message "Check your IP addres"? What am I doing wrong? On my computer I have OSX 10.7.5

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

  • Problem with new Time Capsule w/ 7.5 Firmware Slow Speeds on 802.11b/g

I purchased a new 1TB Time Capsule with v. 7.5 Firmware last week. This Time Capsule is replacing a first gen 500GB TC with Firmware v. 7.4.2. I have 2 Macbook Pros connecting to the new Time Capsule via 802.11n at 5Ghz and 2 iPhones and 1 first gen Mac Pro connecting to it via 802.11b/g at 2.4Ghz. The Macbook Pros connecting at 5Ghz move data fine. The connection is very fast. Speedtest.net average about 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up. The devices connecting on the 2.4Ghz radio are slow as molasses. They test at less than 30k down and 30k up. Beyond that they have trouble moving data around the LAN as well. There are no sources of major interference near the TC. In fact the TC is in the same location as the old unit which was also running at 2.4Ghz with no problems. I contacted Apple tech support and then went to a local Apple store for an exchange. They gave me another new TC but the problem persists with the new units as well. This evening I took the new Time Capsule into the basement and isolated from any kind of interference with no success. I plugged in the old TC and the 802.11g devices were back up to speed.
Has anyone had any similar issues with the new AE or Time Capsule? I'm sure it's not unheard of to get two defective units but it's not likely. So I am thinking there may be an issue with the new firmware. I tried to downgrade to 7.4.2 but the new units require 7.5. Any suggestions? All network settings are the same as they were with the previous Time Capsule. The only thing that's changed is that both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios are active.

    Hi there,
got some problems with Time Capsule and 7.5 Firmware as well. Since it is my first device, I have no experience with older firmwares or models though.
It is impossible to connect to the 5GHz network. Neither when I have 5GHz and 2.4Ghz in one network or when I set a separate network for the 5GHz.
I always get a timeout message, I also tried deactivating the guest network and I also tried without any password, just would not connect to the 5GHz. By the way, I am sitting 50cm away from the TC and of course, I do have a MacBook Pro that supports 802.11n standard, a brand new MacBook Pro 13.
So, any ideas? I'm going to call Apple on Monday, can't check if it's the notebook, cause I do not have a second device to test ist. My iPhone works fine (802.11g), the 2.4Ghz also works fine with rates around 130-145 usually when close to the TC.
I also noticed that my MacBook Pro won't connect to the 802.11n when compatibility with 802.11b/g is activated. Then it runs with 802.11g instead....
pretty annoying, thought this would work right away?!

  • Backup over the Internet to my new time capsule

I travel a lot, and want to back up my new (late 2013) mac air to my new time capsule.
Can I do this over the internet with time machine?
Sorry, but I can't find this in the user manual. I have DSL at home.
    Thanks!!

Apple says specifically don't do it.
    See BTMM and iCloud instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3486
    And I quote.
Can Time Machine remotely back up or restore data from AirPort Time Capsule or its attached hard drive via Back to My Mac?
Backing up or restoring Time Machine backups remotely (that is, via Back to My Mac and the Internet instead of your local network) is not recommended. If you want to back up or restore with Time Machine and AirPort Time Capsule, you should do so while directly connected to your AirPort Time Capsule's local network.
I think Apple have good reason to recommend you don't do it.. eg.. you can easily corrupt the entire backup. So instead of having an up to date backup you will have none.
Use a 2.5" portable drive when travelling. When you get home.. backup to the TC as usual.

  • Set up 2 tb new time capsule for wifi with apple tv. etc. and wireless backup without any internet....

My title says it all, I have the 2 tb time capsule with no internet at this time. Goal is to create a wifi to be able to use my MAC (OS 10.86) with my wireless printer, apple tv, and to back up data and use time machine all wirelessly. Please take me through the steps needed to make this happen.....

    How do you get internet??
I understand that the TC is not going to be part of that but it still matters how you get internet.
The setup is basically very simple.. The TC still needs to be in router mode.. ie on the network tab it should say dhcp and nat. You will get several errors .. ignore them.. that is because there is no WAN connection.
That is all that is needed.. You can then connect everything via wireless and it will create a network where each device has connectivity to the others.. just no internet.

  • I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

  • HT1695 My new iPad with Retina Display is not able to connect to the Wi-Fi of my new Time Capsule. It used to connect, but now it just spins and spins and never connects. I've tried rebooting everything many times.

My new iPad with Retina Display is not able to connect to the Wi-Fi of my new Time Capsule. It use to connect, but now it just spins and spins and never connects. I've tried rebooting everything many times.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • The new Time Capsule is amazing

I just got my new Time Capsule with 2TB storage. It replaced the previous generation Time Capsule, again with 2TB of storage.
In my network I have a Retina Macbook Pro (early 2013 model) and a 11" Macbook Air (mid 2013). My internet connection is 150Mbit/sec download and 5Mbit/Upload.
With the previous Time Capsule my rMBP would achieve a maximum of 15MB/sec download and my MBA 16,5/sec.
Now, with the new Time Capsule, my rMBP achieved a whopping 17MB/sec!!! I still haven't tested the MBA, but I am confident it can achieve up to 18MB/sec (my maximum download speed).
I can only say that I am amazed how good the new Time Capsule is. Kudos to Apple!

The Gen1 hard disk was a noisy beast although you would have to be up close to hear it still. Modern slow green drives are much better and run cooler.
The new TC runs the standard WD green drive.
See the review here which has a tear down included.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
The problem in Gen1 was a philosophy and a take over by the Interior Decorators at Apple rather than the Engineers. The excellent fan control built into the unit was dismissed as Overheated Engineer Imagination.. OEI for short. The fact that they stuffed a hard disk and power supply into a box slightly bigger than the Extreme.. had nothing to do with subsequent problems.. gollum.. gollum.. according to the Interior Decorator department. Engineers did actually calculate the reactor melt down temperature and turned on the fan to prevent said event.. they turned it on at 100% speed and 100% noise. Because it was seconds away from disaster..
Gen4 the design finally used the fan properly and offers some proportional control.. but you cannot expect no noise out of a plastic box dissipating 30W when it is doing the full job, backups, routing, wireless, gigabit. It still fails in having no fresh air inlet. So stand it on feet to stop the heat build up underneath.
During normal duties though and in normal weather.. you will hardly ever hear it.

  • Apple Time Capsule Keeps Dropping Internet

My Apple Time Capsule keeps dropping internet or having extremely slow internet. If I run a speed test I am getting 90+mbs. What occurs is if I try to load a page, there will be a very long delay and sometimes the page will eventually load, other times it won't. When I try to stream something from youtube, If I can get to the page of the video, it won't have an issue. When I hard wire to my modem, I don't have an issue at all. Only hardwired through the router or using wireless through the router does this occur. The light on the router never has turned amber and the link light on my modem is constantly flashing. The only thing that will occur is that the Apple Airport utility keeps connecting and disconnecting from my modem.
I've reset the router and modem. I've restored the router to factory settings and reset up my network, all to no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thinking I'll replace the motorola with a Cisco DPC3010
You may find it is not much better..
I do think the problem is more on the Apple side..
If you are a tech.. let me suggest you make yourself up a 100 mbit (ie use only the two pairs) crossover cable..
If that does not work.. try reverse polarity..ie in the ethernet on one end swap + and - .. It is an issue that has cropped up before where ethernet is just wired wrongly.. and it doesn't fail completely but becomes unreliable.
BTW the hardware reliability of the new AC version apple routers.. is definitely on the bottom of the apple list.
I bought an AC TC and the first one had this WAN port issue from day one.. when I replaced it after a week (it died completely which was convenient).. the second one has been much better).
The modems I have heard that works well is the zoom or ubee..
Using another router doesn't need to be expensive.. you can still stick to the apple in bridge.. you only need a router that does routing..
And the TP-Link can be flashed to gargoyle.. a hugely superior firmware btw.. solid .. reliable and it will track usage and do a lot of stuff well beyond Apple's keen.
