New to Apple and thinking of binning

Hi there,
i just purchased a Macbook Pro Retina, very swish. After about 2 days, it informed me there was a systems update on OS X? Easy money, just downloaded it, quick as a flash! Only problem, ever since this, Keychain has been asking me for passwords, do i want to save passwords et al.
I have not even set up Keychain, which when at the Apple store setting the e-mail and stuff up, I was advised to set up Keychain at a later date? I can no longer access my e-mail, my password to log in doesn't work and other programmes are having glitches ll the time?
I have nephews and a niece who implored me to get an Apple, but at the moment, I feel like I should have gone for a run of the mill Lap-Top, for half the price and less of the headaches!
Looking forward to any advice?

You don't Set It Up it is used by default and no way not to use it.
Seems you have a faulty install of OS X or some other OS X corruption.
You have a couple of options.
1) Reinstall OS X over the top of the current install. That might fix the current problems it also might not.
2) Erase the drive and reinstall OS X, programs and any personal files you have. (BACKUP your personal files before doing this)
3) Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for full refund. Return it and buy something that fits you better.
4. Call AppleCare or go to an Apple Store and let them help you fix it. That's what AppleCare is for.

  • New to Apple, I think my ipod touch is doa

    Hello all
First of all, I would just like to say I am new to Apple and the discussion forums so hello to all!
Unfortunately, my main reason for joining isn't a positive one. I have received an 1st gen 8gb ipod touch from an upgrade offer with a mobile phone network (UK). After a long wait and several complaints to them, they finally sent me the ipod. However, I think the device is dead on arrival.
When I first unboxed it, I did the usual thing: Download iTunes, connect the device to my computer. iTunes informed me that the device was in "recovery mode" and that I must "restore" first to use the iPod. This is where the problem is, the restore process does not complete. I get an "1604" error.
I went to an Apple store, where a kind member of staff attempted to get me started with the device only to encounter the same problem. He pointed out to me that on the same page as the "restore" button in iTunes, the ipod information does not state the device capacity and other information which he found wierd. Could this be clue to whats going on?
The mobile phone network don't want anything to do with my problem as it was a promotional offer, also they no longer have stock of the device and the new ipod is out now. They insist I should take up my problem with apple.
Has anyone had experience with this? Maybe there is someone out there who has also had a doa device. Any advice is much appreciated. What are my options? Am I able to have this device repaired or replaced?
    Many thanks in advance
    -J

    Typical phone service.
Not the 1604, this will lead to error (6).
Had this while trying to update to 2.0.
Congradualations to your phone company for sending you an iPod with an overloaded hardriive incapable of handling a software too advanced for it.

Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.

After some advice, I am new to Apple and looking to purchase either the MacBook Air 13inch with 256GB and 8GB mem or the MacBook Pro 13inch with retina 256Gb and 8GB mem. I am an assistant principal in a primary school and also studying my masters at university. I don't play computer games and I don't watch movies. I do store photos and videos of my kids and music on iTunes. I also like browsing the net with numerous windows open, check email etc. I am really wanting long battery life as I do a lot of my work on the couch - not close to a PowerPoint. Would the air do the trick or will it soon be outdated as Apple move towards retina display? Both air and pro seem very thin  - almost the same? And not much difference in weight either so both very portable which is also a necessary requirement. Just can't help dreaming about that 12 hour claimed battery life. Any helpful advice/opinions, very much appreciated. Thanks

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

  • I am new to Apple and just got an iPad Air.  Any suggestions on migrating my Windows Vista Contacts and IE Favorites to the iPad?  The suggested method of using iCloud is restricted to Windows 7 and 8.  Thanks.

I am new to Apple and just got my iPad Air.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can migrate Contacts from Windows Mail and Favorites from IE that are on a Windows Vista desktop ?   The recommendation that I have seen are via using iCloud but that does not appear to work for Windows Vista, just Windows 7 and 8.  Thanks.

You could try putting your contacts in through Gmail and then signing in with that Gmail on your iPad. You could also try searching for some kind of app that will transfer data easily (I'll look into it and update it if I find anything). I don't have any Microsoft products so I'm not sure if I'm much help but I'll definitely try. You'll definitely love coming to Apple it's much simpler and easier!

I'm new to Apple and have a new Ipad2.  I cann't view images that need a flash plug in like Addobe.  What app do I need?
    D

Flash is not supported on the iPad, and probably never will be as Apple don't want it, and Adobe have never managed to create a version of their flash player that works on iOS devices - and Adobe have recently announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of it.
Browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites. Also some websites, especially news sites, have their own apps in the App Store, and there is the built-in YouTube app.

  • My Apple ID won't process because my bank information isn't matching what to do I'm new to Apple and can't download anything?

My Apple ID won't process because my bank information isn't matching what to do I'm new to Apple and can't download anything?

You've checked the name and address on your iTunes account and it's in exactly the same format (including spacing and layout) as the credit card that you are trying to use is registered to ? And the card was issued by a bank in the country where you and your iTunes account are ?
    From http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1646
If the issue persists, contact your credit card company and verify that they and any company they use to process credit card authorisations have the correct information on file.
And/or try contacting iTunes support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
Or do you have a different card that you could try, or do you get the 'none' option on your account ? Unless the instructions on this page are followed when creating an account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.

  • TS1314 I locked my phone and all i care about are my photos and so i am trying to see if they were successfully backed up to my icloud acount but i am new to apple and so it is a whole new language. Anybody have any advice?

Hello, i have locked myself out of my iphone 4s, i am new to apple and so i have no idea what is happening....but i don't mind resetting the phone, i just need to check and see if my photos were successfully backed up especially cause my whole system has been hacked and so much stuff has been blocked/changed ??? Any ideas?

Whether your music purchases will be in the cloud will depend upon what country that you are in, and whether it is still in the store (record companies occasionally remove their music) - you can't add music to the cloud without subscribing to iTunes Match.
You should be able to copy your library over from your existing computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527

Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Read and follow all the steps.
The article makes reference to your OS X install disc. When asked to start your MacBook Air with that, use OS X Recovery.

  • New to Apple and it is so hard to find anything etc Nothing as easy as XP

Hi everyone I have just got the laptop thought I would go for the best. All the hype is just not living up to it everything you do is twice as long as on XP. Finding folders, finding where your downloads have gone when you do find it and install it you cannot find where it has gone. Putting Icons on your folders is just a nightmare so long winded. I can see why people are not buying apple it is just so difficult to find things. I dare say I will get used to it but the help is pretty awful as well. I am seriously thinking of selling it as it is unfriendly so I cannot understand the hype.
I downloaded an icon set when eventually I found them on the apple site again they are ridiculously hard to find on the site. I downloaded a screen saver the anemone but cannot find where it goes to. I found it in the download folder and installed it assuming it goes to the screensavers but no. So where has it gone? Hunting for system folders again cannot find them. I see apple is so different to XP cannot find any folders so I assume they do not exist. I am very disappointed with apple I think one needs to come straight in to apple computers and not touch windows as it just does not help when one changes to apple.
But if anyone can help me to find where the anemone screensaver would of gone too please do? End of rant and I am trying to persevere but I am so unimpressed so far. I need converting.

    A couple of points..
    1) downloads - go to your home folder, look in "Downloads"
    2) System Folders - don't worry about them. As a newcomer to mac, there's almost nothing in there you can tinker with. Even the most die-hard mac users rarely have need to delve around in there.
    3) Finding things?
"Spotlight" at top right is an immensely powerful search system. The magnifying glass.
Try the sidebar "Search for" options too.
    4) How things work... just try dragging and dropping them. Unlike Windows, try to get away from the mindset of "I need to use this program to do this to that file" - think more like "what would be neat is if I simply clicked this and it worked..." think in terms of tasks, not programs.
    5) Icons - highlight the icon you want to copy. Get-Info (apple-I) click on the icon itself, Copy (apple-C) Highlight the file/folder you want to change the icon on. Get-info, Click on the icon, Paste (apple-V) (much more work to write down than to actually do!)
    For example your screen saver.
    Download it.
    Double click on it.
It should (assuming its a mac screensaver open your screen saver utility (in System preferences) and allow you to configure it. No installing, no system folder...
Cant find it? Use Spotlight to search for "anemone" - or perhaps 'anemona'
Or in Safari, in Windows->Downloads (the download manager) theres a little mag glass that means "show in Finder" click on that.
If you have a local apple store, stop by one day, and chat with one of their staff. Smart folks who are always ready to help.

  • Some Positive News on Apple and iPhone Dealings Today

Howdy. I have a good news story from my dealings with Apple and I felt the urge to send some positive news to the masses.
I bought an iPhone 3GS 16gb a month ago and had to make an appt at the Genuis Bar to get some help as battery life was woeful and had a few glitches to report.
The really friendly dude simply gave me a "new" (ie: Replacement) unit and I went away happy. That unit however had someone else's gremlins and did some freaky stuff (such as take a photo of the home screen on its own, rearranged icons literally before my eyes, and shut off and turned back on with reduced life!!).
I returned to the store in Doncaster (Melbourne) today and they provided me a FULL refund of outright costs and Apple plan on an Apple giftcard, then got me a NEW unit, no questions asked and out of the store in 20 minutes all set up and grinning again (coz I seriously love this phone, after being a Nokia and Blakberry Bold fan).
The staff (of 16 in store!!!!), were brilliant and provided Customer Service the way it should be done.
Nice Work Apple.....I tip my hat to you all.

    Are you using Home Sharing?

i'm newt to apple and have just put a mini cd in my imac and it wont eject.....help

As you've already found, you can't use mini cds in slot-loading drives (which is what Apple uses, as well as many PCs now).

  • New to Apple and Time Capsule Wireless

I am a new apple customer.  I just bought my 1st iMac and I am trying to make the total break from MS.
I have mediacom as my ISP and my present wireless router is a Linksys WRT600n (purchased about 3 years ago).  With this system I have had problems with coverage in my house as well as needing to reboot the device often.
The router is located in a 1st floor bedroom and I get spotty coverage in the living room and even more spotty service in the adjacent kitchen.  The distances away from the router as the crow flies is 24 feet for the living room (involves 4 interior walls) plus 15 more feet (an another wall) to the kitchen.  Since we use our wireless system more in our living room and our bedroom (this is only 12 feet away and 1 interior wall), I have decided to move the wireless router to the living room and place it on top of a entertainment center.  My thinking is that it will provide better coverage to the areas where we use it (hoping to use Apple TV in both living room and bedroom).
This leads me to my question: what has been the experience of the time capsule community in regards to time capsule wireless coverage and reliability?
Also, please note that the iMac will be located in the same bedroom where I will be removing the current router and as such, the wireless backup capabilities of the time capsule will need to traverse the same 24 feet and 4 interior walls.
Any feedback will be most appreciated.

The reliability of the Apple Extreme is very good.. TC much less good. 3years is often a failure point for stuff that runs too hot. Like your WRT600N and the TC with its Green Drive and internal power supply.
On wireless range though I would say pretty ordinary. I have tested all the generations of the TC and most of the Extreme.. including Gen5. In my double storey house with an old G wireless modem router (downstairs extreme end).. right near the TC/AE whichever I am running.. from the other end of the house (upstairs) the old G wireless gives more than adequate signal to get full speed internet.. the TC does not.. And 5ghz goes pretty much to the next room and then disappears but that is as expected.
Use the tests here to find what give good range.
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn (you can change the chart to give speed in the worst location ie F http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
Airport extreme is there. Well down but there.
