New to itunes & have questions...

Just bought an ipod 30g video. LOVE IT! and itunes is good software once i figure out the little things.
I've been using Musicmatch Jukebox, and Winamp pro for several years, neither are equiped to deal with the ipod.
Is there a way to "refresh" or "rescan" and update the itunes library? In the above mentioned software they have a feature where you can rescan the folders and it will remove or update files that have changed or been moved, and add new ones automaticly. If you rename a file or change a tag. they update the library.... am I making sense?
The second question is mounting and unmounting the ipod. When you connect the ipod you get the "do not disconnect icon", you then have to eject the ipod to use it. Is there a way to reconnect the ipod to itunes without unplugging the usb cable and re-plugging it in (or restarting itunes)?

as far as i know itunes automatically renames and mods files in the source library when you change them in itunes.
actually in itunes go to edit-preferences go to the advanced section then make sure it's in general tab and there are two ticky boxes one says keep itunes folder organized and the other says copy folders to itunes music folder when adding to library. if you tick both of these i think they'll help you out with this.
your itunes might be set up differently as I work with a mac. should have all the same options.
Second question. you probably have some program that will allow you to unmount the disk. I just don't know what it would be called.

You do not. Content is permanently tied to the Apple ID that it was acquired with.
Sign out of the computer with the new Apple ID. STOP using the new Apple ID.
Sign in with the original Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

How to reset your Apple ID password.
Go to iforgot.apple.com and type in your Apple ID, then click 'Next'.
Verify your date of birth, then click 'Next'.

Trawled through lots of misleading help files, mailed friends, tried many back routes into Apple web sites and they all wasted my time. Can anyone help?
I have discovered since then, that this resorce has been down over the weekend, which probably explains why I have had so many contradictory responses, so apologies if you all know what the prolem is.
My question is, my TIME MACHINE (which has not been used yet) was tried but looked nothing like that of the U Tube demo, so I am assuming that it needs setting up, however, it has been saving, I just do not know how to recover the data. Can anyone help?

(If you have a Time Machine backup, go to your User folder/Music/iTunes and select iTunes. Enter Time Machine and go to a backup of iTunes before the above happened. Then select 'Restore' on the bottom right.)

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.

You created a new AppleID?
Why not simply update your old AppleID so you have only one iTunes account?

I have always synced my Iphone 4 to a previous laptop but now want to use a new (already iTunes authorised) computer. I don't mind losing music but want to know if I will lose data such as photos or texts? Thanks,

I have an iphone 4, using IOS 5.0.1 and have always synced it to my laptop (windows vista, 32 bit). I have recently bought a new desktop computer (Windows 7, 64 bit) and after putting it off for a while, i've decided to bite the bullet and sync my iphone with my new computer. I have already authorised my itunes account on my new computer, and i don't mind loosing music. I am more concered though about the risk of loosing my text messages and photos on my phone.
Could anyone please tell me if i will loose the messages and photos from my phone when syncing to a new computer.

When you connect the iPhone to sync with the new computer, a number of things will happen. If the new computer/iTunes does not contain any music, then yes, you will receive a prompt saying this iPhone is synced to another library, and if you continue, you will lose your music. However, you risk losing a number of other things, such as apps, contacts and calendar data. When you ask about photos, any photos that you have on the iPhone that were synced from the previous computer would also be lost. You need to save the photo folder from the old laptop and transfer that to the new desktop. You also need to sync the contacts and calendar to the same supported application that you were using in the past, such as Outlook, unless you are using an outside web-based sync, such as Google. Also, when you first connect the iPhone, it will make a backup, or at least make sure that it does before you attempt to sync, or you will not have a backup of some of the other things, such as mail settings, SMS, and the contents of the Camera Roll. I would import the photos from the camera roll to the new computer before trying to do anything else in iTunes.

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer. This restores the library and device association files. If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.
