New To Final Cut

So I just installed final cut studio, but since i don't have much room on my hard drive I chose to only install Final Cut Pro and nothing else to save space. Later i learned that i could choose to import the only the applications which cut the install from 50+ gigs down to about 3 so i installed the rest of the applications without content. I had already started my project which was in AVCHD format so it was using the 6.02 update. However after i installed the other programs it reverted to the original 6.00 version and I now cannot work on my project. What should I do?

I removed the whole studio and reinstalled it and used the apple --> software updates to update all the programs in the studio and it says that it installed the 6.03 update, which i assume includes 6.02. However when i open the program it shows that the version is still 6.00 and it won't open the project that i previously created because it is "too new for this version". Anyone have any ideas? I really need to be able to work with AVCHD files.

I am new to Final Cut Express and don't understand why I am unable to drag transitions into Canvas? Something wrong in my setup? It's not the overlays they are "on" so can anyone advise me please, by the way the "L" doesn't appear in the bottom left hand corner either? and by the way how can I get rid of that irritating Blue badge saying "AutoFill your contact details" all mine are in "address book" already!

You can't drag a transition into the canvas. If you're dragginmg a transition from the effects tab you drag it between the edit point of two clips in the timeline.
Make sure show edit overlays is turned on in the Canvas view popup.

  • New to Final Cut Pro Need some Advice

Hi, I am totally new to Final Cut (never used it before). However, I am deciding wether to take on a video project and this will be based on the expert advise I receive here. The project is to video tape a 2 day conference (14 hrs of taping) and edit it down to about 3 hrs (I have never done any form of video editing before). I did some research and found Final Cut Studio 2 that will do some of things I would like for the editing. However, I have spoken to a couple of people (not experts) and I have been warned to stay away from Final cut. I was told it is not a program I can learn in a month or 2 and I would need extensive experience to use the program effectively. I was told that Imovie would work just as good as Final Cut( I can't see how so). So the questions I have are:
    1. Are there any reccommendations for Books that will guide me through the use fo Final Cut
    2. Should I heed to the advise of the non-experts?. Thanks!

Take into account various point of views and keep in mind especially the advice of experts!
I don't know what exactly you would like FCP to do for you however you need to know how to use it indeed in order to achieve certain goals! if you are really determined and focused AND consistent in learning it you could master the basics in less time than you think.
You gotta believe in your capabilities!
I think you should give particular attention to how shortlist the shots you need and accurately LOG&CAPTURE them. Learn how to edit with simplicity and keeping project tidy both in the browser and in the sequence rather than spending time in fancy transitions etc.
Read a lot about codecs, compression and exports and also storage, data transfer!
You'll need to watch through the 14 hours before even opening FCP or another software and make sure that you select only what you really need. Write down on paper IN and OUT timecode for each shot you want in order to log all the shots after opening your application.

  • Project too new for final cut 6.0.2 error message

My colleague at work has edited a rough cut on her Quad Core Intel computer. I'm using a Power Mac G5, and was able to download the project onto my desktop, but I get this message every time I try to open it: "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut." We're both using FCP 6.0.2, I've done all the software updates I can, but I still receive the message. Does anyone know what I can do?

Did the person use the same workstation you are using? If you have the other person's volume mounted on your desktop, and you are definitely running the same OS, and you have the same version of FCP, then try opening the original file, not a copy. If it opens, do a *"save as"* instead of using a duplicated copy of the project.
Also, if they are using a different workstation, they may have another 3rd party component installed that they used, (maybe a filter or codec), that would interfere with it opening. The best way to make sure FibreJet works seemlessly in a multi-station work environment is to make absolutely sure that every station is a clone of the others. If you do an update on one, you have to do it on all. If you add an application, make sure you add it to all stations.
If you are using a different workstation, try to open it with the other station, then mount your desktop to that station through the LAN, and do a *"save as"* to your desktop, then try opening it from there.
Of course, do all this after trying to zip it before copying it. It only takes a second and would eliminate one aspect of the possible problem.

  • New MacBook Final Cut Studio More Detials.

Hi since my latest posts have not been very informational Than here is a complete new more detailed one.
    I have purchased a Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB
The SD9 records to a 8GB SDHC card
It can record Full HD 1920x1080/24p or 1920x1080/60i
It can record at 17mbps highest data rate so far.
It records for 1 hour at HA
    Has no FireWire.
    HDC-SD9-8GB: [Please Click Hear for more info|http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Cameras-Camcorders/Cam corders/Hi-Def-Camcorders/model.HDC-SD9-8GB110027000000000000005702|Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB]
I plan on purchasing the new MacBook. "Specs below"
    MacBook 3rd option
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    320GB Hard Drive
4GB ram "I know HD requires 4GB of ram"
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared main memory

Final Cut Studio And Shake 4.1
How well will Motion 3 work on the new MacBook with Apple Pro Res 422 in 1920x1080 60i and or 24p
How well will Final Cut Pro 6 work on the new MacBook with Apple Pro Res 422 in 1920x1080 60i and or 24p
How well will Shake 4.1 work on the new MacBook with Apple Pro Res 422 in 1920x1080 60i and or 24p
Each clip I usually take is only a few minutes long. Unless we have some Family thing than its about an hour but in that case I would be using Final Cut Pro 6 to maybe cut some things out but nothing big editing wise and DVD Studio Pro 4 or iDVD 08 to make a DVD for the Family.
I am not a payed professional.
I do not use firewire right now fore video intake or editing. I don't know how it applies at all. If i need the firewire for a scratch disk. Why not just make a partition on the internal drive and use it as the Scratch Disk.
Yes I know how to do a lot with these applications.
I only edit for fun and to learn more and more cool stuff.
I may one day start making Applications that is when I finally learn how to write code.
I may start off by making Dashboard Widgets.
I plan on getting the New Apple Display for some great at home editing on one nice big screen.
Apples site says on the MacBook pro.
Minimum graphics memory usage is 256MB. An additional 16MB is required when using an external display.
Does this also apply to the MacBook because on the MacBook site is does not say.
So will/should the New MacBook handle all of what I mentioned hear.

Note I am currently doing this on a MacBook with 2.4GHz processor with 160GB of hard disk space 2MB of ram 144 shared main memory Intel graphics card X1300 or something.
Motion works well but either quits or gets slow when analyzing a video in 1920x1080 24p.
Shake works great but analyzing slows down my MacBook until the process is done. With 1920x1080 24p
And Shake tends to cause my MacBook to get a little slow when rendering out file nodes.

  • Should I Bother Buying New iMac, Final Cut?

I currently own a seven-year-old G5 running 10.4.11. I'm using FCS and have been trying to upgrade to FCS2 since buying it several months ago, but it won't recognize the serial number from FCS, but that's not my problem/question.
I desperately need to buy a new(er) computer because I'm maxed out at 4GB of RAM, which just isn't cutting it any more. I've also begun shooting HD with a Panasonic HPX170. The camera creates MXF files that FCS is not able to import. I want to keep using Final Cut because I prefer it to Premiere Pro, but the news I've been reading about FCX is not encouraging.
If I buy the newest Studio version (prior to X), will it work on a new iMac? I just can't afford a Mac Pro right now, and I've heard the new iMacs scream, but it won't do me any good if I can't run Final Cut Pro on it, and I really don't want to use Premiere.
I also publish several magazines and use Adobe CS3 and 4, but those are less of a concern right now.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    >I've also begun shooting HD with a Panasonic HPX170. The camera creates MXF files that FCS is not able to import.
FCP 5.0.4, FCP 5.1 and up can import footage from that camera.  If you are running FCS, that means FCP 5.1.  The option for that is FILE>IMPORT>PANASONIC P2.  I have a workflow here:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow.php
FCP 5.1 TOTALLY supports that format.
    >If I buy the newest Studio version (prior to X), will it work on a new iMac?
FCS 2009...or FCS 3...totally.  Absolutely.  If you can find it. Apple pulled it, then re-released it if you called them direct.  But who knows if that is still happening.  The new iMac will run FCS 2, if you install Rosetta on it from a previous OS installer (custom install Rosetta).

  • New to Final Cut Pro, but not to Non Linear Editing

Hi my name is Rob and I am going to be a new Final Cut Pro owner here shortly. I have worked with various other Non Linear editing systems like SONY Vegas, AVID and Adobe Premiere Pro. So I am not new to the Non Linear style of editing video.
I got my first glimpse of FCP at my internship and loved it. Now my dream of owning a MAC and FCP are coming true.
I will be purchasing a Mac Pro with...
    - One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor
    - 2GB (2x1GB) RAM
    - 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s Harddrive
    - ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB Videocard
    - Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel), upgrading later to another 20".
And as you all know I will be getting Final Cut Pro with this purchase as well.
I just thought I would introduce myself to this part of the forum. As I will probably be here all the time. I have purchased the FCP 6 manual to get myself started.

You can call me Rob or S70 or heck even S. LOL, I would like Rob, but whatever.
I am a news editor. I edit Packages sometimes, but mainly VO's, SOT's, NATVO's the normal TV stuff. I edit with Adobe Premiere Pro at work and work from DVC PRO, BETA and even from our DVD archives and of course news wires.
I do not shoot. I may do my own shooting of random stuff, with the help of an old Digital MiniDV JVC camcorder.
I'd like to try and get my FCP skills up and maybe start freelancing and maybe even getting into my own production company or something like that.

  • I am new to Final Cut Pro, it is day 2.  I want to export my project to a DVD I follow the instructions but after preparing the media nothing happens.  What might be the problem

This is day 2 for me with Final Cut.  I now want to burn my project to a DVD.  After preparing the media nothing happens, there is no signal that there is any activity in any way.  What might be the problem?

  • Brand New To Final Cut Pro...

I was wondering why whenever I drag a clip to the timeline that it will have the red (unrendered) bar above it... If anybody can please explain to me. I would greatly appreciate your time and effort to help. Thanks very much in advance..

I actually just transferred the actual files. Here's the story. I have been filming my sons football games on the Sony camera. after each game I would transfer the files from the camera to my WD Passport drive to ensure I would have ample space on the camera. I have been editing on Sony Vegas which is a very very good program. I own several Macs and thought it might be a good idea to give FCP a try. So here I am with a new dual 3.2 8 core 4 gb ram 2 huge drives and a ton of files that I can't do anything with. Is there any way to utilize the files I have in FCP maintaining the HD quality? Any type of conversion software? I think I tried Streamclip and it didn't recognize the native MT2S format. Worst case scenario, I can install Windows XP Pro and Vegas via Boot Camp, but I really wanted to give FCP a try. I appreciate all help and suggestions. Thanks

  • New ti final cut

I'm an Avid editor learning FCP. I'm about to purchase the Macbook pro. I have FCP 4.5, but read it doesn't work on the new intel macs. How is FCP 6 currently running? As well, will the entry lowest priced macbook Pro be enough to run FCP 6?
Thanks for the input, any other ideas would be helpful

You may be able to use FCP4.5 on your MBP.
When you launch it you will get an error message. Click the "esc" key and FCP should open and work, though it may not be as fast as normal because it is passing through Rosetta.

  • Capture problems for new Final Cut user

I'm new to final cut, just switching from pc...got a brand new mac pro, fresh install of final cut studio. I am capturing hdv tapes from a Sony FX1 using capture now so that the clips are broken up. It captures perfectly except for the long clip, which is about 40 minutes long. I've gone back to capture it alone and get an unknown capture error after I hit escape to end the capture. There is plenty of room on the hard drive and the ckeckbox in system settings for limiting capture now to 30 minutes is not checked. Any ideas?

Are you capturing using HDV, ProRes, or SD via i.Link Conversion? I also have a Sony FX1, and capturing long clips is only an issue when my hard drives can't keep up or if there is an issue with the tape. Sometimes the tape can have issues and will disrupt your capture. Definitely set your capture scratch to an internal drive if you can and don't capture to your boot drive if possible. If you only have one drive, fork over the 100 bucks and get a 750 gig drive or even two or three and raid them together. You'll be happier if you do.

  • Video out of sync in Final Cut Express... but in sync everywhere else!

'm working on making one video that is composed of two camera angles of the same thing. So, I have two video tracks in Final Cut Express, one for the side view, and one for the main view. Both videos are Quicktime Movies (.mov extension).
    Here are the file details:
    Main Cam: duration - 1hr 26min 46sec // file size - 5.74gb
    Side Cam: duration - 1hr 29min 18sec // file size - 5.63gb
[the side cam video is a little longer because I started filming with that camera a little bit before the main cam and stopped the filming a little earlier]
Now, here's the problem. Both videos are in my Final Cut Express project. The Main Cam video runs fine. But the Side Cam video's video is out of sync with the audio by a lot (somewhere between 2 and 6 full seconds). Normally I would think that something had happened during the filming, but here's the odd thing: the Side Cam video plays perfectly in sync out of Final Cut Express.
If I open it in Quicktime, or even in iMovie, the audio and video are perfectly in sync for the entirely of the video. But when I import it into FCE and watch it there, whether it's in the timeline, in the viewer, rendered, or unrendered (I've tried them all), it's horribly out of sync.
So, the video plays fine and in sync everwhere except for in the Final Cut Express program. The Main Cam video, which has a very similar duration and file size and which is the same file type, plays perfectly even in FCE. The only problem is the Side Cam, and I can't figure out why this is, or how to fix it.
Another thing: these videos were not captured from a camera into Final Cut. I already have the video files on the computer, and as I've said, the audio is fine there. To get them into FCE, I use file -> import.
Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to fix this, could you provide directions of some sort? I'm fairly new to Final Cut.
Any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Does both camcorders was set to 16-48 khz audio?
One way to synch audio that drifting from video (or from anoter audio lenght) is to set precisely 2 markers (one near the beginning, another near the end) in the correct lenght video track. Try to find spots where you can hear and see a common reference. The result of the workaround will put a corrected audios between those points only.
Now note the duration between those 2 markers in video track.
*Unlink the video/audio clip with the wrong duration.*
Select the drifting audio and put the 2 markers at the intended reference points.
The duration should be less or more than the video.
Use the blade tool to cut the wrong lenght audio at markers.
The tips is to set a new duration for this portion with the set speed command.
With this +new duration+, align the in point of audio with the first video marker. The out point of audio should be aligned with the second video marker.
Now the audio should match the video lenght and should be in synch.

  • How to work efficiently with HDV footage in Final Cut Pro 6

Hello everyone! I am fairly new to Final Cut & Mac. I have worked with Final Cut Pro 5 on my Powerbook G4 two years ago. But when I moved to HD, I switched to a PC with Adobe Premiere. Recently, I made the move back to Final Cut as I had problem with the stability of both Premiere 2.0 and CS3. I am really happy with it so far. In Premiere, I used the Cineform codec which performed very well. I also got a license for their MAC codec but unfortunately, I still have to capture under Windows.
Since I have not worked with HDV on the Mac before, I have a few questions which I hope people on these boards can answer.
    1) How does Final Cut Pro 6 handle native HDV?
    2) Is it beneficial to convert to Pro Res 422 (in terms of quality, but also in terms of editing speed, rendering time, in favor of processing speed etc.)
    3) Which Pro Res 422 setting is advised? I will be capturing HDV through firewire and then recompress to Pro Res 422. The Canon XL-H1 squeezes 1080i into 1440x1080. So I figured I need the 1440x1080 setting. There are two options: normal and (HQ). The HQ files are around 4-times bigger then the native HDV file. The normal setting results in files around 2-times bigger. Coming from HDV, do I see the difference between normal and HQ?
    4) What systems are recommended so I can work efficiently? i.e. how to setup the scratch disks. I currently have the applications installed on Disk 1, all scratch disks on Disk 2 + 3 (RAID 0) and final results on Disk 4.
I have the following system setup:
    - Apple Mac Pro Quad-Core (2.66Ghz)
    - 5GB of RAM
    - ATI X1900XT 512MB
    - Harddisks:
    -1- Western Digital 750GB SE
    -2- Western Digital 500GB RE2 (member of "VIDEO" - raid 0)
    -3- Western Digital 500GB RE2 (member of "VIDEO" - raid 0)
    -4- Western Digital 500GB SE
    - Two Dell 2407 FWP 24" LCD monitors
Thanks for your help and don't feel obliged to answer all questions, I am already happy if one of them is answered!!

    1) How does Final Cut Pro 6 handle native HDV?
    Just like FC5.... no worries
    2) Is it beneficial to convert to Pro Res 422
Just like the Cineform codec you will benefit from an all i-frame codec when working with titles and graphics. I wouldn't recommend capturing native then converting to ProRez as this will take an extremely long time. Many have found editing native up until the compositing then dropping the sequence into a ProRez timeline to render. I prefer to uncompress the HDV with hardware into a capture card and transcode on capture in real time. Depending on the flavor of HDV and the equipment you use you can probably find a method for this. I shoot run & gun field work on to tape, then with the deck I can export via HDMI and together with another product from Convergent Design it is converted to HD-SDI in the a Kona LHe into FC. The benefit for me is the all digital decompression from 1440x1080 4:2:0 to a 1920x1080 4:2:2 uncompressed HD-SDI signal to use anyway I need to. As to which level of PR I can't comment but I have used the lower level and it looks great. As to raid setup I can recommend www.maxupgrades.com to help you add two - four more drives internally for unbelievable speed and expanded storage space you will want. The owner (Syed) will give you all the support you need to take advantage of the Mac Pro capabilities for a low cost high performance raid solution. Sounds like you have a great setup in mind, you may want to look into the Kona LHe capture card for capturing and monitoring and a Convergent Design product like the HD-Connect SI or MI depending on the deck you are using. If you need broadcast quality monitoring look into the Matrox MXO.
    Good Luck
