New to Dreamweaver Old hand at Frontpage

This is what the help section says:
Edit an existing remote website in Dreamweaver
You can use Dreamweaver to copy an existing remote site (or
any branch of a remote site) to your local disk and edit it there,
even if you didn’t use Dreamweaver to create the original
site.
1. Create a local folder to contain the existing site and
set up the folder as the local folder for the site.
Note: You must locally duplicate the entire structure of the
relevant branch of the existing remote site
I get as far as here and have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what on
earth I am supposed to do next. Can anyone help, as I have now
spent 8 hours searching through piles of webpages and help pages to
try and work this out??? Pulling my hair out

You create a local folder, connect to your remote folder via
FTP, then
copy/download the files to it.
Do note that if your old site depended on Front Page
extensions, the
portions that depended on those extensions will not work
within Dreamweaver.

I am very new to dreamweaver MX and have only ever used
frontpage 2000. I just dont know where to start and was hoping for
some quick advice.
In frontpage you could see the navigation pages so you just
click on one or create a new page. It was very user friendly. I am
creating a very basic page so my first question is how do i create
a website? title it "my acting website" and start with an index
page with a template/title that will go on every page i create.
Do you recommend any tutorials? if there are any for creating
a basic website?

Have you looked at the Dreamweaver help files themselves ? F1
and do a
search for ' Templates'
You need to create a basic dreamweaver template, with all the
elements that
will be on every page and declare an editable (an area that
changes on every
page - eg: content area) . You then would create 'children'
pages from
this template.
A basic knowledge of html and css would be advantageous to
you also :)

Just used migration assistant from one mac to another one. When I restart the new mac, the old user boots up instead of my new user. Have to log out then log in.

Just got a new Imac. I migrated from the old Imac. When I boot the new Imac, the old user screen boots up. I have to log out and then log into my new user on the new mac. Whats up?

Thanks for your help. But the PowerBook has a Migration Assistant designed for the purpose of transfering files from the old Mac to the new Mac. The steps take me to the point where I'm instructed to restart the old Mac while holding down the "T" key. But nothing happens when I do that. It just restarts and the Migration Assistant on the new Mac still reads "waiting for old Mac to restart".
There has to be a way to do this. I can't install the original applications on the PowerBook from scratch because they were meant to run on Classic. The PowerBook doesn't recognize any of the old Classic installation disks I have from previous Macs (Oddly, the PowerBook has capability to run Classic, but not the actual software-- and no Classic installation disk was provided, unlike the software provided for iBooks. And I can't install any of the System X upgrades because they need to recognize the original application already on the computer in order to upgrade.
I just calculated that if I have to rebuy all the applications I need, I couldn't afford to do it (unless someone can-- or even wants to-- take the old versions off my hands to offset the cost of buying new ones).
There must thousands of graphic designers like me who run a small business and can't afford to re-stock their entire software collection every time they upgrade to a new computer. Why would Apple diss the very people who have been supporting the company (actually keeping it alive) all these years? I don't think they would do that. I'll just have to keep looking for a solution.

New to Dreamweaver (CS5) trying to set up a secret access code (not a login)

I am new to dreamweaver and I've done a bit of searching and can't find answers for this specific question.
I am going to be handing out about 250 marketing pieces with individualized "access codes". Each code will be individualized. So for example one code might be "#X251" another "RQ457" etc..
I am not interested in a login/password combination. The user will know the site they are going to, but when they click a certain area of that site, it will ask for this individualized code and then they are "granted access". If they do not have a code then "access is denied". Each person essential has their own unique "access code"
I will continue to search but so far everything i've seen in my searches requires a "username/password" combination which doesn't work with what I am trying to achieve.
Again my dreamweaver skills are novice at best. I can read html to some degree and do have a few resources i can tap but I am really looking for some direction down the right path to achieve this.
Any help is much appreciated!

When they enter the code it presents the same content to everyone. I like the idea of the database as this would allow for easier expansion as well if I decided to add more unique codes later. Again i'm totally new and I will need to research some of the keywords you noted, but I think i'm on the right path.

Got my big new hard drives in hand - Now, what don't I know?

Got my big new hard drives in hand - Now what?
Have 2 old iMacs that I need to upgrade with bigger HDD’s and then upgrade the OS. I am experienced with hard and software upgrades since MacSE days (got all the tutorials marked) but not so much with recent OS10 permutations. Certain that all this has been posted here numerous times, but quite tired of searching for it after a couple hours and have probably unnecessarilly confused and frightened myself in sorting through the scary posts. Perhaps its all in an FAQ at another site?
1. M9290LL/A G4 iMac 20” 1.25 Ghz 2GB RAM OS10.3.9
2. M9845LL/A G5 iMac 20” ALS 2.0 Ghz 2GB RAM OS10.4.11
Presuming that I would clean up the existing internal HDDs, install the new drives (1TB & 500GB) in their appropriate external enclosures, initialize them with the apropriate HFS (know I saw that here somewhere), drag and drop the existing internal HDD onto the new external drive, boot from the external HDD for an appropriate test period (all 5 family users) and only then install the new drives in the iMacs.
With the files and user settings safely backed up on the old HDDs in the external enclosures, I can safely attempt OS upgrading. Already have family packs of newer OS versions, just never desired the weeklong headache of reconfigging 5 users and the typical screaming lost settings sessions.
I am not looking at a clean system and software install because of all the user settings. We have a fortune in legacy PowerPC software, some of which never worked right on the G5 with 10.4, but Safari for 10.3 is now very unstable and I have printers with no 10.3 drivers available.
Questions:
1.What should I do to clean up the existing HDDs prior to copying over besides running Disk Utility. Didn’t Disk Utility. used to include a de-frag function? Hopefully there is shareware and this doesn’t require a $100 software suite.
2. Do I need special cloning software due to windows-like traps in OS10 or can I just copy the entire old drive, sludge and all?
3.What are the ultimate OS10 versions for these machines;
at what point am I installing lots of Intel code that simply slows these machines down or kludges up the legacy software?
4. What else did I forget to ask? What would the pros at my local mac shop charge me fortune to do?

The prevailing answer to my posts is that I should either attempt a clean install and migration over using SD to clone copy the existing internal drive.
How good is the current migration experience? I've been doing OS upgrades since Mac SE days and never had a clean one in my life. Always lost the whole email folder or all the bookmarks or the address book files or the entire iTunes library or something that resulted in long hours of cursing and frustration. And that was with a single user.
And I know that these units will boot and be functional with upgrades to 10.4 and/or10.5. Unanswered is whether these computers will work faster or slower and more or less reliably?
Am not concerned with OS9 apps; have a couple old CRT iMac doorstops if the kids are overcome with a wave of nostalgia for Marathon or Pod Racer.
Does this or any other site maintain a master list of 10.4 / 10.5 software version compatibilty, or do I have to track down 50 different vendors' current websites?

New to Dreamweaver need to put up new website

Hello I am new to dreamweaver. I have figured out how to put together a gallery and connected all the pages. I have a root file with everything in it and then some. I have tested the server now I want to put it online what are the key steps. I tried downloading every thing to my server and all I get is index files for public view. Not what I want to show to say the least. I am a professioanl photographer and this isn't very professioanl need help immediately. I am putting back my old one until resolved. I have used an old program that microsoft had and was very beginner friendly but want a more professional look etc. That is why I chose Dreamweaver. Please help!!!

I would have to recommend that you give David's tutorial a quick read over. He has a very good step-by-step process for publishing your site. Some of the information required for that tutorial will be provided by your web hosting provider such as FTP connection information.

Forums need old hands to make them work so why hack them off?

The whole principle of a forum like this is that those who need help (experienced and inexperienced alike) go to those old hands who can sort things out.
Why, then, has Apple made so many poor, untested changes hacking off so many of the old hands on whom this community relies? Making changes to allegedly attract the newcomers while driving away the old hands is like inviting 10,000,000 people to shop at your supermarket while getting rid of the shelf stackers. There will soon be nothing to buy.
I can't imagine the Logic forum without iSchwartz and his like. Apple - get your QA team on overtime to sort out the immediate problems. Get your design team on steroids and your coding team on {insert your preferred high-octane drink here}.

We don't really know why Apple has made the changes. What we do know is that several recent sets of changes have been very disruptive until they have been sorted out & made to work as (we assume) they were intended to work.
I think this is mostly what angers the regulars, not necessarily the changes themselves. Looking at the list of gripes, most of them seem to be about implementation issues, like missing 'new' dots, blank line anomalies, badly labeled buttons, & so on. Adding to this is the surprise factor: we don't know what the changes are until they are implemented, or what they will do to the appearance of posts.
I'm sure I'm not alone in having become very skeptical that announced (or more frequently, discovered) "updates" of Discussions will disrupt things for the no more than the scheduled period; usually promised to be 4 hours or so but now realistically more like 2-4 days.
So, IMO the solution is to give us not just a warning on the Discussions main page that changes will be made but to tell us in some detail what to expect once things are working right. After all, how hard would it be to say that smilies/emoticons will be rendered as icons, quotes will be boxed, etc. once the changes are complete? Better, how about accompanying that with a guide that explains their use, or furnishing a link to one?
It is not like these are trade secrets Apple needs to protect to prevent competitors from gaining a marketing advantage! One hopes the intent is to make Discussions easier to use & more friendly. Having to guess what's going to happen or how to use it does not serve that goal, no matter what spin you put on it.
I think the ideal way to distribute this is not just in the Discussions main page announcements area -- I suspect I am not alone in infrequently visiting that page, since I usually go directly to posts from links in subscriptions emails or the "My Subscriptions" link. With this in mind, why not email the notification & additional info to all subscribers to any Discussions topic or forum? At least this way, users have a way to get the info once Discussions goes down for the changes.
Failing that, at least put up a link in the Support main pages that doesn't depend on discussions.apple.com being up to let us know what's going on. The "We're sorry ..." message is of no help at all.

New to Dreamweaver CS5, from FP2003

HELP! I'm new to Dreamweaver CS5, still learning my way around. I have an existing site built with FrontPage 2003, which I have imported and have played around with through DW.
However, I'm lost without my WYSIWYG editing options. I've read through the forums and obviously I'll need to rebuild my forms and my shared borders, but HOW, exactly? I'm somewhat familiar with HTML, but not as much with CSS...
Any tips and step-by-step advice is greatly appreciated!

I think you will have a big job ahead of you. DW is about as different from FP as it's possible to be, both in terms of general approach to using it and in terms of the quality of output. Do you have the space to spend a few weeks learning HTML and CSS before starting to work on this?

The only way to keep the photos would be to upload them somewhere and then redownload them once you set the iPad up for the new owner.
Apps aren't tied to a device. they're tied to the Apple ID, so when you set it up for the new owner and they put their ID on there, they'll have to start over with their apps.

Did you try deleting the mail account, then adding it back? I've read a lot of times that is what needs to happen in order for it to work properly.

You will need to do this via iTunes to start with as you need to copy your iTunes files to the new computer.
If you have everything on your iPad you can select "transfer purchases..." when plugging your iPad into your new computer and in iTunes (right/ctrl click the iPad icon) after telling iTunes to not sync this iPad.
Once the items are in the new iTunes then when it asks if you wish to sync to this new iTunes your items will be copied to the iPad again.
However if you do not have all iTunes items on your iPad, then you will need to follow the instructions on to move iTunes first, then deal with your iPad.

The songs all played on my old computer without prompting me for a password.
Any ideas how I can get around this hassle and get them all to play? We're talking about 800 songs that are being obstinate. The new computer is authorized under my "new" Apple id, which I have used for years.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

New to Dreamweaver and need help with fomatting font

Hi, I am new to dreamweaver and have been playing with it for a few weeks. I have Dreamweaver CS5.5 and I am making some detailed html templates for my ebay listings. I have created my tables, graphics, and colors but I am having trouble with my font formatting. Everything is looking really good, but there are a few sentences and even just a few phrases that I want to underline but when I add a text decloration and underline, it just underlines the whole area of sentenses not the specific one that I highlited. I know how to create a h1, h2, h3 etc code and add underline to it, but I don't want to have to format a h1 or h2 tag everything I want to format a little line. The reason I have been doing this is because It really is one of the only ways I have been able to figure out how to underline something. I watched some tutorials which is how I learned this. I figured out in the properties Panel on bottom of page to click on the CSS rule to create certain codes and such, but I am not sure how to do this. I tried one thing which was where it says target rule, I clicked new CSS Rule and then in then in the CSS Styles Panel on right side of screen I selected add property which I was then able to do a text decloration and underline, but it underlines many more sentenses than I am wanting or have selected. Please help so I am able to specifically choose how to underline just a word or two, and even to have just a word or two specifiaclly be a certain font, size or color. I am able to find ways to make this work on words as a whole, but not individual words or phrases.

Bear in mind that an underlined word or phrase on the web means a clickable link to most people.
So, if you want to draw attention to something on screen, use anything (font size, color etc) except for an underline.
text-decoration: underline; is only used in CSS for styling clickable links. Not for regular text.
One option is to use the HTML tag combined with CSS.

I also purchased several new songs from the itunes stores. Now my ipod will not sync with the new computer. I deauthorized all computers, then reauthorozed the new one. My ipod still won't sync.

...after running diagnostics through itunes, itunes says "device not found" Seems there are a lot of others having this problem,and it seems to be related to new version of itunes. Apple should do something to fix this.
