New to FIOS

Hi all,
Just had FIOS installed yesterday and for the most part, I really like it.  I've been a DISH customer for over 10 years but the triple play package I was offered was too good to pass up, so I made the change.  I'll be reasding more in the fourms but one thing I noticed and was dissappointed by was getting the NHL Center Ice package and then seeing that the feeds, except for the NHL HD channel, are all in SD.  DISH's feeds were all in HD so I was wondering if anyone could commnet on how quickly FIOS upgrades channels to HD?  Also, I found it irritating to see you could only make two Favorite lists while DISH let me make 4 I think.  With so many channels, that seems like a strange limitation to me and I was wondering if more had been requested by FIOS customers to better manage sets of channels?
Thanks

  • New to FiOS, can I use my own modem and router

I saw several questions similar to mine, but none that I saw answered my question for my scenario. I am sorry if this is a duplicate. I am new to FiOS. I have no other services from Verizon and do not plan to get any. No phone, no television, nothing. Just Internet. God willing, the installation will take place in two days. My house already has coaxial cabling. I have my own cable modem, a SURFboard SB6121, which goes to my router, a TP Link TL-WR941ND. None of my equipment advertises that it is FiOS compatible. I've seen other people asking about using their own modem and router, but in those cases the scenario involved other bundled services, and I understand a FiOS router is necessary to forward ports to television, phone, and computers. However, in my very simple scenario, can the Verizon optical network terminal simply feed its output to my coax, from there to my modem, then router, then comptuers? Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Verizon technical support just gave me a machine that wanted to help me troubleshoot my Internet connection, and I couldn't get from there to a human. Thanks in advance for the help!

Banish the word and the device called "modem" from your home when using FiOS.  FiOS does not use modems.  Your cable modem is useless with FiOS.  Do not plug it in. FiOS uses routers.  The router connects to the ONT's WAN port using MoCA (coax) or Ethernet.  The installer will enable one of the ONT's WAN ports.  If you order 150Mbps or higher speeds, they will have to use Ethernet.  For slower speeds, coax is the default.  Many installers will use Ethernet if you ask nicely, but usually only if it isn't too much work.  Make sure it's easy to connect a router to the ONT using Ethernet, and you should be okay.  If Ethernet needs to be run through the walls, your best choice is get it done ahead of time.  You can always call later and get the ONT's WAN port switched. The only routers available with a MoCA WAN port are the Verizon models.  The Verizon routers are good devices for most users.  People who like to tweak their networking gear don't like them as many advanced features are limited or locked down.  You can't run any other router firmware on them.  WiFi range is decent, but not great.  I'm quite happy with my Quantum router.  YMMV. If you get Ethernet WAN enabled, you can use any router you want.  However, know that Verizon provides zero support for any other router.  They won't even mention it as an option.  That doesn't mean you can't use one, simply that you must do so without Verizon's help. There are reports that they won't even complete an install without one of their routers to verify service.  If you don't use one of their routers, consider renting one for a month to complete the install or even buying a used one.  If you own a Verizon router, you can install it if you ever suspect Verizon networking issues.  This will allow you to call their support. This FAQ is very helpful:http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 Good Luck.

  • A Few Quick Tips For Those Who Are New To Fios Quantum and the New Quantum Update

Most of those who have quantum received the new update early this morning (8/12/14)
There are a lot of people that are new to fios who never had anything prior to quantum so I thought I'd make this post to help.
Those who had the older boxes prior to quantum should already know about all of this.
The new update now reflects what the older stb/dr's have and have had for awhile now. There are now more menu settings you will want to go through.
The ad banner guide at the bottom can be disabled. Go to menu > Notifications > Guide Banner > set to disable
The banner will still be there, but will show Verizon rather then ads.
The home screen can be turned off. There is an option to turn it off within the home screen or you can go to menu > Notifications > Promotions > set to disable
The led on the boxes have been changed. If you want to change it go to menu > System > Media Server Settings > LED Brightness.
The Auto Power Off option is set to 4 hours by default. If you don't want the box to turn off automatically you will want to disable this. Menu > System > Media Server Settings > Auto Power Off > set to none
There is now the option to change the guides banners times outs. Menu > Settings > System > Television > Info Bar Time Out (also Channel Bar Timeout)
Some on other forums mentioned the video formats have been changed so its a good idea to check the option out to see if it reflects what you want. Menu > Settings > Audio & Video > Video Settings > Video Format
The aspect # button now works so any SD channels that are boxed can now be stretched using the # button.
I'm happy to see this option back.
    Solved!

Thanks for the info regarding the latest update. I like some of the new/improved options, however I am highly disappointed that the update discontinued the reminder option. I would think that setting a program reminder is a highly used feature and many will be unhappy now that it is gone. I know I surely am!

  • Airport Express/AirTunes Not Working with New Verizon FIOS Connection

I was just set up with the new Verizon FIOS high speed internet, and now my Airport Express/AirTunes will not connect to my remote speakers like it did previously. The option for them is still there on iTunes, however when I select them, I get the horizontal barber pole for a minute, then the speaker selction goes back to computer.
    In more detail:
Previously I had a Comcast internet connection which went through a Linksys wireless router. My Mini picked up the internet with this connection. Then I had an Airport Express hooked up to some remote speakers. They worked fine. Now, I have the Verizon wireless router hooked in directly to my Mini through the ethernet cable. I see the wireless network created by the Verizon router. I still see the wireless network created by the Linksys router. However, my iTunes can not connect to my AE/AirTunes speakers.
Note, I did reset the AE and then using Airport Setup Assistant, tried to locate it again, but it came up with nothing (other than my neighbor's new Verizon router).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Still no luck. The green light is on for the AE.
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • [NEWS] Verizon FiOS Skyrockets to #1 in Netflix ISP Streaming Rankings

Congrats FiOS.   Maybe it was worth the wait, maybe it wasn't. But it, according to Netflix and it's subscribers, was well executed.
     <blockquote>
[NEWS] Verizon FiOS Skyrockets to #1 in Netflix ISP Streaming Rankings
Netflix's latest ISP streaming performance rankings continues to show specific and pointed improvements for companies that have struck interconnection deals with the company
Verizon FiOS jumped nine spots to top the index with a speed of 3.17 Megabits per second (Mbps.) The rapid rise, which began last month, followed an interconnection agreement with the company that uncongested ports for mutual customers. Similar arrangements with Time Warner Cable and AT&T U-Verse also resulted in increased speeds in September of 2.87 Mbps and 2.77 Mbps respectively.
The improvements were enough to propel Verizon FiOS to the top among the nation's largest ISPs at 3.17 Mbps per second. Among all ISPs, Verizon FiOS comes in seventh place behind Google Fiber (3.54 Mbps), Grande Communications (3.33 Mbps) and RCN (3.24). It's worth noting while jumping just one spot, Verizon DSL customers continue to see the slowest streaming performance of nearly all ISPs ranked, including other DSL providers.
Again, you can head here to see the ranking of all ISPs in the US or other countries where Netflix streaming is available.

In short, I've seen a big improvement that makes watching Netflix on FiOS enjoyable!
    Enjoy.

  • New to FIOS with several video issues

I switched to FIOS from Comcast four days ago and now have several intermittent video and guide issues I never experienced with Comcast. I've read many posts about the new firmware (1.7) which is rolling out this month, and was hoping to get some clarification on whether these issues are addressed with the update. Sorry if I am re-hashing issues already discussed,  but I just want to be sure I'm dealing with the same problems as everyone else. The 2 STBs I have are the 7216 and the 7100. Both are connected via HDMI and both are v. 1.6.2.
    Issues on both STBs
    - Video and audio drops out for a second on HD channels, just a black screen. This occurs sometimes when switching to another channel, and usually does not recover unless I switch to another channel then back to it.
    - When switching channels, the channel does not change, even though info bar does change and shows the desired channel (if I switch back and forth between channels it will eventually switch correctly. This issue can occur using the Channel up-down button, the "Last" button, or using the number keypad.) Also, the opposite sometimes occurs - the channel changes, but the info bar takes several seconds to catch up.
    DVR (7216) only issues
    - Pixelation when trying to rewind live video (video remains live but corruption occurs llike it is trying to rewind) . Going to another channel and then back usually makes normal rewinding possible.
    - Signal drops when playing a recorded program (no audio and snow for a second or two). However, it is not the recording itself since it does not occur in the same place if you rewind the recording and play it again. This is almost the same kind of drop mentioned above, but there is snow instead of a blank screen.
I'm debating on going back to Comcast. I love the FIOS features, the extra HD channels, and the deal I got with Verizon, but it is all useless without stable performance.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. -Mike

Update: Switched from hdmi to component cables and this seems to have corrected the video and audio drops both on live TV and DVR playback. No noticable difference in picture quality. Still sometimes get a very short skip, especially the audio right after changing channels, but nothing significant and no more than what I experienced with Comcast (probably would not have even noticed if I didn't experience the bigger problem).
Still experiencing the same intermittent bugs when changing channels. The 7216 STB doesn't always change channels, although the info bar reflects the switch. The 7100 is the opposite - channel changes but info bar has long delay. Also on the 7216, still have issues backing up live video. It appears that the buffer becomes corrupt now and then. Could just be a bad drive which may be causing the channel changing issue as well. Resetting the STBs and router had no effect.
I should be getting 1.7 update soon and will see if this corrects any of these issues. I will also switch back to HDMI after the update and will post my findings
Most of what you described are supposed to be fixed with 1.7. And as you saw most of it was fixed by switching to the component cables. Those items that are fixed by this are the ones that are being focused on with the 1.7
However, the problem with the info bar not changing in a timely manner. This will likely not be fixed. Those that already have 1.7 still have this issue. Also I've noticed lately that both my DTV DVR and my TIVO are both starting to do the same thing as my 6416 Verizon. (I have DTV with Tivo at another location). All three DVR's on two different companies are doing the same delay of 3-5 seconds when changing channels before the info bar changes. I watch the boards here and dont see any solutions and both DTV and TIVO said it is just a delay in the software on the DVR and that there is nothing they can do about it. It sounded like a cop out but since it is happening with 3 differnt manufactures and on two different companies, I'm not sure where to put the blame on this one.
the short skip that you see when changing channels is normal. usually this is when the resolution of the program changes especially when going from SD to HD. I've seen this on every digital system I've ever used. Dont think this is anything to be conserned about.
The problem with the box not changing channels. This is another story all together. This is one to be worried about and work on correcting. Does it only happen when using the remote? what if you use the channel up and down on the box itself? will it do the same with the other remote from the other box? Have you tried calling TS and had them reset the box yet?

  • New to Fios: Schedules Recordings and DVR Capacity

I just gave up on RCN in lieu or Verizon Fios and thus far - can't stand the dvr.
    1) The capacity is no where near what RCN's was. I had days worth of TV, movies, etc saved and never ran out of space. With Verizon, it's been less than a week and I`m already half full. I don't have a HD TV, but I`m wondering if my lack of space is caused by the recorder taping in HD. How do I check this setting to ensure that everything being recorded is standard definition?
    2) The Verizon DVR is really bad at only keeping two episodes of a show, and only recording new/first run shows. Is there any setting to make this work better? I tried to set it to record first runs only of the show scrubs, on any channel (i wasnt sure what channel the new ones are run on) and in two days it taped 10 episodes...

The FiOS DVR has the same 160GB capacity as the RCN DVR.
SD channels are 0-499 and HD channels are 500+.  All the SD local channels can be found under 50.
Recordings from HD channels consume 3-6x the capacity of SD channels.

  • New to FIOS, several concerns

After 15+ years with DirecTV I switched to FIOS.  I'm three months into a two year contract and I have been experiencing several issues that I did not report until now, hoping they would be resolved.  I'm not feeling very confident that FIOS is a good move from DTV.
    1)     Caller ID does not display on TV.  This is a small but annoying issue that hasn't been resolved.  Reading DSL Reports I see this is a nationwide issue.  Should Verizon have communicated the problem to the customers? Yes
    2)     Loss of picture and sound on various channels.  I have read that this is a broadcast, not Verizon issue, but I find that hard to believe.  In all my time with DTV there were very few times I lost the sound, the picture, or both.  This is now a weekly occurrence.  I just returned home from vacation to find several TV show premiers either had sound or picture loss for all or some of the show. Frustrating!
    3)     Slooooooooooooooooooooooooow or no response from STB when using remote.  Fresh batteries in the remote, clear view from remote to STB (less than 10 feet), and relocating the set top box have not helped.  A slow and deliberate button press on the remote confirmed by the LED lighting up frequently does NOT elicit a response from the STB.  I have to watch the STB display  and LED on the remote to ensure the signal is sent and received.
    4)     Clunky DVR menu interface and recording algorithms.  I don't expect Verizon to fix this anytime soon and I realize I still need to adjust to FIOS, but the loss of functionality compared to DTV is rather exceptional.

Thank you both for the suggestions.
I have tried several methods outlined on the forums to get the caller ID working without success.  I can see the test message, but never receive a real notification.
All my connections are tight and the cable is new.  I checked for extra splitters or lines and did not see any.  The picture/sound loss has greatly improved over the last week but I'm still experiencing terrible lag when using the remote.
Of you are getting the test message than something is wrong between the Verizon caller ID server that forwards the message to your STB and the switch where you phone number resides.  I would suggest you contact Verizon or go to the Verizon Direct forum on DSL Reports and report it.  I've read about other problems like this and it takes some on the backend to get this sorted out.
The lag problem is reported by many people -- it's not something that's specific to you that you can troubleshoot.  See the other posts.

  • New to FIOS & want Direct TV back

What's the deal with the closed captions which appear for less than a second on programs that have been recorded?  Direct TV was never a problem and for those of us that are hearing impaired this is a tremendous loss of function with FIOS.
Is there any way to delete a program while watching it?  Again, Direct TV was so easy to use.  With FIOS, it seems I have to go back to the DVR menu and then relocate the program I was watching which means opening up every recording to see which one is marked "resume" so I know which one to delete.  What a hassle.
Why can't there be a "first aired" date as Direct TV has?  The only choices seem to be record all shows and then guess which one is new to me or record only first run shows.  I want to be able to see some reruns, but not have to open every one to see if I recognize it.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    1) Closed Captions: I don't understand what you are saying. If I record a program that does have closed captions, I can view them just fine when I play that program. I am not hearing impaired (yet) so I normally have closed captions turned off, but when I hit the CC button (the * on the remote) to cycle through the various options, the captions do appear and remain on the screen and seem to match the dialog. Of course not every program has closed captions, but those that do seem to display just fine for me on my DVR. Which Verizon DVR do you have?
    2) Delete a program while watching it: I don't understand your issue here either. While I am watching a recorded program I just hit the Stop button on the remote and I am always given several choices, one of which is Delete. You don't get that?
    3) first aired date: you are right, it would be nice. This is just part of the terrible Guide data that Verizon gets, or doesn't get, from their data provider, FYI Television, Inc. Lots of people have been complaining about the inaccurate and incomplete Guide data for a long time, so far no visible progress, but Eric Rabe in his blog here has said that they are looking into the issue.

  • New to Fios - guide information making me crazy!

So, I left cable and came to Fios.  So far, I'm happy with mostly everything, but the guide information on my DVR is so terrible that it is ruining the whole experience.  I'm setting up to record only new episodes of The Simpsons, and the guide thinks that every syndicated episode (2 reruns a day) is new.  So now I have 10 episodes scheduled to record this week.  When a new episode eventually comes on, it'll probably be deleted as the DVR continues to fill up with old episodes.
The non-syndicated repeat of The Simpsons on Sunday shows up as a repeat, so why can't the syndicated versions do the same?
Same goes with Lost on ABC.  2 reruns this weekend show up as new episodes.  If cable can get this straight, why can't Fios?

Yeah, this issue has been discussed a number of times here.  To put it bluntly, the guide sucks.  For instance, the program description for Saturday's baseball game on Fox was "Original air date 4/11/09."  Gee, that told me a lot about who was playing - it also made me do a double take of the calendar to make sure that it was indeed 4/11/09 and not some day in the future.
For whatever reason Verizon simply seems to be ignoring the horribly poor quality of the guide which we all pay for as part of our service.
FWIW, I've stopped automatic recording of some series for the very reason you mention.  I was recording only "new" episodes of Big Love (on HBO) but the DVR recorded the same episode about 5 times per week so I gave up on it.  Now I just have to remember to set up recording within a day or so of new episode broadcasts.

As it happens, I switched to Verizon's bundle from Time Warner a few days ago.  I opted to transfer my phone number so I could keep the old one. According to the Verizon order entry process, that number was transferable.
After a somewhat rocky switch over (that's another story), I found I have the same problem. Incoming calls within the Verizon
network work fine, but callers from outside the Verizon network are told by a recorded message that they've reached a
    non working number.
I got a trouble report in via the web, as a human operator was impossible to reach. .... Still waiting for a resolution.

  • New to fios - HD soft looking and remote question

Just got FIOS installed yesterday. I'm an IT Tech for a living so I've gone through a bunch of settings and options and not matter what the HD picture looks about 10% or more softer than the picture I had with Optimum. I have a 52" 1080 lcd. I've tried hdmi and composite, I've made sure the box is set to 1080i, I've raised the boxes sharpness setting to max, etc. Where should I go from here?
Also, the remote... With both the FIOS one and my logitech harmony if I'm watching a channel and hit the UP arrow to see what's on the next channel it goes down and vice versa. Why do the arrow keys work opposite?? Never did this on optimum. In case I'm not clear enough... If I scroll down with the arrow keys it scrolls up in the channel list - 800, 801, 802, etc. If I scroll up with the up arrow it goes 800, 799, 798, etc.

If you think you're viewing HD channels using a composite connection then you're seeing an SD version of that channel.  Composite is only SD.  The sharpness setting only applies to SD signals. Have you reset the settings on the TV itself?  They probably will need to be different from your old provider since the signals are not precisely the same.  Also, make sure your SD override is set to off.
The guide scrolls as it is shown on the screen, which is a lower channel number above a higher channel number.  The "next" channel you expect to see may be higher in number but below the current item on the guide, and that's the way it scrolls -- down the guide, not up it.  Up shows a lower channel in the guide.

  • New to Fios - So confused how to find anything on!!! - Need help with search

Been with Comcast for years and years and just switched to Fios.  With all the channels and various buttons on the remote I'm overwhelmed with trying to figure out what's actually on.
I understand how to use the search feature to find a show or theme, but what I can't figure out is how do you see a list of results for just programs that are currently on??
It seems the search results are listed in order of channel name and there is nothing on the list that I see that shows which ones are currently on.  I find myself going thru the list, constantly pushing the right arrow key on the remote just to then find out the show is on later in the day or another day.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Vince

The best way to see what's on now is simply to press Up on the remote to bring up the half-screen guide, then use the Ch + and - buttons to quickly scan through it.
Not the solution you wanted. Perhaps you should suggest it in the Ideas forum.

Check and see if your PDA will alow you to create a connection where you can enter the SSID and WEP encryption key. Both can be found on the back of your Actiontec router. Your PDA can probably see the SSID from the router, but it needs the key.
