New to Backups - New to Time Machine (Mac as well) ???

Hello all,
as mentioned in the title, I am new to Mac, Time Machine, and have never REALLY used a backup utility to its full extent.
I have a 1 TB internal Drive and a 1 TB external.
I set two partitions on the external (300GB for Time Machine - 700GB for storage) and I figured that there was some sort of compression or selection process of the things that get backed up.
Apparently it simple copies EVERY file on my computer to an external location?
That means that in order for me to use Time Machine I need to give it 1TB of storage?

5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup."

Just use the archive utility on the disk page of the airport utility manual setup..
If you have lion and v6 airport utility.. it missed out. On lots of things.

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. Apps won't launch. Help?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?

My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick

I am getting help migrating everything else on to the new harddrive, but since copying the 350Gb Aperture library takes a lot of time, I am planning to do that part myself.

How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
Mac1
Mac2
MacBook1
MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Migration to new 3TB Time Machine/Time Capsule?

From an earlier posting, I think A Silverstone asked for a step-by-step procedure.
I have a similar issue I would like a procedure(s) on. Actually two identical issues.
1. I wish to purchase Apples new 3TB tower Airport/Time Machine to replace a 1TB Airport extreme/Time Machine. I want to migrate the old to the new using Apple processes/procedures without a lot of workaround. How can this be done? Does Apple have a procedure?
2. I have a desktop with four drives (three 2TB & one 1TB) and wish at least two of them to be Time Machine capable, i.e., backup every hour like the Airport/Time Machine does. Can this be done? Does Apple have a procedure?
I want to migrate the old Time Capsule data to the new Time Capsule and to two HD's in the desktop.
The idea is to have backups for a Time Machine backup in the event of a power disruption or a hacker that might impact the tower Time Machine. There are other reasons such as storage capacity using a daisy chain process.
One main problem is capturing the old "sparsebundle" in such a way to get it into the new unit and on to internal HD's. How to do this is the question.

You can also use Disk Utility's Restore tab, which is often faster and less prone to errors. Note it will format the new drive.

How do I get older backups off my Time Machine?

Hi! I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

If you are only looking to get certain data off of your Time Machine backups you would not want to use Migration Assistant. You would instead enter the Time Machine menu and select the file(s) you would like to recover. Please use the following article for the steps needed and as a resource.

Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu. The restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time. The timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive. If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Lion v10.7 and later, portable Macs include local snapshots.
You can also perform a Spotlight search from the Finder. Simply enter a search term in the Spotlight search field, and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder. If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.

Backup system to Time Machine then Install Snow Leopard

I tried upgrading to 10.4.8 but snow leopard wouldn't install as it said "Time Machine" installed on drive. I checked preferences in "Time Machine" and it is set to backup to an external "G" drive, not my Mac HD. What gives?
I'm willing to backup everything to "Time Machine" then format the hard disk and do a completely "clean" installation of "Snow Leopard". I'm just scared I won't be able to put everything back on Snow like I had it on the old OS X. Can someone tell me how to upgrade above or how to restore my "Time Machine" backup after I do a new install.

Most likely, there's a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of your HD. Hopefully, it's empty. If so, just delete it. If not, see how big it is and post back.

Why do you want to erase and reinstall everything? That's almost never required, or even helpful, on a Mac.
All you have to do is insert the SL disc and follow the instructions. It will install itself and delete Leopard, without touching your data. Takes about 45 minutes or so.

HT201250 Backup too large & time machine not backed up for over a year.

Today I got this message:
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 188.89 GB but only 73.07 GB are available.
Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.
Then when I go to preferences it said
73.1 GB of 320 GB available

I was under the impression I had been backing up everyday and today was the first day I go the warning the backup was too large. Why is it that I have not had a back up for over a year? That worries me. I had a HD crash just over a year ago and the time machine saved my life. I thought everything was back to normal once I had my new HD installed, but wondering if that was the last back up it ever did for some reason.
Any suggestions? I am going out to get a new external HD of 1TB and hoping all will start backing up again.

I recently bought a WD My Book Live to backup using Time Machine, now that I've upgraded to and my old NAS won't support Mountain Lion. The WD drive appears in the Finder, it doesn't appear as an option when setting up the backup disc in Time Machine.

Do you have a few words missing in the original question ?.
When i upgraded from LION to MOUNTAIN LION it made NO difference at all to my MyBook Live !!!
reading the original post again and again, do you in fact have two My Book Live units, an old one and a new one ?

Backup Drive for Time Machine FILLS UP FAST!

*Be forewarned!*
I have a new iMac 2.8 GHz with an internal 750GB drive (about 500GB free). I bought a 500GB external drive (Western Digital Book My Book™), and after just 4 days of running with Time Machine turned on, I get this error message, "Time Machine backup failed. Time Machine needs 175GB to backup, and only 150GB available." Huh?
I just spoke to someone at the Apple Store's Genius bar, and they recommend a backup drive that is twice the size of your internal drive. (which means a 1.5 TB drive: not cheap...LaCie costs $539)
Also, come to find out some programs simply "don't play nice" with Time Machine. A good example is MS-Entourage, which has a single database file (in the Main Identity folder) which holds all the info for your email, address book and calendar. Mine is 350 MB in size, and it is being backed up IN FULL every hour because, well...I use my email. And every time any changes are made to that single file, it is considered modified, which means it is backed up every hour on the hour, which can quickly add up.
The same is true for the Windows XP or Vista VM files created by Parallels or VMware Fusion. Each are single, 2+ GB files, and each time any change is made to this 'huge' file, it gets backed up repeatedly by Leopard's Time Machine.
_So the larger the backup drive for Time Machine the better_! I'm considering giving up on Entourage (kiss Microsoft goodbye!) and switching to Apple's excellent mail, address book and calendar programs!

I just switched from Entourage to Mail (for many reasons). Thus far, I love Mail. You may want to get the Widescreen plugin for it if you like the three-pane configuration of Entourage.
You should also be careful with Address Book if you have syncing set up in Entourage. In other words, probably should turn it off, along with any daemons you may have running. I lost data twice (once before my very eyes!) until figuring this out. Used Time Machine to restore a previous address book with all my contacts.
Thanks for the other information on this thread. Since I should be upgrading my old external drive anyway, it will help in purchasing a new machine for use with TM.

HT201250 i can't find my old backups on my time machine

hii guys..i lost my old backups on my time machine. all my new backups are working fine. i donno why. i have even spoken to apple customer care as well.
they said my old backups might have been deleted just to make space for new backup. but i did checked the box saying alert me when deleting old backups. can anyone help me how to get my old backups.
