New to Garage Band..Need advice please...

Hello everyone,
I would like to get back to playing the piano and am extremely confused about MIDI controllers and digital keyboards or pianos. I just want to be able to play the piano when I feel like it and then if I want to record some stuff, I can just plug it in and record some of my stuff. I am looking at keyboards/controllers and just can't figure out the difference. I was thinking about M-Audio 61 but have no idea if this will work as a piano and as something I can record onto the computer. Thanks a lot in advance.

A controller is just an input device, it doesn't create its own sounds. So if you want to make music with it, you always need a program that creates the sounds, like GarageBand. You'll have to fire up your computer each time you want to play. If that's okay with, you, it will work perfectly together.
If you are looking for a standalone device, you should look into a digital keyboard (lots of fancy sounds) or a digital piano (better piano sound) and make sure it has a Mac compatible USB connection (otherwise you'll have to buy a midi interface to connect it). That way you can use it both ways - play it just by itself or connect it to the computer to use GB or other programs.

  • Thinking about getting garage band - need advice badly!!!!

whatsup, i've been playing guitar for about 2 years now. and i've moved in with a buddy of mine who's got all kinds of equipment. soundboard, snyth, i mean everything you need. i want to know if garage band would be a good investment if i don't really want to use the loops they have because we can create everything we want from his soundboard and snyth. i just want to be able to lay down my own loops, with my bass and synths. also most importantly, what would i need to actually record everything onto my mac. i already have mics, and all that good stuff - but what will i need to connect either to mics or the soundboard to my mac for recording.. all help would be super!!! thanks guys

    Geoff,
As a professional musician/composer I can say the following with confidence. Garageband will get you up and running if you're looking to record some good demos and don't need a lot of bells and whistles. You're definitely paying some money for the loops that you get with the program, but there's not much to be done about that.
I've used everything; LOTS of different types of recording software/devices (from 4-Track Analog to Pro-tools rigs that take up a room) and as a basic recording interface Garageband delivers. The software instruments have impressed me in particular. Essentially midi samples, they deliver relatively high quality considering the price you pay for them. As a comparison, go drop a few thousand on Tascam's Gigastudio and see how much happier you are (if you can get the program to run for more than half an hour without crashing).
As far as an interface for mics, etc. is concerned you've got lots of options. The easy fix is the mic input on your Mac. Get yourself a 1/4" to 1/8" converter and plug that bass in. Alternately, does your roommate have anything that you can use? If so, bogart that sucker till you can afford your own. I have a MOTU, but haven't hooked it up to my machine yet. Just used the above solution to hook my guitar up a few times.
Anywho, to sum up, I wouldn't buy Garageband for it's recording capabilities alone, but if you plan on using everything it offers (software synths, recording, maybe the occasional loop) go buy it.
    Truly,
    if
p.s. Just to further qualify the above statements, I'm not a lifelong mac owner. I just got my first one this month and after day 3 it was safe to saw that I'll have a hard time going back to Windows and building my own machines again. My own music can be heard at www.ChadTaylor.us . Cheers.

  • New user of G4 - need advice on selection of printer, DV and digital camera

I am a recent convert to mac and need advice from experts on the following:
I plan to use my G4 MDD primarily for home computing, experimenting with digital photography, create DVDs and explore multimedia primarily as a hobby. Please advice me on selection of a decent digital camera and or a DV camera. I am not sure if I have a decent DV camera - whether this will be good enough for still photos as well. My G4 has firewire ports.
Also I am interested in buying a printer that I can use with my mac as well as connect to a two other windows systems. My printing needs are primarily documents and maybe photos.. I think that going in for a laser printer makes sense in terms of reliability .
I am not looking for the highend equipment - willing to spend upto 750 $ on all items. Thanks in advance.

    raja,
    welcome to discussions.
Digital Camera, DV camera and colour Laser Printer all for $750 ??
I'm afraid you'll have to go for an inkjet printer if you want colour photos. Expensive doesn't even begin to describe Colour Laser Printers. HP make good printers, but tend to be a bit more expensive to run, Epson make excellent photo printers, are are a bit more economical to run, take a look at the iP4000 and iP5000. I still use my old HP DeskJet 1200 (does A3), and a DeskJet 970Cxi (everyday), both use the same cartidges. These are about 7 years old, there are modern versions retailing now at about half of what I paid for these then(always the case).
Digital cameras can be decided by what purpose you intend to use them for. I have an 18 month old Nikon D100 digital SLR. 6M pixel (which was a lot then) but that might not matter, it takes Nikon lenses (and other manufacturer lenses to the same spec), so I can shoot with a 300mm, 400mm, 600mm lens. Nikon has a D50 out now, a cheaper, newer version of my camera. I can print A3 photo real from 6M pixels and with the right lens I don't need to crop my pictures too much. If you want to print photo real A4 (and that's a LOT of ink) a 3-4M pixel camera would be fine. Most cameras now are 5-8 M pixel, this is because the pictures they take have to be cropped drastically because they have an inadequate lens. On top of that my Nikon takes really great pictures, better than any of my other digi cameras (but not as good as my ancient Olympus 35mm muji-zoom compact with 200 film).
So if you're going to take a lot of close ups in well lit areas, product shots, interior shots with flash, ie. "snaps" rather than photography, any cheap digi camera will do. Good points are
    - USB / Firewire connectivity,
    - non-proprietry battery technology, ie. it uses 4 x recharable AAs instead of a battery that only fits that camera, and it comes with a AA recharger.
    - non-proprietry storage technology, ie. it uses Compact Flash or some other that is used by a large portion of cameras, rather than just be that manufacturer.
    - digital zoom is worthless.
If you're doing outdoor photography, wildlife, landscapes, etc, you may want something with a changeable lens and SLR technology, a digital SLR. Not all digital SLR cameras have changeable lenses. Same good points as above, but be prepared to sacrifice one of the points for a good camera. Heavy cameras are easier to hold steady with a big lens, so try for a metal case (it'll be coated in plastic anyway).
For outdoors the most important thing is the amount of light entering the camera (indoors you can control the lighting with flash / fitted lighting), digital SLRs can have enormous lenses (my 28mm hyperzoom lens has a 72mm diameter), compare this to a compact digital camera with a 12mm diameter lens, I take 36x the light of a compact. And it shows in the picture quality.
I'm a complete duffer with DV cameras so I won't lead you astray with this, but be aware some do offer the option to take digital pictures. Indeed some digital cameras can take low quality short movies.
Let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Major Issues with installing 4tb internal. Really need advice please

In the process of a long needed upgrade to my 2010 Mac Pro Quad core 2.8 and have run into a serious headache that I really need advice on so I can get back to work. I've already spent 2 days dealing with all of this...
Just did a new SSD install and Migration which went fine but I'm also updating the rest of the internal drives. My main (non boot) drive was being upgraded from a Seagate Barracuda 3tb to a 4th Deskstar NAS (it was showing as compatible with my desktop, see links below). My 3tb ran fine for years but now due to it being heavily used I want to switch to a new drive and I can also use a bit more space.
The issue I'm running into is that initially on boot, my system was telling me it couldn't recognize the disk and it wasn't even showing up in Disk Utility. I had to purchase a SATA USB 3 kit to attach it as an external to get it to show which worked without problem. With the USB kit I was then able to partition it (GUID, Mac OS extended journaled) and format it properly. After reinserting the drive into my tower as an internal it failed to show again. After a few attempts of restarts and trying various bays it popped up but showed as a non formatted drive and I was told again that the system didn't recognise it. I was then given the option to initialise and was then actually able to then format and partition it though Disk Utility while it was installed as an internal.
Figured that was problem solved but when I went to check the drive and getting ready to transfer files over I noticed that Disk Utility was only allowing the First Aid and Partition options but not Erase, RAID, Restore which I'd never seen before. I then also noticed that none of the drive connection info was in the same format nor will it even provide drive bay info, connection info or read/write status (See screen shots). This is what I can't figure out and really need to clarify before I put full trust into using this drive.
Any info would be greatly appreciated...
Deskstar 4tb internal info which is installed in Bay 2
3tb Seagate which I trying to retire and transfer from.
Here are the weblinks to the Deskstar 4tb drive and the compatibility list but I support isn't allowing me to add direct links so add the www. before hand.
    (Drive - eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0S03664/) (compatibility list - eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/Framework.cfm?page=macpromid2010.html).

    What OSX version?
Disk Utility in later versions of ML and I think Mavericks have problems formatting with 4 TB internal drives.

  • Media browser in garage band went black please help me

Hi after doing an update my garage band media browser is black, can you help me....

Hi, no need to do a second post (it can actually make things confusing).
If you want you can reply to yourself and just write "bump" or something to move the question back up to the top.
Sometimes it takes a while for someone who might have an answer to come by.
So, after all that, I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer for you.
Maybe if you provided more details someone may have a clue. Like what did you update from and to? A system update, a GarageBand update, both?

  • Garage band video help please

I'm using Garage Band '11 to download youtube videos and then remove the movie track, keep the sound track, and export to itunes as a music only file. How do I delete the original movie from the Mac Video Library? There is no option to do this when I right click and if i highlight the movie track, Track, the delete option is unavailable. After I have deleted the movie portion of the imported file and exported the sound portion am I correct in thinking I have no use for the original imported youtube file? I have 300+ files sitting there which I would like to remove. Thanks.
    OS is 10.9.5
    12.1.0.50 itunes  version

What's your problem? After you learned how to split regions, everything else is just basic Mac technique:
Duplicate a track: Select it, Apple-D.
Copy and paste a region over into another track: Apple-C, select other track, Apple-V (pastes at the position of the playhead). Or: alt-drag the region to create a copy.
Move regions by dragging them with the mouse. Loop by dragging them at the upper right corner (cursor changes).
I can't see anything else that you might need!!

  • ITunes. Entire music list has the exclamation marks and I can't open music because it cannot be located. I'm 67yr old and need advice please.

I'm 67 yrs old and asking for advice please.
I'm unable now to play the music in my iTunes playlists. 90% of the tunes have exclamation marks now and I can't 'locate' the music. How can I locate the music or remove the exclamation marks on my iTunes music list?

Typical reasons for missing files are, you've deleted the files, they are on a disconnected external drive, or the drive has a changed drive letter, you've moved the folder where the files live in some other fashion, a third party app has rearranged the files, or iTunes has got confused about the layout they are supposed to be in.
Generally you need to work out what has happened, reverse the action and everything will be alright again. If it is something you can't/don't want to undo, e.g. a drive letter change, then as long as you can track down the current location of the folder containing the media then my script FindTracks should be able to reconnect it to iTunes.

  • Help for a new mac-garage band user-m audio pro setting imput

garage band help says click on preferences, but the preferences menu only will come up at start of project--then can only set audio output to m audio pro-audio imput is blank--so internal mike is usued not imput from m audio.
Somehow I managed to get it to work for one song--headphones from m audio montored tracks-guitar recorded using amp sims--been trying for hours to repeat that but only internal mike now will work.

You should be able to open garageband preferences
anytime. Are you sure your looking under Garageband >
    Preferences.
And what interface are you using, is it the Fast
    Tracks Pro?
Yes fast tracks pro--I finnaly was able to go to preferences when I exited garage band and openend it up again, but when I was working on the song and clicked on preferences it would not come up

  • New to Garage Band and my MacBook Pro

I was wondering if I can use Garage Band to edit preexisting tracks. I am a choreographer and I would like to edit the songs I use for my dances. Can I do that with Garage Band? Can I drop a sound track into Garage Band and edit it to my liking? How would I do that?

Of course garageband can do this but it is really meant more for music creation. But you can just drop the 45 minute track into garageband and use the cycle region function to mark a track and export to itunes. If you plan on doing this often check out http://rogueamoeba.com/fission/. If you have Toast from roxio it also comes with software just for this.

  • Using Built-in Audio/Mbox for recording on Garage Band - Need Help!

So I just found out that Pro Tools is not yet compatible with Leopard, so I'm working in Garage Band. I want to use live guitars and mics, and I'm curious about the inputs.
Obviously for guitars all I have is 1/4" cables. If I get an 1/8" converter for it, and put it into the headphone jack on my computer, will Garage Band recognize it?
What other interfaces for 1/4" does anyone suggest? I CANNOT get Mbox to work at all. All I get is 'Error code 28773.' Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks everyone -

  • HELP: New to Mavericks. Need advice on setting up secure user accounts

    Hi,
I need advice on how to best set up user accounts on Mavericks.
I must set up an Administrative account...Any suggestion for best settings here to protect against targeted malicious exploits?
I would also like to set up two user accounts for everyday work with applications and Internet browsing done in such a way that the machine would be protected from malicious attacks but with a minimum of inconvience for the users ( myself and my wife ).
    Thanks

Hi hassiman, any exploits will come in the form of users downloading suspect pieces of software like browser add-ons and extensions, device drivers and non-trusted apps.
Make sure that you do not use the admin account for any day to day use
Create two normal user accounts, one for each of you and use them day to day
When using the admin account to set up your system, pay very careful attention to the System Preferences > Privacy & Security area. There are various things to set up properly here:
There are three settings for how people can download software, 1) From Mac App Store only, 2) From App Store and registered developers and 3) from anyone. It defaults to 2) but check it and if you feel uncomfortable with that, set it to 1). This might prevent you from downloading and installing software you think you might need; but think carefully about wether you really need it and therefore wether you should temporarily allow it via a lower setting.
For the firewall, if you dont have a firewalled internet gateway device (a wireless router or similar), make sure the firewall is turned on. Most internet connection equipment does have such a firewall; make sure it is blocking any incoming connections by using its admin tool (usually a web browser interface). Consult its documentation for details.
Whenever OS X asks for a password to complete a task of any kind, look carefully at what is making it ask and if you aren't sure, don't go through with it; it is usually wanting the admin account name and ppassword to complete some kind of system modification (install, config etc.).
Make sure that you are both aware of the danger of installing any software that wants to add itself to your system or web browser. Things like custom search bars, extensions etc. If you are viewing a web page and it says you need "x" to see it or use it properly, make sure you really need to use that web site; otherwise don't do it.
It really all comes down to common sense; the worst security breaches and damage come from users who don't know what to do, but they still click "OK" when they should be clicking "cancel" or "close". Make sure you and your wife are fully aware that responsibility lies with yourselves. It is better to take a minute to decide wether to install something (even if it's 20 times a week) than spend days fixing a compromised system.

  • Does anyone know how to separate a movie track from an audio track on the new Mavericks Garage band. It used to be very easy on the iLife 11 version. If anyone could respond ASAP I'd be grateful. I need to make an audio file from a video.

I urgently need to make some audio tracks from videos using the new 2013 GarageBand. In iLife11 Garageband, this was very easy. However, I cannot see how to do it in the new one. The alternative might be to revert to the iLife11 version, so does anyone know how to do this. It's extremely urgent since I need to produce these for a court custody hearing which will take place at 0800 GMT UK time on 31st October 2013. Please help.
    Thank you.

When you drag a movie from the Media Browser to the Time lIne in GarageBand, you will see a pop-up "Extracting Audio".
The Movie and the audio file will appear in separate tracks. You can copy the audio region from the sound track to a different track to keep it safe and then hide the Movie track.

  • Add RAM or buy a new machine? Need advice please.

    Hello,
I am asking this question for a friend who owns a 5 year old iMac. It only has a 500GB hard drive, and it is almost full (475 GB are in use, and we recently had to dump some items because it had reached it's limit). It has the factory-installed 8GB of RAM, but there are two empty slots which can hold 4GB each (or a grand total of 8GB of additional RAM, for a total of 16GB of RAM).
He also is a HUGE user of iTunes, and he has a 1.5 TB external drive that contains all of his iTunes files (we have iTunes set to automatically place all iTunes files onto the external hard drive so that it does not take up hard drive space on the iMac).
He is running OS 10.8, Lion (and wants to upgrade to Mountain Lion).
So, here is my question.....Will adding 8 GB of RAM make this machine "faster"? This machine has gotten very, very slow over the last year. When you launch any application, you get the spinning beach ball for a few minutes and then eventually, sooner or later, the app will come up. But everything moves very slowly----everything.
I was thinking that if we added the 8GB of RAM, that would fix a lot of our slow problems. Am I correct here, or would this not do anything? I was wondering if a 5 year old iMac with 8GB of RAM even has sufficient power to be running Lion in the first place.
Any thoughts on this? Thanks much!

Will a full hard drive slow down a computer? I was under the impression that it was RAM. This might be very important, because his hard drive is extremely full. Last week, he was getting messages that his hard drive was full, so we took lots of "stuff" out and put it into the trash can and deleted it.
Yes for a couple of reasons. OS X needs plenty of room to move around and work in, plus read and write becomes slower on that part of the hard drives platter.
At this point your friend really needs to backup if he is not already doing so and
    1. Farm out his photo's, movies and/or music to an External HD, as per the following article's:
iPhoto '11: Move your iPhoto library to a new location
iMovie '11: Copy or move a project to an external hard disk
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
    or
    2. Have an Apple Authorized Service Provider replace the 500GB Hard Drive with a 1T or larger Hard Drive.
