New to iWeb - publishing to nonMac domain

Hello! I am fairly new to the iWeb page builder and am endeavoring to make a website for my own domain. I am using Verve Hosting as my server, who also have set up my domain as well, so I have an FTP program through them. However, I am encountering some problems when I publish to a folder and then try to upload that folder into my server acct. so I am not sure which end is having the trouble. When I pull up my web address, www.gaslighthotel.net, I get a partial of what I have designed in iWeb, but I dont get the fonts I have used, and each link/text that I have is "underlined" by a filename 'shapeimage10' or some such filename. Is this a problem that needs correctng through my webpage building or is it something I have to do in my files through the server?
Also, the markers for the images I have inserted pop up as outlines and then disappear into the background. I tried saving the file where everything on the page was 'brought forward' but that doesnt seem to have solved the problem.
Any help that someone would be willing to help walk a newbie to this through would be greatly appreciated!

You may want to consider getting an FTP application that is designed to run on your Mac. The ones that are used by hosting services are usually problematic.

  • Iweb not publishing to correct domain

I am totally new to iweb and have just finished designing my website. I own both web hosting and a domain name with justhost.com
I have set up ftp and when i try to publish my site, it does it to the wrong domain name.
    e.g. my domain is myweb.com
the website name in iweb is myweb
when the site is published it is published to myweb.com/myweb
therefore it doesnt work properly and I have spent hours trying to figure it out, but no luck!
    Hope someone can help

This is absolutely normal for iWeb and it is iWeb site structure - every iWeb site has to be given a name in iWeb itself, so when you publish your site, it will be published in a folder with your site name and then a separate index file - totally normal.
Your url will then be http://www.domain.com/sitename/pagename.
You named your site in iWeb and you can alter this to something short like Site etc.
Alternatively, do what Roddy has suggested and publish your site to a local folder from iWeb and then use Cyberduck to upload directly to your server. However, just upload the contents of your site folder only and then your url will be http://www.domain.com/pagename.

  • How do I publish from iWeb to my personal domain

Can someone tell me the exact steps I have to take to modify iWeb to publish my albums to my Personl domain. I found some instaruction about going to my domain cPanel and adding a new CNAME. The problem is that it asks for a NAME and a CNAME and I don't know what to put there. Now do I know to modify iWeb to replce the std "gallery.me.com"   I don't know what to change that too.
    My cPanel  asks for...
    Add a CNAME Record
    Name:
    CNAME:
If my domanname is www.peter.com, what do I use in the name field ?  What should the CNAME be also ?
This is supposed to, after correcting iWeb, allow and iWeb publish to my personal domain.
    Can anyone help me withthis?
    TIA,
    Peter

Your original post did not in fact state anywhere that you had a MobileMe account.
Also, you seem to be getting a little confused here with terminology which does make a difference.
Rather than a domain, what you in fact have is a domain name that is registered through hostpapa.com - it is not hosted as you say, but registered with them.
Also, iWeb will not and does not 'publish directly to your own domain'.  iWeb cannot publish to a domain name or anything - you need a hosting account to be able to publish a website - do you have this?  If not, then you will need to purcahse hosting too.
So, if you want to publish your site directly to hostpapa instead of MobileMe, then CNAME is NOT involved in this at all - you DON'T need it.  CNAME is only a method of forwarding that you would use to forward your domain name to web.me.com when published on MobileMe.  If you do not want to use MobileMe any longer, then you don't need this.
So you say that you have registered a domain name with hostpapa?  Do you also have a hosting account with them too if they provide hosting?  If not, then you need to purcahse a hosting account from either them or some other company that provides hosting.
When you have your hosting account and assuming that you are using iWeb 09, open iWeb and then click on your site name and your publishing options with become available in the drop down menu - rather than picking publish to MobileMe, select the publish to ftp option instead and fill in your details such as ftp name, username and password and then upload your site after testing your connection.
If you are using iWeb 08, then you'll need to publish to a local folder and use Cyberduck or Yummy ftp etc to upload your site to your server instead.
CNAME is not involved and if you purcahse hosting from another company other than hostpapa, then you will probably have to alter your nameservers so that they point to where your site is now hosted.
If you want to ditch MobileMe, then you don't need to use CNAME at all - it just isn't involved here.

  • New site not publishing. 2 separate MobileMe accounts, iweb sites involved

*April '09 I purchase Mobile Me for use to develop a website for a friend.* I use his email, but my credit card to make the purchase, and set up the website from iweb on my macbook.
    http://web.me.com/samaniegosinclair/hector/AbouttheArtist
*A month ago I purchase an iphone and buy mobileme for my own personal use (with same credit card from first mobileme).* I set it up on my macbook and sign into mobileme from system prefs with my new username and password. Then I open iweb because I want to create a website for my own use.
*The friends website draft loads in iweb. How is this possible if I am opening iweb with a totally different account?*
*I try to create a new site, my own site (so it shows up second in the index to the left), and then publish.* It's been over 30 minutes, but all text on left side index is still red (not blue which indicates published status, right?), but there's a filled-in white circle next to the title of my site (doesn't that mean it's finished uploading?)
*Then I decide to search for my site.* According to the help file it should be http://web.me.com/[YourMemberName] for the first site. Well this is my first site on this account, but not the first site I've created using iweb (hence why the friend's site shows up first?).
*So I type in http://web.me.com/margie.hatch (margie.hatch being my username) hit the return key and this shows up: http://web.me.com/margie.hatch/hector/AbouttheArtist.html. WHAT? How'd that happen?*
Where do I even start to sort this out and get my new site published? Must I terminate the first mobile me account?

The friends website draft loads in iweb. How is this possible if I am opening iWeb with a totally different account?
You're not opening iWeb with a toally different account. iWeb opens a file on your computer :
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites2
iWeb publishes to the MobileMe account you entered in the System Prefs.
The purchase of an iPhone has nothing to do with it.

  • I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Help please

I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Does anyone have the same problem or know how to fix it?

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate

How can I edit my iweb site when the domain file opens up empty? I have the site backed up in mobile me, on my computer, and on an external hard drive.
How can I transfer these files into iweb?

    Hi there,
To edit your site from one of your backed up versions, place the Domain file in User>Library>Application Support>iWeb & then launch iWeb. Update & publish.

  • IWeb Publishing New Version But Only Allows Me to Edit Old Version

In OSX 10.7.5 and iWeb 3.0.4, the iWeb app opens to show my website as it was 1 year ago. When I visit the site published on the web, it shows my most current version of the site as it's posted through a local folder and online Dropbox. How do I get my most current version to show through iWeb so I can make further edits?

You need to download iWeb user sites or domain cracker to be able to open individual domain files.  In OS 10.7 and above, you can only open single domain.sites files.
Download it and you should be able to open your current domain file.

Bitte um specifischen Pfad um eine bereits bei 1und1 domain server bei google zu verifizieren. Vielen Dank

Download the html file google provides and put it in the root of your webserver.
Root is where you publish your webpages.
It's the file at the right of your your domainname.
    Example:
    http://www.yourdomainname.com/index.html
    index.html is in the root.
To verify your site and if the google file has a name like dfrrndfbfgn.html, you provide this url to google :
    http://www.yourdomainname.com/dfrrndfbfgn.html
Practice. And note that iWeb is not part of it.

  • Make iWeb Publish feature Subversion friendly for Domain.sites2 package

If one tries to store Domain.sites2 via Subversion, it will last only briefly before the next Publish event wipes away the .svn directories used by Subversion that will live within the Domain.sites2 folder structure (you can view this via Finder right click Domain.sites2 -> Show Package contents).
The Publishing mechanism of iWeb seems to blow away anything it doesn't know about - but it would be nice if there were a configurable option within iWeb.plist file to have the Publish mechanism to ignore certain files/folders - in particular, .svn folders is what I want it to ignore so I can store Domain.sites2 within Subversion and thus easily share/collaborate on an iWeb site with other Mac users who have iWeb and Subversion.
    JD
ps: Storing the resulting html output via Subversion works great and is what I use to easily sync up my Apache server to the output of iWeb. I just want to also make it easy to share/collaborate on the actual iWeb source files with other iWeb users (i.e., Domain.sites2).

  • IWeb published old photo names... will not update

I am having a problem with the photo pages. When I first built a photo page I used images whose file names were too long. When iWeb published the files the names became corrupted and would not display.
I can't get iWeb to forget the original file names...
I have re-named, deleted, re-imported, changes the file size, and made all the changes I can think of to get the photos to be seen as new images. No luck.
Every time iWeb publishes the site it uses the "historic" names for the files.
Any ideas? I'm about to delete the entire site and start over... but I would rather not do it that way. Who knows, that might not even work!
    Thanks!
    PPC Powerbook 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I've also had that problem - real headache
    Here's a fix (in princple) :
Within iWeb delete the photos you don't want from the page.
    Save "command-s"
    Quit iWeb
Before re-opening iWeb go and check the 'Domain' 'package' - this is where iWeb stocks the ressources and assets for you as 'user' :
    user/library/application support/iWeb/Domain
Click right to show hidden package contents (I use French Tiger so don't know if that's the right command name but you get what I mean).
Here you'll see all the files/images etc you have used in any of your sites/pages.
In principal when you save in iWeb the Domain gets updated and should throw out any images you deleted from your iWeb page - so those 'old' files should no longer exist.
I think what you may have been doing is deleting images from the page and NOT SAVING that change. In principal Publishing to a folder or .Mac constitues a 'save' but I'm not convinced that the two have the same effect on the Domain.
I actually binned directly from the Domain once but I've read elsewhere that tampering there might cause probs.
Hope that gives you some insight.

  • IWeb publishes updates but does not upload in the FTP

    HELP!
I have a 'tried-tested-true' website that's been on the internet for 10 years. It's been updated over the years but needed much more as of today.
The updates perfectly publish within iWeb [3.0.4]. The FTP uploads the site, but when I check it on the internet [Safari 6.2.3], the former version appears.
I proceeded to troubleshoot by renaming the website and re-mounting the pages. Also, renaming the pages, but after several attempts of uploading each newer version, all efforts were to no avail. It has taken me a full day without results. That is, the original website remains on the internet, which is very outdated.
I have run out of troubleshooting ideas. All of my other websites have not had this problem. There was an issue this week with the ISP Domain Host services not connecting my site. I contacted them, but have had no response. However, I thought I would try connecting again today in case they sorted out their connectivity issues. I am able to connect to their server. I have good reason to believe the FTP is uploading the updated directory files, but for some reason when it comes to viewing the site on the internet, au contraire.
Not sure if this is an iWeb problem or my ISP domain hosting services having issues with connectivity. Whatever, it is very perplexing to me as to what to do next after the extensive amount of time I have taken troubleshooting.
I repeat myself when I say, 'HELP!'

Okay, I understand what you are referencing. I am publishing my websites to the path of 'Users'-Documents-Website Documents.
Below is a screen shot of the folder my Websites are located. Is this what you are referencing? It is Site 2 that is having issues with uploading to the domain host server of my ISP. All the other sites have been uploaded successively.
I use FileZilla as my FTP server and it has been excellent. I have tried CyberDuck, et al. FZ works perfectly well indicating all that one needs to know while uploading. If my other websites were causing the same issues, then it would mean FTP issues.
However, I believe I am on the same track you are referencing with regards to my published website is in the appropriate location on my HD. I stand to be corrected.
I believe by my contacting the Forum and reading your information that I am following protocol as I have always done with my 4 websites that upload properly. As I continue the discussion, it is becoming evident the issue is with the Domain Host server, which is not a problem to post on this Forum.
However, I posted my issue just in case it was an iWeb issue or my not following protocol correctly to publish a website. From what I am gleaning with your information, I am following protocol. Repeating myself when I say it appears to be the aforementioned server. I have contacted them again about their Domain Host server but no response as yet.
If what I am presenting to you is the correct protocol I have in place at my end, I thank you for taking the time to assist me. By doing so, I believe I will be able to determine it is not an iWeb publishing issue [mostly because all my websites are not experiencing this problem], nor is it the FTP server,FileZilla, but the Domain Host Server.
As mentioned above, here is the folder where my websites are located.
    I so appreciate your assistance.

  • IWeb publishing errors

My computer crashed and I ended up installing everything again. However, when I try to update my site using iWeb, I get the following error:
An error occurred while publishing file “/private/var/folders/g3/g3WR5nm6GXmMVozexXw6oU+TI/TemporaryItems/com.apple.iWeb2243_TEMP_270725365_2/sites/Site/theology_spong_files/shapeimage7.png”. Try publishing again later.
I tried deleting iWeb and reinstalling. I also erased my idisk and even dumped my "domain" and wrote a completely new one page test site to no avail.

  • IWeb publishing error unknown version 1.01

Help. I thought iWeb was supposed to be fairly simple!
I have a reasonable amount of content, which I have recently gone to a lot of hard work to transpose from homepage to iweb. It now won't publish. I get the above error message. I have looked for something to aid me with this, but it tends to be regarding version 1.1 (I haven't upgraded). I want to cry. Any ideas anyone? Is it because I changed a couple of site names? Are five photo pages with approximately 80 photos on more than 1 GB? I have gone into Domain, this indicates 1.1GB but I don't think that can be right! Also, I tried to publish to a folder - no success there either - the above error message again!
Please help me, I'm so frustrated I could pop!
    Matt

    "homepage transposed to iWeb"?
does that mean you have a homepage version of the photos then an iWeb published one?
then yeah it is likely you've exceeded the 1Gb space allotment in a single user .mac account. (80 photos x 5 x 2(homepage+iWeb versions) .... its possible to reach 1 Gb depending on the size of the photos
Play around with publishing to a free version of .mac . Create a new user on your computer and use that to publish to the new .mac account. See if you encounter problems publishing there, this way you can rule out whether it was your paid .mac account that's faulty or your ISP/network.
Lookslike you have to make a choice between homepage and iWeb. Just arrange your photos on iPhoto as you see fit (the 5 albums you want) and play around in iWeb.
