New to 3550's
I understand without SVI on each group of ports I can't route traffic through my Gig 0/1 connection. I need to be able to put the listed networks below all on my
3550 Version 12.1(22)EA1a switch. I have no problems adding the vlan's nor getting the trunk to be seen by our L3 Nortel 8600 core switch. At least it comes up
and you can ping through the first set of ports which I understand is everything in vlan1. I can't seem to get the other vlan's to pass traffic through the trunk.
Ports 1,3,5,7,9,11 192.168.34.0 wireless devices network
Ports 2,4,6,8,10,12 192.168.31.0 Printers using IP
Ports 13,15,17,19,21,23 172.16.0.0 Users Computers
Ports 14,16,18,20,22,24 192.168.33.0 Other IP devices
Any ideas, my ultimate goal is not to use any more IP's than I have to as I need to deploy this same switch in over 50 locations campus wide. If I have to start
using a IP for SVI's on each of those networks I will be in real trouble and will run out with what I have available. The 172 network does have to be able to get to
their printers but nothing else.
Here is my config what am I doing wrong.
Don't see where you created the L2 vlans . Do a "show vlan" and all the vlans you want to use must show up in there ,if not then you must create them . Just because you used the switchport access vlan XX command on the port does not mean it is created . To create the vlan at the config prompt do a "vlan XX" to create the vlan . A little confused on the rest of your info. It looks as though you only have 4 networks . If you have fiber to all your other locations you should be able to just trunk to the other switches and you will need only 1 address per switch to manage it . Ideally it would be good to have just a management vlan to support just the switch management. Any way you look at it if you want to manage the switches which you really have to it will take 50 ip addresses to manage your switches .
If you have more than 1 switch in each location you may be able to cluster them but I haven't had the opportunity to implement that so I can't comment.

Solved! Windows 7 driver solution for HP Color LaserJet 3550
I had success getting the HP Color LaserJet 3550n (the 3550 family ) printer to install in Win7. That printer was the only thing that did not fire up with Win7. In the Devices and Printers window, I tried troubleshooting, but it was a problem with the DOT4USB drivers. Similarly to others, I was successful by using the following course of action:
1) Went to HP and downloaded the Vista 32-bit drivers for the 3550, unpacking them at C:\HP CLJ3550\ as suggested by the driver file.
2) In Devices & Printers, did <Right-Click> <HP 3550> <Properties> <Hardware tab>
3) I selected the first "Device Function" <DOT4USB> then did <Properties> <Change Settings> <Driver tab> <Uninstall>.
4) I then selected the second and third Function (which were <HP Color LaserJet 3550> and <IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer> and did the the <Properties> ... <Uninstall> for each.
5) I disconnected the USB to the printer, went back to Devices & Printers, and selected <Add a Printer>.
6) I selected <Add a local printer> <Use existing port DOT4_001> <Next> <Have Disk> <C:\HP CLJ3550> <OK> and installed the printer.
7) It would not work unless I "let" Windows make it the Default Printer
8) After it was finished, I did <Right-Click> on my preferred printer and selected <Set as default printer>, and everything worked.
This question was solved.
View Solution.I want to thank you for the solution. You saved me the expense of having to purchase a new computer. I used the 64 bit 2003 version and it works just fine. The people at HP were not very cooperative at all. When I called, the lady who answered the phone asked if I was from the United States or Canada. When I stated the United States she had a big sigh
of disgust. When I explained my problem that I was having with the 3550 Laser jet and HP not having the Window 7 drivers, and that the printer was non functional, she stated that I should have researched whether or not my printer was compatible with a new operating system before purchasing it. I asked her if HP would have a compatible driver soon as I did not want to have to purchase a new printer. Then she stated that my printer was old (I bought it in 2005) and what did I expect,t as if the printer not working was my fault. I told them about your solution to this problem and if they could help me through the step but she did not cooperate .Even if I had to pay the $39 fee to the tech dept for their assistance it was worth it saving time. HP service in my opinion is very poor and will lean toward a competitors product if I am faced with a choice. Thank you again. -
HP Deskjet 3550 cannot print using Airport Extreme via USB connection on Windows 7 64 bits
Product Name and Number: HP Deskjet 3550 Inkjet Printer
Operating System installed: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits
Error message: None
Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred: Setting up HP printer using Airport Utility to add a new printer and installed Bonjour Print Wizard.
Problem: My printer is already set up using Airport Utility. When I print something, the printer doesn't do anything. Is there something I haven't done lately in order to get this printer working using my wifi router?
Suggestion #1: Are the print jobs getting stuck in the print queue? You can check this by clicking on the printer icon in your task tray by the clock.
Error Message #1: Yes, the print job got stuck in the print queue, but the moment, it disappeared from the print queue and the printer doesn't print at all. This is frustrating.
Suggestion #2: Does the printer work as expected if you connect it directly to the PC via USB?
Error Message #2: Yes, the printer works if I connect it directly to my PC via USB, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work with the wifi router, though.
Suggestion #3: This has to do with the way the router handles the connection to the printer. I found another thread, regarding this issue, and it has some information that may help resolve it.
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/Print-Problem-Using -USB-Printer-on-Airp...
If that does not help, I would recommend posting on the Apple forums, as they may have more expertise with the router's abilities:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
Error Message #3: After clicking on the first link that you posted, it was very helpful, but the printer couldn't print completely and somehow it would stop at the quarter of a paper. It looks incomplete when I took it out from my printer. It does that every time.UPDATE!
Problem solved! So this is just a followup in case someone else ever stumbles into these boards with the same or similar problems as mine, that is, trying to run an HP Deskjet D1500 series printer [mine's a D1520] on an Airport Extreme wifi router's USB port as a network printer [with the Airport Extreme controlled by an ancient G4 PowerMac Quicksilver currently running OS X 10.4.11).
Although it probably SHOULDN'T matter, since this type of printer works fine with just the Tricolor cartridge as shipped when hooked up directly to a computer's USB port, on a hunch I got a black HP cartridge (that's a type 21, not type 22 as I had earlier said), slapped it in, tried a test page, and all's well. So, we can call off the technoid hounds. Everything running perfectly.
I hope this message in a bottle may help someone else out there some day soon who may be scratching his or her head with a similar stumper. And just to recap those important Windows printer settings, they are:
* [Printer Properties--> Ports--> Add New Port...] "Standard TCP/IP Port"
* [Configure Port] IP Address "10.0.1.1" and Port "9100"
Best of luck!

Routing Issue with 3550 Switch
I am having an issue with routing with one of my Cisco 3550 switches. I know the 3550s are EoL but some of us have to work with what we have.
I am using a 3550 on either side of a Layer 2 link. The Layer 2 link is 2 Extreme Summit X-440 switches with Microwave between the switches. I have a VLAN configured on both switches and tagged on the ports connected to the Microwave. The 3550 switch on each end is configured for IP routing but I cannot pass traffic between the switches. If I unplug the switch on the local end and plug in a laptop, I can ping the switch on the remote end and access devices at the remote end.
I know this should work because I am doing the same thing over another Microwave link and Layer 2 link using another 3550 and a HP ProCurve at the remote end.
Here are the configs for each 3550:

Ideas? Anything stand out as grossly wrong? I have worked on this for 2 days and am at a loss.
Thanks
JameySorry for the delay in replying. Other items at the office took priority over this project. I tried that and no change. I pulled the switch from the remote site and took it back to the local end and connected the switches with a crossover cable and everything works fine. I have pretty much determined that it is an issue with the config in one of the Extreme switches. The config in those look pretty normal but there are a few things I am unsure of. Guess I'll see if there is a similar site for Extreme gear.
Thanks

Job stops (HP DJ 3550 connected to AEX via USB)
Hi everybody,
Here is the setup:
1- PB G4 15" w/ MacOS X 10.4.2 uptodate w/ Airport Extreme card installed
2- Airport Express base (firmware 6.2) setted using Airport Admin Utility 4.2:
- Home router
- WAN: ADSL modem connected using PPPoE
- USB: HP DeskJet 3550 (recognized by system)
- Network managed by DHCP & NAT
- No Port Mapping, no Access Control, no WDS, no Music
3- HP DeskJet 3550 connected via USB to AEX
4- Printer added to PB using Printer Setup Utility V4.1 (157.2):
- hp deskjet 3500, connected through Bonjour
- Driver HP Inkjet 2.7.1
From whatsoever application I print, it starts the job in the printer queue then stops (msg Jobs stopped).
I included the console file for the experts...
I tried reset, driver, update... you name it, it still doesn't work.
It works using the USB and a Airport Extreme Base Station.
I know that this printer is not in the compatibility list, but it really works with my AEBS!!
Any help would be very appreciated as I am completly clueless...
Thank you in advance... PascalHi Chris, thank you for the update and the trick.
I have also some (good) news on my side.
I tried the same as you did (restarting/reseting the AEX several times) and, effectively, the printer worked... until it stopped again a few prints after.
So I went with the hard way (no, it is not throwing the AEX by the window).
I installed the HPIJS and declared the printer as a network component with an IP address (like if it has a JetDirect). Now the problem is definitly fixed.
Here are the steps:
(see also page http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html)
go to page http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/ and download both softwares:
- hpijs-foomatic-2.0.2.ppc.dmg
- espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg
Install them.
Go to Printer Setup Utility
Add a new printer
Select IP Printer
Select Protocol HP Jet Direct - Socket
Enter address: 10.0.1.2 (or the address of your AEX)
Queue: leave blank
Name: HP DeskJet 3550 - HPIJS (or the name you want)
Location: Airport Express Base (or the location you want)
Print using: HP
Select model: HP DeskJet 3550C HPIJS (or your model)
Set the printer as default if necessary -
How do I add a Subnet and vlan with a catalyst 3550 and RV120
Hello Friends.
I have a scenario that i'm hoping i can get some help with. I'll be as detailed and descriptive as i can.
This is for a business with 100 employees nodes and 100 camera nodes all needing IP internet through private addressing and public gateway.
I have a business class gateway with a private range of 12 public addresses. Ther modem does nothing but act as a gateway since i have disabled the firewall and DHCP.
In place of the firewall and DCHP from the modem i have installed a RV120 Firewall with VPN. When installing i replicated the IP scheme of the modem as to not disturb and distrup the devices assigned addresses from that scheme from the modem. I did this because the owner could not have any down time or any disruption to the business operations.
The RV120 now acts as firewall , DHCP , and VPN. I'll address the subnet first. I's using 10.0.0.0/24 subnet range.
DHCP is assigning 10.1.10.50 - 10.1.10.100 the rest are static and i plan to use static DHCP with the IP and MAC assigned to each static DHCP address.
There are 100 cameras with static IP addresses in the range of 10.1.10.11 - 10.1.10.40, and 10.1.0.1.101 - 10.1.10.170.
VPN uses PPTP assigned address 10.1.10.6 - 10.1.10.10.
There are no layer 3 switches that i know of. Just a layer two that is the primary swith and ports have run out, and various out of the box switches and wireless access points connected to the primary switch.
I want to implement subnets into the network and VLANS as well on a new Layer 3 switche from cisco. Thinking 3550 from Cisco or one of the older layer 2 switches with layer three capabilities.
I also want to introduce a 192.168.0.0/24 IP range for the existing wireless network and segment the traffic from the rest of the traffic on other ranges.
I want to replace the 10.0.0.0/24 DHCP alltogether and the static addresses for end user nodes on the same network, but keep that range just for camera nodes segmented.
I want to implement a NEW end user IP range and VLAN for employee/guest networks using the 172.16.0.0/24 range.
Iv'e thought of replacing all the wireless nodes with RV120's and use VLAN. Dont know if that strategy works. Need to think it through.
I want the 192.168.0.0/24 IP range comunicate to with the 172.16.0.0/24 and possibly the 10.0.0.0/24 range.
Any advice on how to do this?
As a side note the next step after this is to install a server domain controller as all the computers are all stand alones in their own workgroups. It's a simultaneous project that will introdue a DCHP, WINS, DNS server.Hi Omid, it sounds like you're proposing the 3550 switch but you're not decided yet. The 3550 switch is a pretty old device and needs enhanced multilayer image. It may be more prudent to use a more current switch such as small business SG300 or SG500 as the feature set is more rich and it supports around 480 LAN connections.
To answer the inquiry, the RV120W, when you create a VLAN it will automatically create an IP interface. From this you may assign subnet as you like along with 'enable or disable' for inter vlan routing. Since the RV120W has this feature, a layer 3 switch is not required unless you are looking to keep the routing load smaller by routing locally with the switch.
With Catalyst or a small business switch you would need to create a VLAN. After creating the VLAN, on a Catalyst you can simply issue "switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q" on the desired interface and all VLAN will passage without issue. For a port connecting a user "switchport mode access" "native vlan xx" This will assign the port as untag member of the desired VLAN.
If using a small business switch, it is slightly different, you still create the VLAN but the command issue is a bit different "switchport trunk allowed vlan add xx" for the link to the router, where xx = the VLAN ID to tag to the router. For access client it remains the same as Catalyst. -

which pkg else should I remove?
your kernel. i'd recommend you to do that first:
cp /boot/System.map26 /boot/System.map26.old
cp /boot/vmlinuz26 /boot/vmlinuz26.old
in case of problem with your newly installed kernel, edit the grub entry at boot according to the new back-up names above.
then simply:
pacman -Uf kernel26-snapshot-2.6.31-rc6-git6-i686.pkg.tar.gz
also, why has mkinitcpio been removed? reinstall it before installing your new kernel. -
HP Color Laserjet 3550 - the "attention" light won't turn off
I've tried everything I can think of for weeks but I can't get the "attention" light on my HP Color Laserjet 3550 to turn off. It originally came on when a page on from the manual input tray got stuck maybe 20% of the way in. It was a real easy fix, I pulled the page out and now the "attention" light won't turn off. So I can use the printer at all. I've had this printer about a year. I purchased it used. I've always had the manual feed tray as the default because I use this printer mostly for envelopes and less than 81/2 x11 printing as I have an old workhorse HP 4+ for all my straight 81/2 x 11 printing. I've rebooted. I've unhooked cables and the router. I've opened up the printer and removed the casing (the plastic apparatus on the door) and replaced it. The router is a 2Wire HomePortal 1800HG. I'm just baffled here I've printed so much with the manual feed tray and I've had allot worse things happen that I've had to fix. Now a simple stick like this and the light just wont' go off.

HI Vern,
Where did you bought the printer? may you bought it from a different region than your current one?
What is the exact cartridge number of both the black and the tri-color ink cartridge, as well as their product number?
I bought the printyer in the US and the cartridges also came from the US, probably no the same state. Cartdridge # 97, black # 96. I don't see a product number. This is the same # that was in the printer before and the same one I always used. As soon as I pull it out the light goes out, and on again as soon as I install it. This is before the printer even cycles through it's "new cartdridge" routine, if you know what I mean.
thanks for the reply -
Windows 8 driver solution for HP Color LaserJet 3550
I have successfully installed on my "windows 8 32bit" Hp color laserjet 3550 printer with a USB cable.
(the guides seemed possible only with win8 64bit)
Follow these steps:
1) in Hp website support driver, select drivers for windows XP
2) download clj3550prnsyswin-us.exe (HP color LaserJet 3550 printing system 2.0 April 15, 2005 86.4 MB)
3) run the setup you unzip the files in c: \ clj3550 printing systems
4) Connect the USB printer
5) in the control panel, printer management, add a new local printer
6) aggingere drivers from disk, select driver in c: \ clj3550 printing systems
7) At this point the printer is created (hp color laserjet 3550), but it does not work, does not print any page
8) in device manager right click and update drivers automatically, he searches for the driver online, update them and concludes the setup
9) now in the control panel, printer management, you will find another printer, hp color laserjet 3550 copy. This one print very well.
I hope it is useful
Best Regards AnubiAnubi80,
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .
I hope this helps.

HP Color Laserjet 3550 and Leopard not working!PLEASE HELP!!
Please excuse me if this has been answered, but after being on the phone for 2 hours with HP, and looking through 100 support articles I am at the point of no return when it comes to frustration.
I have an Imac that I bought 6 months ago. Today my very generous brother bought me the new Leopard. I was very excited after I installed it. It was afterall another reason to play and explore. Then I found a bug.... I am a graphic artist and I went to print out a design for a client and it would not print. No matter what I tried my Imac that was printing to my HP COLOR LASERJET 3550, less then 2 hours ago, was no longer printing. Everytime I send something to print, the printer would say "printer connection opening" then it would say "fatal error......" and pause the job again.
PLEASE HELP WHAT DO I DO!!!! I AM VERY UPSET AND VERY FRUSTRATED!!!!I just bought my MacBook Pro last week. I have been trying off and on for 3 days to get it to print to my HP Color Laserjet 3550 through apple talk and keep getting a message: The Application Printer Proxy Quit Unexpectedly.
I tried the generic post script printer driver. I no longer got the message but it didn't print either. I am at my wits end.
I was going to upgrade my IMac to Leopard and I sure am glad I read your post. I now will not upgrade because my IMac prints just fine.
So I at least learned something here. Maybe Leopard isn't the best system yet. -
Headphone jack not working on brand new late 2012 27" iMac
Just purchased the new late 2012 27" iMac. Have tried 3 pairs of headphones, all work with my iPhone but when plugged into back of iMac, they do not show up in Sound>Output as an option. Only internal speakers and Apple TV.
I have pushed...hard. Not the issue.
Tired changing Audio Midi settings to 32-bit floating. Didn't do anything...
Any thoughts?
ThxWhat you did at last?
This is happening to me and I'm very disappointed and frustrated!
Is the first time I tried to use a headphones and the stupid machine doesn't work!
I already reseted PRAM and SMC also updated OS to 10.8.4
Is a HW problem?
Do I have to go to the store and lost ALL the time I already invested in SW install and file moving from my old laptop?
By the way I can see the light when I unplug the heardphones.
Before some help desk robot asks, YES, I tried 3 pair of phones ALL of them work well in my Vostro 3550, Samsung S3 and in my Nexus 7.
Some light here please! -
No printing Windows 8.1 64 bit printing to a Laser Jet 3550 USB
I purchased a new HP Envy 700 computer with Windows 8.1 i5 (64-bit). I checked before purchase and made sure drivers were listed at HP. I have 2 new HP lap tops that do not print but never tried to make them work.
Now my HP Color Laser Jet 3550 isn't recognized or print and will not load any drivers. When I try troubleshooting, it says, no problem found. The icon is not in the printer control panel. I Pluged in to USB 2. and 3. ports. HP technical help was no help. (My Printer is Old) No one at HP seems to know about this problem. Any one have a solution? Thanks!Hi,
The printing is not supported on Windows 8, however a workaround available by using the drivers for Vista.

3550 dot1.x+win2009radius+win7 supplicant
1.48 port Cisco 3550 Series 12.2 with enchanced feature set has to make dot1.x for the clients with windows 7 Pro OS. The radius must be W2008 Standart.
2.WInd2008 NPS is configured with Network policy and appropriate NPS client settings. It works when I try to connect to them from linux mashine with radtest. It doesn't work when I try to connect to them from Cisco (trying from client Windows 7 mashine).
debug radius authenticatis tell me the authentiaction fails - the same information is in the server event log too -The client could not be authenticated because the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) Type cannot be processed by the server.
.I saw the client sends the correct username (in cisco with debug).

When I remove the authentiacation, cisco tell ACCESS-ACCEPT, but the question mark on the network card settings in Windows 7 still exists. I think this is second separate problem.
3.Windows 7 client mashine is configured with dot1.x authentication eap/peap and mschapv2. The user and password as I told were correct. I thied with the mashines joined to domain, not joined to domain (in workgroup) and joined to other domain. There is no difference.
4.Cisco settings has been made regarding http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3550/software/release/12.2_25_see/configuration/guide/sw8021x.html and additionally - here I think I tried all the combinations.

IPX not working with new Network Configuration
Here is my situation. I have been engaged with a customer that had the following equipment.
1x 3640 Router running IOS c3640-d-mz.121-3a.T1
1x 3550 L3 Switch running IOS 12.1.15 EMI
8 x 3548XL L2 Switches running IOS c3500xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC13.bin
When I was asked to look at the network they were experiencing slow LAN speeds (10.8MB file between two LAN hosts around 12 minutes). This network consisted of 10 Class C networks 10.5.60.x - 10.5.69.x, these networks were based on the 3560 split between two interfaces. Odd ranges on FE 0/0 and Even on FE0/1. The router was acting as a stub router on a T1 from the clients core network provider. This core provider has IPX services that my client has to be able to use. Under the old design there was no VLAN structure and basic network services such as DHCP barely worked.
Now the network is configured with the 3640 router as the edge routing device and the 3550-48-EMI is configured as the LAN routing devices. I have split the 10.5.60.x range in two using the lower segment for VLAN 60 and using the upper range as the communication network between FE 0/48 on the 3550 (ip addr 10.5.60.130 255.255.255.128) and FE 0/0 on 3640 (ip addr 10.5.60.131 255.255.255.128), these interfaces are connected via an ISL Trunk. Each VLAN is set at the 3550 with the gateway of 10.5.x.1. Each of the 8 3548XL switches is configured with all of the VLANS and are linked to the 3550 via 100 BaseT and 1000BaseT interfaces configured as dot1q trunks. Multicast routing is enabled on the 3550 to allow services like MDNS and Imaging to occur across VLANS.
With all this said IPX is not working. My 3640 edge router is still seeing all of its upstream IPX servers and networks. This router also sees the local IPX network as connected out of FE 0/0, based on this config setting (ipx network 1368023) FE 0/0. I'm guessing that this piece of the puzzle is based on my L3 changes on the LAN. But I just am not able to wrap my head around what it is. Any help that could be offered concerning this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Whatever the solution is it needs to happen with no more hardware and this new structure has to stay in place. I have been able to fix all ip network services such as DHCP and the customer reports a 1013% speed increase from the point when I first arrived. The 10.8 MB file mentioned above now transfers in about 8 to 10 seconds across the LAN.
Again Thanks.I was pretty sure of that. Is there anyway to tag the IPX traffic to a VLAN from the 3600 as described in http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120t/120t1/ipx_vlan.htm Which so far hasnt worked...
Or is there a way that I can simply use broadcasts at a L2 level to accomplish connectivity? This was working like a charm under the bad network configuration that was purely L2 and 10 subnets drapped accross two router interfaces. It seems like there should be some sort of simple fix I'm missing.
Otherwise is there a way to have the VLAN clients talk up to the 3600 in order to get IPX information? In the end this is a short term fix. 3 weeks from now the IPX app is being replaced by and IP app. But I need it for 3 more weeks.
Thanks,
Josh
