New to Contribute

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm thinking Contribute may be my
answer. O.k. I have a client who has a small site and wants a CMS
to update content and a photo gallery. I'm a web designer very
familiar with Dreamweaver do I just create the site in DMW with
editable/non editable regions & then purchase Contribute and
upload it onto my clients machine???? Or do I upload it on my
machine, or do we both need to purchase it??? He will be the only
one editing the site once it's completed.

You build the site in Dreamweaver and upload the site files
to the webserver.
Then you install Contribute on your client's local computer,
establish a connection via Contribute to the webserver, and he can
then edit the website.
In theory you only need one copy of Contribute, for your
client's machine. However, if you also have your own copy you will
be able to understand the product better. It will also allow you to
create the Contribute Connection Key Files that can be e-mailed to
your client to allow them to create their connection. Otherwise,
they will have to go through the manual procedure for setting up a
Contribute connection (which involves them putting in the FTP
settings, although it's not that difficult).

  • The best option for new users: Contribute, database, or both?

    Hello Everyone,
    Background:
I told my mother I would help her build a website so she can sell her artwork online.  So we got CS4 Web Premium.  I have been studying how to use the software for several months now.  I am at the point where I made a good static website- all in .htm.  Now when learning about making forms functional I have come across .php and MySQL.  I am seeing the pros and cons of dynamic vs. static webpages, but I don't see them compared in a way that helps me decide which route to take.  The overall mandate from my mother is that she wants a website that she can sell her art, and that will be easy for her to update the site with new items for sale and news of upcoming gallery shows.  One important point is that she's a bit inept at computers and so it needs to be easy.
    Questions:
Can contribute be used for updating databases, or is it mainly/ony for .html files?
Not knocking her art, but I am thinking this will be a not heavily visited website- so are there still benefits in using MySQL?
Uploading images is an important point, is that a damning mark against MySQL?
Is it even possible to sell stuff when the items viewed are static?
I guess those are the big ones I have at the moment.
    Thanks for your time,
    Gregg

    Hi Gregg,
    1.  Contribute cannot be used to update databases.
    2.  I think it depends on how much artwork she has and how quickly it sells.  Or, in other words, how often she would need to update the information.
    3.  I've never tried putting images into a MySQL database so I don't know.
    4.  Yes.
You could probably teach your mom to update static web pages in Contribute.  Some of our web page editors are not very comfortable with computers, but they have found Contribute easy to use because it looks similar to Word and other word processing software.  So if your mom does any kind of word processing, she can probably learn to use Contribute.  However, if you think she'll have problems with it, then developing a simple php form for her to use to update a database should work.
As I said in my response to #2, whether you go with a database or Contribute (dynamic vs static) depends a lot on how much info you're dealing with.  If it's a couple of dozen pieces of artwork, static web pages may be the easiest solution.  But if it's in the hundreds, then a database is probably the way to go.
    I hope that helps.

  • New Install Contribute 4 won't run

I am doing some work from home for my boss. She gave me her
version of Contribute 4 to use so that I can update our website
whenever I have the time. I have tried 2 times to install the
software and run it. Both times, the installation wizard told me
that installation was successful, but neither time have I been able
to open the program to enter the serial number and get started. Any
    ideas?

Never mind. After 4 hours, I came back to my computer and it
    was running. How strange...

  • Contribute 4 wont forget index.htm

Hi, I'm troubleshooting a customer problem (I'm new to
Contribute, using v4). One of the three sites I am now
administering was not bringing up the correct home page due to
there being both an index.htm and an index.html page on the server.
I have removed the incorrect one (index.htm) from the server and
cannot get Contribute to forget it. I have tried:
    1. Deleting the connection and creating a new one, browsing
to the correct home page. Everything is OK until I open the
connection and I get a page not found error. If I add the
additional 'l' to index.htm, everything works OK.
    2. Change the order contribute looks for default pages on the
Web Server settings, moving index.htm below index.html. Contribute
ignores the order and still looks for index.htm.
    3. Deleted index.htm from the default pages list on the Web
Server settings. Contribute still looks for index.htm.
The other two sites were originally set up with index.html
pages and work fine. There must be a file, cache, or something
either on the site or on my workstation retaining this setting.
It's just annoying as I can show the customer how to get round it
but I'd like to fix it.

After making index.html as default pages list on the Web
    Server settings on Contribute.
Check in the server below mentioned things, where you are
    creating connection.
    1) Remotely login to the server.
    2) Go to Internet Information Services.
    3) Right click the default website and go to default website
    properties.
    4) Select the Documents tab.
    5) Here make the default page you want to keep.
And try the same scenario. Hope this helps you.

  • Can't publish because Contribute converts flash fragment into java error

    Hello Everyone,
    I'm new with Contribute.
We designed a website with a flash navigation, embedded as
    folows:
    head: <script src="../js/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
    type="text/javascript"></script>
    body: <script type="text/javascript">
    AC_FL_RunContent(
    'codebase','https://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab##version =7,0,19,0','width','480','height','800','src','../haborn_homeh=0&amp;s=0','quality','best' ,'pluginspage','
    http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer','movie','../haborn_home?h=0&amp;s=0'
    </script>
(just the standard way of diplaying flash without the active
    content message in explorer)
when i surf through the website in contribute, everyting goes
perfectly well, but when i edit the page, the flashfragment
disappears, and a javascript error occurs. the page then can be
published, but with an error so that the page can't be edited or
    viewed again.
is there a way to define regions that are not touchable by
contribute in dreamweaver, the same way that you can difine an
    editable region?
    Tnx for any help!

A workaround for this problem could be using a SSI (with PHP
f.i.). Contribute won't touch the includes, so your code should be
    save.

  • Correctly defining site in Dreamweaver to accomodate Contribute

I am getting ready to set up a new Dreamweaver site to work
with Contribute and am hoping to avoid the problem I have with my
current site. Right now, the site definition points to an
"off-line" copy of the site on a local network drive. I make all
page changes, template changes, etc. within that site. When I'm
ready to make the changes live, I tend to use Windows Explorer and
just copy from the site to the live server (I know that I could
just check 'automatically upload files to server on save" and avoid
this step ). However, Contribute is set up to connect directly to
the live site. It seems that was the only way to do it - otherwise
even when I (as Contribute Adminstrator) click "publish" for a
draft, it would only be published to the off-line site - and I
would still have to copy to the live server. But with the current
    set-up, there's a version mis-match as soon as I publish a
Contribute file, unless I immediately go and copy the updated page
from the live server back to the off-line site and that means that
some site changes will copy an old "off-line" version of a page
over a new, edited Contribute page.
How do I set up a site to ensure that I can still have an
off-line "work" environment, and yet not have to worry about
Contribute-edited pages? I do understand that I can define the site
as the "live" site - but then if I make site wide changes that
don't work, and blow something up - I don't have that back-up. It
just makes me nervous to work with the live files.
I've read (and am still reading) everything I can find about
setting up a site, and setting up a site to work with Contribute,
but this is still confusing me.
    thanks for any help.

    Have you ever used Dreamweaver?
How good are you with HTML and CSS code?
Go to Site > New Site and tell DW where on your hard drive you wish to keep your local site folder.
Enter your remote server FTP credentials.
From the Files Panel, Click on the Down Arrow to GET files from your remote web server.

  • Contribute CS4 ignores template changes?

First, I'm new to Contribute. I understand the general idea
of what it does and how it works, but I'm clearly out of my element
on how it works with template files.
I'm setup as an administrator on a Contribute CS4
installation on WinXP. I can edit and publish pages with no
    problems.
Except this: When I modify the template files for the site
(obtained from the server, modified, and replaced on the server),
the new modifications are not appearing in the newly-published
pages. I've verified that I'm working on the correct template for
the particular page, and I've even made sure to "refresh templates"
a couple times in case that worked. I've even gone so far as to
find the drafts of the pages I've been working on and make sure the
templates stored on my hard drive are properly updated (they are).
Am I wrong to expect Contribute to incorporate updates to the
template file? Am I being a complete bonehead and missing something
obvious (wouldn't be the first time)?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've just had to update 100+ template based pages on a
Contribute site. I ended up having to use Dreamweaver exclusively
    for the change.
Contribute does not seem to be "aware" of template updates
when you update a template based page. When you edit a page based
on a template that has changed, it doesn't apply the change or give
you any means of applying the change.
Also, when I attempted to use Modify-Templates-Update Current
Page on a page in Dreamweaver using the File-Actions-Edit Page
Source in External Application, Contribute went, well, berserk,
acting like I wanted to change dozens of pages and files in the
site. Lots of manual clean-up after that.
So, I just used only Dreamweaver to update all the pages
based on the template, as well as updating the template itself.
It's possible to "break" a Dreamweaver template by updating the
    template with another editor.

  • How to create a clickable video link in Contribute

I am new to Contribute and am trying to figure out how to do the following.  I have a video on my website and want to insert an image with a play button which will link to the video on my site.  The video is on an html page with swf embedded in it (created in Camtasia Studio).  I have no problem inserting the image I want and creating the link to the page where the video is, but I can't figure out how I can do it with a play button.
I tried to insert video and tried to insert swf, but neither gave me what I need.  How do I insert a play button on my image so when a person clicks the play button it links to my html page where the video automatically starts?  My video is also on YouTube so if that is an easier approach let me know although I would prefer linking to the video on my site, www.mbpros.com/premiumemreznotes.html.
    Steve

You can always take a screen shot of the video, add a play button (which really wouldn't be an actual play button) and link the image to your HTML page where the video is located.

  • How to create a form in Contribute

i'm new to contribute, i would like to create a
simple form to be filled out on our web page, and when they hit submit
it would be sent to my e-mail.
is any of this possible with contribute?  thank you

Short answer: no. You'd have to use some other software (Dreamweaver for example) to setup the form and the form management script.
Contribute is basically only good for one thing: editing existing pages within a Dreamweaver template environment.

  • Multiple connections for Contribute?

Well, we have a development server and a production server.
When they are done testing and developing we prefer that they still
update the development with the latest content in case of a server
problem with the production. The excuse in the past for not doing
this was that web curators are using Contribute and can't update
    that way.
My question is...is it possible for a web developer to
connect to two servers to update one website? IE they make the
changes and when they click publish...it updates both the site on
development and the production site. If not, why can't they just
update development and then update production? Do you have to order
some sort of connection key for each site?
I'm new to contribute so forgive me...

each server connection is independent so changes in a
connection can't and wouldn't affect another

  • How Many Contributes Are Needed?

Sorry, I'm new to Contribute, and I like the program itself,
but how does it work exactly? What I mean is, do I, as a Web
Designer, need to purchase a copy for each client who demands they
be able to edit content themselves? I know I can pass the cost on
to them, but is this the only way?
    Thanks.

since all the 3 tables are having packing_id as their link you would need 2 datablocks
    hope that helps

  • Contribute 4 connection issues

I have read all the other forums to try and fix my
problem. I stupidly tried to change something in the permissions on
our website using Contribute 4 and now I can't access it at all.
The FTP settings are good as I can access them using coffeecup. I
removed Contribute from the pc, reinstalled and tried to make a
connection to our website using the same access codes, password etc
and get to the remote pathway window on the connection wizard, it
comes up with the error " The server is unable to create a
directory. Please verify that you have sufficient permission to
create a directory." I am very frustrated with this system!!!!!!
PLEASE - can someone help me !!? Our website urgently needs
updating and I cannot get into it.

Maybe it's also wise to contact your ISP and ask if they
changes anything on the server that could be the cause of this.
What did you change in setting permissions? Are you referring
to the fact that you are working with an older version of
Contribute and changed permissions using a trial version of en
newer version Contribute? If you used a trial of CS3 to administer
a website managed by an older version of Contribute you have a
problem, after you administer a site in CS3 you cannot administer
that site anymore in the older version. Visit this post in
