New Time Capsule set up for Music and Photo sharing

I have set up a new 3TB Time Capsule for my house.  I have an AE wired to extend the network.  The users on the network have various Mac OS's but all are 10.x and we also use iPhones (3, 4, 5, and 6's).
I would like to set up the TC to share all the photos and music I currently have on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012 13 inch, 2.9 GHz i7).  I have iPhoto 9.6 and iTunes 12.0.1.26).  There are about 60,000 photos and about 1,000 songs.
Thanks for your help.

Don't do it.. !!
Apple says specifically don't put your iphoto library on the TC.
And I quote.
iphoto network no no.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

The TC has no media smarts at all.. none.. it is completely dumb stupid hard disk in a router.
If you put libraries on the TC apart from being slow.. because all files must be transferred via the Mac running itunes you then have no backup and no way to backup your files.
Get a large external drive or get a proper NAS with built in iTunes server. (although exactly how well they work I am not sure).
You still should not put your main iphoto library on the NAS but you can put a copy.

  • Does time capsule backup all the music and photo files?

I do not have any files excluded for backup with my time capsule.  So, are all my music and photos stored on my MacBook Pro and iMac backed up each time?
Does it also back up the Photostream in iPhoto?
I am a little confused about all this and do not want to lose any of these files if my MBP hard drive crashes.

Time Machine will back up the iTunes Media Folder, which stores all of your music and video.....and it will also back up the iPhoto Library used with iPhoto.
Time Machine does not backup the entire libraries each time that it runs. Time Machine backs up the entire contents of your Mac on the first "master" backup. Once that is done, Time Machine only backs up the changes that have occurred on your Mac since the last backup.
So, if you have made any changes to the iTunes Media Folder or iPhoto Library since the last backup, Time Machine will pick up the change and back that up on the next pass when Time Machine runs.
Best to ask your question about Photostream in the iPhoto support area. My understanding is that images are normally stored in iCloud, but if you have downloaded images permanently to your Mac, they are stored in the iPhoto Library, which will be backed up.

  • Time Capsule not connecting to WEP printer.  Time Capsule set up for WPA2.  Can I use both standards with one Time Capsule?

How do I get a WEP printer to connect wirlessly to the new Time Capsule set for WPA2?  High security is needed do to large Apt Complex.

Actually, you can but it would require that you reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) for "WEP (Transitional Security Network)." This Wireless Security option allows for both WEP and WPA clients to connect ... BUT does NOT support the AES/CCMP encryption protocol introduced by WPA2. Note: The WPA2 standard supports both the TKIP (used in WPA & WEP) and AES/CCMP (used only in WPA2) encryption protocols.
If you require the stronger AES protocol, WEP clients or WPA clients that only support TKIP will not be able to connect.

  • I have a  Classic Ipod used for music and photos. When I downloaded latest version of Itunes, the photo facility seems to have disappeared, Why?

I have used my Apple Classic Ipod for music and photo storeage/playback. When prompted to download a new versionof Itunes (11.1.0) I did so but cannot now locate any facility for removing/adding photos. Is this a deliberate action on the part of the programmers or a mistake. What can i do to recover the siutation?

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

  • My M-Air start up disk if full; I have the a new time capsule, how do I transfer and use the TC as my main storage drive?

The start-up disk on my MAC AIR is full - I just added a new Time Capsule - how do you transfer your files from the AIR to the TC and set it up to be used as my primary storage disk - not my Mac Air

Get a second external drive, drag both the iTunes library and the pictures to it, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that instance of the library. This also works with iPhoto, but see below.
A drive or partition needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended in order to hold an iPhoto library or for Time Machine to back it up.

  • Can a time capsule be used for backup and as a remote drive?

    Hi Mac users
I want to know if I am able to use the Time Capsule as both a backup, and as a remote Hard Drive at the same time? My Macbook Pro's hard drive is full from movies I have downloaded on itunes, so I need to store them somewhere else, ie not on my macbooks hard drive. At the same time I want to backup everything on the macbook. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Chris

want to know if I am able to use the Time Capsule as both a backup, and as a remote Hard Drive at the same time?
You can, but the Time Capsule was really designed for Time Machine backups and there will be fight for space at some point in the future if you store a signficant amount of data on the Time Capsule drive.
You probably have not thought about this, but if your "original" copies of your movies, audio files, etc are on the MacBook now and you move them to the Time Capsule drive....your "originals" will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you have no backups since your "originals" are on the drive that failed, and you lose everything.
A much safer strategy would be to add an external USB or Firewire drive to your MacBook and store all of your media files there. Then, Time Machine will backup both your MacBook and the external drive.
So, you have "originals" in one location and backups in another location. That's what a backup strategy is all about. In the event that one drive fails...and it will....you still have another copy on another drive.

  • Just updated 10.5 now has location service and others-IOS-ICLOUD etc.  If I hit agree will there be charges I can't find a straight answer. Now I just use my 3 gen. IPOD touch for music and photos. Thanks to all. Tom

The ipod touch wants me to chose or decline these new features. They sound good but I don't want to get any extra charges. Now use for music and phjotos only. Don't want to decline if these are worth while.  Thanks to all.  Tom  Toucch is 3 gen

Thanks for that. Much more constructive than the last comment. It's only the restriction code I can't recall, not the access passcode. So I can currently access the device, just not age restricted content. Does that's make a difference? I also wondered if anyone knew how many attempts you get to try to get it right. Now tried 21 times and so far nothing bad has happened but I am concerned I'll eventually be completely locked out of the device. That doesn't seem in the spirit of things though. Surely it's foreseeable that a child could repeatedly try to guess the code so I can't see that it would be right to lock the device down completely in that circumstance, particularly if the access code is being typed in correctly every time.
    Thanks

  • How can I make Time Capsule main source for music?

So as of right now my macbook pro has around 3gb of memory left. I bought a Time Capsule so i could store all of my music on it and clear up my macbook pro. I was wondering how i could set it up so the main source that itunes is getting my music from is the time Capsule. Thanks!

    Sorry, but definitely not recommended.
If you move your iTunes Media Folder to the Time Capsule disk, when....not if....the drive has a problem.....you have no backups for your data. You lose all of your music.
A much better (and much safer) plan would be to add a USB or Firewire drive to your computer and store your Media Folder there.
Then, Time Machine will backup both your computer and the hard drive with your music files.
Now, you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. That kind of backup strategy makes sense.
Apple's Support Document on moving your iTunes Media Folder is below. Hope you decide to stay safe.

  • Time Capsule: HD readable for Xbox and 'outside'?

    Hi,
I just bought a Time Capsule (TC). Very nice design and my 4th Apple product (that in 6 months!). Anyway, before I got a TC I had a Linksys router. This router had a web interface so I could connect to it from outside home (let's say work). Is this possible with a TC too? Maybe for reading files too from the harddrive (kind of like a server (wouldn't that be very cool?))?
Furthermore, I have a Xbox 360. Is it possible to read TC's harddrive from my Xbox so I can store my Music on there? Or is this only possible with an USB connection only?
Last thing, how is the TC's harddrive formatted? HFS or FAT?
    That's it for now..

    1. Yes, you can enable sharing over WAN and can access the Time Capsule via AirPort Utility over the internet and can access the hard drive using afp://
    2. I believe so, but you have to install some special program to do so. I'd suggest looking on the web for Xbox Media Sharing as I saw some forums related to accessing music, videos, etc. on the Xbox from Time Capsule.
    3. FAT 32

  • Please help me with Time Capsule Set up for guest wifi?

You enable the Guest Network feature on your Time Capsule by using the AirPort Utility.
For v6.x: AirPort Utility > Select your AirPort base station > Edit > Wireless tab > Enable Guest Network

  • HT1178 Time capsule set up for girls

I just bought the time capsule on ebay and i did not receive any cable, user manual or anything else with it. I have no idea how should i start to operate it. I'd like to use it as an external drive for ipad. Could anybody help me with a "what-else-to-buy, where-to-click, step-by-step" list? (For a girl who hasn't got a clue about computers since commodor64)
Many thanks if someone has got the patience.

Hmmm well a TC is really the wrong device to store files on.. and a second hand one may just be asking for trouble.
You need a power cord.. surely it was supplied to you with power cord?? Otherwise Apple do not supply any other cords. And there is no manual (paper) download and read the info listed at the head of this discussion. And the driver disk is useless and out of date.. also not surprising.. apple do not distribute software by disk anymore anyway.
(For a girl who hasn't got a clue about computers since commodor64)
You must have lived in a cave for a long time. That was long long ago.
Do you have other computers on the network? Please list what you have.. there is a setup utility for Time Capsule in iOS but it is limited since the iOS is not actually designed to work at the file level. It is designed to work with itunes in a computer.
But there is no complex setup of the TC needed.
How do you get internet into the house now??
Please give exact description and model number of modem and routers you have.
The most important thing is to recognise the iPad will not function at the file level without a file browsing app.
I am sticking to non-swipe computers.. so I do not use iPad but you can check what file apps are available via google.. install one and see how you go.
BTW ... if your washing machine goes bung.. you call a washing machine Technician to fix it.
Networking is rather complex.. you will not learn or understand it in a day.
Calling a Technician to setup things for you may offer a far superior user experience than bashing your head against the wall for a month.. and then calling the tech in frustration.
A computer savvy friend can substitute if you want cheaper.. and the usual offerings of food or wine.. slabs of beer here in Aus is the usual payment.

  • Traveling with ipod 60 for music and photos

hello, so here is the deal: i just bought an ipod 6o gb photo so i could listen to music and download photos off my digital camera when i am traveling in south east asia for the next 5 or so months. problem #1: i have an older ibm thinkpad with windows xp and i am reading horror stories of trying to get my music put onto the ipod. i can deal with that problem by using my friends apple computer to put music on, but then am i going to be able to pull my photos off my ipod and put them on my computer after the trip. any help would be appreciated, thanks eric

I have a similar travel situation, but different question. I, too, am traveling for 6 or more months throughout the east with a 60GB ipod & camera setup. I'm wondering if anyone has experience w/being able to take your music collection on a portable harddrive, and using a computer in various internet cafes to create new playlists or edit your itunes library and re-sync your ipod? I'm trying to avoid carrying my laptop along w/me, but still have the flexibility of editing the music & audiobook content on my ipod. Can itunes be installed on the harddrive, so that it can be opened from any computer, or does itunes have to be installed directly on the computer that I may be using at an internet cafe? If so, has anyone found luck w/having the on-site person allow you to install itunes on their workstations? Any suggestions?
